I really loved this finale. It felt like excellent story telling that really connected back to the pilot and came full circle in a beautiful way.
Not gonna lie, I wish Max had stayed but the way it played out really did make sense for his story. And I was beyond happy that he was making Luna a priority while not giving up who he is (like he was practically forced to do in London). I was so relieved with Iggy and Martin, I felt like they were purposely putting me through torture with that one. I think before Wildwin, Iggy x Martin was definitely my OTP of the show, so it was nice to see their story come to a wonderful close. I was so glad that Lauren reunited with her sister, that Floyd got the family he wanted, and that if Wilder had to stay behind, that she got to take over for Max with New Amsterdam. It was an amazing end for a lovely show and I couldn't be more grateful, especially with the Luna twist (my God, talk about spectacular writing, they really did close every layer up minus the one they planned to leave open). I've been watching since day 1 and that to me was definitely a finale worth celebrating.
I know maybe some might not care for the open Wildwin ending, but personally, I loved it. I think Max made his decision back a couple of episodes ago and I think that was really powerful. Despite Max's leaving, what happened between these two and how they left things just felt right to me and open with possibility like the showrunner says here.
You know, when Sharpwin started being hinted at in the show, I despised it. Not because Max and Helen didn't have chemistry, not because Ryan and Freema weren't enjoyable to watch on screen together, but because it felt as if the show quickly killed Georgia off to do fanservice. (and if you've been following me here for a while, you know by now how much I hate that LOL) But I tried my best to give it a shot when it went canon. Despite loathing Helen's response with "I should have never let you in" while Max was happy and glowing, completely in love with her and wanting to show her. But regardless, I slowly came to appreciate it, especially after Helen's speech on the bridge. They had finally showed to the audience, in my opinion, just how real it was for both of them, why it could actually work, and just why Max was making this move. So I was on board. I rooted for the little family they were creating. Then I really couldn't stand it when it became obvious that Max was basically forced into giving up everything in order to make Helen happy by following her to London, though you could tell her heart wasn't fully in it. (I had no idea what was going on bts with Freema's decision to leave the show btw)
For me, not to sound harsh in regards to Max, the moment she jilted him wasn't what had me angry at the pairing again. (that's not to diminish what happened or what he went through) It was the fact that she allowed Luna to call her 'Mummy', allowed Max to keep telling Luna that she was indeed her mom and that they were going to be a family, and then did what she did. Here's the thing: cold feet, I get it. And Iggy was right, Helen was going through A LOT. But doing that to Luna and basically abandoning her...that's unforgivable in my book. Luna had already lost one mom that she never knew and Helen knew that. Tbf to her, she had been hesitant about the mom thing at first when Max went full throttle, but she eventually went with it and formed a full bond with Luna as her mom. And then she just disappears (again, I get it, Freema left the show) from the kid's life, not even making sure she's okay, regardless of where she left things with her dad. Unforgivable.
So for me, Wildwin when it first started being hinted at was such a nice contrast. Don't get me wrong, I love the friends-to-lovers trope, the slow burns, and the whole healing process from a broken heart & falling in love with "what's good for you" but Ryan and Sandra definitely had chemistry, Wilder was there for Max, and I was so glad when the writers went with it. And I was thrilled when Max chose Wilder over Helen, his future vs his past like they say in this article. (and that shot of Luna with Wilder was adorable btw!)
But saying all of that, I'm more than okay with where they left things with Wildwin. I would have been massively disappointed if Max left to find Helen again, taking Luna with him, breaking it off with Wilder in the process. I'm okay with staying open-ended on this one because it leaves things open for possibilities. And while we got closure on the other characters' stories, if you think about it, we really got the theme of "open possibility" with all of them as well. Iggy and Martin have started a new beginning; Lauren and her sister are starting a new beginning together; Floyd is starting a new beginning with his relationship along with his family embracing his dad being around again. And of course, Luna was given her own new beginning as well, which was all tied beautifully to the moments these people chose to become doctors.
I just wanted to gush a little over it. I just really appreciated that they finished out this story right and didn't fall short on anything while attempting to bring it full circle while also bringing it to a close. I will miss these characters but damn if there won't be a rewatch in my future at some point lol.
What a fantastic show!

Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson: The Well-Meaning, Incredibly Self-Centered Leading Men We’ve Grown to Love.
Hey fam! Like I said, I’ve been writing a ton of meta lately and this is another one that’s just been sitting in my drafts. It’s basically a This Is Us and a New Amsterdam meta which is something I haven’t done before but something I want do more of. In my Game of Thrones days I used to write a lot of meta about shows and characters that had similarities so this is fun for me. I hope y’all enjoy this. ALSO THIS HAS SPOILERS FOR BOTH SHOWS!!!!!!!
Without a doubt the two most popular shows on NBC is This is Us and New Amsterdam. And what’s not to love? They’re both emotionally driven, heartfelt, shows that focus on incredibly deep and complex topics. Though one show focuses on family dynamics and the other focuses on the healthcare system, these shows are very similar in more ways than one. Case in point, Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson. The more I watch these two shows, the more I realize how these two characters are so alike!!! These two men are kind-hearted, well intentioned, individuals who genuinely want to make some sort of positive difference. They are incredibly ambitious and always have “bright ideas” and “goals” they want to accomplish and somehow they’re able to meet those goals without ever having to sacrifice their wants and needs. By every definition these men are the “main characters” or the ultimate “protagonists.” These are the folks that we are supposed to root for. At the same time, though these men have many traits to be admired, when you truly look at it both of them can be incredibly self centered and selfish especially when it pertains to their romantic partners and love interests. No matter how appealing you make these characters out to be these men clearly fall under the Behind Every Great Man trope.
The Behind Every Great Man trope has been used countless of times throughout Cinema and TV History that I’m sure that I don’t even have to explain it to you but for the sake of this meta this is how it’s defined.
“Behind Every Great Man...stands an even greater woman! Or in about a hundred variations is a Stock Phrase referring to how people rarely achieve greatness without support structures that go generally unappreciated, and said support structure is a traditionally female role via being the wife, mother, or sometimes another relation. This trope is specifically about a man who is credited with something important, but owes much of his success to the woman in his life.”
This trope usually has a negative connotation (and rightfully so) because the man who often benefits from this is an asshole and unworthy of this type of support!
For example:
Oliva and Fitz
Cristina Yang and Burke
Cookie and Lucious
Ghost and Tasha
There are countless others but these are a few of the couples that come to mind for me. Randall and Max aren’t comparable to any of these men that are listed above but they are still operating under the same trope. It just looks nicer because Max and Randall are inherently good and inspirational. They are the heroes of the story. I would even argue and say that both men fall under the Chronic Hero Syndrome trope which is defined as
“Chronic Hero Syndrome is an "affliction" of cleaner heroes where for them, every wrong within earshot must be righted, and everyone in need must be helped, preferably by Our Hero themself. While certainly admirable, this may have a few negative side-effects on the hero and those around them. Such heroes could wear themselves out in their attempts to help everyone or become distraught and blame themselves for the one time that they're unable to save the day. Spending so much time and effort saving everyone else can also put a strain on the hero's personal or dating life.”
Just because Max and Randall have these incredibly inspiring aspirations, is it fair that their wives and love interests are always expected to rise to the occasion and support them. Is it ok for their partners to continuously sacrifice their wants and needs because they love these men?
Let’s dive into it.
Truth be told, Beth Pearson, Helen Sharpe and Georgia Goodwin had to endure a GREAT DEAL to emotionally support the dreams and aspirations of these men while sacrificing so much of themselves in the process. In media we often see women sacrificing so much of their wants and needs out of love for these male leads and rarely do men do the same thing for their romantic partners and love interests. All three of these women clearly fall under the Act of True Love trope defined as
“The Act of True Love proves beyond doubt that you are ready to put your loved one's interests before your own, that you are truly loyal and devoted to them. Usually this involves a sacrifice on your part, at the very least a considerable effort and/or a great risk. The action must be motivated, not by morals or principle or expectation of future reward, but by sheer personal affection. When your beloved is in dire need of your help, or in great danger, and you do something, at great expense to yourself, for the sake of their safety, their welfare, or their happiness, thus proving beyond any doubt that you put their interest ahead of yours.”
Over the past few seasons we have seen all three of these women truly live up to this trope without any true consequences or accountability from the men they’re making all these sacrifices for. For example, in Beth and Randall’s marriage, how many times did Randall spring an idea on Beth without truly talking to her or considering her wants first? Everyone thinks these two are an ideal couple but she has endured A LOT for Randall.
Randall has spontaneously quit his job, moved his dying biological dad into their home, bought his biological dad’s old apartment building, fostered and adopted a child and also ran for city councilman outside of his district. In all of these decisions, Randall “consulted” Beth about it but at the same time didn’t really consult her. In a way there has always been this expectation of Beth to just go along for the ride with what Randall wants. Is anyone else exhausted from reading that list?! That’s a lot for partner to endure and lovingly support. But Beth has endured and has been Randall’s rock through it all!!! What worries me is that the one time Beth spoke out about her wants and needs of pursuing dance again, he couldn’t match the same energy she was giving him and eventually it led to world war three between them. Though things are looking up in their relationship and he’s starting to support her more, has Randall nearly given to Beth as much as she’s given to him? Absolutely not!
Similar to Randall, Max also had a wife who was a dancer. in fact, she was a prima ballerina. Unlike Randall and Beth, Max relationship with Georgia was rocky from the start. When we were first introduced to them Max and Georgia were separated and rightfully so. Georgia was never Max’s first priority. The hospital always came first in their relationship. He couldn’t even dedicate a full night to her for their proposal. In order to “save” their marriage they decide to have a baby and they both committed to taking a step back in their careers in order to do so. The problem was Max didn’t keep his side of their commitment and took a job to become the medical director at the biggest public hospital in the U.S. She gave up her career to start a family and he totally and completely betrayed her trust. So throughout season one we see them trying to rebuild their marriage but even in the midst of trying to rebuild a marriage based on trust and mutual respect Max still keeps things from Georgia. For several episodes he didn’t tell her that he had advance stages of throat cancer. He only told her when Georgia asked him to move back home. That’s fucked up! Then throughout their pregnancy he was never fully there for Georgia because he was either to preoccupied with the hospital or himself. At the end of it all, Georgia died tragically at the beginning of season two and really had nothing to show for it in her relationship with Max other than her daughter Luna.
Now let’s bring Helen Sharpe into the fold. While all of this stuff was going on with Max and his wife in season one, Max was developing a deep friendship, borderline emotional affair with Helen. Their relationship started out with Helen being his oncologist. As the new Medical Director of New Amsterdam, he swore Helen to secrecy about his diagnosis so that he could still run the hospital. Through that secrecy they eventually formed a deep bond but as his cancer got worse his secret was let out of the bag. He realistically needed someone to step up and run the hospital when he was going through chemo and though Helen already had commitments she stepped up and became his deputy medical director. Somewhere along the lines Max and Helen started developing feelings for each other. As Helen becomes aware of those feelings, she made a choice and decides to remove herself as Max’s doctor. He BITCHES about it but eventually accepts the boundary she’s clearly trying to set. Mind you, as this is unfolding, like Max, Helen is also in a new relationship with her boyfriend Panthaki. As Max’s cancer seems to be getting worse with his new doctor, she goes back on her boundary and decides to be his doctor again. This pisses her boyfriend off because he could already peep the vibe between them and he breaks up with her. When we get into season two, Max’s wife died and Helen set him up in a clinical trail (with a doctor she previously fired) that’s helping his cancer. Unbeknownst to Max, this doctor ends up holding his life saving treatment plan over Helen’s head and in order for his treatment to continue she gives this doctor half of her department!
Helen has sacrificed a lot for Max and now in season three she’s finally prioritizing her current wants and needs first! Like Randall, Max is starting to turn a page and is starting to support Helen and truly listen to the wants and needs that she has. All of this is good but my question is did any of these women have to sacrifice so much for the men in their lives to get a clue?
Why is it that this is a trope we see in media time and time and time again? Even if these men are good, why don’t we still keep these male characters accountable when they put their significant others in these situations that are clearly not fair? I’ve watched countless tv shows and I’ve seen a lot of tv couples but I think I have only come across one couple where the male counterpart has selflessly loved his significant other and has always put her needs above his own.
That character my friend is none other than PACEY WITTER
I might be mistaken but I think Joey and Pacey are the most popular ship in tv history and honestly, rightfully so! This is only example I can think of where the male in the relationship so willingly puts the wants and needs of his partner first. It is a completely selfless and sacrificial love. He never wants to hold her back and he never asks her to compromise her wants or needs for him. That’s why I think so many women love Pacey because in a sea of TV relationships, Pacey Witter is a fucking unicorn.
So to wrap this up does this mean that I hate Randall Pearson or Max Goodwin? No! I adore them. I love both of their characters so much. I just think that when we see the media continuously play out the sacrificial wife/love interest for the sake of their male counterparts, it should be called out. I’m all about sacrificial and selfless love but it should come from both sides.❤️❤️❤️
Anyway I hope y’all enjoy this! As always my DMs are opening here or on Twitter @oyindaodewale

New Amsterdam: Luna
Ok, so I just went back through and watched the ending again, because I fucking jumped off my couch last night in a panic because I did not see Sharpe anywhere.
My first reaction last night was, “oh god, is that Helen that they just covered?!” Now watching it back, I feel like Helen is still in the back of the ambulance.
The covered individual actually looks too big to be her, so I think it was the other paramedic. The guy from the E.R is dead, cause he was on the hood/in the windshield of his stolen ride. One of the paramedics is alive.
Lauren is...looking like she’s barely hanging on(girl was thrown from the fucking ambulance). Max and Luna look ok, I mean, Max definitely has a head wound, but aside from that looks ok.
Georgia...idk, I mean, I’m pretty sure her stomach is still open, but packed, and I just..I don’t think she’s gonna make it, plus even though the actress was pregnant and on leave when she had her baby, I just don’t see where her character arc has been developed. I mean, Lauren’s arc was developed and Janet Montgomery was pregnant and on leave as well(I’m pretty sure right around the same time as Lisa O’hare). Janet does have an upcoming project so, if they’re taking out a main character, it may be her, even if it’s just for half of the second season or something.
Now, the second paramedic we didn’t see. The covered body looks big enough to be him, but not small enough to be Helen. We didn’t see Helen, but I think the writers, etc want us to think it’s possible that it is Helen, since a large majority of us are Sharpwin shippers. From what I saw, it doesn’t look like Helen was thrown from the ambulance, she and Max were thrown into the other side of the ambulance when it flipped, etc. So, my thoughts are that she’s still alive, maybe in the ambulance still, unconscious or something. I just don’t think they’d kill her off. And I don’t see any upcoming projects or anything for Freema.

When COVID-19 shut down production last March, it especially hit hard for NBC’s New Amsterdam. The show not only films at several real-life hospitals, including Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and Metropolitan Hospital in Harlem, but it also had a pandemic storyline planned. Of course, not the coronavirus specifically.
“There was so much fear and anxiety at that time around the pandemic, we didn’t want to air an episode where people were getting sick left and right and further scare people,” says series star Ryan Eggold, who plays medical director Dr. Max Goodwin, in this exclusive interview.
But New Amsterdam will touch on the COVID-19 pandemic in its Season 3 premiere. It will feature a very powerful montage showing the doctors and nurses at work trying to save lives, working until they are exhausted, showing people getting vaccinated, and then moving into post-pandemic stories.
“Working on a hospital show, post-pandemic, our first responsibility is to tell the stories of the nurses and doctors who have worked so tirelessly to try to keep people safe and healthy,” Eggold continues. “Peter Horton directed that episode. And I think his and [executive producer] David [Schulner]’s intention was to honor the healthcare workers and what they’ve been through and start in that place of, this has been Ground Zero of fighting the pandemic, and it has taken its toll on everybody.”
From there, the story continues with Dr. Vijay Kapour’s (Anupam Kher) life hanging in the balance due to COVID, Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) unable to touch people as a result of lingering anxieties, Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) facing his eating disorder/body issues and Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) unable to give up her patients to their special-care physicians.
“It’s kind of like that wartime mentality with soldiers coming back and having trouble adjusting to civilian life,” Eggold says. “These doctors were so overwhelmed with patients, not enough beds and trying to keep up. What are the ramifications on their personal life and their psyche? And how do they get back to the new normal?”
Also, viewers will get a long-awaited moment between Max and Helen. Expect some resolution regarding their feelings for each other, despite the fact that Helen has moved on with new head trauma surgeon Dr. Cassian Shin (Daniel Dae Kim).
“I will say that I think Max and Helen have a unique relationship that they are forced to confront this season and figure out what it means for better or for worse, and finally name what has been unspoken for a while,” Eggold adds.
For more scoop on season 3 of New Amsterdam, read more of the interview with Eggold.
How did the New Amsterdam pandemic episode compare to what actually happened?
I haven’t seen that episode because it didn’t air, which is usually how I see them, so I would be curious to know myself. It’s pretty wild. It’s happened to the writers a few times where they’ve written something and then it happens later. But nobody could have predicted COVID was going to happen.
I saw the first two episodes and it feels like a sadder show this year. Will that continue?
No. There’s a lot of humor. I was saying to David, “Is Max getting too broad?” There has been a lot of humor on the show lately, which is nice. I think it’s important to find humor and joy amid a pandemic because we have to remind ourselves what we’re fighting for. The intention is not to make it super heavy and sad, but certainly in the beginning to discuss it; it is a heavy, overwhelming, larger-than-life situation that we’ve all been through.
Max also seems to have lost his “How can I help?” attitude–which is what inspired him to take the job and kept him going when he lost his wife. Will he get that back?
Yeah. I think it’s evolved from how can I help, or how can I fix the system and make it better, to how do we begin again? And how do we build from the ground up because we weren’t prepared for this and it changed a lot of things. I think his perspective has widened in a good way and he will see things differently this season.
What will be the new challenges for Max this season?
One thing is he’s a single dad who is trying to get his hospital through this pandemic. And he has left his daughter Luna with [late wife] Georgia’s parents in an effort to protect her and keep her safe as he is going to the hospital every day. But I think there’s a lot of guilt like, “Am I doing the right thing? Am I being a bad father by not being there? Am I neglecting her?” So, that’s something that he wrestles with.
Then the question of romance. Is there a partner for him to find and is he ready to start a relationship with someone after losing his wife? In the back of his mind, I think it’s something he wants, not only for himself but for his daughter.
There’s a moment where Max realizes that some of his great, crazy ideas aren’t always the right way to do things. Is he growing?
Absolutely. He’s a character who’s full of ambition to change things and to make things better. And he’s very headstrong and optimistic. He’s certainly overly idealistic about how to make those changes happen. The show is about finding out the reality of how that change happens. You have these lofty ideas of, “I want to make everything better, I want to do X, Y and Z,” and you can’t do that overnight, so what does it look like on a daily basis? How does change occur on a systemic level, which is certainly bigger than the individual?
To your point about admitting fault, I think he’s learning that he can’t do this on his own and he can’t change the world overnight and that you need other people. You can’t be a one-man band, so I think he’s going through a lot of change and evolving a lot.
What was it like filming in the hospital in March 2020?
Our last day of filming we were at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, and it was weird. People were starting to get nervous, “Should we be filming in a hospital?” We didn’t know a lot about it. Is this real? Is this really growing the way people say it’s going to grow? And very quickly, the world changed overnight.
It’s the right decision not to film in the hospital right now, not for our show, but to get out of the way of the hospitals and to let them function to the best of their capacity when there are so many serious things that need to be addressed. And, then for the show, to keep everybody safe, of course. But I hope we can get back to that once this pandemic is behind us because there’s always this wonderful authenticity to be found when we can shoot in those places because you are near the reality of healthcare so it helps you reflect that story.
Did it take New Amsterdam longer to come back because you had to change your filming locations?
We had to build a lot of sets. We had to build a lot of the hospital locations that we use, and we had to add more sets and locations we could film in. Then everybody was just making sure it was safe and making sure we had the practices and protocols in place to do our job, be safe and not put anybody at risk. To everyone’s credit, it feels really safe. We’re tested every day and we have a lot of protocols in place that keep the set running efficiently and safely. It’s a good place to be.
How did you handle the pandemic?
I look back and that was so much time that we had. I feel like I should have written a novel, climbed a mountain, or something. But, no, I slowly went crazy and did all the usual, like slept. I did do a fair amount of writing. I wrote a screenplay, trying to put my brain to work a little bit. I was in denial like, “This will only last a month of weird whatever.” Then a month goes by and you’re like, “I guess it’s still going.” Seven months go by and it was crazy. It was nice to slow down and catch up with family and unplug for a minute. I wish it had been under better circumstances and people’s lives weren’t at risk, but, yeah, there were some positives.

it took me a while to come around with lauren and leyla (i was a huge helen and lauren shipper, even though I knew it was never going to happen) but your tags about them are so good, they made me reconsider a lot of things i didn’t catch before. im totally on board with them now (do wish the writers gave some information about leyla’s past in this season though) but I still can’t seem to muster any interest in max and helen? it’s not the latent shipper in me, i just really find him insufferable? i feel like im part of the minority who just. wasn’t at all affected by their kiss at the end (but i do think they have tons of chemistry!)
my incoherent feels yelling getting you in your feels is the greatest compliment a person could receive on tumblr. honestly i was never really invested in any of the ships on NA before lauren x leyla but helen x lauren would have been a ship of dreams. agreed on leyla. we got information on her from these like information dump moments and i wish we had been able to sit more in these scenes. but at the same time it's hard not to give them a pass this season for only having 14 episodes to juggle 5 main characters. we're just scratching the surface though and fingers crossed shiva gets promoted to a more regular role next season so we get more on leyla.
i'm kind of in agreement with you on sharpwin. i personally like max as a character but i've always been ambivalent about him and helen. they're cute but never really got me invested. tbh i thought him and georgia were very sweet and i'm still a little salty they killed her off for his pain.

100 Encouraging Quotes to Help Keep You Going
Our latest collection of encouraging quotes that will inspire you to success. These quotes of encouragement will help you face anything today.
Each and every one of us needs words of encouragement from time to time.
We may feel bad that something did not go as planned, or we may be struggling with why something did not work. We may not understand why we were passed up for the promotion this time, or why people did not respond with enthusiasm to something we were sure they were going to love.
No matter the reason, sometimes all it takes are some quotes of encouragement to remind us that it is all going to be OK; that we will figure things out, and that everything really does happen for a purpose.
Below is a list of encouraging quotes from people far better than I, at providing you the motivation and inspiration that you need to lift you up and get you headed in the right direction.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: New Amsterdam (TV 2018) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Georgia Goodwin/Max Goodwin/Helen Sharpe, Max Goodwin/Helen Sharpe, Max Goodwin/Georgia Goodwin, Georgia Goodwin/Helen Sharpe Characters: Helen Sharpe, Max Goodwin, Georgia Goodwin Additional Tags: Polyamory Negotiations Summary:
It’s a romantic whirlwind of words and it absolutely floors Helen, even though she knew this was what he’d say. He’d repeated the same sentiment earlier today (and yesterday, and days before) as they began figuring this whole thing out together, but his intensity never fails to mesmerize her. It clearly does the same for Georgia, and Helen can only imagine that’s why she married him. It’s certainly what made her fall for him— and maybe that’s exactly it, perhaps that’s why Georgia is so unsurprised: Max is a very easy person to fall in love with.
Came up with the idea an ot3 including Max, Georgia AND Helen while watching New Amsterdam months ago and couldn't get the idea to leave my head. I adore Sharpwin but the love between Max and Georgia is undeniable, too, so how great would it be if the writers made them all poly instead of creating a love triangle?! Obviously, my hopes aren't high, especially because this an NBC show, but I imagine Max wouldn't want to choose either of them over each other. Hence, this fic was born.
If you enjoyed this and if I converted you to the Sharpwin Squared (???) ship, let me know! Any and all feedback, kudos, and comments is much appreciated! :)
