Abstract
"The statistical analysis of the impact of the top 50 X-class solar flares (1997–2024) on global seismic activity as well as on the earthquake preparation zones located in the illuminated part of the globe and in an area of 5000 km around the subsolar point was carried out. It is shown by a method of epoch superposition that for all cases, an increase in seismicity is observed, especially in the region around the subsolar point (up to 33%) during the 10 days after the solar flare in comparison with the preceding 10 days. The case study of the aftershock sequence of a strong Mw = 9.1 earthquake (Sumatra–Andaman Islands, 26 December 2004) after the solar flare of X10.16 class (20 January 2005) demonstrated that the number of aftershocks with a magnitude of Mw ≥ 2.5 increases more than 17 times after the solar flare with a delay of 7–8 days. For the case of the Darfield earthquake (Mw = 7.1, 3 September 2010, New Zealand), it was shown that X-class solar flares and M probably triggered two strong aftershocks (Mw = 6.1 and Mw = 5.9) with the same delay of 6 days on the Port Hills fault, which is the most sensitive to external electromagnetic impact from the point of view of the fault electrical conductivity and orientation. Based on the obtained results, the possible application of natural electromagnetic triggering of earthquakes is discussed for the earthquake forecast using confidently recorded strong external electromagnetic triggering impacts on the specific earthquake preparation zones, as well as ionospheric perturbations due to aerosol emission from the earthquake sources recorded by satellites."

Animalistic trait Sonic headcanons (plant traits in the case of Seedrians like Cosmo). I love it so much, because there’s so much potential, and it allows me to use my brain and my love for science. And I’m going to give some to the characters of my Sonic AU.
For instance, foxes can see magnetic fields. That’s an ability I’m definitely giving to the Prowers, especially because of how many implications it has.
Tails’ parents easily find their way back to him from some after being spirited away Odysseus style because they basically have built in compasses by sensing the geomagnetic field. (Tails’ parents are good, loving parents in my AU. They just decided to give him away on Westside Island to help them all evade Eggman, who wanted the power that Tails and his mom Rosemary, AKA Ayaka Kuzunoha, have as kitsune, in addition to Rosemary being a shinobi.)
Or after they join Sonic in being Tails’ mom, dad, and whole picket fence, Rosemary senses a magnetic field up in Tails’ bedroom late at night, produced by the electricity of the Miles Electric, and tells Sonic that Tails probably is keeping himself up with a project… again. (All electric currents, as moving electric fields, make magnetic fields, and vice versa.)
And then there’s the big one, how Tails and Nine would use it. After Nine heads to Green Hill, it isn’t long before that idea lights up in both of their heads: magnetokinetic power gloves.
Already, the potential is there for slinging metal, or pulling a Gaara with iron shavings instead of sand, but what if I told you that there’s more kinds of magnetism than the one that attracts metal?
The magnetism that attracts certain metals by aligning their atoms is called ferromagnetism. It’s by far the strongest form of magnetism, but there are others.
For example, water and most other “nonmagnetic” nonmetals are diamagnetic, meaning their all-paired-up electrons induce a weak magnetic field when in the presence of a magnet, weakly repelling the object. Meaning strong enough magnets can repel things like water, wood… or a frog.

Not just that, but since electricity and magnetism are two halves of the same fundamental force, just as electric moving in currents make magnetic fields (ex. An electromagnet), moving magnetic fields makes electricity, like in a dynamo, and magnets can also bend charged particles in things like the plasma in lightning via the Lorentz force.
So imagine Tails and Nine sparring against Surge and Kit (who are both fully reformed in my AU. Kit just signed Surge up for a rookie hero’s guild/league instead of setting up trouble for her to stop, and they both took Starline’s glove to undo most of the hypnosis, as well as learn a few skills here and do some impromptu hypnotherapy for the trauma caused by the experiments.)
The Glitch duo think they have Tails and Nine on the ropes, until Nine magnetically stops Kit’s water whips in their tracks and Tails parries Surge’s lightning bolts, deflecting them with the Lorentz force. And now, the fight is back on!

Swarm detects ocean tides' magnetic signatures
A study using data from ESA's Swarm mission suggests that faint magnetic signatures created by Earth's tides can help us determine magma distribution under the seabed and could even give us insights into long-term trends in global ocean temperatures and salinity.
Swarm is a constellation of three satellites that study Earth's geomagnetic field. This magnetic field that extends from Earth's interior into space is thought to be produced largely by an ocean of liquid iron in the planet's outer core. Other sources of magnetism include magnetized rocks in the crust.
And although we might not normally think of oceans as generating magnetism, the salty sea water is a moderate electrical conductor. This means that as tides flow across Earth's magnetic field, they generate weak electric currents, which in turn induce small magnetic signals that can be detected from space.
With its satellites flying at an altitude between 462 km and 511 km, Swarm measures Earth's magnetic field more accurately than ever before. It can detect faint tidal signatures and distinguish them from other stronger magnetic field sources from Earth's interior.
"This study shows that Swarm can provide data on properties of the entire water column of our oceans." says Anja Strømme, ESA's Swarm Mission Manager.
Swarm's data can also provide insights into the distribution of magma, which could in future support better understanding of events such as the Hunga-Tonga volcanic eruption of 2022.
The study of these signatures made the front cover of the world's oldest scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, and was conducted by a team from the University of Cologne and the Technical University of Denmark.
Swarm gets better with age
The mission, launched in 2013, was only meant to fly for four years but is now in its 12th year. Anja adds, "This is one of the benefits of flying missions for longer than originally planned. So, by flying as long as the scientific output is of excellent quality and resources allow, you can tackle scientific questions that weren't originally envisaged."
Swarm is, however, slowly nearing the natural end of its lifespan as drag gradually brings the satellites physically closer to Earth. This has enabled the mission's instruments—the satellites carry state-of-the-art sensors including magnetometers that measure the strength, magnitude and direction of the magnetic field—to capture faint signals that would be more difficult to detect from the higher orbits at the start of the mission.
Less solar interference
Swarm's ability to detect the faint ocean signals was also helped by the sun's less active period around 2017. "These are among the smallest signals detected by the Swarm mission so far," says lead author Alexander Grayver, of the University of Cologne.
"The data are particularly good because they were gathered during a period of solar minimum, when there was less noise due to space weather."
The "minimum" period of the sun's 11-year solar cycle is when the sun's surface is least active. During this "quiet" period, it emits less solar matter—including electromagnetic radiation and charged particles—so "space weather" phenomena such as the Northern Lights are less frequent. And with less electromagnetic radiation from the sun, the geomagnetic signals from Earth are more easily detectable by Swarm's magnetometers and other instruments.
The hope is that, when the next solar minimum comes around after 2030, Swarm might still be flying—albeit at a lower altitude—and will be able to continue detecting the faint signals that can help us understand more about the temperatures and salinity deep within our oceans.

Benefits of our cause!
Reduced risk of solar flares: In 1859, a massive solar flare and geomagnetic storm hit the Earth. Magnetic storms induce electric currents in wires. Unfortunately for us, by 1859 we had wrapped the Earth in telegraph wires. The storm caused powerful currents in those wires, knocking out communications and in some cases causing telegraph equipment to catch fire.
Since 1859, we've wrapped the Earth in a lot more wires. If the Sun went out, this threat would be eliminated.
Improved satellite service: When a communications satellite passes in front of the Sun, the Sun can drown out the satellite's radio signal, causing an interruption in service. Deactivating the Sun would solve this problem.
Better astronomy: Without the Sun, ground-based observatories would be able to operate around the clock. The cooler air would create less atmospheric noise, which would reduce the load on adaptive optics systems and allow for sharper images.
Stable dust: Without sunlight, there would be no Poynting–Robertson drag, which means we would finally be able to place dust into a stable orbit around the Sun without the orbits decaying. I’m not sure whether anyone wants to do that, but you never know.
Cheaper trade: Time zones make trade more expensive; it's harder to do business with someone if their office hours don't overlap with yours. If the Sun went out, it would eliminate the need for time zones, allowing us all to switch to UTC and give a boost to the global economy. Wouldn't it be great if you could be on the same sleep cycle as all of your online friends?
Safer Children: According to the North Unova Department of Health, babies younger than six months should be kept out of direct sunlight. Without sunlight, our children would be safer.
Safer cargo pilots: Many people sneeze when exposed to bright sunlight. The reasons for this reflex are unknown, and it may pose a danger to pilots during flight. If the Sun went dark, it would mitigate this danger to our pilots.
Safer parsnip: Wild parsnip is a surprisingly nasty plant. Its leaves contain chemicals called furocoumarins, which can be absorbed by human skin without causing symptoms ... at first. However, when the skin is then exposed to sunlight (even days or weeks later), the furocoumarins cause a nasty chemical burn. This is called phytophotodermatitis. A darkened Sun would liberate us from the parsnip threat.
In conclusion, if the Sun went out, we would see a variety of benefits across many areas of our lives! Consider joining today! Fuck the sun!

Satellites detect ocean tides' magnetic signatures
A study using data from ESA's Swarm mission suggests that faint magnetic signatures created by Earth's tides can help us determine magma distribution under the seabed and could even give us insights into long-term trends in global ocean temperatures and salinity.
Swarm is a constellation of three satellites that study Earth's geomagnetic field. This magnetic field that extends from Earth's interior into space is thought to be produced largely by an ocean of liquid iron in the planet's outer core. Other sources of magnetism include magnetized rocks in the crust.

(The tidal flows of Earth’s salty seawater across Earth’s magnetic field lines generate electric currents within the ocean. These in turn induce secondary magnetic fields that form part of the planet’s complex magnetic field signal that can be detected from space. ESA’s Swarm satellites can measure these tiny oceanic magnetic fields and distinguish them from other magnetic fields such as those from the core, ionosphere, magnetosphere and magnetized crust. 7 Most Powerful Solar Storms in the History of Earth
In May 2024, we witnessed the biggest solar storm of the past 20 years. Many people uploaded their POV of the aurora on social media. However, while the aurora borealis is a beautiful sight, the effects of the solar storms were drastic. Solar Storms (Geo Magnetic Storms) are the motion of accelerated charged particles in the solar environment with high velocities due to the coronal mass ejection (CME). Moving toward Earth at the speed of 3 million miles per hour, these storms can impact us humans significantly. Let’s explore how.
Impact of Solar Storms on the Earth:
As the storms reach the outer atmosphere or space, they might collide with Satellites or humans in space. The energetic protons in the storm could cause alteration or damage to electrical circuits or the biological DNA. At the most extreme solar storm, the passengers and crew of high-flying aircraft could be exposed to radiation risk. Storms could create intense currents in Earth’s magnetosphere and cause the ionosphere and upper thermosphere to heat up. This could create a drag for low-orbiting satellites and harm the power grid. When a solar storm reaches Earth, it interacts with the magnetosphere making it agitated and compressed, which allows energetic solar wind particles to cluster in Polar Regions.
Very High-energy particles, like those carried by coronal mass ejections, can cause radiation poisoning to humans and mammals. When a coronal mass ejection strikes Earth’s atmosphere it causes a temporary disturbance of the Earth’s magnetic field. Solar storms can throw satellites off course and cause them to fall on Earth’s surface putting many urban centers at risk. Many migrating animals like birds and honey bees are affected by solar storms as they use magneto reception to navigate. Geo-magnetically induced currents are produced in the pipelines due to rapidly fluctuating geomagnetic fields causing multiple problems for the pipeline engineers. Pipeline flow meters can pass wrong information and the corrosion rate of the pipelines can be dramatically increased.

There are 5 types of solar flares. Here they are ranked from least to most effective:
A-Class flares – These flares don’t have any noticeable consequences on Earth.
B-Class flares – These are 10 times more intense than A-Class flares.
C-Class flares – These are 10 times stronger than B-Class flares. They have few noticeable consequences on Earth.
M-Class flares – These are medium-sized flares. They cause brief radio blackouts that affect Polar Regions.
X-Class flares – These are the biggest. They cause radio blackouts throughout the world. They also cause long-lasting radiation storms in the upper atmosphere.

1. The Carrington Effect: 1859
It was named the Carrington effect because it was observed by the solar astronomer Richard Carrington. He witnessed the storm through his private observatory telescope and sketched the sun’s sunspots at the time. It is the first and largest documented solar flare. It caused major aurora displays visible to the south as far as the Caribbean. It also caused severe disruptions in global telegraph communications, shocked some telegraph operators, and caused fires due to the discharge from lines ignited telegraph papers.
2. Solar Flare VS. AT&T: 1972
This is a major solar flare that erupted in August 1972. It knocked out long-distance telephone communication across many states including Illinois. NASA stated that this event caused AT&T to redesign its power system for transatlantic cables.
3. Major Power Failures from Geomagnetic Storm: 1989

In March 1989, a powerful solar flare caused a geomagnetic storm that set off a major power blackout in Canada, forcing 6 Million people to spend 9 hours without electricity. Although the flare was pretty strong, it was not nearly the same scale as the Carrington event.

Bastille Day event has the same name as the French national holiday because it occurred on the same day i.e. July 14, 2000. The event caused some satellites to short-circuit resulting in Radio blackouts.
5. The Haunting Halloween Storms: 2003
From October till November, the Earth experienced continuous solar flares and coronal mass ejections in its atmosphere. NASA named it The Haunting Halloween Storms. The storms caused airplanes to be rerouted, affected satellite systems, and caused power shortages in Sweden. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) failed due to the solar storm which studies the Sun, its deep core to its outer corona, and solar wind.
6. X-Ray Sun Flare for Xmas: 2006
On Dec 5, a massive X-Class flare was seen ignited on the sun. The solar storm was so powerful that it damaged the solar X-ray imager instrument on the GOES 13 satellite which took its picture.
7. A Very Expensive Storm: 2022
In February of 2022, the launch of 40 Starlink satellites was carried out but all the satellites got burned in the environment. The solar storm caused the thermosphere to get denser and eventually Starlink satellites couldn’t pull the satellites upward to their designated position. The satellites got pulled towards Earth and ultimately burned by the friction in the atmosphere, totaling a loss of 50 million.
Should we be worried?
While we are physically safe from solar storms, the economic damage can be drastic. Today, space agencies are trying to send astronauts on interplanetary missions. If we want to establish an interplanetary residence, we must learn how to protect ourselves from Solar Storms.
On the other hand, scientists are trying to develop radiation-resistant space suits for astronauts to protect them from radiation. Humans are trying to get to Ceres and Mars for exploration. In the long term, precautionary measures are necessary to prevent any damage from the storms.
