Past Photo Favorites - Sacred Datura Flowers AKA Western Jimsonweed A Favorite Flower of artist Georgia O’Keeffe. More from Wikipedia: “Datura stramonium, known by the English names jimsonweed or devil's snare, is a plant in the nightshade family. It is believed to have originated in Mexico, but has now become naturalized in many other regions. Other common names for D. stramonium include thornapple and moon flower, and it has the Spanish name toloache. Other names for the plant include hell's bells, devil's trumpet, devil's weed, tolguacha, Jamestown weed, stinkweed, locoweed, pricklyburr, false castor oil plant, devil's cucumber, and thornapple. Datura has been used in traditional medicine to relieve asthma symptoms and as an analgesic during surgery or bonesetting. It is also a powerful hallucinogen and deliriant, which is used entheogenically for the intense visions it produces. However, the tropane alkaloids responsible for both the medicinal and hallucinogenic properties are fatally toxic in only slightly higher amounts than the medicinal dosage, and careless use often results in hospitalizations and deaths.” - Wikipedia #PastPhotoFavorites #SacredDatura #Jimsonweed #WesternJimsonweed #GeorgiaOKeeffeFlower #Flowers #NewMexicoFlowers #Naturalist #PhotoByJeriRae (at Santa Fe, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnzzqjGPHjA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Oriental Poppies" (1927) is reproduced from 'Georgia O’Keeffe,' published to accompany the survey currently on view @museothyssen “Flowers – explicitly recognizable – first appeared in the artist’s work in 1919 in a series of watercolors based on calla lily motifs,” Didier Ottinger writes. “O’Keeffe’s interest in flowers as subject matter was stimulated by her visit to Charles Demuth, an artist belonging to the Stieglitz circle who had been painting them since 1905. During the 1920s, they became his main subjects. Demuth’s pictures convinced O’Keeffe of the artistic validity of flowers as motifs and encouraged her to explore the best style for turning them into a highly personal subject matter. From 1925, O’Keeffe depicted flowers from a closer viewpoint, so that they filled the whole picture space. This progression to close-up was brought about by the combined influence of photography and her attention to the phenomenology of the modern city. As a firsthand witness to the artistic revolution led by a new generation of photographers (Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams…) under the banner of ‘Straight Photography,’ she had plenty of time to meditate on what could be learned from their approach, in which the use of blow-up acted as both a formal and an emotional intensifier. O’Keeffe aspired to this intensification to adapt her art to the phenomena of the modern city: ‘In the twenties, huge buildings sometimes seemed to be going up overnight in New York. At that time I saw a painting by Fantin-Latour, a still life with flowers I found very beautiful, but I realized that were I to paint the same flowers so small, no one would look at them because I was unknown. So I thought I’ll make them big like the huge buildings going up.’” Read more via linkinbio. IMAGE CREDIT: "Oriental Poppies," 1927, Oil on canvas. 76.7 x 102.1 cm, Collection of the Frederick R. Sacred Datura - Did you ever wonder why it has “sacred” as a part of its name? So did I! Here’s what I found out: “Since ancient times, sacred datura and its relatives have been used for medicinal and ceremonial purposes, by holy men and medicine men, by sorcerers and witches.58 The pounded root was an all-purpose cure, good for cuts, bruises and gunshot wounds.34 Gamblers kept a root in their pocket to enable them to foresee the cards and guide their bets.34 Native Americans in southern California also used sacred datura for medicinal and ceremonial purposes. It was the most important medicinal plant of the Chumash.15 The Luiseño used the smoke to relieve the pain of rheumatism and earaches.17 Medicine men of the Chumash, Luiseño, and Kumeyaay* used sacred datura to produce hallucinations during puberty rites.15,17,18 A young Chumash boy was given a liquid from pounded datura root. The resulting dreams revealed a spirit guardian, or “dream helper” to give him guidance in the future.15 In spite of its extreme toxicity, sacred datura is a popular garden plant.24 The International Brugmansia and Datura Society74 is dedicated to the culture and cultivation of Datura and two closely related genera.” - Nature Collective #SacredDatura #JimsonWeed #GeorgiaOKeeffeFlower #IndigenousAmericanRitual #Wildflower #Toxic #PoisonousFlower #WhySacredDaturaIsSacred #InterestingFacts (at Santa Fe, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChymxFfgAhX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1" (1932) is from new release, 'Georgia O’Keeffe,' published by D.A.P. & @museothyssen The editors write, "The Jimson Weed was one of O’Keeffe’s favorite flowers. She grew the night blooming flower at her home in Abiquiú, allowing the blossoms to spread before realizing they were poisonous. The plant’s dual nature, its importance to the Indians, drew O’Keeffe to the flower which she transformed into a powerful statement of harmonized shape and color: ‘The Jimson weed blooms in the cool of the evening – […] Don Juan speaks of uses the Yaqui Indians make of the Jimson weed that almost make one afraid. When I found that they are poisonous, I dug them up but in Abiquiú, a few keep on growing persistently. Now when I think of the delicate fragrance of the flowers, I almost feel the coolness and sweetness of the evening.'" Read more via linkinbio. Image credit: Georgia O'Keeffe, "Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1," 1932, Oil on canvas, 48 × 40 in. Jimson Weed Blossoms in simulated stained glass By Jeri Rae ***************************************** If you’re a fan of Georgia O’Keeffe you may recognize these flowers as one of her favorite flowers to paint. Jimson Weed known in Spanish as Toloache is a toxic plant in the nightshade family that has been used in folk medicine but the line between fatally toxic and “medicine” is very fine so it’s best not to ingest this plant. #JimsonWeed #JimsonWeedBlossom #Art #Artistic #GeorgiaOKeeffeFlower #SimulatedStainedGlass #VirtualStainedGlass #NewMexicoPlant https://www.instagram.com/p/B8SaUMJAWnr/?igshid=1fyjfacbn67ij
