name: Gemma Jones Devereux gender & pronouns: Cis Woman | She/her age & date of birth: 31 years old | December 27th, 1991 neighborhood: Downtown time living in nashville: 31 years (whole life) occupation: Singer and songwriter with Deverocks Records
BACKGROUND.
TW: child neglect, alcoholism, drug use
Ahead of the birth of his second child, his father was convinced they were having a boy - absolutely desperate for a son, who he was planning to name George Jones Devereux in homage to one of his favorite starts. On December 27th, 1991, Gemma Jones Devereux was born at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, the second Devereux daughter, three years younger than her sister Maggie. Born into the Devereux empire and looking every bit as blonde and blue eyed as her mother, Gemma can remember her earliest memories of the sparkling lights of Broadway in and the bright lights of the spotlights that shone down on her when her father would bring her out onstage and hoist her onto his hip at the end of a show. Back then, everyone cooed and fawned over the Devereux children at their parents shows and signings, and Gemma was happily toted along like a little show pony, as if one of her mother's greatest accomplishments was producing adorable little children (it wasn't a surprise then, that three more siblings followed).
Gemma’s early life was playing backstage at her parents shows and loving all the attention she got from her parents’ fans. She couldn't distinctly remember when she really caught onto her parents substance abuse, or the first time she distinctly thought "my parents shouldn’t say that to us," but by the time she was in the second grade, she was keenly aware of the way her mother's moods swung like a pendulum, the way she could get angry over anything, and the way her anger wasn't taken out on anyone rationally, just whichever one of the children was closest. She could plainly see that Maggie, her oldest sister, took way more of her mother's aggression than any of their siblings, and when she thought about it, she realized that it was quite possible that Gemma herself was on the receiving end of the least amount of her mother's anger and manipulation, although even she got her fair share.
There were always comments (mostly from her mother) about which little Devereux would grow up to be the very best, who would be the best singer? who would grow up to take over Deverocks? It was dangled in their faces like candy, and, to Gemma, she took that to understand that she had to be the very best… at everything. Whether it was because she'd grown up in Maggie's shadow or because she was simply driven, Gemma tried hard at everything. She got stellar grades in school, was a varsity swimming all of high school, and, most importantly, she could sing and write music. She’d been singing and performing since she remembered, guided her mother and obediently following along to all the lessons she was sent to.
She didn’t expect to be signed to Deverocks at 17 years old, before even her sister had - but that was their mother, constantly trying to pit her children against each other, particularly her two oldest girls. Gemma signed the dotted line, realizing her life was going to change forever, and even knowing that, she couldn’t have been prepared for what her life became. Gone were her dreams of going to an Ivy League or getting a swim scholarship in college - she didn’t even go to college. Instead, Deverocks capitalized on her as America’s Sweetheart, a young, sweet country girl with Country Music Hall of Fame in her blood.
It wasn’t that Gemma didn’t like the success- she did, but was it what she wanted? She couldn’t say. She liked singing, she loved touring, and she knew she was doing well at Deverocks, but the underlying turmoil of her family was something she could never escape. Above all, while Gemma was pumping out album after album- she was observing the business, making connections, and trying to figure out how, if she could, make sure her siblings and herself could escape the toxicity in their family and skirt out from under the pressure of one day possibly owning Deverocks Records. She knows she’s doing better and better with every album, but at the same time, part of her knows she could do more, could do better. She wants more control over her career, more than she has a Deverocks. She wants to write more, she wants to do other things, branch out into pop and see how successful she can really be. But that would mean leaving Deverocks Records for a competitor, which is a move that she knows would change her life forever once again.

Marti finished off the drink in her hand, flagging the bartender to get another. "Men are pathetic like that," she hummed. "They see a beautiful, talented woman and think to themselves, 'You know what she needs? Me. That'd really make her day.' And frankly, we don't. We never need them, especially not women with as much to offer as you." She'd never wanted to be the kind of woman who settled, but once she had and it blew up in her face, Marti made it a point to remind just about every single man she knew just how much she didn't, in fact, need them to be happy. The perks of being bisexual, perhaps, but Marti didn't care to dwell on the cause, only that it was fact.
"Let me steal you away, then!" Marti had tried, of course, to bring her friends under her father's label over the years, if only so she could work with them. It was different with Gemma, she knew the dynamics of family and business mixing as well as anyone, but she didn't stop subtly suggesting Gemma leave them. "What on earth has poor Maggie done to warrant your mother's harassment now?" She laughed at Gemma's statement, not even pretending to buy the serious expression. If anyone understood how much fun it was to poke the bear, it was the blonde sitting across from her.
"Did I say you needed them?" Gemma asked back evenly. "Still, more followers and exposure never hurts," She teased, her voice pitching up in the end like a song. She wrinkled her nose at Marti's description, about to open her mouth and object and point out that her career did not depend on those things, but instead decided to drop it. "Ew gross - that is not my idea of fun," She stuck her tongue out. "A bunch of gross men thinking I owe them something is not what I need." She laughed. Her love life was an absolute trainwreck as it was and somehow, Gemma only continued to make it more and more complicated no matter how hard she tried to unravel it.
Rolling her eyes, Gemma shrugged. "Sometimes I wish I wasn't working with my label period. Although my mom has been easy on me lately- she's got it out for Maggie about who knows what." She said. That was usually how things tended to go, although Gemma knew before long something would happen to throw a wrench in her own peace and happiness - that type of thing never lasted long. At Marti's sentiment about her father, Gemma faux-gasped. "What? Piss off your parents? Oh I could absolutely never," She said, holding her expression serious until the last second. Fucking with her parents was exactly what Gemma did.

— who: @gemma-devereux — when: Street Fair — where: sound check set up
Sound check duty was pretty easy for Hayes. All he had to do was fix the equipment as the performers went up and moved around the stage. It was the more hands on part of the job that Hayes could do with his eyes closed. Or with his second energy drink of the morning in hand. He was climbing down from checking the wires on a speaker hanging up over one of the stage eaves. Grabbing the can he left behind, he realized he wasn't alone. Glancing up, blue eyes widened a little bit behind his glasses. Gemma Devereux was standing there. "Oh hey," Hayes said. "You up next? Not to brag but I did just secure this so it won't fall and crush you." He said patting the speaker next to him.

Carson was somehow a laid back and excitable guy all at once. He had a warm demeanor about him, making friends with most people pretty easily. He'd been around celebrities for enough of his life to know to play it cool, though. His dad had brought him to mixers and events at the record label ever since he'd been a kid, so it was only natural that he mix with other industry professionals, even if they'd been from rival labels.
Gemma was from Nashville, so he'd seen her around for much of his life. "Hey, G," he greeted. He probably didn't know her quite well enough for the nickname, but Carson spoke to almost everyone with the same well-meaning and friendly nature. "You kicked ass tonight, girl. I bet my dad is sweating bullets about how his artists are gonna live up to it," he teased. "You coming to any of the bars later? The Tin Roof is doing some stuff for Pride. Imagine all the Queens shitting breaks when you walk in," he chuckled. "You've never seen a real cover of any of your songs 'til you've seen it lip synced by a drag queen."

Ryland hated difficult conversations, and it seemed like some of the worst ones came to a head with a certain Gemma Devereaux. He liked Gemma, she was one of the good ones in the Devereaux family as far as he was concerned, but that didn't mean they always saw eye to eye. As soon as he'd gotten off the phone with his lawyer, he'd called her up and asked her to meet him at Tootsie's. Ryland showed up and grabbed a seat, anxiously waiting for the blonde to arrive. As soon as she did, he raked his hand through his hair and cleared his throat, clearly not excited about what he had to say.
"So there was a mistake on the paperwork," he started, gaze falling to the table briefly before he forced himself to look at her in the eyes. "My lawyer's fixing it, but the song got filed with my real name on it and not RJ Thatcher. He's working on getting it fixed, but you'll want to keep your mom off the radar for a week or two, just to make sure it gets sorted out before she starts stalking your next big hit."
They had a mutual agreement. Any song he wrote on for her got filed with his ghost writer name, and he never told a soul he wrote it, mostly so neither of them had to face the fallout that was Mrs. Devereaux. However, he was really tired of the whole thing, he had been from the start. As much as he wished it could be clear cut, Ryland wasn't one to put anyone in a bind, so he could only hold so much of a grudge about it all. "I'm sorry, Gemma, I really am. I promise you, as soon as I heard, I was on the phone with my lawyer. It'll get resolved, I swear. I just figured you could use a drink with this news instead of hearing it over text."

— who: @gemma-devereux — where: Creative Commons
Giving back to the community is good for you. His manager had said. She had laid it on really thick considering Brooks hadn’t fought the suggestion to help run a songwriting workshop for college students and other up and comers at the Creative Commons. Brooks was genuinely excited to do it, but it felt like she had prepared an entire speech to convince him so he just let it happen. So that’s how he found himself climbing the steps to the Creative Commons and shaking the hand of the organizer earlier on a Saturday than he’d ever like to be awake, but it was worth it. That’s what he told himself as he unloaded his guitar as well as a mandolin. He wasn’t the only one on the docket, either, as the second guest walked through the door. Gemma Deveraux. Brooks was secure enough in his own career to know that her name has been more mainstream for a longer amount of time, and that was probably the pull for a lot of the people who signed up for the class. But he was confident enough in his own career trajectory to know that his name had some pull too. “Mornin’,” Brooks greeted the woman as she walked into the room. “Beautiful day to affect the minds of the future of songwriters am I right?” He asked, quoting the college’s description of the class directly.

Avery had gone home with a friend, having a sleepover tonight, so Ellie was on her own, wandering around with a frozen lemonade in her hand. She heard a familiar voice coming from one of the stages set up and smiled to herself as she made her way over to watch the end of Gemma's set. She stood in the back and when it was over she headed around the back to see if she could catch her and say hi afterward but a security guard waved her off and told her to get lost. "Rude." She muttered under her breath but she wasn't about to argue with someone. Ellie turned to head back down the road when she caught a glimpse of blonde hair and paused, getting on her tiptoes to wave at Gemma through the crowd.

Stitches
“Not every party ends with a dead clown,” consoles Kate (Gemma-Leah Devereux) to a traumatized Tom (Tommy Knight), who’s fled his sixteenth birthday party after the school bully taunts him by dressing as a clown. Cut to the cemetery, where Stitches (Ross Noble), the clown killed by the kids’ practical joke at Tom’s tenth birthday party, rises from the grave to exact revenge. That gives you an idea of the humor in Conor McMahon’s slasher, STITCHES (2012, Shudder). The film is audacious and profane, with shocking cuts that elicit a laugh and slapstick kills that go way over the top. In other words, it’s my kind of movie. It’s derivative, of course, with clown jokes like those in KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988) and a wisecracking killer like Freddy Kreuger. But it also delivers exactly what you’d expect. Knight is a sympathetic lead, haunted by hallucinations after seeing Stitches die (though McMahon forgets that after Stitches returns), his best friends are well played, his crush is worth the trouble, and the bullies are suitably vile, so you don’t mind seeing them done in. There are some lapses in logic. It’s established that Stitches can materialize anywhere, so his chasing after Knight and Devereux on a tricycle just seems a cheap laugh. Some of the kills go so over the top the gore upstages the comic elements. And (the only permissible spoiler), Stitches doesn’t have to kill Tom’s cat. But on the whole it’s grisly fun.

☆ TLDR ☆
Gemma Jones Devereux is the second oldest in her family, growing up as her mother's favorite due to her strong resemblance to her mother. As a child, she tried to play the role of peacemaker during family drama and fights, protecting and herding her younger siblings off to their rooms while going to comfort her older sister, who often clashed with their mother. At 17, Gemma became the first child in the family to be signed to the label and quickly erupted into stardom. While she loves what she does, Gemma's true passion is in songwriting, but her mother and the label would never let her write for other artists. However, it's a very well-kept secret among some people that Gemma does write for other artists all the time using a male ghost name, Drew King. All of the Devereux's are competing for ownership of Deverocks, but Gemma has been considering leaving the label and switching to a more mainstream label in order to capitalize on her success and see how big she can really be. Her end goal is to accumulate enough wealth and fame to possibly buy Deverocks from her parents, or at least accumulate enough wealth to put an end to the family drama and ensure all of her siblings are set for life. Currently, Gemma is on a break from her tour and is back in Nashville, TN.
☆ Full Biography ☆
EARLY LIFE (age 0-7):
Ahead of the birth of his second child, Gemma’s father was convinced they were having a boy - absolutely desperate for a son, who he was planning to name George Jones Devereux in homage to one of his favorite stars.
On December 27th, 1991, Gemma Jones Devereux was born at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, the second Devereux daughter, three years younger than her sister Maggie. Mr. Devereux never got his son George, but he, and her entire family, always fondly called Gemma Jonesie anyway.
Born into the Devereux empire and looking every bit as blonde and blue-eyed as her mother, Gemma can remember her earliest memories of the sparkling lights of Broadway in and the bright lights of the spotlights that shone down on her when her father would bring her out onstage and hoist her onto his hip at the end of a show.
CHILDHOOD + EARLY TEENS (age 7-17):
It was dangled in their faces like candy, and, to Gemma, she took that to understand that she had to be the very best... at everything.
Whether it was because she'd grown up in Maggie's shadow or because she was simply driven, Gemma tried hard at everything.
She got stellar grades in school, was a varsity swimmer all of high school, and, most importantly, she could sing and write music.
She’d been singing and performing since she remembered, guided by her mother and obediently following along to all the lessons she was sent to.
ADULTHOOD + THE SPOTLIGHT (age 17-now):
Being exposed to celebrity so young, Gemma had a brief partying phase, experimenting with drugs that got passed around at parties, that her boyfriends always seemed to have access too, but she hated the way they made her feel, and, above all, she feared becoming her parents. She cut the drugs out, but not the drinking.
☆ Relationships ☆
Older sister: @maggiedereux - Maggie and Gemma are two and a half years apart, and Gemma has idolized her older sister since her earliest memory. As the two oldest Devereux children, and both girls, their relationship was a rollercoaster of competition and codependence, made worse by their mother, who pit them against each other at all opportunities. Gemma, more mild-mannered and younger, got the least of their mother's wrath while Maggie got the worst, and they spent a large part of their youth flipping back and forth in which one was acting as the "older sister." Gemma stepped into that role whenever Maggie and their mother were having a particularly bad fight, shepherding their younger siblings into their rooms and then fishing a bobby pin out of her jewelry box to pick the lock on Maggie's door, crawling into bed with her older sister and wiping her tears. Maggie did the same for her too many times to count, always trying to protect all of them from their mother. Gemma was signed before Maggie, even though, to Gemma, Maggie's always been more talented. Gemma harshly disapproves of Maggie's drug use and drinking, and constantly tries to pry and see if her sister really is okay, because truly, she never really believes her.
Younger brother: @callumdevereux - Growing up in the Devereux family, Gemma and Callum were polar opposites. While Callum was shy and quiet, Gemma was the opposite, unbothered by the twinkling spotlights in her eyes when her parents carried her onstage at the end of their shows. As the designated protector and peacemaker, Gemma kept an eye out for her younger siblings, always trying to shepherd them off to their rooms when the fighting escalated, trying to distract them with toys and games so it wasn't as upsetting. Gemma maintains a close relationship with all of her siblings, even Callum, and fully supported him selling his shares of the company and cutting ties with the label.
Love affair: @rowan-dashner - Gemma and Rowan are currently sleeping together/seeing each other in secret. Rowan is married, and Gemma never intended to be someone's mistress, but one of the talents he manages was an opener for Gemma on tour and they ended up spending a lot of time together until they hooked up one night, starting a tour romance. Rowan would sneak into Gemma's trailer or hotel room every night. They truly have fallen in love with each other and although she knows it's wrong, she craves the stability and peace Rowan brings her. Rowan has become the inspiration for several of her songs, including her single I Can See You, which heavily references secret hookups and romances.
Situationship: @tylermason - Tyler Mason, another person Gemma should not be hooking up with. Tyler is her musical rival and, in the public eye, they're enemies, their singles and albums constantly vying for number one. However, behind the scenes, whenever they're both in Nashville and not touring, they're usually staying at each other's places and hooking up. Their relationship is incredibly secretive because their labels would be furious if they knew, and Gemma's incredibly conflicted between Rowand and Tyler, two hookups that developed into something much more, and two men that she has feelings for but she has to keep secret.
Publicist: @emiliamcdden - Emilia is Gemma's publicist, someone responsible for maintaining her image as America's sweetheart and cleaning up any media messes. Beyond that, Emilia has grown to become someone Gemma trusts beyond a professional relationship, especially since their is so much drama and betrayal in the industry. Gemma's incredibly grateful to Emilia and considers her a friend.
Best friend: @colton-reynolds - Colton and Gemma are an unlikely close pair, having bonded over their shared hard times and witnessed each other at their worst. Now that they've both stopped using (at least, for the most part, on Gemma's part), she'd drawn to Colton because she doesn't have to try around him and she knows he doesn't judge her or view her as Gemma the celebrity, rather, Gemma- the person.
Friend and mentee: @chloecampbell - On paper, Gemma and Chloe are rivals. Blonde, successful, with similar aesthetics, both marketed as all-American sweethearts. Gemma was told Chloe was her competition, but when Chloe collapsed onstage in LA, Gemma saw too much of herself in the younger girl and showed up at her house in Nashville shortly after she canceled her tour. Instead of acting like her enemy, Gemma took on the role of mentor and friend, keeping an eye on Chloe and helping her, even co-writing together and pushing Chloe to try her hand at writing.
☆ Facts ☆
Her drink of choice is bourbon (a nod to TVD, iykyk). She drinks it straight and will drink it after a long day or when she needs something to take the edge off, but when she's out, she'll order a whiskey coke, a Paloma, aperol spritz, or skinny margarita. She drank way too much vodka as a college student, and isn't a picky drinker, although she tries to avoid anything overly sweet.
Gemma is severely allergic to peanuts and all tree nuts. She carries an epipen and Benadryl with her almost always, and goes to an allergist every six months (so far she's failed every test and hasn't outgrown any allergies).
She is a big reader, when time allows. She loves the world of books and is prone to crying at the end of books because she's sad there over. A bad habit Gemma has is beginning a book and then staying up all night to finish it, and she has a notebook full of all her favorite quotes from books that she's handwritten over the years.
Gemma keeps diaries. She knows it's stupid and old fashioned and she'd probably be totally fucked if anyone found them, but something about keeping diaries and writing down all of her thoughts is incredibly therapeutic to her. This hobby goes hand in hand with her love of reading, and, in a way, Gemma likes the thought that she's writing the story of her life, as it happens. Of course, her emotions and thoughts change all the time, but if she didn't have an outlet to get her feelings out, she'd probably never sleep, or be even closer to perpetually losing her shit than she is on a daily basis.
She is absolutely addicted to coffee and prefers iced coffee to hot coffee. Gemma's convinced it doesn't actually affect her anymore and she's still so tired all the time but still drinks it out of habit and loves the ritual of making coffee every morning.
She is a terrible sleeper. She's a constant worried who is absolutely awful at turning her brain off at night to rest because she's constantly thinking about work, her family, her relationships, and her life-at-large. She sleeps much better when she's sleeping next to someone, and also sleeps better when the sun is out and she can take naps.
When it comes to values, Gemma is very traditional, honest, and true, despite the emotional turmoil that was her childhood and upbringing. She values her relationships with her family, friends, and partners above all else and when she does something, she'll stick to her word. She's never cheated on a partner and rarely ever lies or sneaks around the truth. She's a terrible liar to begin with, but also hates the feeling it gives her and she automatically feels bad about it. However, when it comes to protecting her family, she'd lie or do whatever she needs to do for her parents and siblings, even though her relationships with each of them are incredibly complicated and nuanced.

— who: @gemma-devereux— where: Deverocks Records
The good thing about being handy was how many people wanted to hire you for quick jobs they needed done. The bad thing about being handy was when your friends called you at seven am because they arrived to work early and the office’s air conditioner was broken in the middle of summer in Tennessee. How fast can you get here? His friend - a producer over at Deverocks Records - asked a still pretty much asleep Hayes without even trying to figure out if the blonde could. To be honest Hayes very rarely said no to jobs, he was getting paid and he was helping a friend so what was the harm? But he really considered it today. Getting out of his bed was a struggle. But after the promise of free coffee and lunch if the fix took that long, Hayes was across town, sitting on the floor behind the front desk of this record label, fucking around with their air conditioning unit when the security system announced someone at the door. “Hey, can I help you?” He asked on reflex. Maybe in his heart he thought he’d be mistaken for the receptionist, given where he was standing. But the receptionist had disappeared for a few meetings or whatever while he worked, and also who would believe this person behind the desk in a band tshirt with the sleeves cut off and a backwards baseball hat covering the tousled hair he didn’t comb before he left, was working in a fancy office like this one? No one. “....sorry the answer to that question is no regardless if you needed help or not,” Hayes laughed, finally turning to see who was standing there. Gemma Devereux definitely didn’t need his help getting around this office. “Oh hey. How's it goin?” He asked, giving her a quick nod before going back to the wiring in his hands.

Gemma rolled her eyes when he referred to her as rascal, turning her head to look at him. "It was open," She shrugged, glancing up at the tattoo examples that plastered the walls. Gemma knew she'd probably never get another tattoo again, it was very much not her vibe, but even still, she was glad she had one, even if they'd both been under the influence when she'd let him do it. It made her feel kind of badass, doing something that her label and mother didn't know about or have any control over (despite the fact that they controlled essentially all of her image). "That is so gross," She wrinkled her nose at his description of the tattoo he'd given, even though she knew she'd been the one who asked about it in the first place.
"That genuinely sounds like my nightmare," She confessed blatantly, knowing she didn't really have to put up a front with Colton, considering he had seen her at her absolute worse and vice versa. "I'm performing later so I'll guess I'll have to then," Gemma said, watching him continue to put away the equipment. "But when I'm not on tour I would love to be able to not look like me and be able to just not have to deal with all of it," She elaborated. She'd been doing this for so long, she didn't really remember what it was like to not be recognized. Even when she was young, her father had brought her onstage - she'd been a Devereux from day one, even though lately, she'd been thinking more and more about how nice it would be to not be one. "What're you getting up to later? Any fair things?"
Colton had the radio on as he was cleaning, mopping the floor and dancing around to the music as he did. He liked being the last one here, always volunteered to close up shop at the end of the night after everyone had gone home. He didn't much care for being home alone so he always found an excuse to stay away from that option as long as he could. The peppy little voice from behind him pulled him out of his thoughts and he smiled at Gemma. "How the hell did you get in here ya little rascal?" He laughed and set the mop down, leaning against a table. "Rough choice. The street fair brings in all kinds of crazies but I guess I'd say the girl who wanted a cow with frog head on her butt cheek."
Gemma was a reminder of his past, of a person he really hoped he no longer was. When they'd been using together he was a shell of a man, someone who was just taking his life minute by minute. He'd been clean a year now but he still felt that tug every day, the desperate fight to stay away from it all. "What are you doin' hidin' out in here instead of takin' pictures with tourists out on Broadway hmm?"

Judy (2019)
Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of "the world's greatest entertainer."
