It's time!!

Sharing my contribution to the Umbral Wings Tarot Deck with my art for the Knight of Water!

Going to dip a little bit into the designmaking process itself under the cut!

The Knight of Water is thematically about sensitivity. Charm, romance imagination-as a person, it's about a 'knight in shining armor' type character who may help others with the matters of the heart.

I also wanted to note that another cool thing about this deck is that the artists were designated their suit depending on their art and rendering style! The Air suit focuses on more atmospheric type art, Fire is character symbolism driven, in the Earth suit you'll se a lot of traditional-style rendering, and in the Water suit you'll see a lot more anime-inspired art styles!

With these factors in mind, I wanted a composition that would pay homage to the classic anime bishoujo genre--sailor moon and utena played heavily into the design and composition--something with lots of sparkles, atmospheric framing, a pretty waterfall to tie in the elemental theme, and lots and lots (and LOTS) of roses. (Fun fact! If you look at each rose, they have a heart in the centre! Each one was carefully and painstakingly hand drawn!). The pose that was chosen for this card was also a direct homage to the classic Sailor Moon style transformation sequences (and also swan mating dances with the wings), with the element of a 'bleeding heart' visual cue so to speak with the red roses and petals to the chest haha--it was fun going through different pose ideas before settling on this one! Roses and thorns go hand in hand, so thorny vines were also added at the bottom so that they become more evident when the card is inverted! (The inverted card speaks of emotional upset, depression, hypersensitivity, and lashing out)

For the dragon design itself, I took the 'prince on a white horse' and 'knight in shining armor' aspect and meshed them with leafy and weedy sea dragons and betta fish from real life to make a unicorn-like design--a creature that is traditionally associated with sensitivity and emotions--with a classic anime magical girl spin. I wanted the design to look ethereal and noble, and still clearly a dragon instead of a horse! (It was trickier than one might think!)

That's all the notes I have at the moment! Overall this was an Incredibly fun project to think through, I know I've been absolutely vibrating off the walls to share this haha! Everyone else has also brought their A game to each card in this deck, be sure to check them out through the KS link when you can, I can assure you that each and every card is just as lovingly rendered as this one!

One of the things I just can’t get over about Resident Evil games, specifically later ones, is the swearing.

I don’t know why, I cannot explain my reasoning, but I giggle every time Ethan swears beCAUSE!!! He does it so often!!! Every other sentence out of this man’s mouth is him cussing and it’s so funny?? He’s this relatively mild-mannered guy who goes absolutely fucking apeshit on the swearing, straight up starts swearing like a middle schooler who learned what swear words were yesterday!!

And it’s the other characters too!! It isn’t just Ethan!!

Leon in RE4 swears like he thinks he’s going to be in trouble for it??? Like, his voice is just very gentle and quiet and I can’t get over his “Well I don’t give a damn” All of his swearing reads to me like a little boy who doesn’t want his mommy hearing him say bad words and it’s so fucking funny???

Mia swearing is also funny. And Chris. Just, all of them. The actors sound so uncertain when they swear, like they just don’t know if they’re reading the script right, and it’s honestly amazing, I love it so much.

It’s also extremely funny because RE1 and RE2 both didn’t have a lot of swearing in them (that I recall) so it comes across as all the characters going through some tough shit and deciding “I am no longer PG-13.” But Ethan starts cussing like a sailor the very same game he’s introduced. So it’s like you have these hardened officers of the law who only started swearing after difficult times and you also have this mild-mannered computer engineer who swears up a fucking storm whenever the fuck he feels like it.

Very funny.

On the topic of voice lines that I like, one of my all-time favourites is RE2, when Claire and Leon are in the squad car at the very beginning of the game and Leon tells Claire to look in the glove box and she does and I will never in my life be able to start giggling at the deadpan line delivery of “This is a gun.” Why does she say it the way she does? I don’t even know how to describe the way she says it, like it’s kind of chiding or kind of “Leon what the fuck” in the calmest possible voice and dear Whoever-Voiced-Claire-in-RE2 please marry me I love your voice so much

That being said, my brain has fully switched to early Halloween mode and came up with a Jekyll and Hyde concept involving Sasha (I realize this concept could also work well with Nona) because I'm a sucker for monster transformations and fascinated by the concept of the separation of the self into individual aspects as a physical manifestation

there's this thing about both sunday and maruki where people - both fans and characters in-game - think that what motivates them is the need for control. it makes sense, after all, doesn't it? of course that the guy who wants to, well, control the whole world would love control.

but i think the missing detail here is that while yes, they're both obviously control freaks (i'd argue sunday significantly more than maruki, which is why it's easier to make this mistake with him), people seem to misunderstand that the control isn't the *reason*, but rather the *means*.

they both have a very clear, objectively selfless goal in mind. THAT'S the core of why they do these things. that's why they seek control - only by controlling everyone can they achieve that goal that they perceive is right. the chase for godhood doesn't come from the clear-cut wish to control others, it's to control others *for their own good*. the control is only a step in the plan, not its end

tldr it's just not control for the sake of control. it doesn't come from any selfish chase for power

people just tend to fall into this assumption bc that's what villains usually seek, which is fair tbh. it's an easy mistake to make, especially for the in-game characters who usually lack the necessary context or come into this conflict with their own biases (coughakechicough), which in turn can also twist audience's views of the villain in question

ig you can kind of compare it to a parent who isn't a control freak as is, but because they're genuinely concerned for their child and don't want to see any harm come to them so they're extra careful about them and end up not letting them have a normal childhood as a result, basically.

that's why they hit harder imo. bc you can't actually blame them for taking the steps they did, once you fully understand their goal. it's just a question for you, as a viewer: what is more important to you? contentment, safety, and joy, or freedom, reality, and individuality? is guaranteed happiness worth giving up your personhood? but... what if your definition of happiness doesn't align with theirs?

I wanted to share this fun playlist (that I have locally, in foobar2000, with mp3s, because that's how I roll), so I have remade it on Spotify for those who use it.

Surprisingly the vast majority is actually on there - it's only a handful of tracks that aren't. A few things I've been able to replace nicely with covers though (why is the Final Fantasy X-2 soundtrack not on there? Garbage platform).

It's also an ever ongoing work-in-progress as I discover new sick jams in different games, and rearrange things so it ebs and flows better. But here you are: sweet videogame music, in a curated order, that's been in the works in various forms for like 5 years.
