“Art but make it fashion” While at Foundation Louis Vitton this summer I ran across the most massive piece of artwork by Gerhart Richter. This piece is simply a peinture made up of 25 colors scrambled by a computer program put together on 196 panels. At first I thought to myself I could make that 🙄 but then after sitting and looking at it for a while and it’s massive size I noticed that due to all of the colors and distractions it makes you forget about other things on your mind and simply see what’s in front of you. The color. #4900farben #gerhartrichter #foundationlv #louisvuittonfoundation #louisvuittonfoundationparis #paris #colorful #fashion #makeitfashion #bepresent (at Jardin d'Acclimatation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1tNxL6AP0g/?igshid=efbdy81qyflt

Gerhart Richter
I once again spend hours obsessing over my absolute favourite artists Gerhart Richter, I ran across a web article from the MET whilst exploring their online galleries thanks to corona. I was thinking of also placing this post within my previous post but I felt like Richter Deserves his own.
Richters work to me manages to capture a lot of truth in todays art world. He’s constantly talking about reproduction and reasons to create art. What I find so fascinating about his early work his is conflict with photography. I think he grew up in a post world war 2 society where painters and artists had to rediscover what a paintings purpose is. Photography had replaced a paintings century old goal of depicting reality. Richter however looked at it differently, he started to feel like photographs did not tell us about the world the photo lived in. Photos are snapshots of moments, distant memories. Richter started to paint reality from photos that he took out of newspaper and family photo books. Giving photographic snapshots a new chance to live in their own world again.
Richter worked exclusively in black and white for this series of work depicting nothing and everything at the same time. The photographic paintings are not just an image. You can feel a distinctive sadness, you experience real tragedy of history. “Helplessness is the great theme in painting, or rather the strongest motivation for and during painting“. - Richter taken from an interview
I don’t think I can talk about his whole career in this post and I will never manage to capture the value his paintings have with this blog post anyway and hence I will stop rambling on. "To talk about painting is not only difficult but perhaps pointless, too," - Richter I’ll leave a range of links and recommendations bellow if you want to dive into his work.
So, where do you start? I think it is quite hard to appreciate many abstract artworks without knowing the context in which they fit in. If you cant exited yourself about richter from reading and seeing his work i I can’t recommend the movie “Never look away (Werk ohne Autor)” by Florian Henckel enough! This lengthy film will bring you directly into Richters life. I needs to be remarked however, that the film is not directly depicting richters life but rather using his works and biography to put together a exciting thriller. It is an absolutely beautiful film about the creation and process of art that I think lives on in many art students today. Here is a rather negative review of the film that you should read after watching the film https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-20/never-look-away-film-review-gerhard-richter-painting-german/11224628 It highlights some of the issues with the film. That being said the film is still beautiful :) If you’re not up for a 3 hour film flip through the Mets short summary of his work: https://www.metmuseum.org/primer/gerhard-richter#a-master-of-painting They are hopefully opening their two floor exhibition on richters life soon once we can get over the corona pandemic. I also recommend flipping through his website where he has categorized all of his works : https://www.gerhard-richter.com/en/ The web-design is a bit outdated but you’re going there to look at art and not web-design so it doesn’t bother me too much.
Now for the more dedicated fans here are a bunch of excellent articles: New York times: The Sublime Farewell of Gerhard Richter, Master of Doubt The New Yorker: The Dark Revelations of Gerhard Richter Gerhart Richter in the Studio Interview (video) Spiegel German Horror (in German)
