Meer dan 1800 mensen verdrinken en een veelvoud daarvan verliest have en goed tijdens de watersnoodramp van 1953. In Rotterdam houdt Schielands Hoge Zeedijk net stand, maar ten zuiden van de lijn Westzeedijk-Schiedamsedijk-Blaak-Groenendaal-Oostplein is er ernstige wateroverlast, maar ook Katendrecht, Bloemhofkwartier, Oranjeboomstraat, Rosestraat en Noordereiland staan straten onder water. Ook Pernis, Hoogvliet en IJsselmonde hadden van het water te lijden. De verbinding tussen de maasoevers via bruggen was verbroken, treinverkeer was alleen mogelijk in de richting Den Haag. In de haven raakten schepen op drift en er was grote materiële schade door verzakkingen en beschadigingen van kademuren en emplacementen.

De Ahoy’-hal en kort daarna het Feyenoord-Stadion worden aangewezen als opvang- en doorvoercentrum voor evacuees uit de bedreigde en overstroomde gebieden. Vandaar worden de vluchtelingen door bemiddeling van kerkelijke- of overheidsinstanties ondergebracht in de stad. In de tweede helft van februari herbergt Rotterdam bijna 10.000 mensen, grotendeels afkomstig van de Zuid-Hollandse en Zeeuwse eilanden.

Het plan Witteveen, dat kort na het bombardement van 1940 was gemaakt, had de waterkering van de Hoogstraat naar de nieuw te bouwen boulevard langs de Maas verlegd. De werkzaamheden waren al in 1946 gestart met vernieuwing van de 450 meter lange kademuren langs de Boompjes. De stormvloed van 1953 toonde andermaal de urgentie aan van een waterkering. Daarvoor moesten veel panden worden gesloopt en een deel van de Oude Haven worden gedempt.

De Oudehavenkade met links Plan C, 1907. Op de achtergrond de Hoofdsteeg.

De kade tussen de Mosseltrap en de Geldersekade ontving in 1884 de naam Oudehavenkade. De huidige Oudehavenkade ligt op dezelfde plaats als haar voorganger. In het charter van 25 juli 1328 is sprake van het maken van een haven te Rotterdam en in 1351 vindt men hier reeds een steiger. Deze haven was toen het water, van de Blaak tot het Moriaansplein (de vroegere Kolk), waar zich de Dordtsche Steiger bevond. De uitbreiding van de stad naar het zuiden had ook tengevolge, dat de haven in zuidelijke richting werd verlengd.

Plan C was een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw dat gevestigd was op scheiding tussen de Oude Haven en de Kolk in Rotterdam. Het gebouw opende zijn deuren op 4 maart 1889 en is verloren gegaan tijdens het bombardement op 14 mei 1940.
