Arrivals & Departures Unknown - 03 August 2022 Dr. Gerald R. Mack
From the page of Stephen D. Bruce:
Gerry Mack RIP
Abby and I visited Nancy and Gerry yesterday afternoon. I was able to tell him how much knowing him and working with him and singing with him had meant to me and so many of us. I reflected on the literally millions of people that had been touched by his performances and those of his many students and their many students. And I told him we’ll always laugh and sing beneath God’s clear, blue sky.
He passed away peacefully this morning.
RIP
Dr. Gerald R. Mack, 2014 recipient of the Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award, is a nationally-known conductor, educator, and mentor. He was conductor of the Worcester Chorus in Massachusetts for 28 years (1977–2005), founder and leader for 15 years (1995–2000) of the Great Waters Music Festival in Wolfeboro, NH, and Director of Choral Activities and a faculty member for 27 years at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, Connecticut.
After retiring to Nantucket in 1999, he became the Executive Director of the Nantucket Community Music Center; he later established the Nantucket Art Council's highly successful winter concert series. The Worcester Chorus established a scholarship in his name in 2010.Dr. Mack has worked with Gunther Schuller, Yehudi Menuin, Michael Lancaster, Seiji Ozawa, and Aaron Copland, among others. His choruses have performed at Carnegie Hall, Tully Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Jordan Hall, and Washington’s National Cathedral, as well as at many of the great concert halls of Europe.
He has conducted at the New York Mostly Mozart Festival, the Salzburg Music Festival, the International Dubrovnik Music Festival, and the Oaxaca Spring Festival (with the Mexican National Symphony).A dedicated educator with a deep commitment to colleagues and students, Dr. Mack has a national reputation as an adjudicator, lecturer, clinician and guest conductor. His high school choirs appeared at numerous MENC conventions (of the National Association for Music Education).
In 1961, his school chorus was invited to represent the U.S. at the International Music Educators’ Convention in Vienna. His Hartt choral groups were frequently selected to appear at American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conventions throughout the U.S., and he conducted many All State and Divisional Festival Choruses. While at Hartt, he organized and hosted the first ACDA Eastern Division Convention.
One product of his involvement with the Connecticut Commission on the Arts was the Greater Hartford Youth Chorale, which Dr. Mack and his wife organized for the first annual Hartford Arts Festival. That initiative became an ongoing program which continued for 10 years, providing special musical opportunities for suburban and inner-city young people from 22 high schools in the Hartford area.
Dr. Mack has degrees in Music Education and choral conducting from the University of New York at Fredonia (bachelors) and from Columbia University (masters and doctorate).

Black History Month: African Americans in Pennsylvania
February is Black History Month and to celebrate, we’re highlighting some of our titles in African American and race studies.
About today’s pick:
From the onset of the modern civil rights and black power movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s through recent times, scholarship on Pennsylvania's African American experience proliferated. Unfortunately, much of it is scattered in books and journals that are not easily accessible. Under the editorship of Joe W. Trotter and Eric Ledell Smith, African Americans in Pennsylvania brings together an outstanding array of this scholarship and makes it accessible to a wider audience, including general as well as professional students of the black experience.
This volume, co-published with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, offers the most comprehensive history of the state's black history to date. Chapters emphasize the interplay of class and race from the origins of the Commonwealth during the seventeenth century, through the era of deindustrialization in the late twentieth century. We see not only poor and working-class people but also educated business and professional people. And although scholarship has traditionally focused on the experiences of black men, this volume includes significant research on black women. Most important, this volume suggests a conceptual framework for a historical synthesis of the state's African American experience.
In his introduction, Trotter assesses the strengths and limitations of existing scholarship, showing how it is built on the contributions of nineteenth-century pioneers as well as those of the first generation of professional historians, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Richard R. Wright, and Edward Raymond Turner. Chapters are grouped into four interlocking parts that correspond to important changes in Pennsylvania's political economy. Each part includes a brief substantive introduction that ties together the themes of the ensuing chapters. This format enables readers to develop their own synthesis of key socioeconomic and political changes in the state's African American experience over more than three centuries of time.
African Americans in Pennsylvania shows how ordinary people have influenced the culture, institutions, and politics of African American communities in Pennsylvania. In the process, it documents the ways that black people have influenced, and continue to influence, the state as a whole.
Contributors are Elijah Anderson, John F. Bauman, R. J. M. Blackett, John E. Bodnar, Carolyn Leonard Carson, Dennis C. Dickerson, Gerald G. Eggert, V. P. Franklin, Laurence Glasco, Peter Gottlieb, Theodore Hershberg, Leroy T. Hopkins, Norman P. Hummon, Emma Jones Lapsansky, Janice Sumler Lewis, Frederic Miller, Edward K. Muller, Gary B. Nash, Merl E. Reed, Harry C. Silcox, Jean R. Soderlund, and Joe W. Trotter, Jr.
Joe W. Trotter Jr. is Mellon Bank Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University. His books include Coal, Class, and Color: Blacks in Southern West Virginia, 1915–1932 (1990) and The Great Migration in Historical Perspective: New Dimensions of Race, Class, and Gender (1991) (editor).
Eric Ledell Smith is a historian at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. He is the author of Bert Williams: A Biography of the Pioneer Black Comedian (1992) and Blacks in Opera: An Encyclopedia of People and Companies, 1873–1993 (1995).

USA: Michael Dease "Never More Here" catalog: PR8201 release date: October 25, 2019 (Posi-Tone 2019)
Michael Dease "Never More Here" catalog: PR8201 release date: October 25, 2019
Trombonist Michael Dease pays fitting tribute to his ongoing relationship with the music of Charlie Parker on his aptly entitled album “Never More Here.” The album runs much deeper than a simple collection of Bird tunes. The program seeks to provide a musical compendium of Bird's message and his personal influence on Dease and other members of the Jazz diaspora via the compositions and performances of several key proteges and devotees of his music. To provide assistance in bringing his vision to fruition, Dease assembled an all-star lineup of musicians including alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Gerald Cannon, and powerhouse drummer Lewis Nash, along with a number of special guests like Randy Brecker, Rufus Reid, and Jocelyn Gould. With a thoughtful program of inspired performances and an inclusive message of influence, “Never More Here” remains focused, insightful, steadily swinging, and refreshingly melodic enough to evoke a wide assortment of bright moments to discerning jazz fans everywhere. 1. Mirror Image (R. Rosnes) 6:45 2. A Harmonic Future (J. Heath) 6:06 3. Slow Dance (E. Daniels) 6:00 4. For Hofsa (J. McLean) 5:51 5. I Wish I Knew (B. Taylor) 4:36 6. Blue Jay (M. Dease) 7:44 7. Behold, the most absurd all-time NBA 2k lineups for every team
You had great suggestions for each team’s all-time starting 5. I, on the other hand, had terrible ones.
Dope news: NBA 2K18 will allow you the chance to play with the best possible all-time roster for all 30 NBA franchises. Ever wonder how your favorite team’s legends of yesteryear mesh with your best players today? Wonder no more, thanks to the magic of sports’ best video game.
This got us thinking about who would make each franchise’s all-time starting 5. So, we asked you and tracked your responses.
It also got me thinking about the dumbest all-time starting 5s I could put together for each team. (Why? I don’t know. I gave up trying to figure out my brain years ago).
Below are the answers to both of those questions. If you can come up with a weirder all-time starting 5 for your favorite team, let me know in the comments.
ATLANTA HAWKS
My pointless lineup
PG: Acie Law III SG: Dion Glover SF: Dominique Wilkins PF: Rasheed Wallace C: Jon Koncak

BOSTON CELTICS
My pointless lineup
PG: John Bagley SG: Dana Barros SF: Todd Day PF: Dino Radja C: Greg Kite

Wells Fargo Leaders Reaped Lavish Pay Even as Account Scandal Unfolded
If you were Chairman of the Board at Wells Fargo, what would you do upon realizing that fired and disgraced former CEO John Stumpf who oversaw a fraud that included 2 million bank accounts opened without customer consent, now owns 2.5 million shares of company stock valued at $147 million, and will realize pretax earnings of more than $83 million by exercising vested stock options, amassed over his 34 years at the bank, more than double the $41 million in unvested stock awards that Mr. Stumpf forfeited because of the bank’s sales scandal: (1) seek to claim back some of the stock and income or (2) do nothing since punishment had already been issued? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Wells Fargo and its leaders have expressed much contrition about the bank’s misdeeds, which included setting up as many as 2 million bank accounts without customers’ consent. Top executives have surrendered more than $90 million in compensation, fired employees at all levels and vowed to clean house.
But the top executives — particularly the current chief executive and his predecessor, who retired under pressure in October — still took home lavish sums last year, according to a regulatory filing this week.
Wells Fargo’s former chief executive, John G. Stumpf, realized pretax earnings of more than $83 million by exercising vested stock options, amassed over his 34 years at the bank, and receiving payouts on certain stock awards. That is more than double the $41 million in unvested stock awards that Mr. Stumpf forfeited because of the bank’s sales scandal.
In a quirk of timing that might raise some questions, one month before regulators announced penalties against Wells Fargo over its long-running fake accounts scheme, Mr. Stumpf exercised 1.5 million options, a significant chunk of his vested holdings.
“He took his winning tickets to the window while the window was still open,” said Brian T. Foley, an executive compensation consultant who analyzed Mr. Stumpf’s transactions. “He forfeited a significant sum, but at the end of the day, what he walked away with was even more significant.”
Mr. Stumpf did not sell any of his shares. After surrendering a large chunk to cover taxes and the cost of converting his options, he retained those that remained. Directly and through trusts, he now owns 2.5 million Wells Fargo shares, some 800,000 shares more than he held a year ago. His stake is valued at $147 million. Wells Fargo’s rules limit how many shares its executive officers can sell, but the restrictions on Mr. Stumpf will expire a year after his retirement.
A Wells Fargo spokesman declined to comment on Mr. Stumpf’s stock transactions.
The bank’s new leader, Timothy J. Sloan, also received a pay bump last year despite giving up his cash bonus and some stock awards. Mr. Sloan collected compensation of around $13 million, up from the $11 million he took home a year earlier.
The details of Wells Fargo’s executive compensation are infuriating to some shareholder activists, who have been calling for major reforms. At next month’s annual shareholders meeting, the bank’s top executives will confront disgruntled investors, including an order of nuns who say they are embarrassed to call Wells Fargo their bank, and Gerald R. Armstrong, who has held the bank’s stock for nearly 50 years and thinks the “lap dogs” on the bank’s board need to be replaced by a “growling Doberman.”
The nuns, members of Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, want to see Wells Fargo commit to “real, systemic change in culture, ethics, values and financial sustainability,” said Sister Nora M. Nash, the order’s director of corporate social responsibility.
At next month’s meeting, to be held in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., shareholders will vote on a proposal from the sisters asking the bank for a full accounting on the “root causes” of its fraudulent activity, and the steps being taken to prevent future misdeeds.
Wells Fargo’s board opposes the proposal, which Sister Nora called a disappointment. “We believe that we will get a strong yes vote from shareholders,” she said.
The A.F.L.-C.I.O. supports the resolution.
“We think this issue is so material to investors that it’s deserving of a hearing at the shareholder meeting,” said Brandon Rees, the deputy director of the A.F.L.-C.I.O.’s investment office.
Wells Fargo said it was already preparing to disclose more information about its misdeeds. Next month, the bank’s board plans to release the results of its investigation into the wrongdoing, which prompted the firing of about 5,300 rank-and-file workers over the past few years.
While the investigators’ findings have not yet been made public, Wells Fargo has begun to act on them. Four senior executives — including the former chief risk officer of the bank’s retail banking division and two regional presidents — were ousted last month after being accused of wrongdoing. The company released no details on their actions.
“We are taking decisive steps,” said Mark Folk, a Wells Fargo spokesman. “We are focused on making things right for our customers, fixing the problems and building a better Wells Fargo.”
Wells Fargo has been in turmoil since its admission in September that over the course of several years, employees trying to meet aggressive sales quotas had opened as many 2 million fraudulent accounts. The company paid $185 million to settle cases brought by two federal regulators and the Los Angeles city attorney and refunded $3.2 million to customers who were charged fees on unauthorized accounts.
But a number of other investigations are continuing, including criminal inquiries by the Justice Department and several state attorneys general.
The scandal has reverberated throughout the banking industry. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada said this week that it would review banks’ practices in light of reports that employees at TD Bank, under pressure to meet sales targets, had opened accounts without customers’ consent.
Some activists see the Wells Fargo scandal as a fresh sign, in the aftermath of the financial crisis, that the largest banks have grown too big to manage. A proposal submitted by Bartlett Naylor, the financial policy advocate at Public Citizen, asks Wells Fargo’s stockholders to consider breaking up the bank.
The company’s sales scandal, he said, illustrates that “senior officials either directed the fraud or were incapable of preventing it.”
Mr. Naylor, a longtime critic of large banks, does not expect his proposal to draw much support. A similar proposal he initiated at JPMorgan Chase last year “did worse than the opponent in a North Korean election,” he acknowledged. (Fewer than 3 percent of JPMorgan’s shareholders voted for it.)
And Republicans in Washington are clamoring for less stringent oversight and fewer regulatory restraints on big banks, not more, and moving to reverse the Obama administration’s wave of stronger regulations.
Subtler moves could also work in Wells Fargo’s favor: The Labor Department, which began an investigation last year into the bank’s treatment of its employees, has stopped publicizing its enforcement actions and fines.
Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor who is the bank’s largest shareholder, believes the crisis will fade, with little lasting damage.
“I don’t think, in terms of the earning power of the company in five years from now, it’s material,” he said in a recent interview with CNBC.
Mr. Buffett is not the only investor feeling bullish. Wells Fargo’s shares closed at a record high of $59.73 earlier this month.

USA: Michael Dease "Never More Here"(Posi-Tone 2019)
