DAUMIER'S LAW
Paul: “I wanted to get into some minimalist music so I came to the studio and started trying to think of very simple pieces, based around the theme of injustice. .. I got intrigued by the idea of thinking ‘how few notes could I use, then?’ You start off thinking of just one note and then you embellish it a bit, trying to keep in the back of your mind to be as minimal as possible. And in the end I think I abondoned the idea of minimalism and just got into this slightly experimental music.”
Linda: “I got every book on Daumier and read all about his life and thought that it would be incredible to do a visual thing for Paul’s music. Daumier worked for a newspaper as a satirical cartoonist and went to prison a few times for his Art. A lot of his work was about injustice and it’s a theme that is so right for our times.”
Soon the two projects came together.
Geoff Dunbar: "Paul and Linda called and asked if I would like to make a film on Daumier and I said yes,”, “Before Rupert came along I had made a film on Toulouse-Lautrec so the Daumier idea was very exciting.”
“Paul did six pieces of music and they each had a title – Right, Wrong, Justice, Punishment, Payment, and Release. Then we pored through the works of Daumier, got everything that was available, and structured the story from the material. And where we had to link it we invented ‘in the style of’. We hung the story on one character, a man from one drawing by Daumier.”
The movie was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in March 1992, and won the top prize at the British Academy Of Film And Television Arts in 1993. Paul & Linda are credited as co-writers and producers of the movie.

When Winter Comes animated film - “The characters were designed between the director, Geoff Dunbar, and Paul…and the hair colour was very much directly from them”.
When the short animated film ‘When Winter Comes’ was released on 22 December 2020, just a few days after the release of the McCartney III album, which featured the song, it was met with widespread joy on Macca and Beatles social media. Most of the comments celebrated the fact that the film depicted Paul, Linda and the kids at High Park Farm, circa 1970/71. It’s even got Martha, their dog, it was pointed out.
There were, though, some problems with this interpretation. Well, for a kick off, the dad character, while clearly reminiscent of Paul on the farm, has the wrong colour of hair: reddish brown rather than Paul’s jet black. Most problematic is the fact that the kids depicted are most definitely not Heather and Mary. Instead, they are a red haired girl and a younger, blond haired boy (think it’s a boy but could be a girl).
Yet, we do have the character sitting under the tree who is clearly meant to be John Lennon. His pose is reminiscent of John’s on the cover of the Plastic Ono Band album and he is dressed as John was for The Beatles last photo-shoot.
So, that does ground the film in Paul’s life to some extent. It’s his old buddy, not some random bloke.
What about the mum character in the film? Well, she is, pretty clearly, a redhead. Not a blonde or a strawberry blonde. She’s a redhead, like the daughter. Is she reminiscent of how someone looked in 1970? Well, I’m glad you asked.
It was pretty much only at that time that Jane had that centre parting in her hair.
Look at the height differential between the mum and dad in the film, too. It’s more like a 5’6”/5’11” than a 5’9”/5’11”, yeah?
And while we’re at it, the dog isn’t quite Martha, is it? Like her somewhat but not really an old English sheepdog.
And that’s the thing: the whole animated film is delicately balanced between Paul’s real life and some alternate reality. Maybe in that other reality, John comes to visit. Sits under the tree, does a bit of writing.
A beautiful little film and not quite as it appears at first glance. Quite enigmatic.

I know you've probably gotten this question a lot, but what books do you recommend as an entry to American politics? I just turned 18 (a week after the midterms 😭) and I've tried to keep up with politics but quite frankly I was homeschooled and my mom is super conservative/conspiracy theorist, so I've never had any political influence besides Far-right and Chronically Online Leftist. I want to be able to make informed decisions but there's so much out there I don't even know where to start. Any book recommendations you have about politics, conspiracies, social issues, or otherwise related would be helpful!! Cheerleader — VoicePlay music video
youtube
This song is super catchy and the guys sing it very well. But like most pop songs, the lyrics and tune aren't terribly complicated. So what did VoicePlay do to make a repetitive number more interesting? They enlisted some of their Sing-Off friends to write an extra verse and give them some sweet dance moves. The result is a video that's incredibly entertaining.
Details:
title: Cheerleader
original performer: OMI
written by: Omar "OMI" Pasley, Clifton Dillon, Mark Bradford, Ryan Dillon, & Sly Dunbar
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein, & Alfredo Austin
release date: 11 August 2015
My favorite bits:
moving the song in a more pop / boy band direction than the original, since they'd just released a reggae take on a pop ballad
Layne's bouncy tonal percussion at the beginning and end
💃 Choreography! 💃
Eli singing ♫ "walks like a model" ♫ as he hops on the treadmill for a quick stroll
the presence of an extra towel specifically so Layne can twirl it over his head
♫ "Do you think I'm pretty?" ♫ ::hair check::
the cool weaving maneuver right before the new bridge section
Earl not quite being able to hide entirely behind Eli the way he could with Layne
the affronted looks on Eli, Tony, and Earl's faces when Layne and Geoff push them out of the way
himbo gym bro Geoff in the outro
Trivia:
The boys' excellent dance routine was created by Sing-Off season 4 choreographers Kristin Denehy (who also came back to help with their "Boy Bands in 5 Minutes" video) and Melanie Lewis-Yribar.
The original rap verse was written by Alfredo Austin from The Exchange, who were also on the 2015 Sing-Off tour. He has returned in recent years for further lyrical collaborations on VoicePlay's versions of "Superstition" and "Valhalla Calling".

Why do we fall for the same people over and over again?
Have you ever felt confused about why certain people decide to pick specific persons over and over again? Then it's time you know why.
Nonetheless, the type of person we date speaks a lot about our behaviourism, taste and preferences. When it comes to soul mates, however, research suggests that we tend to choose people who are not only similar to us in personalities but those who are a copy-paste of our past lovers.
So don't be struck to find that several exes share similarities to the people'speople's current partners. These are perhaps because people hold grudges about the life stressful events and emotions from the relationship dissolution, as experts argue.
In support of these, the stressful life events carried with emotional baggage from the relationship dissolution is a major trigger why people decide to choose people who tend to have similar features and personalities. Yet, holding on to past emotions constitutes aggravating stressful events and a major factor that complicates satisfaction in future relationships. Additionally, the relationship dissolution will negatively impact the satisfaction of the future relationship.
Simply put, the nature of the relationship dissolution has a meaning to the satisfaction of future relationships. That'sThat's to say, the worse we feel about our exes after relationship dissolution, the more satisfactorily we feel about the current relationship and vice-versa.
The findings by Christopher P. Pagundes indicated that the ex who showed a negative reaction after break-ups had less emotional baggage in the next relationships than those who responded with reserve.
Consequentially, people who date persons with similar personalities risk finding themselves in similar stressful events, and a cycle of emotions, possibly because relationships tend to have some degree of similarity coupled with ups and downs.
As love is unpredictable, so is the dating scene, where people tend to choose people they would not have dated. Likely, the qualities of people they say they want in love are finally not the ones they choose in the end.
As the article of the BBC Future Why your type might be your ex-partner, it is put that there are higher chances of choosing a person similar to those we dated before despite the tendency that we might do it out of our wish.
"Whether you like it or not, a partner who is active for you is probably more like your ex than you would prefer to acknowledge. However, the article explains that your type can also be a good match for your personality.
As Robin Dunbar, the renowned British relationship expert, believes people must have similar tastes for them to have successful relationships that would last for a long time.
On a similar note, whether it is a relationship or friendship, people must be interested in the same things and share similar character in life; without it, the partner would always disagree.
Another research by Yoobin Park and Geoff MacDonald published in the National Academy of Sciences found that some people might have a specific type of people they want to date on simultaneous dates.
As per the Yoobin research, we tend to have a similar type that we like, and similarly, certain special people tend to always like us.
According to the study, this is because we tend to attract the same people, and similarly, those people tend to choose us.
Reasons why we choose similar people
As earlier said and have been told that "opposites attract" where differences among people change during the marriage; instead, new research indicates that we fall for the people we are like-minded.
Previous studies have argued that people change each other as time goes on but, depending on the recent studies, tend to revert to the existing truth.
As Yoobin Park'sPark's study puts it, the phenomenon is that when the relationship ends, people attribute the break-up to their ex-partner's-partner's personality and decide they need to date a similar person instead of a different type of person.
"There is a tendency that people continue to date a similar personality," the report writes.
In every relationship, people learn strategies for working with their partner'spartner's personality. If your new partner'spartner's personality resembles your ex-partner's-partner's personality, transferring the skills you learned might be an effective way to start a new relationship.
Fun and enjoyment
One of the people that choose like-minded people is the chemistry between the two people when they meet. Here we can say laughter and enjoyable interactions would make people repeatedly fall for the same person.
Like-minded people like each other too
All we know is that we don'tdon't choose ourselves, neither do other people choose themselves but on this point, likeness might come reciprocally on both sides. On the other hand, when our choices are not reciprocated, automatically, it becomes unrequited love, but for the specificity of likeminded, there are high chances they will like you back.
Self-actualization
As Martin's Buber'sBuber's conception purports, the relationship partners could otherwise hide aspects of the self to create greater wholeness. Also, according to Abraham Maslow, people have personal views towards their loved ones, making them fall for the same people over time.
A reminder
One recent research also indicated that people prefer the persons who remind them of their past partners over those who do not believe in the new term ''transference'', where emotions of the past relationship are transferred into the current relationship.
On top of that, it was found that people would rather go for those who resemble their parents than their mates who do not. On this point, people will fall for the same person repeatedly.

“Rupert and the Frog Song” is a Whimsical Delight
Human or bear, a child’s imagination is the best form of transportation.
How else can one find oneself in a frogs-only cave watching a once-every-200-years performance of “We all Stand Together” by a group of animated amphibians?
Only by imagination or via Paul McCartney and Geoff Dunbar’s “Rupert and the Frog Song,” the 1984 short restored in 4K and out again to celebrate the centenary of Rupert Bear, who first appeared in the Daily Express Nov. 8, 1920, and remains a touchstone of English childhood to this day.
Pipe-smoking papa bears dressed like golfers, bipedal elephants, leaves that morph into butterflies, frolicking frogs, singing black cats and an evil white owl with red eyes are all in on the story, which isn’t really a story at all. Rather, “Rupert and the Frog Song” is a bit of fantastical, whimsical psychedelia with an important message conveyed in music:
Win or lose, sink or swim/one thing is certain, we’ll never give in/side by side, hand in hand/we all stand together, the Frog Chorus sings in the one-song soundtrack.
It’s little wonder Rupert’s mum doesn’t believe her little bear’s story when he returns from his walk in the hills - this is the kind of fantasy that could only spring from a child’s imagination. Or the mind of McCartney.

AX1000: Contextual Studies in Animation (Semester 1) Week 5
Starting week 5 of conceptual studies, we watched a short animation called UBU by Geoff Dunbar, I must admit once again m not a massive fan of this animation, for me the designs of the characters we unexciting out of proportion and the story left me wondering what it was I just watched, I understand that the animation is based on a play called UBURO! by Alfred Jerry but the animation doesn’t explain really what is going on. I get the gist that it’s about a slob who is coaxed by his mother to perform a coo on their king, which he does and then a battle ensues which he loses to the king’s son who acts in revenge but that was it, sadly I found it confusing and somewhat boring, I did like the way the slob was cocky arrogant and evil when in power but a wimp the second something goes wrong, I also enjoyed the scene where the prince is visited by his ancestor, who gives him a sword to help him avenge his family, I found that this scene was good because of the narrators effect and the lighting and use of scale.
The second animation I watched was called The Pearce Sisters by Luis Cook. In contrast to the previous animation I really enjoyed this, the animation itself was brilliant; the movement of the characters, the way harsh rain is used to create atmosphere, the various perspective camera shots that are utilised and the size difference of the two characters which matches their physical capabilities. I also enjoyed how towards the end of the story it ends with a dark twist that leaves you questioning whether you are disgusted by the two women or if in some way leaves you feeling like you can’t help but feel sorry for them.
The following animations I watched after where animations from Banksy the infamous street graffiti artist, it is interesting to see how his art has been used in animations to tell an even larger story, more so than his still images can tell alone.
Next, I looked at the work by an animator named Uli Meyer, this animator is famous for his (uncredited) work on the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit and was character designer for An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, he was the key animator and layout artist for the film FernGully: The Last Rainforest. Meyer is also known for having created many award-winning movies for advertising, television and other feature films in 2D, 3D and as well as some live action hybrids for example his animations on the film Space Jam. I have always a fan of Uli’s work since a child and am in awe at his abilities to animate. Highly inspirational.
The second to last animation we watched was by Aleksandr Petrov called Old Man and The Sea. This film is visually stunning: the use of colours, realistic looking characters, the art style is beautiful the way the colours blend and merge to create the setting with an appearance as if they were created with acrylic paints, each frame is a piece of art; individually outstanding but when animated creates a magical visual experience, the motion of the characters looks real and highly detailed, you can instantly see the animators have an inconceivable understanding of physical motion and anatomy plus the story is captivating (although a little confusing at times).
