THE EXISTENCE OF BEA PEARL

Six months ago,Bea Pearl Montgomery saw her brother, Jim, slip into the flooding river of their town, Georgefield, Alabama, just before being knocked unconscious by the wild waters. She remembers seeing someone pull him out to safety, but no one believes her. Bea’s parents have had Jim declared legally dead, and she has been banned from pestering the police department with her theories; even her former cheerleader teammates have decided that “now she’s all weird.” But nothing will stop Bea’s resolve that Jim is still alive. After all, someone has been calling the house and going through Jim’s room, and Bea can’t shake the feeling that the new sheriff, Oakwood, is a little too quick to dismiss her. With the few clues she has, Bea sets off into riverbanks and moody swamps to find the truth, and soon meets Colin, a handsome, mysterious stranger who “gives [her] more shivers than a snow cone in January.” Colin, who sometimes seems to appear by magic, may hold the key to discovering what happened to Jim. Conner creates a lush, fictional version of rivers and Gulf Coast swamps that she clearly knows well; there’s an almost magical realism to the landscape, as if the “water sprites” that Bea imagines might really jump out of the woods, and it lends an intriguing, spooky layer to this teen mystery. Otherwise, though, it’s a bit predictable and rushes through its final revelations instead of building suspense. That said, Bea is a formidable young hero and narrator, and Conner writes her as soulful and determined, and with just the right amount of Southern charm and twang. She’s “the kind of girl who exists between birthday candles and Christmas lights,” as Colin puts it, and readers will enjoy spending time in her head.
