Honey's hands carried a dim, blue light as the frostbite spell finally came to light.

"Good job!" Lucien cheered her on.

She frowned. "No it's not. I've been trying at this for hours and this is all I've got." The few fractals of ice floating in her grasp fizzled in place, barely kept alive. Honey glared at them, as if trying to will them to stay, but they only melted once more in her hands, leaving only little droplets of water behind.

"Hey, this is still good progress," Lucien encouraged. "We'll keep working on it."

Honey's anger now was redirected from the spell to Lucien. "You're so mean! I miss Auntie Filly's teaching."

Lucien, who by this point had been trying his hardest to be a kind teacher and give lots of positive reinforcement, was both confused that the message was lost and hurt that his efforts were failing so tremendously. It's not like he was lying. He really did believe in her!

He heard a loud laugh from where Ophelia sat in the common area as she made no effort to conceal her amusement. "Love you, Honey," she shot back with a grin.

"Ignore her," Beatrice said as she left her seat and walked up to the cryomancer. "She's an ass."

Lucien stared at her incredulously. The fact that she so flagrantly spoke about her own coven leader within her earshot was still baffling to him, even after hearing each of the women here refer to her in similar terms. If he didn't know of Ophelia's well respected status, within both the coven and the Reach as a whole, he'd never have guessed it.

"What you're doing wrong," Beatrice explained simply, "is assuming she needs to be treated like glass. She's a tough kid."

"Of course she is! That's why I'm telling her I believe in her and that she can do this."

Beatrice looked at him as though she were reading a complicated riddle. "You're a strange one, you know."

He seems to get that a lot for some reason. Mostly from the women of the coven, he realized.

"Stop patronizing her then. Tell her what she's doing wrong. Sugarcoating just makes it seem like you think she's weak."

"What? That... makes a lot of sense, actually. Considering everything. You never were a... gentle people."

"We don't have the time to be." With that, Beatrice took a seat on the ground, meeting her daughter at eye level. "Walk me through your process."

"I'm thinking cold thoughts," she explained. "Like eating a frozen treat or playing in the snow. Then I think about—" she scrunched her face and made a grasping motion with her hands—"controlling the ice and making it do what I want. But then it doesn't do it right away, and it makes me mad."

Then, Beatrice turned to Lucien. "What is she doing wrong?"

Lucien thought on it a moment, not because he didn't see the issue, but because he wanted to present it in the right way so as to not get his point lost in translation again. "You're putting too much fire behind it. You're using anger and passion to control the ice, but those are fiery emotions, so it's only natural for the ice to melt. You need to be more calm and collected. Trust that the ice will follow your guidance without being forced into it."

Honey nodded slowly as the words sank in. For a moment, she reflected on it with a thoughtful pout on her face. When his gaze turned to Beatrice, she gave him a nod of approval.

At least he was on the right track as a teacher. The real test, however, came when Honey brought her hands back up and once again focused her magicka into her hands.

This time, the spell lit up faster and brighter than before. Honey pointed her hands forward then pushed slightly to shoot.

Instead of the small, sharp fractals of ice that she meant for, however, there was a stream of soft white snow from her hands. She held the spell for a moment in surprise, then stopped it and pulled her hands back, looking at them in confusion. In the center of the common room was a small pile of fresh snow, an odd sight on a warm summer afternoon. The pile was already beginning to melt into the grass.

"What' s wrong this time?" She asked.

"Show me how you positioned your hands?"

Honey posed herself as she was when she performed the spell. Her hands were in a loose claw shape.

"Bring your fingers closer, and keep your hands straight," he instructed, fighting off the urge to tell her she's on the right track or that she's almost got it.

Honey did as he asked, repeating the spell once more with the slight alteration. This time, the stream of magic that shot from her hands was clearer, the little spikes of ice projecting from her hands at a high velocity.

She stopped to excitedly turn to both the adults overseeing her training. "I did it!"

"That's my girl!" Beatrice brought up her hands to give Honey a hug, which the little girl happily accepted. Her mother took her hand, pressed a kiss to the back of it, then brought it up to press it against her forehead.

As the two parted, Honey turned to Lucien. He, fully expecting a hug as well, brought his arms out to welcome one, but was then quickly met with a blast of snow hitting his face.

He tried to use his hands as a shield, but his efforts were fruitless as his beard and the front of his hair were stark white by the time the spell ended. Honey giggled and ran away before he could catch her.

"Why you—get back here!" Lucien called, taking off running after her. An idea suddenly came to mind, and he too put his hands out in a loose claw and shot back at her with the same spell.

The snow hit her on the back of the neck and she screamed, somewhere between scared and delighted, then turned to him. "That's my spell!" She accused, but she still had a smile on her face as she did so.

"I taught it to you, so it's mine too," he argued back with a self satisfied grin.

"There's only one way to settle this," Honey said ominously.

"Snowball fight?"

"Death!"

"Oh, gods, that's not—"

As he spoke, he got a sudden stream of snow aimed directly at his face, and he spat out in an effort to not get himself a brain freeze.

As he struggled to get the child under control as she ran around shooting each of her covenmates with a heavy stream of snow, he realized there was no one to blame but himself for volunteering to teach her ice magic.

The Blue Stripes are Temeria's elite Special Forces Unit. Their mission is to hunt down the Scoia'tael, but in between fighting and drilling, they get up to an awful lot of shenanigans. “He looks like he’s dead,” Shorty said, poking the sleeping form of their commanding officer with a stick. “Shorty!” Silas hissed shrilly. The newbie was still scared of breaking rules and he fidgeted nervously. “What?” Shorty shrugged, “He sleeps like the dead, it’s fine. As long as he’s not actually dead, anyway.” “He’s not,” Ves, their erstwhile second in command, rolled her eyes. “He’s just fucking weird.” “Are you sure he’s okay? How can he possibly breathe like that?” Igo frowned in worry, which wasn’t surprising for the man who had accidentally become their de facto team therapist. “What he needs,” Thirteen pointed in what would have been a dramatic gesture if not for the drunken stumble, “is a goo’ pair o’ tits to bury his face in.”

Noctis looks upon him with a wicked grin, the moonlight outlining his silhouette with a fine silver and casting a shadow across his face. But the way his eyes glow, a deep and ominous magenta that cuts through the darkness, makes Ardyn think of him the great oppressing villain instead. And beside him, the ever-merciful Oracle, only smiles along sweetly.

“Wake the fuck up, grandpa. We’ve got gods to kill.”

Ardyn wakes up to a light smack on his cheek, just hard enough to leave a light sting across his face. Either he’s hallucinating or it’s just another horrid nightmare, one of the countless that have plagued him since his imprisonment in this stone tomb. How many times has he awakened to such a scene? Seemingly waking up to a voice and the sensation of another’s hands on him, only to open his eyes to ever darkness and the cold stale air? To feel the chains digging into his flesh and the holy iron piercing into his innards.

So he doesn’t bother opening his eyes, knowing there’s only disappointment should he expect anything other than silence and emptiness.

Until he hears a sigh. Until he hears a woman’s soft song.

Until the chains rattle and the stones quake, and he feels warmth ghost over his skin.

When he wakes out of his daze, there’s no pain piercing through his flesh or the ache in his bones. There’s certainly still a fatigue, yes, that weighs down his body, but the agony is no longer. Relief is an understatement, and he almost wants to cry. He doesn’t know whether to consider this a new, terribly cruel nightmare that’s given him false hope, or a dream that’s arrived as a short mercy. 

So Ardyn opens his eyes, and he thinks he sees Aera and Somnus above him. They both look younger — a funny thing, knowing he’s been imprisoned for at least a dozen years — though Aera’s hair is longer and Somnus looks far, far younger between the two of them. It’s almost cruel, considering how realistic this dream is, and some part of him wants to weep upon seeing them like this. Aera, who he knows is dead, cradling him in her arms with all the warmth of life in her skin. Somnus, who condemned him to this prison in the first place, looking upon him with genuine concern.

How Ardyn misses those days, longs for them.

“Should I smack him harder?” Somnus suggests, and Ardyn thinks that must certainly be his brother, even if the voice is different. The unease is still on his face, however, etched into the corners of his mouth and the set of his eyes. 

“Noctis, please.” Aera, despite the exasperation in her voice, is soft as always. Though the pitch is different. Has all the years robbed him of their memories, so that he can no longer remember the tone of their voices? 

Ardyn wonders what cruel power decided to have its fun with him. Giving him the illusion of freedom — chains released and iron removed — and his family and love returned to him. But the fog in his mind keeps him from going any further than that, and he doesn’t even have the mind to wonder who this Noctis is. He can’t even offer up any resistance except for weak grunts as Somnus hefts him bodily along, both staggering out the long rocky corridor that leads outside his prison.

But when he’s carried out of Angelgard, witnessing the soft lights high across the night sky and breathing in the sea salt air, his heart stops itself thrice over. The first time, it’s at the realization that this isn’t a dream but reality. The second, when he sees Somnus and Aera properly under the bright moonlight, and sees they are not Somnus and Aera after all. 

And the third, after they’ve properly introduced themselves, when they claim to herald from a time and space not too different yet wholly distinct from his own.

“I don’t think you got the memo yet,” Noctis says, stroking his chin. But he pulls his hand away and stares at it, feels for his chin again and mutters something about not being thirty anymore. 

Ardyn doesn’t really understand the notion behind that, but he really has no time to try considering he’s still trying to wrap his head around everything else that seems far more important and life-altering.

On the ride back to the coast, where he can make out the outline of a tall tower — a dead lighthouse, according to Noctis — there’s plenty of time for Ardyn to get filled in on this “memo.” It’s a fantastical story, albeit a tragic one, of a prince and his retinue travelling to meet his fiancée, only to discover his kingdom and his father have met an untimely end and that his bachelor road trip was only the beginning of a grim spiral towards death. 

It’s a story of how Ardyn, gone mad from centuries of imprisonment and betrayal of those he once loved and the gods he worshipped, promised a reckoning upon the world. 

More than half of this was going over Ardyn’s head, despite how much he wants to understand. He thinks he gets the gist of it — most of the prophecy part anyway — though some part of him is in denial that he really would become this embodiment of evil the two claim him to be.

But by the time they near the coast, he can see it. See his descent into madness from years of isolation, experimentation, fear and anger and betrayal. 

When they reach the underground dock and both Noctis and Luna help him down and across, Ardyn almost doesn’t believe them. Not because of the tales they speak, but because despite everything their Ardyn has done to them, they don’t regard him with venom or malice or a demand for retribution. Luna fetches him an extra blanket, and Noctis goes off for only a moment to return with water and unrecognizable food. 

Ardyn takes it all with gratitude anyhow, wraps the blanket around him tighter and downs the glass in one go, even if he half-expects it to be poisoned because such kindness really should not be given to someone that wanted to doom the world. 

Which makes him wonder. Which makes him realize. 

‘Ah, ’ Ardyn thinks, in resignation, ‘they’ve come to end me. Before tragedy strikes.’

It’s logical. It makes sense, far more sense than having them treat their would-be enemy with such tenderness. They probably just want the peace of mind of giving him a tranquil death, some last reprieve before sending him off. 

Still, that’s kind of them. It’s far better than spending centuries dying and dying and dying in a rotten tomb.

“So yeah. Long story short, we got the short end of the stick,” Noctis sums it up, taking the seat across from Ardyn. “You and me were in for some double-suicide thing because Bahamut said so, Luna died because you were being an asshole —”

“In Ardyn’s defense,” Luna interrupts, voice awfully mild despite the fate she suffered — or would suffer — at future(?) Ardyn’s hand, “I would die regardless due to the covenants. And this Ardyn isn’t quite yet the same one we knew.”

“ Yet. Anyway, and if I didn’t manage to kill you? Dragon dick had a back-up plan to zombie-fy Luna and literally vaporize the entire world. So yeah, good-bye humanity that I was apparently supposed to save.”

“And… now?” Ardyn asks, hesitant, then motions a hand to himself, “You've come to nip the bud, I assume.”

Noctis stares at him, then widens his eyes just a fraction in surprise. He turns to Lunafreya, who shares the same expression, and they exchange silent words and sweeping eyebrows. It doesn't take long for them to separate, when Luna turns her head and hides her smile behind her hand, her stifled laughter still evident despite her efforts. Noctis is much the same, though he doesn't even try hiding his face. 

Ardyn isn't as amused as either of them however, and his confusion must show because Noctis quickly recovers and goes for an explanation. 

"No, gods, no. I can't believe you — what would be the point of us getting you out of Angelgard in the first place? There are quicker ways to kill a man y'know. Don't tell me you were this naive back in your day." Noctis shakes his head, but the amusement in his eyes remain. 

Ardyn still doesn't get it. If they're not here to kill him, to stop him before this foretold darkness comes to pass, then why are they here? The prophecy must still exist, the Scourge is still within him — he can feel it crawling and slithering underneath his skin — and no doubt the gods would have his soul banished if they can help it. And no doubt that they'll use every little trick they can.

"I don't understand," Ardyn says slowly, wondering what they would possibly need him for if not for his death. "If you're not here for me, then for what have you come here for?"

Samedi for V20 Lore of the Bloodlines by Mark Kelly

  Something about the Samedi illo by Marvelous Mark Kelly just works to encompass the overall feeling coming out of today’s meetings. Lots and lots of stuff was discussed, all being pushed, prodded, and pulled forward with a ton of energy.

Some highlights (basically the ones I can talk about):

1- Our Extended Media team “Amazon Explorers”, Bill Bridges and Valerie Tate, has completed the first wave of six fiction books into ebooks for sale on Amazon! That’s V20 Endless Ages, W20 Rites of Renown, M20 Truth Beyond Paradox, Curse of the Blue Nile (Mummy), The Primordial Feast (Beast), and the God-Machine Anthology (CofD).

We don’t know when Amazon will put the books live, but we’re hoping to give out links on Wednesday with our weekly sales posts. This is our first foray into that jungle, so it’ll be really interesting to see what happens!

Congrats to both Bill and Val for pulling the project forward and if it works, expect Wave 2 in about a month or so!

This is not the only Extended Media project that Val is shepherding, and we’re hoping to have some exciting app news for you in a few months. On the electronic gaming accessory front, though, we’ve kind of ground to a halt after losing our graphics person. If you or someone you know is familiar with creating graphics for Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, and would like to be considered for a freelance gig creating those gaming accessories for us, please contact me at richt@theonyxpath.com.

    2- Our Prince’s Gambit Kickstarter finished stronger than expected with 1520 backers and $46,774 in pledges. We’ll be doing more of a postmortem next week, as we just plain ran out of time this week, that I hope to share, but overall it’s great to be able to say that Justin’s little card game idea got that big a response!

    3- Speaking of Kickstarts, Fast Eddy Webb and I had two meetings today going over Pugmire and then the upcoming Monarchies of Mau Kickstarter. Monarchies of Mau is the companion game to Pugmire that allows players to play as uplifted cats in the same world. Of course, they have their own society whose rigid code of honor is quite different than that of the dogs of Pugmire, and which often causes misunderstanding and conflicts when the cats deign to engage with the dogs.

We’re looking at starting the Kickstarter in May, so keep your eyes peeled and listen for the padding of stealthy feet.

ophelia is vv traditional so ofc her fave is briar flowers. she also loves lavender bc it helps her sleep & that's a big thing for her as an oracle of vaermina. idk if they exist in tamriel but lexi loves corpse flowers aka titan arum bc they smell like rotting meat and the namira worshipper in her loves that. she likes the smell of rot, it's invigorating to her !! hypatia is a fan of nightshades bc they grow a lot bear the compost pits she uses for her vines, so she loves the smell out of association. esmeralda loves death bells and red mountain flowers bc they're used in her clan's old poison gas recipe and it was a big discovery for them. adeline loves snowberries!! they're the only nice thing abt the cold climate as far as she's concerned lol. honey loves thistles because one time she pulled a prank where she put them in her mom's sandwich and she laughed her ass off (even tho she got in trouble). beatrice loves all different types of mountain flowers and decorates the camp w lots of them. she also likes baking them into bread for the gang !! and last but not least, lucien loves snowberries too ❤ he thinks they're super yummy and he LOVES the cold climate. he and lex would often toss them at each other to try to catch them in their mouths.
