But! That’s not to say that you can’t ever get there! 

To be totally honest with you, going to film school both for my undergrad and my masters degree was the best decision I could have made -- not because I learned a ton in class (I mean I did but lol) but because I was able to meet sooooooo many people and work on a ton of projects. 

I don’t think you have to go to film school by any means, but I do think that if you want to be in the industry, you have to know people in the industry, and you have to work on a lot of projects in order to familiarize yourself with that world, no matter what capacity; if it’s cinematography or acting or editing or producing, etc. 

So if that means going to film school, then do it!! If that means just scouring different casting websites or facebook pages, do it! If that means calling and asking if anyone needs a PA, do it! Don’t think that you’re limited to like, CalArts or something, because you’re not. But by that same token, don’t think that just because you get into CalArts means you now don’t have to put in the work. 

I went the university route because I wanted to be qualified to teach one day, and I wanted to be exposed to as many different kinds of filmmaking and people as possible, and I wanted the opportunity to mess up as many times as I needed to. Because when you’re in school is the safest time to fuck up and make mistakes -- the real world isn’t so forgiving. And I believe I got all of that and more.

Honestly, at the end of the day, my advice to you is to sit down with yourself and ask, “is this a risk worth taking?” because if you love film, genuinely and truly love it, then the answer will be yes, and you can figure out what route you want to take to get there. Not everything is as simple as “go to school, graduate, get a million-dollar job.” But it can be as simple as “surround yourself with the people you need to, in the space that will help you learn and grow.”
