Lady Oscar's flaws and weaknesses
In case someone is interested, I've written in an italian blog a small analysis of Oscar from Rose of Versailles, so I've translated it to post it here too.
Thank you for the dive into the past. To give some context, I primarily base myself on the manga because it is the original medium and, as almost always, the most complete. The original Oscar is very different from that of the anime, because the latter makes different narrative choices from the beginning. Among other things, since Oscar is not born as a protagonist but as a sidekick to Marie Antoinette, her character is initially less deep and set up differently.
Moreover, the anime has a predominantly dark and dramatic tone, but the contents have been overall very softened, especially in the edition with Italian dubbing, while the manga alternates comic moments with moments of great tragedy and violence, even very brutal for a shojo of the time. But let’s cut to the chase:
From the beginning, Oscar is characterized as a tomboy, which serves as a recurring comic element in the story. Even at the time of her birth, her father mistakes her for a boy because she screams and thrashes about like a little boy.
Tumblr media
[Oscar’s birth in volume 1 and a comic callback in volume 6]
Despite her refined and elegant appearance, she often behaves in a decidedly rude manner, spits and swears. In her character profile, the author emphasizes that she always behaves like a man and loves weapons, alcohol, occasionally going to drink in the commoners bars and that her flaw is that she is ready to start a fight.
Tumblr media
[A snippet of Oscar’s profile and a brawl from volume 3]
Another thing went a bit lost among the transpositions is that Oscar is a huge troll. She often behaves in a brazen and insolent way to mock scandals, pettiness and gossip of court life. The funniest example is when her father wants her to organize a ball to find a husband, in the anime criminally reduced to an innocent scene. General Jarjayes asks her to commission a dress from the best tailor in Paris and Oscar shows up at the ball with a flashy dress uniform complete with bell-bottom pants in '70s style. To complete the work, she spends the evening dancing and flirting with her throng of admirers, even kissing two and threatening to duel a guy she stole the girlfriend from. Priceless.
Tumblr media
[Lady Oscar happily trolling her father and her suitor Girodelle who, along with the other contenders, despair in the background in volume 6]
Moving on to more serious matters, in both versions Oscar is notoriously cool and detached, but in the manga she is less fickle, impulsive and reckless. She tends to be a risk-taker, but most of the time the risks she takes are calculated or at least justified. One of the first big examples is when she threatens Madame du Barry with her sword for trying to frame Oscar’s mother for the poisoning of a maid. In this case, she draws her sword in defense of her mother to scare du Barry, because she knows even the countess may not want it to be known what happened.
Tumblr media
[Oscar threatens Countess du Barry with her sword in volume 2]
In addition, beneath her cold exterior, she often shows herself to be emotional and quick-tempered, characteristics that come out especially during the most dramatic moments, such as the killing of the child by the Duke of Guémené, when the black knight injures André’s eye or the soldiers of the French guard want to push her to punish them.
Tumblr media
[Oscar getting furious about the extravagances orchestrated by the Duchess de Polignac in volume 4]
In the manga, Oscar does not live her military career as an imposition, but rather as a source of pride. Also for this reason, she shows from a very young age to be competitive, ambitious and even a bit arrogant. In fact, she is the one who personally requests the assignments of the capture of Jeanne de Valois or the arrest of the black knight, thanks to which she reaches the rank of brigadier general and, if she had not let the latter escape, she would have advanced at least one more rank. Moreover, in the comic she decides to join the French guard not to get away from Fersen, but to prove that she can make it even outside the privileged environment of the royal guard.
Tumblr media
[An adorable little Oscar who already thinks big in volume 1]
Since Oscar, like all nobles, has always lived a privileged and protected existence, especially at the beginning she is naive and ignorant about the conditions of the world and the people around her. It is also for this reason that she is sometimes excessively indulgent towards Marie Antoinette and tends not to take into account André’s feelings for her, even though she knows he loves her.
Tumblr media
[A moment of tragic realization on Oscar’s part in volume 5]
Finally, Oscar has an ambivalent relationship towards her femininity. While this does not represent a flaw in itself, it remains one of her major weaknesses that makes her suffer and rends her very vulnerable. While she is in every way a woman, she occupies a place that in a very rigid and hierarchical society is traditionally reserved for men and she wants to be treated like a man. For this reason, she often shows to consider feelings as something exclusively feminine to reject. This side of her identity cracks when Oscar’s expectations and desires as a woman and those as a soldier clash with each other, such as when she falls in love with Fersen and for the first time in her life she dresses as a woman for him or when her father wants to push her to retire from the army and marry Girodelle. This would force her in each case to give up an important part of her life and identity. Only at the end does she understand, after André dies and she stays by his side instead of returning immediately to the battlefield, in the scene that I find the most touching in the manga, that her feelings do not make her a “woman”, but human.
Tumblr media
[Oscar crying over André’s death in volume 8, much better than that crap of episode 39]
I want to close by saying that this is a manga and a character that I love very much also and especially for its shortcomings and very human imperfections. It is these gaps that push her to mature beyond the boundaries of her golden cage and to break down the social and personal barriers that prevent her from living her life not simply as a man or a woman but as herself.
It is by navigating her complex and difficult feelings, touching firsthand the despair of ordinary people and gaining the respect of her rebellious subordinates that she understands that she is only a small cog in the great wheel of History and thus comes to choose which side of it she really wants to be on.

what is your ideal ornate sissy armor setup to put Tha Girls in. how many pettis
first of all as many pettis as humanly possible! that's a given. but i ended up thinking about this quite a bit so you get a more in depth answer.
princess nettle ( @warmcoals ) is, obviously, a princess type. she's very sensitive and a bit dainty and capricious but she has a secret tomboy side behind the many layers of sissy frills. she can be prone to shyness but does very much love to be the centre of attention, as expected of a princess. she's very smug and has a bit of a superiority complex as princesses do and one of her bigger charm points is the way she gets flustered when that smugness comes back to bite her if she's proven wrong or outclassed. she has a bit of a temper as well and though she tries her best to hide it, her not-so-secret rage slips out every now and then. she does, much to her embarrassment, adore being babied and fawned over but only if you know the very specific ways in which she responds to it. she's the eternal baby sister and for somebody as self aware as she is it drives her nuts. frequently she can be heard saying "well when IM queen...." and other such indignant things. with all of that said she's still very capable, intelligent, and emotionally mature for her age. as fine an heir to the frown as you could hope for and then some.
her outfit inspirations are
gradriel from princess crown
eclair from la pucelle tactics
ymir from queens blade (both versions)
jelanda from valkyrie profile (not pictured)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
royal knight jennifer ( @ahoneesan ) is the eldest sister, captain of the royal guard not by nepotism but through sheer skill. she is a handsome princely woman who comes off as somewhat serious at first glance due to her responsibility but upon further inspection you'll find that she's not unlike a dog in many ways. she's eager to please to a fault and easily swayed by praise and affection. if you know the right words to say she'll all but roll over and beg like a puppy. as such, she has earned the somewhat teasing nickname "royal hound". but much like a hound she is loyal, dedicated, and full of love. she will go to just about any lengths to please the ones she loves, especially her precious little sister, dearest princess nettle. still, her princely charm and elegance has made her quite popular with the ladies and as such it's not uncommon to see her politely fending off noblewomen at royal events, practically hiding behind the queen or princess like a scared dog. much like nettle she has a secret side to her that contrasts her brave tomboy front... truthfully she's a bit of a sissy and though she loves her princely attire she adores being a frilly feminine sissy dressed in lace and elegant jewelry. beneath her tomboy exterior beats the heart of a dainty, sensitive woman.
her outfit inspirations are:
lady oscar françois de jarjayes from rose of versailles (obvious)
female armamentalist from dragon quest
princess sapphire from princess knight
agrias oaks from final fantasy tactics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
well. not sure if that's what you were asking for but! i had fun anyway so i hope you like it too. i suppose i could also do one for non gf mutuals and friends, a general uniform for knights and princess and princess knights but you'll have to give me a minute on that. i will not be doing one for myself so if either of my girls want to do that it's up to them... i would feel sheepish writing my own lol

Question for the culture because I trust your insight:
What does one (me) watch when they're really yearning to watch RGU but in too low of an emotional state to handle it at the moment?
ok. so. many answers and i'm not going to claim to be a total expert here. but hears a few nearby points in my web:
ROSE OF VERSAILLES: a clear stylistic predecessor to utena, this is a historical shojo starring Marie Antoinette and og girlprince Oscar François de Jarjayes. I'm not anywhere near done reading it myself, but so far it's taken a pretty lighthearted tone and is generally concerned with the court melodramas and romances. it's cute. it's fun.
SAILOR MOON: needs very little introduction. it's fun, but honestly i haven't seen much of the ikuhara seasons (3-5). what i have seen i was quite drunk for. i really love season 1 though. currently cassie and i are slogging through the horrible elf arc of season 2. it's a classic for a reason even if at times it bleeds a very regressive edge.
REVUE STARLIGHT: A much more recent show, obviously in the shadow of utena but still very good. If you need a good dose of sword girls this one's got your back. A group of girls take part in a secret musical fight club. It's short and sweet. And the follow up movie has some really really good parts. It has some dramatic moments but it's not gonna wrench you like quite like utena.
GUNDAM: WITCH FROM MERCURY: A recent Gundam series, pulling a lot of clear utena influence in its premise with the dueling-game-for-the-bride, placed into a mech-battle setting. I think season 2 was weak but it's still pretty good. Heavier on violence and more politicking going around here.... not necessarily light viewing.

there is also a lot to say about the implication that general jarjayes only decided to pull a switcheroo and insist oscar get married and start acting like a woman when he was the driving force behind this the whole time was because oscar took a far less prestigious position w/ the french guard rather than remaining in versailles. something something if he can't be successful as my son she's going to be successful as my daughter

I'm bored...
Here
An unabridged guide yuri history
Yuri yuri yuri yuri. Cute girls being gay, my beloved. But where does it come from?
Before the yuri we know and love today, there was Class S. Class S, also known as S kankei, is a subset of Japanese literature that popped up at around early twentieth century. They showcased "affectionate friendship" between women.
These literature reflected the views of wlw relationships at that time, as something that is normal and natural for young girls to go through, but something they need to grow out of eventually. (It's just a phase mentality). Its roots can still be seen in present-day yuri (ahem sayaka's backstory).
All of this is just a backdrop for what came next.
We skip forward in time to the 1970s, when manga depicting homoeroticism began to popping up all around the place. This is the birth of our beloved yuri as we know today. All these early yuri works can be attributed to the Year 24 Group.
The Year 24 Group are not only responsible for yuri, but also yaoi and for revitalizing shoujo manga publishing in general. Their works were so influential that it brought shoujo manga into it's golden age.
What in the 50s and 60s was just simple stories marketed to young school girls became A LOT more complex and works begin to explore themes of psychology, gender, sexuality and whatnot. (They need an essay all to themselves, I will blab about them again when I'm bored maybe)
Some of the notable members of the Year 24 Group in regards to yuri would be Ryoko Yamagishi and Riyoko Ikeda. Ok, let's focus on Riyoko Ikeda alone for a sec, their most famous work, The Rose of Versailles, is set in pre-revolutionary France and is about Marie Antoinette and Oscar François de Jarjayes, and it is of course, very gay. Not the most relevant but thought it was interesting enough to plop it here.
After gaining a lot of popularity, yuri got itself its own magazine!!! Yuri Shimai was yuri anthology magazine, which ran only from June 2003 to November 2004. But it was succeeded by Comic Yuri Hime in July 2005. Which is still being serialized today! All of our beloved yuri (that isn't self-published) comes from this magazine.
Side Note: One of the first stories to be serialized in Comic Yuri Hime is kisses, sighs, and cherry blossom pink, written by Morinaga Milk. They deserve an essay to their own. I will most certainly gush about them in the near future. This is a warning.
Comic Yuri Hime got itself a sister magazine in Comic Yuri Hime S, which was targeted at a young male audience.. But it did not last long as it merged back with Comic Yuri Hime in 2010. The only reason I bring this up is because YuruYuri was serialised that magazine.
Which brings us to present da- Wait! Did we skip over something? We did! We forgot to mention the revolutionary girl herself, Utena Tenjou. Well, not necessarily forget. No words I can use can properly explain how influential Revolutionary girl Utena was and still is. Someone who is more of an Utena expert can cover it's speciality.
Which FINALLY brings us to present day, where yuri is still a relatively niche genre. But it has VERY dedicated fan base and idiots like me who write out it's history for funsies ^-^. There might even be a religion around it, who knows,,,
If you read through all of this... what is wrong with you?/lh.

I know you dont play hsr. but what are your thoughts on gallagher and argenti
Tumblr media
Prefacing this with the fact that idk anything about these guys. I think gallagher is mid, i like the harness situation he has going on and like... The anime stubble looks stupid but i appreciate the effort like ok attempts have been made. His hair looks a bit stupid too but i appreciate the mullet. The fact that he's wearing one fingerless glove and one glove that looks like a butler's is hilarious. 6/10 amusing design his color scheme is stupid though
Tumblr media
As for argenti i'm gonna be honest i kind of hate his ass because he reminds me of touga kiryuu from rgu design wise like... Red hair lighter hair streak red rose motif... Gagging. Sorry i know it's unfair but it's my honest gut reaction. In general i tend to like knight designs but i have a bit of disdain for this guy both for the aforementioned reason and for the fact that he's trying so hard to be Oscar François de Jarjayes even though kaeya already did it first and did it better ⬇️
