The kitchen is mostly dark and smelling vaguely of scalded milk when Rainsford hears the deliberate steps in the doorway.
"General," he says, without looking up. He knows that, if Zaroff had meant to enter without being heard, he probably wouldn't have been aware of the other man's presence until the general’s hand ghosted over his upper arm.
And so Zaroff presses gently against his shoulder, peering over it to watch the action. "I did not know you could cook, Sanger."
"I can’t." Rainsford’s voice is rough with tiredness as he stirs at the small pot on the stove. "I couldn't sleep."
"And so you decided to come down here and make- what is this, chocolate?"
"An attempt," Rainsford corrects. He peers into the steaming liquid. "It was supposed to be hot chocolate. I don’t know what it is now."
"An attempt," Zaroff agrees, smiling indulgently, and pulls the spoon from Rainsford’s hand.
Rainsford lets it go.

general zaroff should be a more popular public domain villain I think. Nothing much has been done it’s him in the 4 years he’s been public domain. Lots of potential there

I furiously made this .5 seconds after stewing in my normal feelings about this story for like three days
If it’s too blurry to the point you can’t read it uhmmmmm no it isn’t ☺️ (I have not watched the movie, I’ve only read the book 😞)

The first time I read The Most Dangerous Game, i was like half asleep and i managed to bungle reading the last part so hard that i thought Zaroff and Rainsford slept together instead of, y'know, fighting to the death
I didn't even question it I was just like, "...Alright."

Kristoph Propaganda
Known as the "coolest defense" as a lawyer, he's cool and collected, even when he's arrested for murder the first time. That's right, the FIRST time. He kills multiple people in a 7 year long gambit full of stalking, poisoning, laying traps, etc. Because he's been forging evidence to get his clients not guilty verdicts, and after someone else got involved and lost his job for it, Kristoph has been plotting to get rid of everyone who could implicate him in that whole ordeal. He murders so many people for this one goal, jeez.
Zaroff Propaganda
Bought an island and a mansion decked it out, acted like a gentleman to a shipwreck survivor, and then revealed that the man had like a single hour to run before zaroff hunted him for sport. And that he had done it before and specifically bought the island next to a common shipwreck point for Untrackable Game Sourcing reasons. I think he had a butler so Extra Gentleman point for that.

Oh, my favorite author has unexpectedly stumbled upon my secret hideaway by accidentally falling off of a boat! And now, sir, prepare yourself for continuous and enthusiastic infodumping as we delve into our shared hyperfixation, which incidentally I have constructed my entire life around! What? No, you can't leave, you'll love it here! What do you mean the way I kill people is barbaric and uncivilized and you want no part in it? You keep saying what an admirable specimen of manhood I am! I used to be nobility, you know, but I ran away because people were mean to me. Let me show you the mechanism that I designed to theme and construct and indulge my hyperfixation, which is what led you to accidentally enter my life in the first place. See? Isn't it wonderful? Now let me show you-

Zaroff: you see Rainsford, I have brought you here because I crave the most dangerous game…
Rainsford, nodding: knife monopoly
Zaroff: well I was going to grant you your freedom if you could survive 3 nights of me hunting you in the jungle, but now I’m really interested in what knife monopoly is
