WATERPARKS
THESE POP-PUNK UPSTARTS HAVE CATCHY SONGS, AN ENDORSEMENT FROM THE MADDENS AND AN UNIRONIC LOVE FOR HAIR DYE AND FUNKY-COLORED JELL-O. THEY ALSO HAVE A LOT TO PROVE-AND THEY'RE READY TO GET TO WORK.
STORY: EVAN LUCY x PHOTOS: JONATHAN WEINER
Awsten Knight knows what you're thinking: This time last year, his band, Waterparks, were veritable nobodies. You'd probably not heard their two EPs (2012's Airplane Conversations and 2014's Black Light), and the band's SEO was likely so suspect, there's no way a Google search would place the Houston-based trio above their hometown Wet 'n' Wild.
What a difference a trip around the sun. makes. Since late last year, the group scored a record deal with Equal Vision, picked up Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden as their managers, performed at the 2016 APMAS and even graced the cover of AP's Warped Tour issue-all before releasing their first album. Along the way, they've cultivated a passionate (and ever-growing) fanbase, thanks to an irreverent sense of humor, insatiable work ethic and saccharine-sweet pop-rock sound. But as their star has grown, so have the rumors and confusion about just how they ended up on a collision course with success.
"I saw somebody online say, 'Isn't this that industry-plant band? Like we were made by a label or something." Knight remarks from Los Angeles, where he and his bandmates are putting the finishing touches on bonus tracks for their debut full-length, Double Dare, and filming a video for the album's first single, "Stupid For You." "People are always like, "Where'd this band come from? This band blew up overnight! That's really not the case."
Indeed, it's been a grind for Waterparks, who formed back in 2011 and, after years of hustle and hard work, got signed last year after a demo serendipitously ended up in Equal Vision's online submission box. Even today, as Waterparks—Knight, guitarist/vocalist Geoff Wigington and drummer Otto Wood-seem to have an indefinite amount of momentum and a limitless future, there's always some humbling experience to remind them the big time is still a few steps away. Look no further than their method of transportation for this summer's Warped Tour: a modified Sprinter van handily equipped with sleeping quarters- but no air conditioning.
"The van didn't have A/C until we got to the North, Knight remembers. "We did Texas and Florida, the whole South, with no A/C. People thought we were in a bus. It'd be like, 'Oh yeah, when you guys go back to your bus…" He laughs. "How can you be egotistical when you're sitting there in a sweaty van going, 'Fucking kill me?'"
Lifestyles of the rich and famous it isn't, but that's fine with Waterparks. They're used to surprising people, whether it's with their origin story or their music. A testament to both their artistic vision and desire not to be pigeonholed as just another pop-punk band, Double Dare sounds like an album made by three men raised in iPod shuffle culture. The album opener "Hawaii (Stay Awake)" skews toward more standard pop-punk fare (a sound that definitely provides a backbone for the 12 tracks that follow), but the band are quick to add bits of pop, electronica and (surprisingly) hip- hop to the melting pot, leaving Double Dare feeling instantly reminiscent, yet wildly unpredictable. There's the unabashed pop charm of "Take Her To The Moon," a DeLorean ride back to the scene's neon days that's awash in glassy synths; the biting "Little Violence," which takes aim at "fake-ass band guys," along with the now-defunct site AbsolutePunk; "Stupid For You," a roller coaster of vocal runs mixed with razor-sharp hooks; and the jittery "Dizzy," which combines mile-a-minute rapped verses with a towering half-time chorus.
Knight, a textbook over-writer, wrote and demoed more than 40 songs for the album, which the group whittled down to the 17 or so they actually tracked in Los Angeles with producers Courtney Ballard and Benji Madden. What makes Double Dare such an engaging listen is not just the songwriting, but the way Waterparks dress it up. Throughout the album, Knight's voice serves almost as a third guitar, cutting in and out and swirling around the mix to give things added depth and a secret sonic weapon their peers lack.
"Listen to Kesha," Knight implores. "People have heard a lead guitar a billion times-no one gives a shit about a sick guitar lead. What's going to sound sonically cooler to the average human: a lead guitar- which people have been hearing for the longest time- or the literally unlimited sounds I can cut my voice up into and make it [serve the same purpose]? It just sounds cooler."
As a teenager, Knight studied raps by the likes of Busta Rhymes and Ludacris (he even performed a cover of Fergie's "Fergalicious" at an early show), and he thinks it would be "sweet" to be in a boy band. "You have to stand out, otherwise there's nothing interesting about what you're doing," he explains. "We've always tried to do different shit. A lot of our songs are a pop-driven thing, but it's a band. Girl-pop, to me, is the best genre [in music]. Even if you don't speak English and you hear a Kesha song or a Katy Perry song, it's going to sound so good. The melody is everything: It sounds so happy. Put those songs next to whatever progressive metal band and their fucking guitar sweeps. That's the difference between being a band people like and being a musician's band. [Adopts nerdy voice] 'Oh, that time signature change, blah blah! No one gives a shit except nerdy dudes, and nerdy dudes aren't going to buy your record, anyway. I want to make shit my little sister and her friends would be into."
If Knight is that unabashedly honest about his musical intentions, the words he writes take it a step further. At its core, Double Dare is the antithesis to the public image Waterparks have cultivated over the years. From their irreverent music videos to any number of off- the-rails interviews (including some from this summer's Warped Tour where Knight donned a wedding veil), the band's public persona is that of perpetual Peter Pans. While that might be true (Knight frequently drops words like "butthurt" in conversation), the open-book nature of his lyrics here reveals life isn't all fun and feces jokes.
As such, the songs on Double Dare read like pages ripped from a personal journal. Whether he's dealing with crippling insecurity ("I wish I was as brave as my last name"), self-doubt ("And I'm doing all right/ But is 'all right' enough?/Because I'm living my dreams, but I live at home") or true love ("If you died, I'd hope you'd haunt me"), Knight's words are blunt, painstakingly detailed and instantly relatable. He might project as a court jester, but he's deadly serious about his art.
"There's a time when Awsten can be serious, and that's when he's talking about his music, Benji Madden offers. "In order to sell records or magazines, people feel like they have to be sensational or play a funny game. If you talk to Awsten about anything other than music, you'll get totally jokey, bullshit answers-which I love. But if you talk to him about music, he's a really smart, intentional, thoughtful guy."
"Being honest about it is the best way to go about it," Knight says of his songs. "I've never liked the vague lyrics, like, [jokingly sings] "I've gotta find my way. I've gotta get out of this place! All my favorite lyricists are killer with metaphors or are able to uniquely describe things. I like getting into things and being specific." He references the acoustic ballad "21 Questions," easily one of the album's highlights, but a song slated for the cutting-room floor until Madden stepped in. ("I feel like that song could be one of those scene classics," the Good Charlotte guitarist offers.) It's hard to imagine the album without it.
Outside of being a steady hand in the studio, the Maddens are the perfect mentors for Knight, Wigington and Wood. After all, it was 15 years ago that Good Charlotte went through everything Waterparks are currently navigating, claims of being a test-tube band and all. They've learned everything is cyclical, and they're passing on the lessons they learned to the bands they manage.
"They're so wise," Wigington explains in a separate interview. "You shut up and listen. They've told us, 'Hey, things are going to start getting weird. There will be things you haven't been used to, especially if you're out on the road! But they've told us to look out for each other and have each other's back and helped instill a sense of camaraderie so we can deal with whatever weird shit comes our way."
If their current career trajectory continues, things will be getting weirder and weirder in the Waterparks camp soon. The band have secured the opening spot on Sleeping With Sirens' fall tour, and they're already making plans well into 2017. With a new album ready and the furthest reaches of the scene at their fingertips, it seems like there's really no limit to how big this thing can get. It's already surpassed their wildest dreams in the past year; imagine what one more could bring. Not that it would change their demeanor, of course.
"I'd like to be able to live comfortably to the point where I could ride a bike into a swimming pool filled with Jell-O and have it not be a big deal," Knight says unflinchingly, when asked what success would look like for him. "I was thinking blue or purple because I like cooler colors. Red seems messy. Not yellow or orange, because I don't like those flavors as much. I used to be allergic to blue dye when I was younger, so I'd probably pick that just so I could be like, 'Fuck you." alt

Lazy Mornings
Geoff Wigington X GN!Reader
Word Count: 1k
Summary: basically what the title says, Geoff and you spend a lazy morning together. Plotless and self indulgent fluff only
Tumblr media
The thing that woke me up today were soft little pressure points on my shoulder and neck. In my sleep dazed state, it took me a minute to recognise them as kisses but as soon as I did, I relaxed even more into the pillows and the touches.
Geoff was pressing also kisses all over my neck, shoulder and cheek. A smile made its way on my lips and I squeezed his arm that was thrown over my torso.
"You're awake," he mumbled, his voice raspy and thick with sleep. It sent a shiver down my spine that promised something more.
But not now, this was far better right at the moment. I hummed in response. "Wasn't that your goal?"
"Partly," Geoff admitted and went back to kissing me and caressing my side softly, "but I also really like to kiss you."
"Sap," I breathed a laugh and collected enough strength to roll around.
Now we were facing each other, terrible bed hair and soft features. The most beautiful Geoff had ever been in my opinion. It was something so intimate to see him like that, barely awake and smiling, all for me and me only.
"Morning baby," I said and arched my back until I could press a closed mouth kiss to his lips. Morning breath was a thing and I could live without it for a little while longer.
Geoff smiled into the kiss, his hands coming up to cup my face gently. They were warm and dry on my skin and I bathed in the soft touches, my eyes falling closed again.
After just a moment, I pulled away and instead rested my head on top of his chest. Geoff moved his hands from my face down my back and held mw around the waist. My own hands were on his chest where I could simultaneously feel and hear his slow heartbeat underneath my fingers and ear. I sighed happily.
"Can we stay like this forever?"
"As long as you want to, Love," Geoff promised and put his left hand on the back of my head.
Then, he started to play with my hair, wrapping it around his finger or simply scraping my scalp. I felt like a cat lying in the sun with his warm body underneath me and his large hands caressing my body and head. My nightshirt had gotten pulled up a little during my moving around so now his right hand came in contact with that sliver of naked skin. Geoff drew his hand right under my shirt and moved it up in circles until he reached my shoulder blades. I was purring by now.
And then, my bladder felt left out. Out of nowhere, it started to feel like an elephant was lying on it, making it impossible to ignore. I grumbled and raised myself on my elbows. Understandingly, Geoff was confused and tried to pull me back down. "Where're you goin' babe?"
"Bathroom," I gave the short answer and weaseled my way out of his warm embrace, immediately freezing in the cold air of our bedroom. I swore, Awsten had turned the heat down last time he was here. That guy liked to do the most random stuff and I was more than ready to kill him for it right now.
Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, I figured that I could as well brush my teeth when I was here already so I started my usual morning routine. While I was preoccupied with a mouth full of toothpaste, I heard some rustling around in the apartment.
Geoff must have gotten up as well. Probably went to the kitchen to start the coffee machine. It was a wonder that he had lasted so long without it. While I was still thinking that, the bathroom door opened and my boyfriend wrapped his arms around me from behind. I could see him smile at me in the mirror as he placed his head on my shoulder. Due to our height difference, he had to crouch down to reach me so I rose to my tip toes in hopes to help him keep the back pain at a minimum.
"So we're getting up now?" Geoff asked and reached for his own toothbrush at the same time.
I nodded and spit into the sink. "Figured it makes sense. We got plans for today?"
Geoff shook his head. He tried to say something but realised too late that he had a mouthful of toothbrush and toothpaste so it just came out as incoherent mumbling. One finger raised, he symbolised that he wasn't finished so I waited with light amusement.
"Nope," Geoff said as soon as his mouth was empty, "today's only us two. We can stay in bed the entire day or go outside or watch movies until our eyes fall out."
"That sounds like a fantastic day," I stated.
With Geoff on my heels, I went into the kitchen and started to prepare myself a bowl of cereal while Geoff was coaxing a cup of coffee out of the ancient machine. It was making some concerning noises but in the end, my boyfriend had his coffee and sat down opposite of me with a satisfied smile.
"So what option are you taking Y/N?" Geoff wanted to know, preparing himself his own bowl.
I didn't need to think twice. "Movie marathon and cuddling."
Geoff laughed at the speed with which I answered and nodded approvingly. "Knew that you'd say that. Are you up for some Marvel?"
"The new Spiderman?"
"Absolutely, let's go."
With the bowls and cups in hand, we made our way to the living room, me almost spilling both of it which got me some teasing on my balance. I raised my head up and ignored Geoff gracefully.
It lasted for about two seconds as he pressed himself into my side and coaxed my head into the crook of his neck. Of course, I melted into his embrace and let him push us back until we were leaning against the cushions. Geoff reached for the remote and put on the movie, his hands never once leaving me.
The day proceeded to be filled with lazy making out, joking around and minimal attention on the assorted movie playing. We were much more distracted by each other, Geoff's eyes and hands keeping me occupied.

Beach proposal.
Summary: Awsten Knight and his girlfriend, (y/n), are hanging out in Portsmouth before the show and he has a very important question to ask.
I also just hit 100 followers so keep an eye out for a special fanfic post :)
Warnings: Kissing?, swearing
Word count: 1.4K

“Portsmouth is so great!” Awsten says, a smile almost permanently on his face. “Why haven’t you brought me here before?” He says squeezing my hand looking out across the river.
“Because there’s much better places to go.” I say with a smile.
“How much better can it get than this?” He says in an awe-struck sort of way.
“Much, believe me.” I kick a pebble into the river and I see a swan. “Look, a swan I say with a small grin.
“Oh my god.” He says coming to a halt. He walks towards it and the swan starts hissing.
“Awsten, it’s hissing at you.” I cover my mouth to stop my self laughing as I watch my boyfriend approaching a hissing swan. “Aws, it’ll bite you.” I warn him trying not to laugh.
“Can I feed it?” He asks trying to stroke the swan.
“Feed it what?” I ask rubbing my face.
“I mean we just went bought some sandwiches, can swans have sandwiches?” I shrug.
“You’re not feeding it my sandwich.” I say crossing my arms.
“No, no, pass me mine.” I dig through my bag and pull out a plain cheese sandwich.
“Here.” I say and pass him his boring sandwich.
He opens it and starts trying to offer it to the swan but it looks like he’s taunting the swan. I shake my head as he tentatively places the bred in front of the swan.
“Love, save some of your sandwich.” I say as he feeds the swan like half of it.
“Fine.” He stand up and I take the sandwich off of him with a laugh. “Wait, lemme get a video first.”
“You’d think that they didn’t have swans in America.” I say mostly to myself. “Whilst your videoing the swan I’m going to get myself an ice cream.” I lure him away from the swan with the idea of ice cream. “Let’s go get ice cream!” I say excitedly as he re-joins me leaving the swan alone.
“Okay, whatever m’lady wants.” He says in a fake British accent.
“That was not a British accent.” He frowns jokingly. “But quite attractive.”
He smirks and grabs my hand again. “I’ll have to bear that in mind then.”
We buy ice cream and sit on a wall.
“C’mon let’s go to the beach.” He says dragging me along. Surprisingly the weather is warm, abnormal for the UK.
“Okay.” I look at one of the signs saying nude beach with an arrow. “Let’s go this way.” I say diverting us away from the nude beach.
“What? You don’t wanna go to the nude beach?” He says mockingly. “I think it’ll be fun.” He says but I pull him back the right way.
We make it to the not-nude beach and sit down by the sea. Not too close to the water.
“I can’t believe that you bought a plain cheese sandwich and then a vanilla ice cream. You're so boring!” I say licking my strawberry ice cream.
“Damn, okay then.” He rolls his eyes jokingly.
We finish our ice creams and Awsten pulls me up from the sand and drags me towards the sea. I’m wearing shorts but Awsten’s wearing trousers so he rolls them up. I kick off my shoes as we run into the sea. He kicks some water at me and laughs as I pout.
The water only reaches our lower legs as we face each other holding hands giggling like teenagers.
“I love you.” He says rubbing his nose against mine making me laugh.
“I love you too.” I say copying his actions.
He steps back away from me and kneels on one knee in the water.
“Aws, what are you doing, you're going to get wet!” I joke, confused.
He pulls out a small box from his hoodie and my face drops releasing what he might be doing.
“(y/n) (m/n) (l/n), I love you more than anything in the world, I would give you the world if you could and I want to spend the rest of my life trying to. I want to spend the rest of my life with you as my wife. Six years of dating you has finally made me realise what I want my life to look like.” He pauses and my hands fly to my mouth as I watch him open the ring box. “I want to write cheesy songs about you, I want to experience the good and bad of life with you. I want us to share our good and bad. I’ve spoken to your parents, I’ve got there blessing to ask you this question. (y/n), will you marry me?” He says with a nervous smile.
“Yes! Yes, of course I will!” He slides the ring on my finger and jumps up splashing water everywhere. I place my hands on his face and kiss him passionately as he matches the emotion. Our lips slide against each other and I can taste the salt from the sea on his lips. I thread my fingers through his red, faded hair deepening the kiss as he places his hands on the back of my neck.
We break form the kiss and we look into each other eyes, only love is reflected between our eyes. Love and large smiles.
I quickly pull him into a hug and he reciprocates wrapping his arms around my shoulders.
“I love you, future Mrs Knight.” He says and I chuckle.
“I love you too, my fiance.” I say, my head settling in the crook of his neck.
Suddenly I hear clapping coming from the beach, I turn around to look at the beach and I see everyone.
It’s some strangers, they must’ve seen the successful proposal. We wade back to the beach and a chorus of congratulations comes from the kind strangers.
“Thank you.” I reply politely a smile etched into my face.
The crowd of people dissipates and we head back away from the beach.
“What do you want to do now?” He says with his damp trousers.
“Ice cream.” I say even though we’ve had it already.
“Okay.” He chuckles and we hurry to the store not wanting it to close before we get there.
We eat the ice cream and head back, I have a shower whilst Aws tells the guys the good news. The show’s not too long now, I think the first support act are on right now so still an hour or two. I get out of the shower and the guys are gone, I wrap a towel around me and see a note on the table.
“Show starts soon, getting ready. Come down when you’re ready. Awsten x.” I smile seeing the note and hurry down once I’m dressed and ready.
I hang out in the dressing room with them until they have to go on. I’m sure it annoyed the stylist me being there because me and Awsten were inseparable.
An hour or so later they go on stage. Aws kisses me on the head before running onto stage. I watch the show and sigh, then laugh when he starts talking about the swan we met earlier. He runs off stage and grabs his phone to show the video.
“There was a nudist neach not far from there.” He says recounting the day giggling as he goes. “Me and my girlfriend, (y/n), you guys know her right?” The crowd cheers. “Yeah, we had ice cream after seeing the swan, yeah, then we went to this beach, not the nudist beach. And you know what I did?” He asks and the crowd are oblivious. “Wait, (y/n)! Come out here and tell everyone what happened!” He yells off stage and I shuffle out of the wings onto the stage. The fans cheer as I walk on. “(y/n), would you mind telling the fans what I did earlier?” He passes me the microphone.
“He proposed.” I say and lift up my hand showing off my ring.
The crowd goes completely crazy as I show everyone the ring. I kiss him on the cheek before ruffling his hair and running off stage again.
“Did you guys here that?” He says eagerly. “I proposed to my girlfriend of six years. Shit, I proposed!” He says, a massive smile on his face. “I’m getting married!” The crowd is still going crazy. “You guys better be waiting for a song about that!” He jokes enjoying himself. “Love you (y/n)!” He shouts off stage.
“Yeah, you better!”
-
AN: Fun fact, I was actually at this show, it was like a month ago and it was amazing.
He said about the ice cream and the swan during the show so this is all authentic, except for the proposal part.
Thank you, my 100 followers!

TW// GORE and LOTS OF IT (April 2021) Sup fellow parx artists. Can I join your round table? Cool. *slaps down this mess*. SO I've been a Waterparks fan for a while, and recently realized that I haven't really drawn/posted any Parx fanart, except for this one drawing of scenie weenie Awsten. So I needed an idea for some parx fanart. At that same time, I was tryna figure out some more names that can replace "Dawn" in the popular zombie related things title "Dawn of the Dead". So I thought of "Jawn", and then I thought of Jawn Rocha, and then I put two and two together and BAM. I call this "Jawn of the Dead"

hey so I wrote nine fics and posted them all at once because fuck yeah so here they are
a snowy shade of winter (Lemonade verse) / Cody Carson/Awsten Knight/Patty Walters // A heavy snow causes classes to be cancelled for the day. Patty takes his boyfriends out for a walk.
happy new year, love / Bonnie Fraser/Hannah Mee // The final countdown to the new year is about to start. Hannah's right where she wants to be: in the arms of her girlfriend.
quicksand (witchy parx verse) / Awsten Knight/Geoff Wigington/Otto Wood // Geoff, Awsten, and Otto find themselves in a strange new world: a place with more technology than magic, and where the three of them are in a music band together.
five in the bed and the little one said / Patrick Foley/Ronnie Ish/Ben Langford-Biss/Alistair Testo/Patty Walters // “This isn’t going to work,” Patty says.
Roses by the Stairs / Geoff Wigington/Otto Wood // Five times Geoff kissed Otto and one time he didn’t.
a shape that’s not the same / Bonnie Fraser/Hannah Mee // Summer is a time for swimming. Even better when you get a chance to do it with your long-distance girlfriend.
just my miniature fire extinguisher / Ben Langford-Biss/Patty Walters // Ben is so tired and busy that he doesn't notice he's dropped something on the sidewalk. A stranger notices, however.
X / Awsten Knight/Jawn Rocha // Awsten believes in the paranormal. Jawn does not. Welcome to their YouTube channel.
when I do what I love, I find myself looking back again / Cody Carson/Dan Clermont/Maxx Danziger/Zach DeWall // Maxx is tired and he's just trying to get some rest. Touring in a band is a lot more work than he imagined when he first wished for this life. Sheer exhaustion puts him to sleep as they're driving along darkened highways after the show. And then... CRUNCH!

“don’t say that.”
yeah um. today sucked. this is major projection, based off a couple things i read on @bisexualgawsten (i made a post with screenshots if you want to see it. it’s the last thing i posted. but anyway yall should follow them if you don't lmao i have their notifs on bc i check their blog too many times a day to be considered healthy)
but yeah heavy depression and anxiety trigger warnings i'm sorry
Geoff's been gone for over three hours.
He said he'd be back in two. He said he was just going out with some old friends for dinner and he wouldn't be gone long. Have a couple beers, catch up, he'd be back before Awsten knew it- And Awsten swallowed hard at that part. He remembers how thick the saliva felt in his throat, sticky, clinging onto his windpipe as it slid downward and made a bed for the nausea to lay on.
He knows Geoff drinks. He's seen him drunk too many times to count. Even before they started dating, whenever they'd go out to parties or end up at the occasional bar, Geoff would get caught up in all the action and pressured into taking more shots than he planned to and end up completely inebriated. It's not new. It's not different. He's done it so many times before and everything's been fine.
It feels different tonight.
Tonight, there's a blurry fog over him, a permanent fixture of shower steam over his eyes. It's the kind of shower that doesn't feel cleansing. It's traveling in swirls up his back and each one peels back a layer from his chest, one by one until the only thing that's separating the wrecking ball from slamming into his heart are his ribs, shaking in his chest cavity as they try to hold themselves up.
The pain is a paintball that's long splattered. It coats the wall of his skull thickly, dripping down in a constant flow, like droplets collecting on the edges of a water bottle. There's always something there when the bottle is turned upside down, always one more droplet to fall and sink and absorb into his body to sprout a new pain plant.
Tonight makes every other bad night this week seem like heaven.
Tonight he thinks about everything, thinks back to the aching eyes and tearstained cheeks and crack that had formed in his heart, how it got bigger and bigger as more pain funneled in, filled it up until he felt like he was bursting. The ache was so big, it was so much – he didn't think it was possible for one human being, one body to hurt like this. Tonight he thinks about staring straight ahead, about the home he made amongst the tangled sheets and rumpled covers and damp pillowcases, about looking at the wall but not really seeing it. It was like the worst x-ray vision ever, being able to see through and inside and imagine, look through his life through that shower steam filter, like he was floating while everything else zoomed past.
Tonight he thinks about Geoff and how he's finally out of the house, out with his friends, out with people who don't have devastation and disappointment and depression. Tonight he's Geoff Wigington, who laughs obnoxiously at stupid jokes and drinks beer and lets no traces of it's gonna be okay, love. I'm here for you spill from his mouth. Tonight he's Geoff Wigington who doesn't have a useless sack of flesh waiting for him at home, Geoff Wigington who gets to be Geoff Wigington, gets to take a break from Awsten's Caretaker, for a night.
He knows Geoff is tired of it. He has to be. It's gotten particularly bad in the past few months. The experts say at least one depressive episode constitutes major depressive disorder. He's had two in the past month. Weeks straight of not being able to drag himself out of bed, not being able to get his ass up and go on any of the cute dates Geoff had planned, fly to LA to record songs, start working on ideas for the new music video...weeks straight of not being able to do anything except lay there and let the hornets drill into his bones until he was nothing but hollow, let them pierce his skin and settle themselves among the holes they've made. He was defenseless and he was invaded and they've spread like a disease.
It's been three hours and Geoff isn't back yet and his phone has lost ten percent battery in almost that amount of minutes from how many times he's checked it. It's been three hours and he doesn't know what's going on because Geoff is the type of person that texts him all the time, especially when he's like this. He can't lie back and stare at the wall unless he throws his phone on the floor because it's constantly lighting up with messages, 'I love yours' or cute selfies or teases of a surprise (usually food) Geoff's bringing home that night. Geoff's a great texter.
It's been three hours and Geoff isn't back yet and his phone has lost ten percent battery from how many times he's checked it.
What if he's gone-
"Stop." The word feels like knives cutting up his throat. He hasn't used his voice all day, feels like.
What if he left you-
"S-Shut up."
What if he finally had enough of your shit what if he's gone what if he left you what if he's done for good what if he's gone forever what if you were too much for him what if you were too much for him what if you were too fucking much for him-
"N-No!" He sits up with a start. The breaths are coming fast. Too fast. He can't keep up. They happen in quick succession. He presses the heels of his hands into the mattress and gasps his way through the series of pants.
He's gone he left you he had enough that's why he hasn't called that's why he hasn't texted that's why he isn't back yet he's gone he left you he's had enough you're too much for him too much too much too fucking much you drive everyone away you don't let anyone love you what the fuck is wrong with you why can't you let someone love you why do you have to be such a depressed piece of shit all the time-
He flops back down to the bed and turns his face into the pillows as the tears really start. They soak warmly against the fabric and move, slimy, against his face. He can't stop shaking. The room is spinning around him. It's the worst roller coaster ever and he wants to get off.
He bites his lip and tries to hold a sob back. It balls up at the exit of his mouth, sends out sparks and flames and ignites his entire body. He has no choice but to let it slip.
He wants Geoff. He needs Geoff. He needs the arms around his torso and the chest to bury his head into, the hands rubbing at his back and kisses against his temple. He needs Geoff's fingers buried in his hair, the rubs at his scalp that – on some days – are the only reason he gets to sleep, the scent that wraps around him, tendrils warming up every part of his body on the numb days. He needs Geoff he needs Geoff he needs Geoff-
He knows why. He gets it. He understands. Being with someone like him is like having a burden instead of a boyfriend. He's sad all the time and writes too many depressing lyrics and gets angry a lot and overreacts to everything; he never wants to leave the house and hates being social and gets anxious in the places there is absolutely nothing to be anxious about. Being with him is like dating the largest case file in the world. He's a sack of flesh with too many problems and a head that won't shut up and it annoys even him most days.
He doesn't blame Geoff.
He wouldn't want to be with him either.
...
He curses loudly as he drops his key, scrambles to grab it and press it into the lock once more.
He's never been in a traffic jam that bad. It was bumper to bumper with absolutely no movement – he probably could've gotten out of his car and walked home faster – and it went on for over three exits on the highway. The restaurant his friends chose was a fair drive; it wasn't too far, but it did involve getting onto the highway and driving for a bit. He thought they'd be done before the road started to get clogged, but to their luck, it ended up being the polar opposite.
He finally pushes the door open and steps inside, immediately reaches down to unlace and toe off his shoes. He hangs his jacket on their coatrack and unwraps the scarf from around his neck.
"Awsten? Sweetheart, hey, you still up?"
His heart is throbbing. It's pulsating new waves of pain by the second. The signal was so bad and the drive was so long and it seemed like everything that could go wrong did, a cocktail of consequences that culminated with him not being able to reach Awsten and tell him what was going on.
He hopes he didn't worry too much.
"Aws?" He lowers his voice in case Awsten is sleeping, walks through the apartment and into their shared bedroom. And then he stops.
He can hear it. Tiny whimpers and choked sobs are coming from their bed. The blankets are tangled and tossed together in a way that completely eclipses Awsten from view. All Geoff knows is that he's crying. "Fuck, sunshine, what's wrong?"
The next few moments unfold so fast that he barely registers them.
Awsten practically falls out of bed and runs the short distance to connect them, jumps up – and Geoff thanks whoever is up there at this very moment for his quick reflexes – and into his arms. He buries his face in his shoulder and wraps his legs around his waist with a gasping sob, and then he's crying again.
And Geoff's own heart feels like Awsten just took a hammer and smashed it to smithereens. He rubs Awsten's back and holds him tightly. "Easy, easy love. You're okay. Try to breathe. Whatever's wrong, we can fix it, I promise."
He lets Awsten down a couple seconds later, but takes him into his arms as soon as his feet touch the ground. Awsten wraps his arms around his neck and he moves his to Awsten's waist, bringing him as close as physically possible without completely crushing him. "I'm here, I'm right here, angel. What happened? Talk to me. What's got you this upset?"
Awsten doesn't answer. He moves one hand up to his back, just below the blades of his shoulders, and starts to rub. Awsten's hair is tickling his nose and poking at the corners of his mouth and he puckers his lips, pressing a kiss to the soft strands. "I can't help you if I don't know, love. What happened?"
"I-I-" Awsten hiccups and lifts his face to meet his eyes. "I thought you left."
"Left?" If this is going where he thinks it is...
"Me," Awsten spits out. "You said two hours and then it was three and you wouldn't answer and you didn't text me like you always do and I just- thought you didn't want me anymore." He pauses. His voice is choked. "That you'd finally given up on me?" He phrases it as a question and goes silent afterward, stares up at Geoff with his bloodshot eyes and wet cheeks and quivering lip.
"Awsten..." He trails off with a shake of his head. He knew. He knew this would happen. He knows Awsten's anxiety too well for him to not have seen this. He knew Awsten would worry, he knew that his mind doesn't do well with worry and skyrockets things with completely plausible explanations to mythological heights. He pulls his hand from Awsten's back and moves both to cup his cheeks, to keep Awsten looking him in the eye. "Sunshine, I would never. I love you, okay? I love you with everything in my heart. You're the love of my life. I would never leave you. I never want to." He takes a breath and rubs his fingers along Awsten's jawbones. "I'm not going anywhere. You'll always have me, I promise."
"I just- you didn't- you usually, I-" Awsten stammers. "I'm sorry."
"We finished in two hours," he explains. "And then I hit so much traffic on the way back, angel, I promise I would've texted you if I could. But my phone didn't have signal because it was a dead zone and it was bumper to bumper for three exits straight. It was a mess. I promise you, swear on my life, I would've texted you if I could."
He knows what Awsten needs. He's been doing this long enough to memorize it. No amount of reassurance is enough for someone with depression. The disorder is like a monster perched on your shoulder, digging its claws into skin and pressing its words into brain, he doesn't love you he wants to leave you he already left you you don't deserve him. He knows that no matter how many times he says some things, Awsten may never believe him. He's okay with that. He'll keep saying it until it happens.
He feels the arms around his front again. Awsten presses his cheek against his chest with a whimper of finality. "I'm sorry...I just- I didn't hear from you and I assumed- fuck I'm so stupid, I'm sorry."
"Hey." He pushes Awsten back to hold him at arm's length. "Nothing about you is stupid, okay? This was just a shitty miscommunication. I love you, with all my heart. That's never going to change. I'm never going to leave you. I want you, for the rest of my life. Don't forget that."
"I just- sometimes it feels like too much," Awsten says. "Like I'm too much. And I don't want you to feel like you have to. Take care of me, yknow? 'Cause you don't. And if it ever does get to be too much...you can leave. Don't feel like you havta stay 'cause I won't be okay if you leave. I mean, I won't, but...don't let that keep you here-"
"Sunshine, stop, don't say that." He cuts Awsten off and tangles a hand through his hair. "You are not too much, okay? That's such a bullshit concept. You will never be too much. You have depression and some days are worse than others and sometimes they're all in a row, but that's part of it, love. You know that and I know that. You can't control this. You didn't ask for it. It sucks and I hate seeing you in pain, but if you think I'm going to leave you over it..."
"I just- don't you want someone easy? Someone that doesn't take this much work?" All that's left of his heart is dust. He hates hearing Awsten talk about himself like this; like he's a problem over a person. He hates knowing that this beautiful, radiant, big-hearted angel thinks so little of himself, because Awsten is just that. Beautiful. Radiant. Possessing a heart that barely fits in his body.
"I want you," he murmurs. He tilts Awsten's chin and presses their lips together. "Okay? You are all I want, for the rest of my life."
"Are you sure?"
"I've never been surer about anything."

Tumblr media
summary (thats more of a a/n then summary) - this was supposed to be the sub awsten smut but i got a bit off track but its still along those lines.
cw- hair pulling, switch reader, switch awsten, whining, face slapping, kissing, making out, grinding, established relasionship, teasing, swearing,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“awsten” y/n groans yet again, collapsing on top of her boyfriend, laying on the bed, and growing irritated. awstens hands slowly slide down to be gently laying on her back. hes been doing the same exact thing for what felt like hours to her. nipping and kissing her neck, every now and then taking her hips, grinding her against him. it was frustrating for y/n. awsten on the other hand? he loved it. he loved seeing and hearing her need him so badly. just so much so, that hes willing to hold himself out for just that.
“y/n” awsten groans back.
y/n peeks her head up out from between his neck to look at him. “stop teasing”
“fine fine” he dramatically huffs.
you sit back up with a slight smile somehow thinking you were finally gonna get what you wanted.
awsten grabs your cheeks to bring you into another kiss exept this one was more....gentle. slowly over time though he gets rougher with it and- yep! thats right. teasing.
you could feel him smirking in the kiss his usual cockiness coming back.
you pull him away from you, pulling on his hair. “i said stop” you say to him hitting him lightly on the side of his face and holding his jaw, making him look at you.
he whines at your action but quickly pulls away and tries to act like he didnt just completely enjoy that.
“ow what the fuck y/n!” awsten says looking up at you.
you cant help but laugh.
“why the fuck are you laughing?”
“did you just whine?” you laugh
“no? no, i did not just whine!” he insists.
“oh my god you so did!” you fall over his shoulder laughing.
“....your making this kinda awkward for me ya’ know?” he mumbles.
you sit up and your laughing dies down. gently, you cup his cheeks with you hands.
“i know im sorry. its ok i just didnt expect you to do that” you say rubbing his cheekbone with your thumb.
“well i didnt expect you to fucking hit me!” he screeches.
“yeah well you deserved it”

Gloom Boys.
He traced a finger over his lips as he sat outside of Dr Prince’s office, hoping desperately to hear something about his friend. He closed his eyes as he focused on his finger tracing along his bottom lip, his stomach tightening at the memory of stupidly deciding to kiss Alex. There was no way he could deny that the boy was cute, that he liked him more than he’d felt for anyone before. But he’d taken a chance that was poorly timed and Geoff knew that he’d continue to regret it.
Geoff stuffed his hands into his pockets as he willed his limbs to stop trembling, hoping desperately to run into nobody on his way to Ellis’s office. He kept his head down, counting the steps that he took to try and calm himself down. Reaching the office, Geoff didn’t bother to knock as he pushed open the door, beginning to frantically ramble… “Someone is going to do something really bad and it’s my fault and I can’t stop him but I can’t just watch him do it and I’m sorry and I’m scared and – Ellis?” Geoff raised his head with an instant frown, finding the office empty. He groaned, instead kicking the door shut behind him and heading around to the desk, instantly raising the abandoned bottle of medication to inspect the label curiously.
“Thank you, Mr Peter Evans.” Geoff mumbled tiredly to himself as he popped the cap on the bottle, tipping the bottle into his mouth and swallowing thickly. He rubbed his eyes as he flopped back into the doctor’s chair, propping his feet up onto the desk with a grunt. He swallowed a few more of the pills, grateful that Dr Ellis had left his office unlocked as he pulled open one of the drawers.
His hand instantly reached for the folder labelled with his name, pulling it open and narrowing his eyes to read it. He frowned as his eyes followed the lines, deepening as he read the doctor’s scrawled writing.
Name: Wigington, Geoff. D. O. B:  02/July/1989    Diagnosis:   Substance Abuse and Suicidal Behaviour  Reason for Admission: Attempted Overdose | Forced [x] Primary Doctor: Rowan Ellis  Location: Room 103

R. Ellis.
Geoff rolled his eyes at the doctor’s notes, stuffing the folder under his arm as he pushed to stand. He frowned, pocketing the bottle of pills to then turn and head out of the office. He sighed a little to himself as he headed back to his room, his heart instantly dropping at the lack of the other boy. Alex. Alex Hoskin. The things that he’d said about himself had stung Geoff, but it was the intent and desperation in his voice that had worried him. He felt awful, regretting the decision to hunt out a doctor – he knew the younger boy wouldn’t trust him for getting the Doctor.
He had been irrational and panicked and he scared Geoff. He hadn’t even felt that scared when he’d found the boy’s brother passed out on the bathroom floor. Awsten had overdosed accidently, he was defiant of his father and his family but had never expressed that he had any intention to die. His younger brother showed the contrary.
Geoff sat himself on the bed, his eyes squeezed tightly shut as he tried to block out the images of the young Hoskin fighting against Prince’s grip. He’d condemned him to life in the place that he wanted nothing more than to be free of. He could imagine the look on Mr Hoskin’s face, the disappointment and fear that held his features the first time that he had turned up with David and passed out in the living room. He closed his eyes as they began to tear up, raising his hands to rub at his eyes.
He tugged his shirt up enough to rip away the wrap that one of the nurses had applied, his hand dipping to scratch at the healing wounds without thought, his teeth gritting at the instant pain that blossomed across his abdomen. Remembering the look on Alex’s face as he’d tossed the bottle in his direction, Geoff grumbled to himself and blinked back the tears welling in his eyes. He gave a shaky breath as he dropped his folder to the floor to instead reach for the book by his bed. He slipped free the small blade tucked into the cover of the book, tugging up his sleeves to work on retracing the scarring along his wrists.

Getting tripped up and shoved about in the locker room?  Having your stuff stolen, destroyed and vandalised? Being picked on for reasons you don't understand? Texas high schooler Awsten Knight has experienced it all. But what can he do? He's not big and strong, but quite the opposite - him and his best friend Otto Wood are just easy prey for all the big highschool bullies.
Until he meets him.

Ahhhhhhhhhh
Yet again I've not heard of this guy before, but I seriously think you need to put a warning stating - Cuteness and fluff overload!!!
Don't mind my heart melting into a puddle of squisheness gloop...............
Also when I read 'One finger raised, he symbolised that he wasn't finished so....'
I immediately thought he'd raised his middle finger........so at first I was a bit confused so I had to re read that sentence twice before I got that he wasn't raising his middle finger - 🤦🤦🤦
