Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Yang, art by Leuyen Pham. First Second, 2024. 9781250908261. 352pp.
Val has a year to find true love, or Saint Valentine wants her heart. (Their friendship started off as an imaginary friend / real friend sort of situation back when he presented as a winged cherub, but later he appears to her as a creepy old spirit). The complications: Val's sad father, who told her a huge lie; her grandmother, a pushy but hilarious woman who always wants to feed Val and take her to church; and a super cute guy who likes her but doesn't really seem to want to be her boyfriend. Plus that guy has an awkward cousin, whom she once embarrassed (or something) with a Valentine. Along for the ride is Bernice, Val's friend who dates lots of boys and draws on her shoes. There's a ton about lion dancing in the book, which Val gets good at. Scenes of lion dancing, along with the rest of the graphic novel, prove that Pham is one of the best artists working in comics.
I suppose I should no longer be surprised that I enjoy YA romances occasionally. This is my favorite of the year, a book I plan to gift to many folks on my list.

The Search was realistic since she had been canonically mistreated horribly in the institution as GeneYang confirmed (something would be interesting to watch too). But her whole Scooby-Doo scheme in S&S was just so fucked up. It's ruined the whole rational girl thing. Does that even make Azula sound as if she act rationally?? Everyone knows that was stupid plot.
I didn’t think the plot was THAT bad but to each his own. I understand the methods behind her madness–”There’s a method to my madness”– as I have explained before. She did infiltrate the New Ozai Society, tricking Ukano that she was on his side to get Ozai back on the throne. When she was not. She was using him to help Zuko and at the same time stripped Ukano of his resources (money), controlled him and when the time was right exposed him. It’s interesting that Zuko didn’t expose her to the Capital when he easily could have…he hasn’t given up on her yet it seems based off that logic. He is desperate to help Azula and has seen the change within her…can’t wait to see where that goes.

청소년들에게 만화는 매우 효율적인 교육 도구이다. 왜 이 멋진 도구가 여전히 우리나라에서는 저평가 받는지 안타까울 따름이다. #TED #graphicrecording #tedmanhattan #geneyang #cartoon #낙서 #doodle #kimkiyoung #sketchnotes

So I just read The Shadow Hero by Gene Yang and Sonny Liew for the second time now.  Honestly, its one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time.
In a nutshell, Gene and Sonny tell the story of the very first Asian American Superhero, The Green Turtle!  It was such a fun and rewarding read.
Gene and Sonny make light of many of the issues that surrounded a Golden Age hero of color.  And do it in a fun light hearted way that still teaches lessons.
I really can’t recommend this book enough.
So I had to throw together this quick sketch.  Wait’ll you see how Sonny draws him though.  Wow.
You can get it through amazon HERE.

Unfortunately, this world is an inherently unsafe place, so many dangers, so much to fear. No matter how hard we try, we can never keep our children completely safe. Better to teach them - and ourselves - to see the fear with unclouded eyes.
