Area estimates of Teyvat as of Genshin Impact version 3.3: The Chasm (above ground) subregion of Liyue and the Dharma Forest subregion of Sumeru
This is my first long post regarding Genshin worldbuilding this year!
Here are various links to the writeup:
Reddit(r/Genshin_Lore) | Reddit(r/Genshin_Impact) | PDF
I paste here a copy of the abstract:
This is a continuation of the area and elevation estimates of various locations in Teyvat, following a line of work that started with areas accessible in Genshin Impact version 2.2 regarding analysis of in-game size and speculative in-lore size based on semi-historical and geographical details mentioned in the 2021 Moonchase Festival. The method is mainly a pixel to in-game then hypothetical in-lore direct conversion further compared with areas or phenomena that have similar magnitudes in real life. This study added area approximations for the above ground Chasm and Dharma Forest, Sumeru. The calculated sizes were briefly analyzed with respect to other regions in Teyvat and more extensively with respect to various real life places, institutions, and phenomena. The hypothetical in-lore size of the above ground Chasm was analyzed as an impact crater and was found to be comparable to some of the largest impact events on Earth. The in-game Chasm was similar to medium to large scale open-pit mines in real life. In a similar fashion, Dharma Forest and its various subareas were compared to various forests, cities, and academic institutions in real life, with emphasis on comparisons mostly with SSWANA countries. Overall I find that this particular conjectured in-lore conversion factor coupled with the hypothetical qualitative interpretation remains to be one reliable way to consistently resize the world of Genshin impact from in-game to plausibly realistic in-lore dimensions.

I hope you enjoy!

How things I make for my HC end up being in Genshin
I will share with you a matter of great pride for me ♥ I've wanted to write a post like this for quite some time but there was never enough time.
Some of you might be familiar with my Genshin OC Hette (eventually known also as Vesna and Silver). I created her sometime during Year 1 of Genshin and her story started and was meant to remain in Mondstadt first. But as my preferences changed (the interaction target moved from Diluc to Zhongli), her story just naturally, in small chunks, progressed from Mond to Liyue. I didn't rewrite it, I simply continued. It was incredibly fun to watch as I had no idea how far her story would actually go.
But the probably most amusing thing on this journey was watching, how things I made for Hette and her story, with no or very vague base in the lore at THAT time, ended up happening or being verified by the game not so long after. Some of them visual, some in worldbuilding and some ABSURDLY and unbelievably accurately happened in the story. My biggest trophy is that I basically came up with whole Furina's story concept long before Fontaine aired. If you're interested, just keep reading ♥
Hette's green patterns
The first thing that comes to my mind are the green patterns (and palette) on Hette's scarf and coat-thingy. We didn't even have Inazuma when I created them. What I had in mind was that she used to study botanics in Sumeru and I wanted it so seem somewhat oriental. Well, as things have it, when we got the Sumeru academia, we learned that all students wear berets with lining color specific to their darshan. Here's the beret for the Amurta darshan which would naturally include Hette's botanics studies:
It just seriously looks like she just loyally wears an Amurta scarf. Thanks, lore ♥
2. Outfit
Speaking of clothes, let's focus on the outfit as a whole. When Genshin first teased Collei's outfit, it instantly became one of my fav designs in Genshin. And there was no wonder, I CLEARLY have a type. Just look at the similarity and placement of design elements (even the ombre on tights xD). Hette was created roughly one year prior Collei's first reveal - outfit-wise, with no basis for future Sumeru visuals. I wanted to combine her being from Mondstadt with influence from her studies in Sumeru. Well, and as coincidence has it, Collei is from Sumeru, influenced by Mondstadt. Same design concept.
3. Silver's palette
Since we're at visuals now, I will go fast forward to Silver. If Hette is a Bulbasaur, Silver is Venusaur. She's a sword user with affiliation for Dendro.
Now if you think she looks like fem version of Alhaitham, with his secondary blue color substitued with her magenta, you're not wrong. She totally does. Only I designed her sometime in March/April 2022 while the first leaks of Haitham's didn't come sooner than July of the same year.
4. Time and leylines
When I started with Hette's story, I made few blind reaches with the worldbuilding. I wanted her to communicate with slimes, I decided it was plausible for the slimes to reside in leylines and as such her ability needed to use leylines in a deeper sense than your regular catalyst mage. She's not OP but she has this niche ability to reach into leylines. After the moonchase festival, I yolo decided I wanted to send her back in time to meet the adepti of old (also would give her the much needed knowledge of Morax). There was no known time travel nor time relativity in Genshin by then so this was the most baseless move I ever did with my lore. I used her leyline ability to make the accidental time travel - she would drop back in time when using her ability near leyline disorder. Meaning I decided to connect Genshin time with Leylines.
The next Genshin update gave us Raiden's second story quest which confirmed both time relativity and its connection to leylines. Pretty wow moment for me.
5. Zhongli pulling his fav peeps from different spaces
This one is still insanely riddiculous to me. So you know how Hette involuntarilly traveled back in time. Long story short, MANY things happened there but eventually she got sucked in the time stream again and had the choice to attempt to move back to her original time. And she did just that. However, when she reached the moment she believed lead to her OG time, she lacked the ability to crack from the leyline space back to the normal one. However, dendro slimes see her there and they manage to call Zhongli to help. That's where I made another completely baseless move and had him pull Hette out of the leyline space using his powers.
What happened two updates after I estabilished this fact? Yes, this.
Different space? Checked. Zhongli pulling someone out? Checked. HOW THE HELL???
6. THE WHOLE FURINA THING
You think this is crazy coincidence? Weeeelll, wait till you hear this one. When Hette's back in the early Archon War era, she has her Vision still with her, in time of no Visions. In another baseless move, I decided that her Vision would thus have strongly amplified powers, almost akin to a Gnosis. This eventually leads to her being mistaken for a god. Trying to not bring attention to her time travel (to not change anything), she has to roll with this claim. She ends up being part of the adepti but she doesn't engage with them in fear of being revealed. Meanwhile common people revere her so there is this invisible wall between her and others, she's lonely and this act is extremely painful for her. She's not aging at this point because the dendro is so strong with her it just keeps instantly correcting her. And she has no idea how long she'll have to keep it up.
SOUNDS FAMILIAR???
Zhongli, who got to meet her in the future(Hette's original time) had no idea about this connection between her and the weird god who used to fight alongside them for a brief time in the past. He figures out this connection when he realizes Hette was sucked in by the Leylines. So you have this god figure learning that a mere mortal was forced to play a god role in a lonely selfless act and said god figure is pained by that realization.
SOUNDS FAMILIAR??????
(And yes, I estabilished this headcanon over a year before Fontaine came).
For the record, Furina had it worse. She was truly alone. In Hette's case (or Vesna's, that's the name she went by back then), she had the luck of Marchosius being too people-person (bear) and too nosy. He eventually got her to spill the beans and confide in him. Ever since then, he kept mentoring her in a way, looking out for her and providing moral support. Which is the only reason she didn't go insane.
7. One more outfit thingy
So we estabilished Hette traveled there and back again in time, after which she becomes who I call Silver. An identity she estabilishes because she feels her Hette self is dead and doesn't want to have anything to do with her Vesna self. But a lot of leyline stuff happened, right.
When I was designing her outfit, I wanted to put a pattern on her gray sleeves. I chose hollow circles with dots because this has been one of my fav designs for a looong time, there was no real underlying thought for it. And as far as I knew, it had never been used in Genshin in any way (and they have a lot of symbols there).
Well, guess where the hollow circle with a dot appeared for the first time in Genshin? If it isn't Irminsul, aka the tree which's roots are the FRICKING LEYLINES which Hette can enter...?
For the record, I later realized Paimon has something a little similar - a big star and half a circle around it in a constellation on her cape. But Paimon is widely theorized to be affiliated with time. Time is somehow connected to the leylines so the funny coincidence still stands.

The way Lantern Rite is becoming less and less about the Yaksha and more into something new every year makes me wonder why they even bothered giving it that link to Xiao. I mean sure the reason festivals are celebrated can change over time but that's not really what it feels like in Genshin to me...it feels more like they just forgot or don't wanna write about Xiao anymore outside of a cameo here & there because they know the fans expect to see him, since ya know, that's what they said the Lantern Rite was about?
I don't think it was ever specifically about the Yaksha, but rather a commemoration of the dead (which included the Yaksha and other Adepti by default), thus the original focus on the Mingxiao Lantern and Xiao by extension.
Year 2 Lantern Rite was about Keqing solving a fireworks theft mystery, Year 3 was about the famously still alive Madame Ping and Year 4...
Lantern Rite is surely meant to be analogous to Chinese New Year so it's no wonder they don't really want to commit to that theme, but in a... narrative where they did explicitly tie it to the development and healing of one specific character, it does get kind of strange if that one character doesn't get a major role. It's not such a big deal for something like Windblume by contrast. They might want to do a Xiao episode every two years instead of annually, which I would understand to an extent, but... we'll see.
Though interestingly, Moonchase was about a dead Adepti...

Resurrection: Explanation
They seemed to come from all direction: the mountains to the South, the sea to the East, the ruins of the Guili Assembly to the North, Mt. Tianheng to the West, and every inch of life far beyond each corner of Teyvat; each speck of ash, of chalk, of dust...
As I absolutely don't want to intrude on the game's events, past and present, I wanted to keep the nature of Guizhong's 'resurrection' rather in the corner of a... natural phenomenon. It's stated within Genshin's own lore that gods never truly die, and we all know that elements never cease to exist either. When Guizhong succumbed to death during the Archon war, the element that she had originally formed from never perished. If anything, everything always returns to dust, but she exists within that concept as she is the element of dust. It's why it lingers at her fingertips and why her attire disintegrates into it at its tips. And Teyvat is littered in ash and dust, and this only accumulates more throughout the centuries. For example, it is my personal (firm) belief that the darkening of the sky above Cuijue Slope is actually a dust cloud, or what we were made to read as 'black dust that choked the heavens' (and still does) as a result of her form having perished so long ago. If so, dust cannot disintegrate any further and/or beyond itself, and it's lingered for thousands of years. Has it possibly grown over-time, and does it pull more ashes into itself? All valid questions, but all in all, if it's dust, that means that it is her.
Keeping this in mind, my concept of her returning is rather simple. As I tie them all so very strongly into their element, and considering that hers is so overbearingly present throughout Teyvat, it is not far fetched by any means to think that the gods could reform from their element after regaining their strength within this phase of 'death' that is not ever final for them. Beyond that, I think it's incredibly dependent on the type of god that they are and what they are tied to, as we know not all of them are tied to a physical element (time, wisdom, to name two examples). With Guizhong being tied to dust (and ash and chalk, as Albedo notes the significance of in the creation life in his character story), I think it may be easier for her to do so, as long as she's capable of, in essence, using something as an energy battery. This simply leaves me with that latter and the timing for her return.
While I had originally decided on the Moonchase Festival, due to its tie to the moon, or specifically, the full moon (a meta for another time); I was a little silly and entirely forgot one monumental detail about Lantern Rite. It must have been a night during which my mind took a little stroll down the pebble beach. But again, I digress. The detail is as follows:
Lantern Rite is a festival in Liyue celebrated on the first full moon of the year and lasts for five days.
What is more symbolical than two of Liyue's founders to be tied to the new year in one way or another; a nation that celebrates its traditions and honours its forebears as it does? But outside of that, this doesn't come without inherent reasons for her directly as well. To reform as she does, especially to redraw into an appearance that perished long ago; it wouldn't be as simple as putting one's mind to it; one would, additionally, likely need a separate body of energy to generate the power needed to accomplish this. Again, pending the incoming meta, the celestial body she's tied to, the moon, when it's at its most significant in either power or symbolical importance (the faith/belief from humanity). A year's first full moon.
Remember the lone glaze lily that overlooks Liyue Harbor? It would be occurring on that cliffside, not chosen out of any notion of romanticism per se, but simply because of how it's one of the 'items' that she has always had such an inherently strong tie to (as we know, when she passed, the glaze lilies dwindled in number significantly, even if that had more to do with the land being ridden of tragedy), much more so than any other. Not only that, but Liyue Harbor represents the area that houses most of the people that are descendants of those that once lived in the Guili Assembly, who were in part, her people. That is another tie, for humanity is exceedingly important to her. Beyond that, from the cliffside there is a fully unobstructed view of the moon even before it reaches its apex as it rises in the east.
What does it look like? It mostly happens in the veil of nighttime, so the entire occurrence would hardly be noticeable to the human eye, nor does any mortal seem to venture out to that location habitually (and as for immortals, Zhongli and Madame Ping are likely its only visitors). But as dusk settles upon the land, motion is found in the dust cloud above Cuijue Slope. Flecks separate from it one by one, and as they do, it thins out, releasing the area of its gloom, joining flecks of dust and ash that gather from all sides of Teyvat to that one cliffside into a small zephyr of sorts. And it takes a long time, it's slow at first, and the higher the moon reaches, the faster they are carried on the wind, or rather, they themselves cause a breeze simply by their motion. And in the midst of this, as the moon dims, seeming a little less luminous than any other full moon throughout the year (but nothing too odd or inherently noticeable), the flecks gather into a form, one recognisable to anyone who knew her in days long passed. I can see it taking hours, and at its peak, it's a rush of wind that's caused by the whirl of them, and the more the moon dims, the brighter the form held within the flecks becomes, and the fuller and clearer it becomes: the same garments, the same hair, the same sleeves. She re-manifests into a solid and corporeal form as she once was, over a period of numerous hours. This would, however, leave her drained of lot of her power for possibly weeks, but ultimately, she would return to how she was, as they all are.
#[ meta. ] her manuscripts still lie unfinished in her abode. the blank pages give one cause for contemplation on what might have been.#[ /phew. ]#[ i don't know how many will read all of this-- but in case anyone wants to: it's here. ]#[ i didn't want it to be very long and it easily could have been twice as long but i /tried/ to avoid it. ]#[ there was truly no point to add more; even if tempted! i could talk forever and a day about this one. ]#[ now to make my little bullet point list to add to this. ]#[ ... and also then include it at the bottom. i guess. here we go. ]#[ alright-- off to write a little sum-up 'verse' post that i can put up a link to this to. ]#[ v: present. ] all wrapped up in a city that has existed for so many moons to date. all these things: they are why people chase the moon.

Character Profiles:
Aega
Aega is the Moon Goddess and rules the Moon with her husband. During her mortal existence, Aega was known all over Teyvat for her unrivaled beauty and wisdom. Born during the end of the Archon War, Aega founded the Qixing with Rex Lapis and his Adepti to rebuild Liyue Harbor. Aega, out of all the Adepti was the most selfless out of them, but she was also the one whom most people grew jealous of. Descending in a battle protecting Liyue by self-sacrifice, Aega ascended to Celestia. Seeing her worthiness and all of her self-sacrifices for Liyue, Celestia granted her power worth a thousand years of knowledge and the title of the Moon Goddess along with her husband. Every Moonchase Festival, Aega would send a fragment of her soul down to Teyvat to watch over Liyue’s progression. Aega cast a curse upon Qinyang before agreeing to her terms; Qinyang, as the Sun Goddess herself, is not allowed to destroy or enter Teyvat for as long as the Crystal of Divinity lives.
Yingyue
Yingyue is the husband of Aega and the Moon god. He rules the Moon together with his wife. Even though Yingyue has experienced many human accomplishments and advancements, Aega is way more powerful than him even with his full power. But Yingyue doesn’t mind that. In his life as a mortal, he was mostly a shy and awkward person. After ascending to Celestia with his wife, he looked very intimidating but once you’ve met him, you'll know that isn’t true at all. Yingyue tried to save Aega from self-sacrifice because she was the foundation and glue that held everyone together and Yingue did not wish to see her descending. Yingyue eventually stopped trying to persuade her and decided to descend with her for the good of Liyue and for the life of Liyue to flourish. At first, Yingyue was reconsidering his choices, but he trusted Aega. Like Aega, he sends a fragment of his soul into Liyue to check out the vendors and possibly bring back something new from his old home that he is sure flourished after his and Aega’s disappearance.
Qinyang
Qinyang was born with a special condition where she would give off lots of heat and flames. Her condition was new and unknown. This created many struggles for Qinyang. Qinyang wanted to be just like Aega, strong, determined, loved, and most of all, charming. Qinyang wasn’t necessarily charming but her beauty would be blanketed by her flames. Qinyang loved Amizu but he was the King of The Seas. If Qinyang got closer, she would have destroyed him completely. Qinyang made the devastating decision to descend herself in the deep depths of the Chasm because she was jealous of Aega and felt like nobody loved her. She stayed inside the cave of the Chasm for a long period without any food or hydration. As she wished, Qinyang died and ascended to Celestia. When she did, she also gained authority over the Sun and could channel its energy and divine power. With her power, Qinyang showed no more mercy to Aega and wanted to take her to Celestia with her. She started to wreak havoc on Liyue, especially the Chasm. Aega agreed to go with her if she would stop destroying Liyue and all of their progress. Qinyang much obliged to her demands. Qinyang was also cast upon a curse where she could not enter Teyvat or wreak havoc on it once again. She knew about the only way that could happen and once she found out, she did everything to accomplish it; and once she has met the requirement, she will not forgive Aega.
Kiyan
Kiyan was not born as a mortal human being but born of a fragment of Yingyue’s soul. Kiyan is also part illuminated beast. Making her an Elaphocentaurs. She is one hard worker with a special soul and life to fight and learn.
Taiyun
Taiyun was created by a fragment of Aega’s power and was kidnapped by Qinyang. She erased Taiyun’s memory of being with Aega and replaced it with a mindset of Qinyang as her Master and she must obey her. Now she is sent into Teyvat to fight against her own family.
Yue Tu
Yue Tu was born of a fragment of Aega’s power, taking the form of an illuminated beast resembling a Moon rabbit. He was given a human and rabbit form a little later when Aega ascended to Celestia. Spending his entire life on the Moon, Yue Tu yearned to interact with new people and explore worlds beyond the Moon.
Misha
Once a mortal, Misha felt she was created for more than a mortal life. She felt connected to the Gods and wished they could take her in. As she prayed each day in the mountains of the Adepti, one particular Goddess saw something in Misha. Her unyielding passion and desire. It sparked something in the Sun Goddess. She decided to take her as she needed a servant. The Sun Goddess created a mirage and granted Misha the opportunity to work for her. Misha gladly accepted the offer, not knowing who or what the consequences were. Since then, she has been an eternal faithful servant towards the Sun Goddess.
Varana
Varana has important jobs within the walls of Celestia. She chooses single handedly if someone will become a God. Her job is not to be messed around with and she needs to choose very carefully by their mortal actions. Even if their actions may seem good or innocent, no one can really tell what their plans are. Many people have deceived Varana and gained Godhood through her. She lives to regret these choices, one in particular, Qinyang.
~Sun and Moon: Crystal of Divinity~
~Prologue~
The fate of time between Gods and Mortals has always been distant. Gods are beyond the humane eras and have advanced in a horrifying way. The doings of Gods and Goddesses could lead to the supervisor of the Universe Aurelia to be infuriated. The fate of the universe relies on the Celestials on Earth.
An event lost in time, three special and courageous friends were born. They roamed the lands of Teyvat, especially Liyue, freely. Two of them managed to fall in deep desire for each other, and decided to get married. Despite the two of them starting a new life, their friend was not forgotten. They carry the names of Aega, Yingyue, and Qinyang. Though the trio was close, Qinyang still felt a sense of loneliness and hatred only love would dispel. Seeing her friends having the most wondrous life, overtime she grew envious. Jealousy feeding on Aega and Yingyues love for each other. Trying to remove her mind away from these distractions, she decided to put the lives of Liyueans at hand. She wanted to be the hero if Liyue was ever attacked. The time finally came for her to be recognized amongst the sea of people. A beast by the name of Manticore emerged onto Liyue Harbor. The size of it was more than Qinyang could’ve ever imagined. She attempted to perform her most powerful spells and strike it from various angles and still no use.
Taking matters into her own hands, Aega marched on over and pushed her out of harm's way, while at the same time deflecting a fire bomb. The blowout changed the mountains and shook the entirety of Liyue harbor. Even though Aega managed to banish the beast, Qinyang was still partially hit by the Manticores’ power. Qinyang was infused with Pyro energy surrounding her entire body. Fleeing the scene, Qinyang quickly ran away leaving a trail of fire. Everyone cheered Aega on and praised her for her power. Qinyang on the other hand cried by herself near the ocean. She thought that Aega always stole her limelight and always gets praised. At this point Qinyang had enough of the torment and the loneliness on Teyvat. She delved into the depths and seconds later created an explosion. One big enough that shook Liyue and flooded it for weeks. The landscape of a nearby stone forest was also altered. It is known as the Guyun Stone Forest. Qinyang drowned to the depths of the ocean and her body vaporized into thin air reaching the bottom. The only thing afloat was her gown and some jewelry Aega gave to her as a sign of friendship. As her body and soul vaporized, she saw the divine gateway to Celestia nearby. This was a new life for her. A way to start over a new life without any distractions. When Qinyang ascended to Celestia, she gained authority over the Sun and was allowed to rule it and channel its power. She was given the title of the Sun Goddess.
When Qinyang ascended to Celestia, the thoughts and mercy she showed for Aega of those bygone years fizzled away. A few years after the Archon War subsided, Qinyang decided to wreak havoc on Liyue, especially Aega and the others who never saw her heroic deeds. So that's exactly what she did. Qinyang strided through the galaxy, reaching Teyvat. The skies turned gray with 6 ruby eyes staring at the people of Liyue. The ruby eyes belonged to her beasts. The Manticore, the Phoenix, and the Boitata. They all started summoning fireballs that held great power that descended onto Liyue. She was attracting Aega out because she knew she would defend Liyue no matter the cost. The flameballs got bigger and bigger every minute. One of them even managed to carve out the tunnel of the Chasm. Aega finally arrived at the horrific scene and started asking why she is doing this. She answered back that she hates Liyue and no one respected her. Aega knew it would be useless to fight against a God as a mortal, so she did whatever Qinyang was going to order her to do. She managed to get Qinyang to stop destroying Liyue, but her attack was not over yet. Qinyang spoke out her commands and Aega was dumbfounded. There was no way she could continue to protect the people of Liyue. She would have to descend from the mortal plane and sacrifice herself for the sake of the defenseless Liyue civilians. Aega agreed to the conditions but almost everyone objected to it. Making sure anyone wouldn’t get hurt in this process, Aega created a sheer mist that pushed everyone away. Qinyang was satisfied with her choice. She raised her arm and commanded her beasts of Godfire to attack. In a mere second before Aegas descent, Yingyue ran over, hugging tight. When the duo left the mortal world, they too were given another chance at life, a better one. Qinyang shortly left, needing no more use of those “pathetic” humans. Since then, Aega and Yingyue have been ruling the Moon hand in hand everyday, creating their own world.
Everyone knew that Yingyue and Aega loved staring at the Moon on their anniversary. So because of this, the people of Liyue created a festival dedicated to them: Lantern Rite. During this festival, the people of Liyue would eat Moons Cakes with ornate symbols and designs on the top, and write their prayers of Aega and Yingyue on the lanterns and let them go into the mesmerizing night sky. Every Lantern Rite, Aega and Yingyue would send a fragment of their soul down that dressed the regular civilians to Liyue to watch its progression and visit the vendors.
When Aega left, she secured and promised the people an unyielding protection from Qinyang if she ever decided to strike again. But the spell had a special condition. The barrier shall stay upon and protect Liyue from harm but only for as long as the Crystal of Divinity shall remain constant. When she reached the Moon, she used the remaining power left of her banishment spell and decided to protect her family and people. This spell was very fragile and weak. It would only hold them up for one thousand Moons. Hearing the news that her “nemesis” was the ruler of the Moon, she felt resentment. Qinyang once again decided to make a plan to wreak havoc on Liyue, but she first had to figure out how to destroy the barrier. She started off her plan by sending Taiyun, her faithful servant, to destroy the Crystal of Divinity, which she had believed to reside in Liyue.꧂
~Sun and Moon: Crystal of Divinity~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Chapter 1~
Descendants of The Night
When her Master decided to let Yue Tu handle the transportation process, Kiyan already knew things would go wrong. Something always went wrong when Yue Tu was involved in it, whether he forgot an important step or got distracted with something else. But her Master was the one who asked her to go on this mission so now she’ll do her best to uphold the task she was given. Yue Tu had completed the transportation process rather scarily quick.
“We’re ready to go!” Yue Tu said.
“Sigh, ok. You didn’t mess it up, right?” Kiyan questioned.
“Nope! I’m sure everything is correct!” Yue Tu confidently answered back.
They got ready for takeoff and made final preparations. They waved goodbye to their Masters and closed the door of the spaceship. The ride to Liyue was boring, but Yue Tu had his toys so he was distracted the entire time. This gave Kiyan free time to continue to plan their trip without any distractions.
“Uhhh, this doesn’t look like Liyue,” Kiyan said shortly later.
Kiyan was expecting golden plains with sandbearer trees or mountains that covered the horizon. Instead, they were in a prairie with lush green grass and a lake in the middle.
Kiyan berated Yue Tu for the next 5 minutes.
“This is why we should’ve let Master Yingyue navigate. Now we’re lost in the middle of nowhere,” Kiyan stressed,
“No we’re not!” Yue Tu argued back, as if he wasn’t the reason why they were lost.
‘So you know where we are? It seemed like you were pressing random buttons when we were on the globe,” Kiyan pointed out,
“I was! But we aren’t lost!” Yue Tu excused,
Kiyan lifted an eyebrow, “So, where are we then?”
“Umm, I was hoping you could figure that out?”
She slapped her face in agitation, “Let’s just figure out where we are..”
After taking a closer look at her surroundings, it was pretty easy to tell where they were. Thankfully, they weren’t too far from Liyue. There was a statue of the Seven in the middle of the lake. When she swam to it, she could recognize the features as Barbatos, the Anemo Archon as well as the God of Freedom. That meant they were in Mondstad and if she remembered properly, Starfell lake was the only place in Mondstadt where there was a statue of the Seven in the middle.
“Yue Tu! Where’s the bag?” She hollered out,
“Right here!” He ran over to the statue, with his small brown backpack in his hand.
Despite how small the bag was, it was enchanted so that the bag could fit anything inside as long as it wasn’t alive. Kiyan suspected it was so Yue Tu couldn’t bring home wild animals.
“Why is your bag so messy? I can’t find the map here,”
When her hand touched a candy that had melted, she grimaced and took it out. Who knows how long it’s been in there.
“What did you even put in here?” Kiyan curiously asked,
“A map? Why do you need a map?” He asked, dodging the last question,
“To plan our journey. If I don’t, you’re going to go run off again,”
“Ehhhh, why would you assume that? I only do that because I’m bored,”
“Which is all the time. This mission is important, we already wasted time by landing in the wrong spot. We should’ve been in the Guili plains by now,” Kiyan continued to spit facts in front of Yue Tus' face.
Taking a look at the map, it seemed like there was a path from Starfell Lake that led straight to Liyue Harbor. Perfect, they should be able to get there in a few days. Yue Tu continued to complain as Kiyan marked down important spots on the map,
“What are we even trying to do? I know I asked Master Aega if I could come with you, but she didn’t tell me anything about the mission,” Yue Tu said to Kiyan,
She sighed, putting down the map to explain, “Recently, there have been rumors about Qinyang being more active these past months. She has always been someone with malicious thoughts so we kept a close eye on her. Since she hasn’t actually done anything yet, we couldn’t make any moves against her. Master Aega wasn’t certain what exactly she was planning until we got the notice that one of Qinyang’s people was sent to Teyvat. Now that she’s made the first move, our mission is to find out what her plan is and if it's possible; stop it from happening,” Kiyan explained rapidly.
Yue Tu was wide-eyed, “The same Qinyang that almost burned down Liyue?!”
Kiyan nodded, “Yep,”
He gasped, suddenly aware of how important the mission he was sent on was.
With newfound determination, he proclaimed loudly, “I promise I won’t get distracted on this trip! So let’s hurry to Liyue now!”
“Alright, let me finish mapping out our trip then we can go,”
He nodded aggressively, “Ok, I’ll go check out what cool stuff there is here. Tell me when you’re done.” He placed down a token in the shape of a rabbit before running off.
“...”
When Kiyan was done, she picked up the token and examined it. Was it some sort of communicator or would it send a signal to Yue Tu telling him to come back? She turned it around and saw a small button on the back, like a small rabbit tail. She pressed it, hoping it would do something.
“Oof!” The token had disappeared and in its place was Yue Tu, who was sitting on the floor holding a basket filled with plants she had never seen before. “Ouch… I’m never doing that again…” The token Yue Tu had given her was a teleportation device that would teleport him back to Kiyan when she pressed the button. A bit extreme but knowing Yue Tu, he would’ve gotten distracted on his way back somehow.
She lifted him up from the ground and patted away any dirt on his pants.
“What plants did you collect?” They began walking on the path that was paved around to the lake.
He beamed, excited to talk about his short adventure, “Some Calla Lilies, Valberries, Sweet Flowers, and mint that I found walking around,” he kindly shared,
When he was done talking, Kiyan informed him of their first destination, “Our first stop is Mondstadt. We need to pick up some supplies and gather some information,”
Confused, Yue Tu asked, “Aren’t we already in Mondstadt?”
She rolled her eyes, “I meant the city, obviously,”
“Really?! How long are we staying there? Will there be lots of people there? Can we try out the food? I heard the Sweet Madame is really delicious, and they have this dessert called Mint Jelly! Ooo, does that mean we’re passing through Whispering Woods? Can I collect the Lampgrass there?”
Being bombarded with questions, Kiyan ignored them all.
“We’re staying there for a day, 3 days MAXIMUM,” Kiyan said while accentuating the last part.
Mondstadt’s terrain felt peaceful, like a paradise you would see in your dreams. The light breeze would blow through every once in a while for a refreshing feel. It felt like they were taking a stroll and not traveling across 2 whole nations. Passing through Whispering Woods was calm as well. The Sunlight would filter through the trees, scattering its light to create a peaceful atmosphere. Kiyan didn’t have positive feelings about the Sun but she could admit that it does its job properly, even if Qinyang was the one ruling. Despite being a forest, there were no monsters besides the occasional slimes that were easy to defeat. Yue Tu made sure to pocket every slime condensate that it dropped. Kiyan would’ve expected there to be more monsters hiding in the trees but she guessed the army here did a good job clearing them out.
When they arrived at the bridge that led into the city, Yue Tu almost ran straight in if Kiyan wasn’t there to restrain him. Sometimes, she felt like she had to babysit him.
“We can’t just rush in, there might be some procedure that travelers and merchants have to follow. This isn’t Liyue, where we can waltz in with our connection to our Masters.”
“So do we have a plan?”
Kiyan thought about it for a minute, “We could pretend to be merchants..”
Yue Tu agreed, despite how stupid it sounded. He didn’t mind stupid as long as it was fun or delicious. So they came up with a plan to get into Mondstadt undetected. ꧂
~Chapter 2~
Starfell Valley Journaling: Winds of Afar
To get inside the city, Kiyan and Yue Tu decided to pretend to be
siblings who ran away from home to become merchants. Yue Tu pitched in the idea to be a mother and son duo but Kiyan scrapped that idea away. She was too young to have a child with her appearance and even if she wasn’t, she didn’t want it to be Yue Tu. But they didn’t have anything they could pretend to sell, so how could they pretend to be merchants? It was simple, they had an enchanted bag that could fit anything inside. With Yue Tu’s obsession of collecting every herb and plant he saw, they could pretend to sell whatever he had collected on his way here. Kiyan thought it was a pretty good idea but he still thought it was dumb.
While walking across the bridge to get to the entrance, they scared away a group of pigeons that were eating the bread a little boy was throwing.
As they walked away, the little boy began shouting at them, “What’re you doing!! You’re scaring the pigeons away!”
They paused in their steps, Kiyan turned to the little boy and said, “They’ll come back soon,” she comforted him,
The little boy looked upset, “They do come back usually… But what happens if one day they leave and never come back?” Suddenly, he began to sniffle, “Just like daddy…”
Kiyan was so shocked she didn’t know what to say. Yue Tu started laughing hysterically before calming down and patting the little kid’s back.
“It’s ok, I’m sure they’ll come back unlike your dad. Birds are more loyal to their feeders,” He reassured the kid, hoping he would calm down.
Kiyan spoke up, “We should get going now,”
“You’re right! Bye kid, see you again later!”
When they were in front of the gate, two knights who were guarding the city greeted them, “Welcome to Mondstadt, strange yet respectable travelers! Please state your identity and intended destination. The Knights of Favonius are here to ensure your safety,” they requested,
Kiyan replied to them, ready to tell the story she and Yue Tu came up with, “Thank you, me and my… brother, we are here because we wanted to sell our goods in this wonderful city,”
One of the knights nodded, “Alright, can we inspect your goods? We need to make sure they’re up to standard according to the law,” the knights asked,
Kiyan nudged Yue Tu to open his pouch. It seemed like he was frozen in place, wide-eyed in front of the knights.
Suddenly, he blurted out, “Have you ever beaten a Nightmare hound before? You look pretty strong!”
“What?”
Kiyan nudged Yue Tu harder this time, “Apologies, just ignore him, my brother asks a lot of random questions sometimes. He’s going to show you our goods now, right?” As she said the last sentence, she turned to Yue Tu, smiling ominously.
“Yep! Yep!” Afraid for his life, Yue Tu hurried and opened his pouch to show to the knights.
When the knight continued to take out plants out of the seemingly never-ending bag, he subconsciously asked, “Where does this bag even end?”
Yue Tu replied enthusiastically, “It doesn’t! I put an enchantment on it so it never runs out of space!”
“What?” the knights said with a confused look,
“Yeah! It’s pretty cool if you ask me, but Master Aega can do wayyy cooler things than me,” he kept blurting,
Kiyan spoke up before he accidentally revealed even more information, “Ahem, can we get our pouch back? Since you already checked, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with our goods.”
The knight’s partner, who was standing on the other side of the gate, answered, “Your goods are all up to standard,”
He saluted them, “We hope you enjoy your stay in Mondstadt, I recommend Good Hunter if you need a place to eat.” The knight handed back their pouch and added on to his partner’s comment, “You should check out Flora’s shop too, she sells flowers so she might be willing to buy yours. It’s the first shop you’ll see when you walk in,” they suggested,
Kiyan and Yue Tu waved goodbye at the knights, “Bye! Thanks for your suggestions!”
“Let’s visit the flower shop first! We could sell these plants for some extra Mora!” Yue Tu eagerly said, wanting another opportunity to talk to someone else.
Kiyan grabbed Yue Tu’s collar before he could run off again, “We don’t need the extra Mora, our Masters’ gave us enough Mora for this mission.”
After a few attempts of Kiyan pulling Yue Tu away from the flower shop, she decided to give in and just let him do what he wanted. She talked with some locals for help until one of them gave her the idea to ask the Adventurer’s Guild.
“Katheryne’s the receptionist, she’s the one who organizes everything. All you have to do is tell her your commission and wait for someone to accept it.”
“Thank you for your help.”
“No problem! And good luck getting to Liyue Harbor.”
At first glance, the receptionist at the Adventurer’s Guild seemed pretty normal, until Kiyan talked with her. It was off putting how everything she said seemed automated, like a robot. And how Katheryne didn’t move at all during the entire conversation except a few hand gestures every once in a while.
“Ad astra abyssosque! Welcome to the Adventurer’s Guild!”
“Hi, my… brother and I need to get to Liyue quickly, could we get any assistance?”
“Of course, over there, not too far, is the Knights of Favonius headquarters. I’m sure someone over there would like to assist you,” she said in a solemn tone.
“Really?! There are more people there?!” Yue Tu blurted,
Yue Tu grabbed Kiyans hand and started running over there.
The headquarters was really big. But very small compared to the Jade Palace. They walked in to notice a tall lady with blonde hair.
“Hello!!!!” Yue Tu said,
“Oh, hello there, unseen Travelers!” she replied back.
“How can the Knights of Favonius assist you today?” she asked.
“Um…” Kiyan was thinking if she should ask for assistance to find the crystal or go to Liyue. After a few seconds of contemplating, she said;
“Have you heard of the Crystal of Divinity?”
Sure enough, the lady hasn’t. She offered to provide them with someone to look for it, if it was so valuable.
“My name’s Jean. I’ll try to assist you as much as I can. Can I please get your names?”
“My name is Yue Tu!!! And I love candy, flowers, making medicine, and--”
“Yue Tu! She asked what's your name, not a whole introduction.”
They all chuckled, besides Kiyan who looked at Yue Tu ominously.“Anyways…my name is Kiyan, and this is my brother Yue Tu. Please help us find the crystal, it values most to us.”꧂

As I absolutely don't want to intrude on the game's events, past and present, I wanted to keep the nature of Guizhong's 'resurrection' (in my default verse of it) a natural phenomenon, instead of involving anyone else. It's stated within Genshin's own lore that gods never truly die, and we all know that elements never really cease to exist either. When Guizhong succumbed to death during the Archon war, the element that she had originally formed from never perished. If anything, everything always returns to dust, but she exists within that concept as she is the literal embodiment of its element. It's why it lingers at her fingertips and why her attire disintegrates into it at its ends. If so, dust cannot disintegrate any further and/or beyond itself, and so it's lingered for thousands of years. Has it possibly grown over-time, in other words does it pull more ashes into itself? All valid questions, but all in all, if it's dust, then that means that it is her.
Keeping this in mind, my concept of her returning is rather simple. As I tie them all so very strongly into their element, and considering that hers is so overbearingly present throughout Teyvat (overbearingly tragically so), it is not far fetched by any means to think that the gods could reform from their element after regaining their strength within this phase of 'death' that is not ever final for them. Beyond that, I think it's incredibly dependent on the type of god that they are and what they are tied to, as we know not all of them are tied to a physical element (time, wisdom, to name two examples). With Guizhong being tied to dust (and ash and chalk, with Albedo noting the significance of in the creation of life in his character story), I think it may be easier for her to do so, as long as she's capable of, in essence, using something as an energy battery. Let me get to that, and the timing of her return.
While I had originally decided on the Moonchase Festival, due to its correlation to the moon, or specifically, the full moon; I was a little silly and entirely forgot one monumental detail about Lantern Rite. The detail is as follows:
Lantern Rite is a festival in Liyue celebrated on the first full moon of the year and lasts for five days.
What is more symbolical than two of Liyue's founders to be tied to the new year in one way or another; a nation that celebrates its traditions and honors its forebears as it does? But outside of that, this doesn't come without inherent reasons for her directly as well. To reform as she does, especially to redraw into an appearance that perished long ago; it wouldn't be as simple as putting one's mind to it; one would, additionally, likely need a separate body of energy to generate the power needed to accomplish this. Again, as I repeatedly note in metas (see her character page), I firmly believe that HYV has intentionally tied her very strongly to the moon, and so this is what I believe to function as her 'battery'. Especially when it's at its most significant in both power and symbolical importance (the faith/belief from humanity): a year's first full moon.
Remember the lone glaze lily that overlooks Liyue Harbor? It would be occurring on that cliffside, not chosen out of any notion of romanticism per se, but simply because of how it's one of the 'items' that she has always had such an inherently strong tie to (as we know, when she passed, the glaze lilies dwindled in number significantly), much more so than any other. Not only that, but Liyue Harbor represents the area that houses most of the people that are descendants of those that once lived in the Guili Assembly, who were in part, her people. That is another tie, for humanity was always exceedingly important to her. Beyond that, from the cliff side there is a fully unobstructed view of the moon even before it reaches its apex as it rises in the east.
And in the midst of this, as the moon dims when she's drawing energy from it, seeming a little less luminous than any other full moon throughout the year (but nothing too odd or inherently noticeable), the flecks gather into a form, one recognizable to anyone who knew her in days long passed. I can see it taking many hours, and at its peak, it's a rush of wind that's caused by the whirl of them, and the more the moon dims, the brighter the form held within the flecks becomes, and the fuller and clearer it is: the same garments, the same hair, the same sleeves. She re-manifests into a solid and corporeal form as she once was. This would, however, leave her drained of lot of her power for possibly weeks, but ultimately, she would return to how she was, as they all are.
#meta. [ her manuscripts still lie unfinished in her abode. the blank pages give one cause for contemplation on what might have been. ]#v: present. [ all wrapped up in a city that has existed for so many moons to date. all these things: they are why people chase the moon. ]

Hello! I’m new to your blog, and I really adore your art style! The hatching in it looks so pretty!! ^^
I saw in your bio that you like Genshin rarepairs, and I’m curious, which ones do you like? The only Genshin rarepair I like at the moment is Bennett and Chongyun, but it’d be cool to learn of some others. Anyway, thank you for your time! I look forward to seeing more of your art :D
I can pretty much enjoy any rarepair you throw at me! I think Chongyun mistaking Bennett's bad luck for evil spirits is funny but also really wholesome haha. I would have to say my favorite rarepair is Chongyun/Xiao. They're both really similar in which they go after evil spirits but they're also opposite in terms of Xiao's negative karmic debt and Chongyun's positive yang energy =)
Some other ones I really like are Yanfei/Ganyu/Xiao (just because they're all adeptus one way or another), Keqing/Xiangling (because of the Moonchase Festival event even though I wasn't playing at the time) Xingqiu/Albedo (classic author x illustrator trope), Shinobu/Yoimiya (day mode and night mode), I could go on, I'm not even kidding haha. I just really enjoy imagining how rarepair dynamics would work out, like I literally pair up Chongyun and Wanderer just for the fun of it.
Thank you for your kind words, shading is definitely one of my favorite parts when it comes to traditional drawing. And also thank you for asking! ♡ I rarely talk about my favorite rarepairs, so this was a very nice change of pace. Feel free to ask me anything else! =D

I agree with bloo's answer here, and I'd like to add my thoughts as well!
With all the memory/history/time shenanigans that we've encountered so far in recent lore, it further solidified my thoughts on events: events might be "stuff that the Traveler only experiences when they are at a certain place at a certain alternative point in time."
Just because some lore is locked behind limited-time events doesn't automatically mean they'll become irrelevant in the future. It might only just be a matter of how early the Traveler got to access certain information.
An example of this is Unreconciled Stars:
Players who haven't played Unreconciled Stars only get a Scaramouche intro (with the huge fancy text and Fatui logo and all) during the Inazuma archon quest.
Players who have played Unreconciled Stars got the Scaramouche intro during the event. And in the Inazuma archon quest, Scaramouche tells the Traveler, "Barely two words in and you already look like you want me dead."
There was a tiny dialogue option difference in Mona's story quest depending on whether or not you first met her in Unreconciled Stars. Basically it was just "oh yeah I remember you", something like that!
Players who haven't played Unreconciled Stars will see Dottore as the first Fatui character that brought up the fake sky, but those who have played will know that Scaramouche knows this too. He also speculated that the Jester (now revealed as Pierro) might have had a clue that they'll discover something about the fake sky in their mission. I'm quite curious to see if the main story will actually reveal that the Fatui have been researching about the fake sky all this time.
With this example in mind, it kinda reveals that the game remembers whether or not you did a certain event, which is cool and kinda "goosebumpy" if you think about it. But we still need further examples in the future to confirm this point, and there are also inconsistencies at times (e.g. some events still flash character descriptions on-screen even if you already met the character beforehand).
But still, we have yet to see how certain lore-heavy event content will be fully integrated in permanent content, like Scaramouche's involvement in the Raiden Gokaden incident (as revealed in the Irodori Festival) and Albedo's origins (which were further discussed in Shadows Amidst Snowstorms).
Nevertheless, it's also cool how some events kinda served as teasers. For instance, you don't necessarily have to know that Guoba used to be a god (which was revealed in the Moonchase Festival) to know the possible effects of gods using up all their power, since another example was also addressed in the main story (Rukkhadevata). You also don't need to know that Nahida's power over dreams and ability to intercept connections were already hinted in the 2.8 Golden Apple Archipelago, since they were discussed and showed in more detail in the Sumeru archon quests.
Festival events (excluding Irodori Festival since that was kinda major) have more like "nice to know" stuff than "need to know" stuff since the Traveler isn't really...required to attend every festival in existence HAHAH but they do have some interesting region-specific lore and cultural knowledge that we get to know more about.
Overall, it's still early as of now to conclude the validity and relevance of event lore since we've only been 2 years into the game and who knows how else hoyoverse will handle event content in the future. But event lore does provide teasers about possible permanent content at times and further expands what we currently know about Teyvat's worldbuilding. It's just a matter of how early we got to discover them, but it doesn't mean that we have to know them right away.
Genshin is a constant waiting game, and everything we need to know will probably be revealed in due time.
lowkey it feels like even the "crucial lore" limited time events aren't meant to be taken to heart w/ the way the lore just ends up being recontextualized or retconned. like w childe searching for the electro gnosis completely being dropped, or scara's "sky is fake" spiel never being part of his character again & then recontextualized as part of dottore's character revealing that the Heavenly Principles (the sky) is a Descender (fake). limited events don't have solid lore tbh, they're semi-canon
Hey, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!
I can see why you’ve come to this conclusion. Limited time events have been a place for Genshin to establish important lore and world building, but the fact that it’s not a permanent part of the story means that new players or those who weren’t able to play during that period miss out on crucial information.
If the information and character arcs within those events aren’t permanent to the story then maybe they’re not as important as we think, or as you posit, will be retconned in some way to account for those who missed out.
I disagree with this! I do think the lore and information we get in these limited time events are important and will be touched on later in the story. I view Dottore, another Fatui Harbinger specifically, being the first to mention the false sky since Scaramouche in Unreconciled Stars as a direct reference to that event.
But why would Hoyoverse put important lore and character development in limited time events that not every player will get to experience?
My guess is a simple and perhaps obvious one: it’s a gacha game that profits off people playing daily and spending money. In order to entice people to login near daily, there has to be incentive and reward for doing so. This includes more “practical” things like all the primogems, mora, adventurer’s experience, talent mats, and more that players can receive for completing the mini-games and quests, but a huge way to entice people is by an important and gripping story that they could potentially miss out on.
I think Unreconciled Stars is so famous within the fandom despite a majority of the current players not being able to experience it first hand because it had important lore that will be touched upon again. And now when the game has a new limited time event each patch, people will scramble to play before it ends because they don’t want to miss out!
Also, limited time events have given information beyond the false sky. If the lore we learn from those is only semi-canon, that negates a large amount of knowledge we have about Teyvat. It would throw into question Albedo’s character and origins (two Dragonspine events), Kazuha and Scaramouche’s stories (Irodori Festival), and everything we learned about Teyvat and multiple characters in Summer Fantasia.
I think limited time events are just a fact (maybe feature) of a gacha game that is constantly updating and pumping out new content. It is what it is. However, I do have faith that all the lore and story beats we get in them will be addressed and fleshed out later on because the quality of storytelling in Genshin has only improved with each patch, and the false sky was finally addressed again!
I hope my perspective was useful to you!

So what might be the deal with genshin is the writers only give characters that are Travelersexual the most limelight. Thank about it.
Keqing: She gets the best treatment out of all the Liyue characters and ngl she's just a very basic tsundere workaholic.
Ayaka: Not only is she one of genshin's favorite characters (her birthday is genshin's anniversary and release date) but she's also one of the only genshin characters to:
Have an npc parent that isn't a recolored generic npc.
Has actual writing (albeit it's kind of lopsided)
Nilou: Sumeru's darling girl from what I can see. She just seems to get a pass on a lot of things.
I don't know that I really agree with that?
I'd say that out of all Liyue characters, the ones with the best treatment are Zhongli and Xiao. Keqing shared the spotlight with Xiangling in Moonchase and was the focus of Lantern Rite 2 where a lot of other characters debuted, but I still think Xiao beats her out for his presence in the Archon Quest (where she got shafted), Lantern Rite 1 (which was about Xiao, there was literally NO ONE ELSE from the playable cast), his routine appearances in Liyue events, Ganyu's quest and, most recently, the Chasm and Perilous Trail. We had some concentrated Keqing for a few months, but we haven't seen her for awhile where Xiao's been pretty consistent.
In Inazuma, Ayaka was thoroughly shafted by the Archon Quest - as was her brother, which was also the case in the Iradori Festival where Ayato was mostly off-screen and Ayaka was a bit part in More Kaedehara Lore. She only really gets consistent focus in her own quest. I'd say Ei, Yae and Kazuha get the most attention there. Ayaka got a non-NPC parent, but Kazuha got a trauma dungeon and TWO events' worth of backstory - some of which he shares with Ayaka.
I'm not sure what you mean by Nilou getting a pass on a lot of things? She barely does anything, and of the things she barely does, she didn't do anything wrong. Also... Nahida.
I think Genshin identifies which characters are the most marketable as waifus and pushes them in merch and advertising, but it also just has characters it likes writing more, and I think that's where Keqing vs Xiao, or Ayaka vs Ei and Kazuha, come into play.
