Lesson 050: The Unforgiven
Genesis 50:15-17 - When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.” So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
Why did Joseph’s brothers tell such a story to Joseph after their father died? Weren’t they all at peace with each other at this point?
Let’s read together Genesis 27:41-42 and Genesis 42:21-22.
Joseph’s brothers were still wracked with guilt for how they treated Joseph, selling him into slavery, and lying to their father about everything. They were afraid Joseph was only being kind to them for the sake of their father. Now that Jacob was dead, they were afraid Joseph would finally take revenge upon them.
Why did Joseph weep when he heard their story?
Let’s read together Genesis 45:3-8 and John 11:25, 32-37.
Perhaps Joseph cried because he realized his brothers still didn’t think of him as one of them. Perhaps Joseph cried because their story brought back memories of past trauma. Perhaps he cried because he had already forgiven them, but they did not believe his words.
Let’s read together Genesis 50:18-21; Matthew 6:15; Matthew 18:35; Mark 11:25; and Romans 3:23.
Joseph did not want servants - he wanted brothers and family. Joseph once again freely forgave his brothers. He reassured them he would not retaliate against them for the wrongs they had committed against him in the past.
Why does God ask us to forgive those who sinned against us? We all have sinned against God, yet He is willing to forgive us when we confess our sins and repent. In the same way, we must follow Jesus Christ’s example in forgiveness.

I used to live here
Genesis 3:23
Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
I have never felt loved
So truly and completely encompassed
I think home does that to a person
I want to be held like my childhood home held me
I want to be comforted the way my bed used to
I want to be praised and loved and wanted
This house is the only place that wanted me
And now it doesn't
This house is now you
The mortar in it, the speckle on the wall screams your name
I have left and my pictures rot in the basement
My brothers finger burns with the old doorframes in the oven to keep you warm
I find home in other people
Lose it in others as well
But those don't force me to abandon them
They hold me one last time and let me go
And that still hurts like a bitch
But I hope that they at least know
And I hope that they ache with me
Our house has never ached, you never let it
As I left you held every wall, yes every brick in place so it naught move
You replaced them all
So that even the memory of me might not perceiver in them
You made this house a home for you by stripping it of me
I hope nobody has to strip themselves of me
I hope that even after we decide to part they carry me with them
I hope I last at least in inconsequential ways
I don't need a big impact
I just wanted you to remember

listening to the life of the world to come the way i analyze dreams. where when i dream, everything in the dream is me, no matter its shape. where in each song, there is no separation between the narrator and the world they experience. incomprable listening experience.
#tlotwtc#tmg#tmg posting#the narrator WAS the house also. in genesis 3:23. they used to be. what are they now

Line Upon Line Lesson 023: A Foreigner and a Visitor
Genesis 23:3-4 - Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
Sarah passed away in the land of Canaan at the age of 127 years. Abraham mourned for her and came to the sons of Heth to purchase land so that he could properly bury her.
Let’s read together Genesis 51:2; Hebrews 11:11; and 1 Peter 3:3-6.
Despite her flaws, Sarah ultimately showed herself to be a faithful and godly woman. She is cited as an example to look up to in both the Old and New Testaments.
Let’s read together Leviticus 25:23; 1 Chronicles 29:14-15; Psalm 39:12; and Hebrews 11:13-16.
Some biblical scholars have argued this passage is significant because it is a step towards the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise. Abraham, a nomadic wanderer, is setting up roots in Canaan, the land of promise for his descendants.
However, I find his admission to be “a foreigner and a visitor among you” to be the most significant part of this passage. Is Abraham telling the sons of Heth he is from Ur of the Chaldees? I don’t think so. Rather, Abraham’s words point to his recognition that his true home was in heaven. Abraham’s descendants including Moses and Abraham also acknowledged this reality. God’s people throughout the ages have also looked forward to a better heavenly country.
Let’s read together 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and Hebrews 11:39-40.
While Abraham was heaven-focused, he still lived and reacted to the present realities in life. He mourned the death of his beloved wife. However, unlike those who do not believe in God, Abraham had hope and reassurance he would see her again one day.
Friend, will you follow Abraham’s example to be heaven-focused?
