First review of the new year! I also decided that once I hit twenty, I'll start a new graph because this one is getting pretty crowded. There's plenty of open space, but I'm not likely to read stuff in that open space so…

Anyway, my review of Copper Coins:

Romantic - Fucky is not how risque a work is but rather my opinion of the attitude/quality of the main relationship, the way the characters interact with respect to one another. I like a lot of stuff in fiction but if you’re easily made uncomfortable, stay towards the top half.

Easy reading - Plot-heavy is how I personally consider the plot’s intricacy and successful implementation, regardless of the author’s intention.

Copper Coins

Author: Mu Su Li

Quality: 5

Enjoyment: 4

Comments: Oof. I hate, absolutely hate, saying the phrase "show don't tell" about novels because it has to do with screenwriting and doesn't really apply to novels all that much but damn. This book was so surface level. I did not feel a single emotion the entire time. It actually reminded me a little bit of Nan Chan, and retroactively made me like that book better because I would definitely rather reread that than this. Not saying it's a bad book, I'm sure it's fine, and if you liked Nan Chan and want a relationship with a similar dynamic and are less of a bitch than I am, you will probably like this one too. It just doesn't have enough emotional depth to be entertaining to me.

Would I read it again: No, and I won't read anything else by this author either.

Mo Dao Zu Shi

Author: MXTX

Quality: 9.5

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: I have a huge emotional connection to this novel. There are some weak parts, the tension isn’t quite even, she’s pretty terrible at erotic scenes and not great at fight scenes…but that being said, I love the characters and some of the plot points really ripped my heart out. This is a novel that’s really driven by the characters so if you’re a character-focused person like me, definitely look into it (as if we all don’t already know it lmao). I really, really love this story. Every single adaptation of it has also been great, but the novel is still my favorite. It was my introduction to xianxia novels too, so you can say it changed my life!

Would I read it again: I’ve already read it twice, and consumed every adaptation (sometimes also multiple times)

Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System

Author: MXTX

Quality: 6

Enjoyment: 5

Comments: I’m not much of one for comedy and, as I discovered, not really into system novels either. Clearly weaker than MXTX’s later work, many of the characters are somewhat bland, she hasn’t quite found her groove yet. It’s not my style but the fandom is hilarious and the fans constantly produce content that I actually do find entertaining so overall I still have some fond feelings for this one, even if not for the source material.

Would I read it again: I found a different translation and am willing to try again in the future, I’m also willing to watch the donghua. But I can’t guarantee I’ll like it any more than previously.

Tian Guan Ci Fu

Author: MXTX

Quality: 10

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: I love this book…but not as much as I love Mo Dao Zu Shi. I think the plot is somewhat typical, however the characters are great once again (though maybe slightly less deep than MDZS), and her use of thematic repetition and foreshadowing are killer. Actually, I liked this book more the second time around because it just hits differently. Definitely the best of MXTX’s couples, they are so soft and sweet. Very long, but worth it.

Would I read it again: I already have, was personally translating the manhua before I hurt my arms, and am eagerly awaiting the donghua this fall!

The Villain’s White Lotus Halo

Author: A Big Roll of Toilet Paper

Quality: 10

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: Fuck, I love this one so much…..even though it’s also a system novel. But that part is in it so rarely that it reads more like pure fantasy. I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the way the relationship is developing. Oh yeah, the translation isn’t even complete but I already purchased not only the original from JJWXC but also the print edition. I’ve even drawn fanart for it, which is so unlike me. Every time a chapter comes out, I’m ruined for the rest of the day, I can’t think about anything else. Good fight scenes, which is uncommon. My favorite danmei novel so far.

Would I read it again: I fully intend to once the translation is complete, and also plan to read it in Chinese later (I’ve already read certain parts in Chinese hahaha but not the whole thing)

2Ha (Husky and his White Cat Shizun)

Author: Meatbun Doesn’t Eat Meat

Quality: 8

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: 2Ha is not for the faint of heart, it’s very horny, and violent, and has a lot of questionable content. However I love it so much. The story and characters are great, Meatbun really has me by the heart. The writing is a little more on the casual side but it hardly matters because the story is so great. Good fight scenes. Chu Wanning is like, the ultimate Me™ character, I hate how much I adore him. If you read this, just go into it knowing that it’s a long emotional journey, the characters are very dynamic and there’s a lot of character development.

Would I read it again: Same as the above, I plan a reread when the translation is done and have read parts in Chinese and might read the whole thing again later. Cautiously eager about the up-coming live action and donghua.

Di Wang Gong Lue

Author: Yu Xiao Lanshan

Quality: 2

Enjoyment: 9

Comments: This is one of the most terribly written things I’ve ever read, but I’m a character girl and the characters and ways they interact fucking kill me. I’m constantly entertained….although I don’t think this is actually supposed to be a comedy. If I were going to treat myself and like, take a bubble bath and read something that made me laugh, this is exactly the sort of trashy romance I would want to read. Technically a political intrigue story but it’s so abrupt and full of holes, are any of us reading it for the actual plot? The donghua is on Youtube, I watched it first and recommend others to do the same. If you can handle that, you can handle the book because it’s exactly the same in quality, just gayer. I do love the main couple a lot, the set-up surrounding the relationship is great, and the side characters are also really fun.

Would I read it again: Probably not, but I’m still having fun with it. I watched the donghua and read a bit of the manhua as well, which has very cute art and is probably my favorite version of the story.

Liu Yao

Author: Priest

Quality: 6

Enjoyment: 7.5

Comments: I really struggled getting into this one, it took me about 25 chapters to get invested. Initially I had rated it a 6 in enjoyment but after careful thought, I realized that even though it was so hard for me, it probably is my favorite Priest novel and I really do love the main couple so much. Her side characters also seem to be slightly stronger than usual in this one. Decent plot, not too much or too little. It seems really chill to me, doesn’t provoke much of an emotional reaction but I do think it’s very sweet, which is nice sometimes too.

Would I read it again: No, but I think (?) it’s supposed to get some kind of tv adaptation (drama or donghua, not sure), and if that happens, I’ll watch it.

Didn’t Know the General was Female

Author: Rong Qing

Quality: 4

Enjoyment: 6

Comments: Not the greatest thing I’ve ever read, but cute. It’s short, and a little lesbian fluff is never a bad thing. Writing is a bit weak and the plot is basic, but the characters are enjoyable and I liked it overall.

Would I read it again: No.

Wrong Way to a Demon Sect Leader

Author: Yi Zhi Dayan

Quality: 4

Enjoyment: 7

Comments: Again, not the greatest in writing or plot, it’s a bit shallow. But I found the idea of it to be entertaining, and actually liked it more than I would have assumed. It’s fairly short and cute, like a good summer beach read.

Would I read it again: Probably not, but possibly, if the stars align.

Female General and Eldest Princess

Author: Please Don’t Laugh

Quality: 7

Enjoyment: 6

Comments: A very good first effort, but the writing is a bit weak. It’s slow to start and I don’t think the political plotline is spectacularly strong. Some things were left unexplained, and her sense of battle tactics and fight-writing were very confusing, definitely room for improvement. I don’t think it’s as good as people say, but she writes with the air of someone who will continue to improve. And also, a lesbian author writing lesbian stories so that’s a plus. Overall I enjoyed the experience, this story is definitely worth a read.

Would I read it again: Maybe, but probably not.

Sha Po Lang

Author: Priest

Quality: 7

Enjoyment: 7

Comments: Originally I rated this one higher, but on later thought I realized that I actually enjoyed Liu Yao more. I personally have issues with the way Priest writes, and this book showed a lot of them. Characters were okay, I did like the main couple, but side characters were weak as usual. The plot is pretty good, though not great, and I think some of the pacing is off. Some descriptions were confusing, but that could be a translation issue. Overall, still a pretty good political drama, but I would say that of the three I read, this was the Priest novel with the least impact on me.

Would I read it again: No. But I will watch the live action if it ever gets made.

Guardian

Author: Priest

Quality: 6

Enjoyment: 5

Comments: I love Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, thought the plot was interesting, and there were some enjoyable moments. But it has all the problems I usually have with Priest in addition to some choices that offend me as a queer reader. I spent about 75% of the time reading while pissed off. And actually the fact that it had a happy ending kinda bummed me out because I love a good tragedy. Overall, I can only give it an average score. If you like Priest, you’ll like this one too. I’m not a tv person but I binged the hell out of the live action, I really loved it, so I was sort of disappointed that the source material didn’t seem as strong as I had assumed.

Would I read it again: No, but I will happily watch the live action again some day.

Jing Wei Qing Shang

Author: Please Don’t Laugh

Quality: 9.8

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: I have to start off by saying: damn girl. The improvement evident in this book is absolutely insane. A few minor issues prevent me from giving it a 10 out of 10 – her transitions are still extremely abrupt, the ending is slightly weak and some plot points remain unresolved, and her use of narrative repetition is too heavy-handed for my taste. Other than that, this book leaves me almost speechless. Very similar to Female General and Eldest Princess, there are many similar themes and events. But while I thought FGEP was fairly cute, I like this one way better. If you like angst, political intrigue, and lesbians, you should definitely read this book. I have no doubt that Please Don’t Laugh will continue to improve in the future, and I really look forward to following her career.

Would I read it again: 100%, I absolutely intend to read this again sometime in the future. It’s very long and very dense but delightful and ultimately worth it.

Fox Demon Cultivation Manual

Author: Feng Ge Qie Xing

Quality: 8

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: This was a delightful romp. I had expected it to be somewhat silly and was pleasantly surprised. It was heavy enough to be engaging but light enough to be an easy read, with multiple spots that made me literally laugh out loud which does not happen often. This is apparently just one book in a series of same universe novels, and a lighter-hearted one at that. I would be interested to read the others because I found the world pretty engaging, and I do want to know what became of the other characters. Overall I found it very fun and very cute, I read it in four days so that says something. On the downside, the link for chapter 9 is broken. But skipping a chapter doesn’t seem to have affected the experience of the novel as a whole.

Would I read it again: Yeah I think I would be willing to read this again someday. If it gets adapted I would also consume adaptations, in addition to being interested in the other connected works.

Golden Stage

Author: Cang Wu Bin Bai

Quality: 6

Enjoyment: 7

Comments: This one has some Sha Po Lang vibes, but the characters have more depth and chemistry. The word ‘more’ here is extremely relative because it’s still pretty shallow. I honestly liked them both, I liked the relationship and the psuedo-rude way that they flirt entertained me. As for the plot…ehhhh. It tried. There were things that worked, but in general the plot seemed disjointed from the characters and there were a few things that had no business being there and just muddied the waters. It’s not bad necessarily, it’s just not very smooth. There are better political intrigues to read if that’s what you want. But if you just want some sugar-sweet fluff with a backdrop of drama, then this one is perfect. My favorite scene was probably the flashback to the first few times they met, absolutely fantastic.

Would I read it again: Nah.

Nan Chan

Author: Tang Jiuqing

Quality: 8

Enjoyment: 6

Comments: This one is kind of weird because it’s definitely competent, it’s well-written and has a fairly in-depth plot, but I just didn’t really enjoy it all that much? I never got emotionally attached to any of the characters, and I didn’t even really get the relationship buildup. I understand what the author is going for with it of course, but it didn’t necessarily make a lot of sense… Or rather it seems like some bits in the middle were just missing, there’s good buildup in the beginning and in the end but how they got from point A to point B was kind of not explored to my satisfaction. I did really like the flashback to the past, I thought that storyline was all pretty interesting. The big bad was kind of disappointing to me as well though. In general, I think this is a really good book with a lot of skill behind it but it’s just not really my thing.

Would I read it again: No.

starwarscast rythian

this au is essentially rythian playing himself in a dnd game set in star wars, pre clone wars. everyone else is also playing themselves. the last post i did was listing the current cast’s characters and their species, plus a sneak peek into nilesy and rythian’s stats.

below is all my cleaned up and compressed notes on rythian’s timeline, trivia and backstory.

rythian:

honorable mention of this rythian goes here because i rarely return to this au (i blame all the ‘canon’ worldbuilding we’re finally getting on rythian’s species, now decades after the original books were published) and i’m still fond of him.

hold up your thumb and index finger. now put them together so there’s the a gap but they’re not touching. that’s how much less gayer he is than blcast rythian.

long haired; keeps it well maintained with lush products bc he’s kind of vain about it. has it in a french braid that runs down his back. if he ever suggested cutting it, a petition would go around to stop him. he still has the pale/grey stripe running down the middle of his hair.

he still can’t cook. if anything, he’s even worse at it. whether or not he deliberately plays it up is a running joke. it’s a mystery how he survived as zoeya’s padawan. zoeya jokes about watering him whenever others ask. he doesn’t appreciate it.

rythian’s full name is in the archives, and he never uses it. he goes by a much shortened version (thanks to the circumstances by which he arrived at the temple, and zoeya’s help). keep reading for why.

the slightest mention of a holocron (sith or jedi) or lost knowledge is the fastest way to summon him from across a room. he’s one of the best artifact hunters and puzzle solvers.

his main job in the jedi temple is a librarian, and he has a reputation as a strict but helpful master. don’t run any of the texts, and you’ll keep staying on his good side.

he’s actually younger than he looks; he became a master in his late teens, and zoeya had to make a solid case about him taking the exams to become a master that young. it distanced him from a lot of his peers.

now that he’s older, he gives slightly less of a f*ck, and is fairly outspoken as a grey jedi since he sometimes uses fairly questionable means to accomplish his goals (something zylus takes after him in that regard).

lightsaber is purple. he’s never been prouder. he uses the same style as obi-wan, but has a decent grounding in other styles to throw someone off if he ends up in a duel.

his species is exceedingly rare. to give you an idea of how rare, he’s the only chiss residing within the bounds of known, explored space; his species exists in a difficult to navigate, well isolated patch. it also causes him some minor grief whenever he leaves the temple, since most think he’s just a freak, mutant or a hybrid pantoran.

even funnier is that he’s the only jedi of said species, but is not the only force sensitive of his kind (go read timothy zahn’s latest triology, it’s got some good tidbits at last about how his species views and treats their force sensitive individuals). i know there was a canon chiss jedi padawan but the old star wars canon is a mess i’m not touching with a ten foot pole, or else rythian would have died of happiness to meet another one of his species even if neither of them know anything about them.

his arc revolves around gaining acceptance that sometimes things happen even if we don’t want them to, and that not all answers sought out will give happiness, including the truth.

his backstory was that his parents (a happily married trio, consisting of a fleet commander, a governor and a scientist) made the decision to give him away as a baby due to two events: restless political climate nearly resulting in baby rythian’s death from assasination, and his ridiculous force sensitivity, which immediately marks him for a risky career as a hyperspace navigator once he’s old enough to walk and talk. they don’t hold family ties once they start this career, so.

not wanting to risk their child’s life, his parents sneakily flag down a passing jedi ship carrying one jedi master zoeya (who is a sentient, old af tree, known as ‘neti’). she is very surprised that she is now in charge of an unknown alien infant but understands that for reasons unknown, he is now in her care. for who knows how long.

rythian spends his childhood at jedi temple. he matures way faster than the other kids, and excels in his studies. apparently, that’s normal for his kind, but it’s abnormal to others. it’s made even worse because nobody knows what species he is. he befriends a kel dor named will strife, another padawan after strife stops a couple of older teens from hassling rythian.

zoeya officially takes rythian as her padawan. she also secretly gives him an ecrypted disc containing a basic dictionary and guide to chiss language, the only link rythian has to his parents (aside from the hand stitched blanket and baby clothes). rythian never knows zoeya gives him the disc since it’s left on his bed. it’s the only knowledge he never contributes to the jedi temple’s extensive archives.

stuff happens to zoeya; rythian loses her as a master due to her past trauma catching up. he learns that he’s her third padawan (the second being lomadia, who is still alive); her first died hundreds of years ago, and zoeya’s memories keep overlapping so she’s confusing him for them. she leaves the order after her memory’s adjusted so she can start fresh as a civilian. the last thing she says to him before she goes for treatment are a string of numbers, and a single, nonsensical name. rythian is advised that it’s best not to find her or risk a relapse.

will strife voluntarily leaves the order as well due to pressing circumstances; i.e., a fabricated scandal with him and a well known politician (played by lalnable). rythian gradually accepts that everyone he knows and cares for will eventually leave him. he still maintains strife as a contact after strife takes up a career as a traveling merchant.

rythian takes a teen zylus as a padawan and resolves to do better than zoeya, as a mentor and parental figure. he did bring baby zylus to the temple after all. he keeps an eye on zylus as zylus grows up, occasionally nudging zylus to stay focused.

that said, rythian had his nose in a book during the candidate lightsaber matches, thus narrowly missing zylus leaving. zylus dropped by the libaray on his last day at the temple, which was where rythian found him and dragged him of to get him approved as his official padawan.

zylus successfully graduates, and to rythian’s great relief, he stays to work on the archives with him as a fellow holocron hunter and decrypter.

and then the chosen one, nilesy, arrives at the temple in search of how to best temper his newfound force sensitivity. in tow is ravs, a sith. rythian volunteers to be the sith watchdog, and nilesy’s trainer, and it’s not just because this is his golden chance to hit up a sith for secret forbidden lore or anything.

unfortunately, ravs has no interest in helping rythian unlock sith holocrons; he advises that his fellow sith buddy, daltos, might be of help but he has no idea where said buddy is. this greatly annoys rythian (unbeknowst, several months later, zylus has the honor of said first meeting).

ravs constantly hides in rythian’s room from jedi padawan nanosounds, who is eager to test her formidable lightsaber skills on a sith. rythian eventually gets used to ravs randomly chilling in his room.

he and ravs have a thing. zylus is completely oblivious to it, and nilesy pretends that he’s not aware of it.

rythian decides to go on holiday, which immediately sparks suspicion from everyone because everyone has to literally pry rythian from the archives on a daily basis. ravs secretly tails him, and sees rythian about to board a chiss ship.

afraid of losing him forever, ravs butts in, and discovers that rythain is meeting his parents, who also react to ravs like he’s a threat. rythian persuades his parents that ravs means no harm, and gets ravs permission to board as well.

rythian tries to reconcile with his parents’ decision to ‘abandon’ him, and their aloof attitudes after finally reuniting with them as an adult. he has no memories of them, to their disappointment. he eventually discovers in one of his parent’s offices, a hidden compartment containing two photos of him as a child and padawan.

he confronts his parents, and finds out that zoeya met his parents in secret one more time to deliver these photos. reassured that they’d made the right decision, they ask her to pass on a message: if ry’thia’nuruodo wishes to learn of his heritage, meet us at these coordinates on this day. we shall return yearly, without fail, until we are unable to. this was zoeya’s message, which she’d passed onto him, albeit incomplete.

rythian also has to contend with helping ravs make a good first impression; his parents don’t speak basic (or pretend not to, wanting to test if rythian retained his knowledge of his species’ language), and ravs can’t speak their language. they don’t approve of him having a relationship with ravs since he’s an alien and they don’t know what he’s capable of, but eventually concede that ravs will do since nobody else can match their son’s capabilities.

as for the issue of who exactly rythian’s family members are? i don’t know anything about chiss society so this entirely headcanon. their society is very rigid, and is based on doing your job correctly and loyalty to their houses (ie, family branches). all chiss tend to be fairly straight faced, calm and composed and intelligent individuals. rythian is an exception, which is why he doesn’t initially understand why his parents are so cold to him at first, but clues in eventually that they’re exceedingly subtle about their affection and praises (and insults, too).

his biological father is ry’aratalla’nuruodo (aratalla for short), cedef fleet commander. rythian takes after him in sense of humor, looks and height but inherited all his teeth from his other biological parent, sev’adira’csapla. very level headed, accomodating, quiet and grounded; rythian is a little intimidated by him, and assumes his dad has the final say in everything. this is utterly wrong and his dad is whipped by the other two parents.

sev’adira’csapla (vadirac, or adira) is a colony governor and ship provisions officer. nonbinary, goes by they/them. has a mean, petty and haughty personality, can also be called a tsundere. unfortunately, rythian gets his vanity and dramatic flair from them. he doesn’t get along with them, and the two spend a fair amount of time insulting each other (which adira actually enjoys).

radar’isoto’inrokini (isoto for short, a triple wordplay on ‘risotto’, ‘radar’ and ‘isotope’). rythian’s ‘mother’, in a sense. rythain gets his curiosity and love of knowledge from her. she’s like zoeya; full of optimistism, disarmingly charming, frightening when angered and is actually one of the sharpest minds around. she’s a exceptional mixture of physicist, linguist, biologist, geologist and chemist, being the chief scientific officer serving on the same ship as rythian’s dad. she gets along with ravs a little too well, and takes on the giant task of learning basic so she can communicate with him.

rythian leaves with ravs, having learned a great deal about chiss. he’s supposed to be a big secret since his parents spread a rumor that he died from ‘weak constitution’. he and ravs are to keep everything they learned and visited a secret.

rythian, nilesy and zylus learn of a secret mission to assassinate the sith who’ve been more or less friendly towards nilesy: minty, ravs and daltos. minty escapes, but ravs and daltos aren’t so lucky, resulting in nilesy, rythian and zylus interfering. the three let ravs and daltos escape, causing the three jedi’s standing to plummet within the temple. don’t worry, it doesn’t stay that way for long.

right after the above happens, the clone wars occur. rythian doesn’t meet ravs for months; ravs ghosts him. they end up reuniting on a mission much later when ravs frees him from a seperatist jail at the risk of compromising his cover. it’s a very emotional reunion. ravs is in hiding since he suspects a bigger conspiracy, and has been compiling clues and evidence. he and rythian agreed to meet up and share what they know.

rythian assists nilesy in further training his powers. unfortunately, without ravs counterpoint, there is no balance for nilesy. nilesy is confined to the temple since he can’t take part in any of the life threatening missions.

rythian takes ‘tom’ (angor) as his clone officer. tom assists him in piecing together transmissions and intelligence to send off. ravs passes him information every now and then. rythian is a dad to a clone trooper, okay.

order 66 occurs at the climax of the clone wars. the temple is under siege by a traitor jedi and the clones. rythian and any jedi on the scene attempt to escape. rythian almost dies when tom fails a will check to stop himself from shooting rythian due to order 66. nilesy and ravs pool together their resources and wills to save him.

when all hope is lost, nilesy ascends as a ‘chosen one’, bringing a fragile balance to himself since he failed the galaxy. through his connection in the force, he learns that the other chosen one (thanks, skywalker) went off the deep end. nilesy unlocks the secret of mortis, and drags the survivors of temple massacre inside before closing the rift.

rythian recovers, forgives tom, and stays on as nilesy’s teacher, having successfully saved several important texts and holocrons from the archives prior to leaving the temple.

nilesy wishes to join the rebels once he hears news of them.

i got this far before having to stop due to real life circumstances interfering, and felt that this was a safe stopping point as well.

Hannah Watches LOSH - Child’s Play

Okay, so before I get into the review, let me clarify something on episode order for the next for episodes. The production order was “Child’s Play”, “Lightning Storm”, “Brain Drain” and “The Substitutes”. But the order in which the episodes were released/aired is “Brain Drain”, “Lightning Storm”, “The Substitutes”, and then “Child’s Play”.

I will review these in the production order once again. Now as for why the episode produced first was aired last of the four mixed up episodes, maybe it fell behind schedule and they pushed the others ahead or got in trouble with censors. But some of that seems dubious because of a reference made to it in another episode.

With that in mind, let’s proceed to the review.

Child’s Play

This episode has one of the best openings. Superman and Brainy together at a coffee shop. While Superman comments how he can’t get over 31st century tech, Brainy is getting coffee. Seems a bit like a date. Reason #1 why censors would have refused letting the episode air, maybe? Wait. That must mean that the story boards were gayer for this part...

IF NO ONE HEARS FROM ME AGAIN ASSUME I HAVE DIED ON A SEARCH FOR THE LOSH STORYBOARDS.

However, the muffins that are baking come to life and cause Brainy to drop his coffee. Staff at the coffee shop must have cried at the loss of merchandise.

Going outside, the two see that a building has come to life. When Brainy says it’s a kind of illusion, it starts to rain cats and dogs, literally, making Superman say it feels real.

Brainy says whoever is causing the weirdness, it must be a being with a lot of power. And then we see who it is.

A kid.

When seeing the kid, Brainy says he finds it very unlikely he’s the cause of the “anomalies”.

As a train is about to run into him, the kid zaps it, and it grows wings and flies away.

DENIAL

Watching Superman freeze the wings on the train (he doesn’t let it fall, don’t worry), the kid asks what kind of magic it is.

Aww poor nerd.

Superman comes over and asks the kid who they are. Revealing themselves as Zyx, Superman asks them if they can change everything back, showing several other buildings have been changed.

Zyx does so after saying “I guess.”

I love the “I dunno” sound. Every time.

While Zyx is busy using magic to make little figures appear – including Empress’s eyeball, a green lantern, Doctor Fate’s helmet – Superman and Brainy discuss taking him to the HQ. Brainy does not like the idea, saying it’s bad, but Superman says it will keep him out of trouble.

Going to HQ, we see the three Triplicate Girls playing chess against themselves. First time since… the first episode. Concerning.

Zyx appears and then uses magic on the game.

Rude, Zyx.

And then the pieces start to attack the girls.

When Saturn Girl and Superman enter the room, Zyx proceeds to run. When Saturn Girl tells him to hold still so that she can run a mind probe to find out where he’s from, he says it’s nothing but rules, and he’s having more fun where he is now. Clearly not making things easy.

After making her earrings to big/heavy for her to fly, Superman tries to catch him. And he does this.

JUST DROP HIM IN FRONT OF B5’S ROOM AND HE MIGHT BELIEVE IN MAGIC.

Brainy and Phantom Girl are then seen discussing Zyx’s powers. Brainy says the source is inconclusive, despite running an analysis. When Phantom Girl suggests its magic, he makes this face.

Oh Brainy.

Phantom Girl then says her mom once told her about a sorcerer’s world. So does this mean her mom is sharing sensitive info, or that B5 just excluded places that claim to use magic in his analysis?

OMG HIS FACE AT THE END

He then says it wouldn’t hurt to double check, and tells her to call her mom.

Sounds a little upset there.

At least we finally see Phantom Girl’s room. And it sounds like Mom has dealt with messes Phantom Girl has been involved in. Privileged but misunderstood act again?

Saying that if Zyx is from Zarok and that they would be in serious trouble, Winema tells Phantom Girl that the people there are backwards and dangerous when she asks if they can just call them up to pick Zyx up. She then further adds Zarok severed ties with the UP centuries ago, AND unless Zyx decides to move on, they are stuck with him.

After she leaves her room, we see that Comet and Cupid have escaped captivity at the zoo. Lightning Lad says it looks like the cages malfunctioned, and Phantom Girl comments it took a week for SP to catch them.

The SP is not good at their job.

Judging by how he goes “Yee-Haw!” when going to catch them, I’m Bouncing Boy watches western movies though.

When Zyx tries to join them to catch Comet and Cupid as well, Lightning Lad tells him to stay out of trouble.

Wonder how that’s going to work out.

When Superman, Saturn Girl and Bouncing Boy catches one of them – I’m sorry but I haven’t seen any obvious distinction between the two pets – he calls Brainy up to ask if the barrier at the zoo was fixed.

But Brainy says they were perfectly fine.

He’s taking up the older brother position~

But rather doing as he’s told, Zyx starts goofing around, in a Superman-like outfit, with a Z instead of an S.

Oof. The pets beating him up is apparently becoming routine.

When it seems like the pet is going to charge at him straight on, Saturn Girl makes it sleep.

It also makes the cutest snoring sound

While Superman tries to calmly talk to him about what he just did, Lightning Lad snaps, saying someone could have gotten hurt. Phantom Girl tries to calm him down, but he says if Zyx can’t follow rules, he should go home. A little overboard with how angry he got. Then again he was almost eaten.

Zyx is not happy with that, and proceeds to turn Lightning Lad into a rat. And then he turns into a cat. And eats him.

But thankfully, Lightning Lad gets out of Zyx mouth with his lightning powers. But Zyx chases after him, trying to zap him with magic again.

Bouncing Boy gets into the middle of it, telling them to break it up. But Zyx then does this.

Superman tells him to change them back, but Zyx refuses.

Queen of faces.

Brainy tries to capture Zyx, but his arms are turned into snakes, which Superman pins down for a while, telling him this isn't what superheroes do.

I love the way he says that. Plus, considering villain songs tend to be the best songs, he’s got a point.

We finally see Superman learn one of his weaknesses. His vulnerability to magic.

Seeing this, Phantom Girl decides to go to Zarok to find help, and Saturn Girl makes a diversion to give her time to get away.

Poor Superman.

... Here are the screenshots of his face when spooked.

Saturn Girl makes an illusion of her to distract Zyx, but he makes a telescope to see through it, and then sets a bunch of flying alarm clocks on her. I would have straight up murdered him for that.

But he then sees Phantom Girl escaping to the cruiser which Triplicate Girl brought, tries to stop her, but fails as the cruiser goes into a wormhole. Then throws a tantrum she got away.

Of course, nothing is that easy.

Claiming he was getting bored of the Legion, Zyx then looks at the rest of New Metropolis. Oh geez.

Returning to Phantom Girl and Triplicate Girls (the ship is full of her now), we see that Winema comes on the line to talk with her daughter. There is no sign of Zarok though.

But we do get a bit of a bonding moment with Winema and Phantom girl though. Apparently Winema’s first mission in Open Service was to reconnect with Zarok, around the same age Phantom Girl was, and says she failed.

Just when she says diplomacy won’t work with Zarok, a British/Scottish officer of Zarok arrives. When Phantom Girl says she’s on an urgent mission, he tells her she’ll have to go to the high council. And when she complains she can’t find the planet, he reveals it to her.

Back at Earth. Zyx has made himself a giant and is stomping around the whole place.

But the magic he casted on most of the Legion is wearing off.

Brainy is a precious nerd.

MY POOR SON

Bouncing Boy states his concern on what a whole planet of magical beings will do to Phantom Girl.

Which we then see is paper work. And sending her to a long line for appeals.

And then she is sent to Customs. Where she fights a bunbun.

What a tough bunbun.

While she gets approval, PG is still sent to the appeal line.

Luckily though, someone from the Council gives her the OK to let them hear her.

Back at earth again, we see Superman manages to knock over Zyx, but then Zyx hits him with magic.

OH ****

Superman is saved from being squashed by Saturn Girl, who then tries to talk Zyx into stopping, but he refuses. Little brat.

Aww poor nerd.

However, Bouncing Boy puts himself between B5 and Zyx said that his victory wasn’t much because he messed with their powers.

After Zyx tells them he can bet them full strength any day, Superman tells him to prove it.

Agreeing to it, Zyx chucks him to a baseball stadium, gives his Superpowers back and turns into a drake that breaths fire.

Rescuing you and science.

Or buying time, likes Saturn Girl says.

Phantom Girl meanwhile gets the Council to agree on going to retrieve Zyx. But the bylaws determine her presence as a hostile act. And that the UP and Zarok are at war now. Wow. That place needs to brush up on the laws.

We take a quick break from Zarok to check back on Earth, where Superman freezes Zyx for a moment, then gets caught by him in starfish form (I know im wrong on what Zyx is suppose to be but gimme some slack), then uses heat vison on him.

After Zyx changes forms several times, he decides to make a statue come to life with Superman’s powers.

Getting back to the Council on Zarok, PG tries to talk to them to stop the attack. The main guy seems to be sympathetic, but they are bound.

Oh Tinya.

But then we hear from one of the council members that the rules can neither be altered or amended. Oh. That explains a lot.

And back at Earth, again, we see while he’s sitting back, Zyx is starting to break a bit of a sweat. When Saturn Girl does a mind probe, she finds that Zyx’s powers are being put in a big strain. Which B5 says that if they all attack at once, they could push him over.

After that, Brainy starts up the Stadiums operating system, turning the lights on to max. And the microphone/speakers, which Bouncy takes advantage of.

Returning to Zarok, the Council tells PG that they will get Zyx back after the war. With that info, she uses her position as a representative of the UP to surrender, which has the Council head call off the attack.

You had to do it gurl.

Switching back to Earth, Zyx is unable to focus as the Legion keeps wearing him down. Finally reaching is limit, he turns into a bomb and goes off. And passes out.

When Superman is questioning how to clean up the mess Zyx was responsible for, the Council’s head arrives and does it for them.

Poor trash baby.

Council Head apologizes to Winema and the Legion for Zyx, and praises Phantom Girl to her mom. And states it is time for Zarok to open up with the United Planets. Winema seems stunned, but manages to compose herself.

Oh… don’t tell me they were… BRAIN DONT GO THERE

We know where Phantom Girl got her facial expressions now at least.

So final thoughts on the episode overall and characters

While this episode has its moments, I feel it is one of the weak ones of the whole show.

Still no clear answers why it came out as the last episode of the four that got mixed up.

I just don’t enjoy it overall as much as other episodes. Mostly because there isn’t much character development.

Zarok overall was interesting to look at. Despite how messed up it was with laws. And the people in the Council had cool designs as well. Now concerning the head guy - I liked how he was held up by his cape rather than standing up, but I’m pretty sure part of his outfit is Egyptian-inspired.

Now I’m not of Egyptian descent, so I don’t have any right to say what is appropriating the culture and what isn’t, but the outfit is slightly concerning, given the guy seems to be white.

Nice recall on Comet and Cupid, as short as it was.

Zyx as a villain… is not very strong, in comparison to other villains in the show. He’s mostly a brat. A psychopathic brat. Who at this point, shouldn’t have magic. But he’s so energetic, which can be fun to watch.

And he gets the grumpiest Brainy reactions out to date.

Speaking of our little green nerd, we see that he is very dubious about magic and only admits Zyx’s powers are magic to get Zyx to stop rampaging. Aww. But we also see him getting coffee, so that means Coluans can consume food to some extent in this universe.

Bouncing Boy is so good to see. He was willing to put himself between Brainy who had just humiliated himself by admitting Zyx’s powers are magic and the kid who splattered him on the wall. He will protect his friends from all harm. I would give my life for him.

We also finally see Triplicate Girl again. After 6 episodes – which causes a bit of alarm. In terms of her role in this episode, it’s very minimal. Adding this to reasons why this episode is one of the weaker ones.

Lightning Lad can’t catch a break. He nearly gets eaten by one of the pets, and then gets turned into a rat, nearly eaten alive by Zyx, caught in Bouncing Boy splatter, and stays under Zyx’s spell the longest. If anything, he was in a form that portrays him accurately. Now regarding his outburst, it was a bit of a overreaction and wasn’t going to work with Zyx. But given what we learn later on, I think I have a general idea what was going through his head. Will discuss in next review so I don’t spoil anything.

With Saturn Girl, we get another hint on her limits to her powers. In the second episode, she needed Timber Wolf to be calm, and in this episode she needed Zyx to stay still. So it’s easier for her to use her powers on people when they are relaxed. Does that go for really personal stuff or just the basics?

Because in the second episode, she used it to figure out what happened to Timber Wolf, and was going to use it to figure out where Zyx was from. Now Timber Wolf was obviously more difficult given how traumatic it was, but who knows.

I’m not sure if this is what Superman needed after Drax. On one hand, Zyx doesn’t have the same creep factor Drax does – thank god. But he learned one thing about his abilities, and that the invulnerability does not extend to magic. And he learned it the hard way.

So… he got one answer at least.

But let’s discuss the part when he loses his powers.

In episode one, he is doing everything he can to hide them from everyone, despite using them for good. And then he comes to the 31st century, where he doesn’t have to hide them. And then he loses them. He probably would have more conflicted feelings about no longer having his powers in the beginning of episode one. But now, he’s comfortable with them. He’s managing to adjust to them, and knows they are important. So he’s more horrified now.

But even when he doesn’t have powers, he still challenges Zyx. This boy has gotten a much-needed confidence boost from Episode 1. I’m so proud of him.

And then we get Phantom Girl and her Mom.

We see Phantom Girl can act diplomatically, even with an insane society like Zarok, which probably helps in missions a lot. I think it also showed when she tries to get Lightning Lad to calm down (before he turned into a rat). Because I don’t think yelling at Zyx was going to help, and she knew that.

But she is not the best at keeping her cool. But it’s completely understandable, given she was sent to the appeal line at her freak out moment, after surviving a fight with a bunbun.

Plus we also see she’s good at last minute thinking. Her ideas may not always be the best, but they work.

Now with Winema, we see her in a different position from Champions. Rather than trying to set her up with guys, she is trying to give her daughter guidance on sensitive issues like the UP’s relation with Zarok. And scolding her at some points in the episode.

Regarding the fact that she never told PG about her attempt to open communication up with Zarok, I think she wants to be someone for her daughter to look up at. Which probably implies not mentioning her failures when she was younger.

Plus, we never get one mention of a dad in the picture. So i think it’s possible Winema is a single mom. Go Winema.

And at the end, we see that she has the same facial expression as her daughter. What a good touch of detail.

Here we are again.

Easy reading - Plot-heavy is how I personally consider the plot’s intricacy and successful implementation, regardless of the author’s intention.

Golden Stage

Author: Cang Wu Bin Bai

Quality: 6

Enjoyment: 7

Comments: This one has some Sha Po Lang vibes, but the characters have more depth and chemistry. The word 'more' here is extremely relative because it's still pretty shallow. I honestly liked them both, I liked the relationship and the psuedo-rude way that they flirt entertained me. As for the plot...ehhhh. It tried. There were things that worked, but in general the plot seemed disjointed from the characters and there were a few things that had no business being there and just muddied the waters. It's not bad necessarily, it's just not very smooth. There are better political intrigues to read if that's what you want. But if you just want some sugar-sweet fluff with a backdrop of drama, then this one is perfect. My favorite scene was probably the flashback to the first few times they met, absolutely fantastic.

Would I read it again: Nah.

Enjoyment: 6

Comments: This one is kind of weird because it's definitely competent, it's well-written and has a fairly in-depth plot, but I just didn't really enjoy it all that much? I never got emotionally attached to any of the characters, and I didn't even really get the relationship buildup. I understand what the author is going for with it of course, but it didn't necessarily make a lot of sense… Or rather it seems like some bits in the middle were just missing, there's good buildup in the beginning and in the end but how they got from point A to point B was kind of not explored to my satisfaction. I did really like the flashback to the past, I thought that storyline was all pretty interesting. The big bad was kind of disappointing to me as well though. In general, I think this is a really good book with a lot of skill behind it but it's just not really my thing.

Would I read it again: No.

Fox Demon Cultivation Manual

Author: Feng Ge Qie Xing

Quality: 8

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: This was a delightful romp. I had expected it to be somewhat silly and was pleasantly surprised. It was heavy enough to be engaging but light enough to be an easy read, with multiple spots that made me literally laugh out loud which does not happen often. This is apparently just one book in a series of same universe novels, and a lighter-hearted one at that. I would be interested to read the others because I found the world pretty engaging, and I do want to know what became of the other characters. Overall I found it very fun and very cute, I read it in four days so that says something. On the downside, the link for chapter 9 is broken. But skipping a chapter doesn't seem to have affected the experience of the novel as a whole.

Would I read it again: Yeah I think I would be willing to read this again someday. If it gets adapted I would also consume adaptations, in addition to being interested in the other connected works.

This is a long post with my more in-depth reviews of all the danmei/baihe novels I’ve read. Although it’s still only a paragraph each. I could do really in-depth reviews of stuff if people cared or if I felt like it, but those would definitely have to be their own posts.

In future updates of my graph, I’ll put these down below a read-more and only show the review for the newest entry. Also after this, I’ll only be tagging the newest one because otherwise things will get nuts.

So anyway, my Thoughts:

Mo Dao Zu Shi

Quality: 9.5

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: I have a huge emotional connection to this novel. There are some weak parts, the tension isn’t quite even, she’s pretty terrible at erotic scenes and not great at fight scenes...but that being said, I love the characters and some of the plot points really ripped my heart out. This is a novel that’s really driven by the characters so if you’re a character-focused person like me, definitely look into it (as if we all don’t already know it lmao). I really, really love this story. Every single adaptation of it has also been great, but the novel is still my favorite. It was my introduction to xianxia novels too, so you can say it changed my life!

Comments: I love this book...but not as much as I love Mo Dao Zu Shi. I think the plot is somewhat typical, however the characters are great once again (though maybe slightly less deep than MDZS), and her use of thematic repetition and foreshadowing are killer. Actually, I liked this book more the second time around because it just hits differently. Definitely the best of MXTX’s couples, they are so soft and sweet. Very long, but worth it.

Would I read it again: I already have, was personally translating the manhua before I hurt my arms, and am eagerly awaiting the donghua this fall!

The Villain’s White Lotus Halo

Comments: Fuck, I love this one so much.....even though it’s also a system novel. But that part is in it so rarely that it reads more like pure fantasy. I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the way the relationship is developing. Oh yeah, the translation isn’t even complete but I already purchased not only the original from JJWXC but also the print edition. I’ve even drawn fanart for it, which is so unlike me. Every time a chapter comes out, I’m ruined for the rest of the day, I can’t think about anything else. Good fight scenes, which is uncommon. My favorite danmei novel so far.

Would I read it again: I fully intend to once the translation is complete, and also plan to read it in Chinese later (I’ve already read certain parts in Chinese hahaha but not the whole thing)

2Ha (Husky and his White Cat Shizun)

Author: Meatbun Doesn’t Eat Meat

Enjoyment: 10

Comments: 2Ha is not for the faint of heart, it’s very horny, and violent, and has a lot of questionable content. However I love it so much. The story and characters are great, Meatbun really has me by the heart. The writing is a little more on the casual side but it hardly matters because the story is so great. Good fight scenes. Chu Wanning is like, the ultimate Me(tm) character, I hate how much I adore him. If you read this, just go into it knowing that it’s a long emotional journey, the characters are very dynamic and there’s a lot of character development.

Di Wang Gong Lue

Comments: This is one of the most terribly written things I’ve ever read, but I’m a character girl and the characters and ways they interact fucking kill me. I’m constantly entertained....although I don’t think this is actually supposed to be a comedy. If I were going to treat myself and like, take a bubble bath and read something that made me laugh, this is exactly the sort of trashy romance I would want to read. Technically a political intrigue story but it’s so abrupt and full of holes, are any of us reading it for the actual plot? The donghua is on Youtube, I watched it first and recommend others to do the same. If you can handle that, you can handle the book because it’s exactly the same in quality, just gayer. I do love the main couple a lot, the set-up surrounding the relationship is great, and the side characters are also really fun.

Comments: I love Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, thought the plot was interesting, and there were some enjoyable moments. But it has all the problems I usually have with Priest in addition to some choices that offend me as a queer reader. I spent about 75% of the time reading while pissed off. And actually the fact that it had a happy ending kinda bummed me out because I love a good tragedy. Overall, I can only give it an average score. If you like Priest, you'll like this one too. I’m not a tv person but I binged the hell out of the live action, I really loved it, so I was sort of disappointed that the source material didn’t seem as strong as I had assumed.

Would I read it again: No, but I will happily watch the live action again some day.

I have finished Jing Wei Qing Shang so it’s update time again~

I’m taking a few days off before I start anything new, but the next thing on my list is about a quarter of the length so it won’t take long once I start.

Easy reading - Plot-heavy is how I personally consider the plot’s intricacy and successful implementation, regardless of the author’s intention.

Would I read it again: 100%, I absolutely intend to read this again sometime in the future. It's very long and very dense but delightful and ultimately worth it.
