snippet, this time from Oscar's pov.
i feel like i have to mention, i am writing neurodivergent landoscar because i'm a neurodivergent person and it's nice to see representation in fanfics as well as books. Oscar is autistic in this fic and Lando has adhd
find the previous two here and here
i hope you enjoy!! as always feedback is appreciated. i can't tell you when this project is going to be finished because it just keeps growing. tysm for @mintraindrop for betaing my messy drafts and encouraging my brainworms!! and @svncourt too for the encouragement and feedback! you guys are amazing
"He is on his way back to the car, half given up on thinking about the perfect Christmas gift for Lando. He may be better off straight up asking him if he wants anything specific. That's when he sees it. In the display window of a bookshop he is passing, is a recipe book - Make Chocolate Like a Pro - with a very familiar name on it. Franco Colapinto. Huh, wasn't he a classmate of Oscar's? Oscar is pretty sure he was. If his memory is correct, he might just have found the solution to his dilemma. He makes a mental note of contacting Franco once he is home from shopping, and he goes to purchase the book for good measure. In case Franco doesn't get back to him, he will have a backup plan. He finally makes it to the car with a pleased smile on his face.
He drives to one of the grocery stores on the outskirts of the city. It's still decently big, but way less crowded than any one located in the city centre. He will gladly travel the extra distance if it means he can do his shopping in relative peace, far away from the loud crowds.
The first Christmas after Lando and he moved to Monaco was a nightmare. They were new in the restaurant business, with their popularity still skyrocketing, while also trying to find their place in the big glamorous city that is Monte Carlo. Between his first holiday season in his own restaurant, celebrity bookings for almost every dinner service and having to do their own holiday prep, too, it quickly became too much for Oscar. The last straw was his grocery run for Christmas - it was all too loud, too bright and too much for Oscar. He ended up calling Lando in the middle of dinner service. Of course, his husband was with him in less than 10 minutes. How Lando got away from work and found him in the busy store so fast, he didn't know, didn't ask, just clung to Lando like his life depended on it. Lando took him home, got him cozy and sat with him until his meltdown was finally over.
The next day his husband came up with an idea - they'd go to a more remote store for groceries around the holidays. Less people, less noise but it still has everything they could need. He didn't let Oscar go on his own and Oscar was immensely thankful for that. Lando's idea ended up working really well, they ended up implementing it for any future grocery runs around major holidays. Lando also got him a few pairs of compact earplugs in different colours and noise reduction qualities. He said he wanted Oscar to have a quick and easy solution available for him in case he gets overstimulated while out in the city. Oscar shed a few tears and kissed his husband silly under the Christmas lights.
As usual, the store was quiet, with only a few employees working away on the aisles. Oscar made quick work collecting everything from his seemingly never ending shopping list. He was pretty sure he had half the baking section in his shopping cart - occupational hazard, he told the cashier when she asked if he was baking for an army.
He had planned to make six different desserts this year, excluding his usual batch of gingerbread. Lando's mum sent him her family recipe book with a bunch of recipes from Lando's Belgian grandma in it and he was planning on trying a few of them out. He already had the Mattentaart uit Geraardsbergen recipe he found in the book and also tried the Speculaas recipe Cisca gave him. Sometimes it was a blessing to have a fully equipped professional kitchen at his disposal and a very oblivious husband who rarely questioned anything pastry related Oscar did. He gladly ate anything Oscar gave him though.
He gets the shopping done sooner than planned, he has plenty of time to make the gingerbread dough and maybe the Speculaas as well before Lando gets home. He puts the groceries away and compiles the ingredients he will need for the two doughs. The spices are very similar in both recipes, so the kitchen island stays relatively empty. He also goes on a hunt for his cookie cutters. They come in all shapes and sizes, taking up multiple boxes - a very versatile collection he's compiled over the years. He gets distracted halfway, realising that their pantry is in need of reorganising. It takes another hour and a half for him to finally get to mixing the doughs, but the pantry is clean and organised now. He hums away as he is kneading the dough, already thinking about the fun shapes and patterns he will decorate the gingerbreads with. "

The beauty of Flemish tapestries.
From the 13th century till the 17th century, Flanders, Hainaut and Brabant were the epicentres of tapestry making. It were the most expensive pieces of art ( more expensive than paintings for example) from the Middle Ages till halfway the baroque period. They sometimes had silver or gold woven in it to give it more lustre. Initially only for sovereigns and the highest eclastical individuals, made on commission. The cartoons were originally made by the weavers, later by local artists, and later cartoons were sometimes made abroad and send to be woven in the workshops of the Southern Netherlands (read: Belgium and Northern France). Cities of tapestry making were among others. Atrecht (Arras : in italian tapestry are arazzi), Bruges, Tournai, Edingen, Oudenaarde, Geraardsbergen, Brussels. Even though Flanders was only one of the counties of the Southern Netherlands, the concept of Flemishis apllied to a wider area were Flemish culture was spread.
After Louis XIV broke the monopolies of the workshops in the Southern Netherlands after conquering territorirs during the Wars of the Spanish Succession, he brought over weavers from those lands and the Manufacture des Gobelins near Paris was being established, since then the French created their own style of tapestries, along with a reviving of a production in Aubusson, were flemish weaving techniques were already introduced during the 14th century and a small regional production was already established for wall and floor tapestry and for upholstery.
Many tapestries located in the areas conquered by the French Revolutionist mobs were burned in an attempt to retrieve the silver and gold ... resulting in the fact there are seemingly more surviving flemish (and french) tapestries to be found in England, Spain or Italy.
But the tapestries in this post, these are on display in the Castle of Gaasbeek, located south west of Brussels. They belong to a collection that was established during the 19th century.
One of the series of tapestries in the castle are the so-called Carrabara or Gypsy Suite dates from the Tournai studio of Arnould Poissonier and dates from ca. 1500-1525.
During the Flemish Renaissance period (sixteenth century), Tournai was one of the most important centers for tapestry production. People mainly wove with wool and silk. Typical details are the strongly defined folds in the clothing and the grass tufts that protrude everywhere in the landscape. Tournai carpets were known for their intense, contrasting colours. This is still noticeable, although the colors have faded. For example, the yellow has almost disappeared, making the green – which consists of a mixture of blue and yellow – increasingly bluer.
Gypsies used to be very distrusted, as a strange people of musicians, dancers and fortune tellers, but at the same time they were fascinating because of their unclear origins and their colorful customs. So ideal inspiration to make a tapestry about, as a conversation piece.
