youre right it is surge. can you blame me. shes peak. but it also really made me appreciate cream and gemerl in ways i hadnt before, and don is probably my favorite side character. i love a gay custodian rooster. favorite arc for sure 100% is. whatever the arc focused on surge and kit is from their first reveal to their defeat by sonic, tails, eggman, and metal sonic those issues have some of my favorite panels and writing of the whole comic and yeah realizing the mecha sonic scrapnik island comic was in this series was part of what made me bite the bullet to start officially reading it and i loved it a lot :)

surge is genuinely the only answer she is so the ever of all time. but yeah in addition to the generally just great writing, i think idw is very good about letting all the characters just have their own really good Fun moments. i mean hell, i'd never had any real experience with silver's character before this and idw made me love him so much i went out of my way to play sonic fucking 06 to see where it was coming from.

& of course mecha my beloved......hes claimed many victims for idw and by my hand he'll claim more. scrapnik is still my fave as a standalone [partially because it IS so standalone] but yeah in the full context of the comics and other arcs imposter syndrome is kind of unbeatable. they hyped the hell out of idw50 and it did not fail to deliver one bit

I have a soft spot for the Knuckles stories, even if they were kinda mumblemumble — but i adored seeing this dude scheme and plot his way through the B stories of the Flynn era before finally bringing it together some of the coolest stuff those older stories had to offer.

Also shout out to specifically Gemerl as he was written post-reboot, i wish he had that Shard personality in IDW ;0;

Incorrect, @angry-brony, but I can see why you'd think that.

Flynn has stated that in his original plans for Unsung Heroes, (We're talking back when Hershey was probably supposed to be part of the team before that got nixed by Penders) was that Agent Jack would've been Gemerl, not Shard.

The original Metal Sonic was meant to stay dead, while the stories of Sonic Battle and Sonic Advance 3 would've been backported into the Archieverse and this would've been Gemerl's first appearance in the comic and a breakout role for him.

However, SEGA refused to allow him to use Gemerl. This wasn't long after Flynn had to fight tooth and nail to be allowed to use the other characters introduced in the 2002-2004 range, and he was similarly disallowed from using Mephiles and Iblis around the same time. This is something that continues up to this day, with Flynn confirming that SEGA won't allow him to use Infinite (because surviving your uncertain but implied demise is only allowed for universally beloved character Zavok, apparently) in IDW.

So with Gemerl taken off the table, Flynn brought Shard in to fill his role.

I think, narratively, bringing back Shard was a better choice than going "Oh hey, these two GBA games from a decade ago are canon and this robot is a new protagonist despite nobody mentioning him before", setting aside my own dislike of reviving characters who sacrificed their lives.

Then the reboot happened, Shard got deleted, and SEGA finally allowed Gemerl to be used, which created something of a perception that he was a replacement for Shard due to timing.

But Gemerl doesn't have Shard's personality, he has Emerl's. Back when Archie's reboot was actually releasing, the prevailing fan opinion was that Emerl and Gemerl were functionally the same character, at least after Advance 3's true ending, maybe even before that. Almost every fanwork that actually used Gemerl treated him as Emerl, reborn.

Archie didn't get to use him much, but the way he acts largely scans with Emerl's portrayal from the end of Sonic Battle, filtered through a Flynn lens. That's how pervasive this idea was prior to IDW deconfirming it, it made its way into the official comics.

So is this actually an Uno-Reverse situation, where actually Shard had the personality intended for Gemerl this whole time time, and post-reboot, Gemerl simply reclaimed the characterisation that was always supposed to be his?

Probably not.

I think the most likely reason for their similar characterisation (besides Flynn's own tendency to give a lot of characters that sort of personality) is that both Emerl/Gemerl and Shard have the same basic root for their personality traits. Shard's personality is based on Sonic's, but so is Emerl's, literally, as Emerl absorbed traits from the other characters during his time with them, primarily from Sonic and Shadow, with Sonic himself making up the lion's share of his core traits.

They're both based on Sonic, so they end up feeling very similar to each other, which is probably why it was so easy to slot Shard into a role originally meant for Gemerl, and to have Gemerl kinda pick up the torch where Shard left it come the reboot.

Then IDW, likely at SEGA's behest, drew a line between Emerl and Gemerl, separating them completely, and Emerl got the personality in the divorce.

Advance 3 my beloved. The spritework. The tag team animations. The voice clips. Gemerl learning from his fights and developing more sophisticated moves as you progress. DEEM BRISTOW EGGMAN. The utter cuteness of the team-ups. The colorful environments, Toy Kingdom and Cyber Track especially! lsdknkldsnfkln there's so much to love about this game

Advance 3 is a great game and I dare say fun and what if I may be so bold as to declare it's charming

It's not perfect of course, it has some annoying flaws for first time players, but the sheer replayability value it has and the vibrancy and almost dream-like quality of the levels and the hubs, plus the inherent good feelings that come from the intricate Super Power of Teamwork, have no peers.

What other game gives you the chance to glide on Knuckles' back as the most gorgeous aurora shimmers in the distance?

(and may I add to your gushing about the English voice clips the utter cuteness that is Cream saying "yarimashita!" in Japanese? <3)
