Q&A: AirOtic Creators Talk Sexy, Cirque-Style Show
Logo TV founder Matt Farber’s Outlandish performance series continues on Thursday, Feb. 14 with AirOtic, the sexy cirque-style show, at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale.
In 2016, Stephane and his husband Kyle Kier conceived and developed an LGBT production, AirOtic, that debuted on an Atlantis Events gay cruise. Over the past two years, the troupe have become the most popular act for Atlantis.
Recently, they partnered with Logo Founder Matt Farber to bring this incredible production to American audiences that enjoy a gay sensibility and the new production will debut as part of Outlandish Fort Lauderdale.
A custom scaffolding was constructed to allow the performers to fly over the heads of audiences seated in the Sunshine Cathedral. And, unlike other large acrobatic circuses, AirOtic only features six performers who are not hidden behind masks allowing the audience to develop a connection with each performer.
It was a pleasure to sit down with Stephane and Kyle for this Hotspots exclusive interview:
When did each of you start with acrobatics?
Stephane – I was competing from when I was 6 to 17 and after that I quit competing to work in show business. My first job was an acrobat in an opera.
Kyle – I started when I was 3 and I competed early on. I stopped when I was 13 and started diving competitively. When I graduated high school in 2009, I moved to Orlando (from Rochester, NY) and started working at Disney as an acrobat. AirO
When and how did you meet?
Stephane – we met through my company that I created. Kyle came to work as a summer gig for 3 months and from then we stayed together.
Was it love at first site?
Kyle – for me yes. Once I got to Europe my friends told me you can’t be in a relationship with your boss, but I didn’t listen to them. I stayed and we have been together ever since.
When did you get married?
In September 2016 in New York. We also got married in France.
Since you met, did you always work together?
Yes, we are inseparable.
How did you come up with AirOtic?
It started because we participated in “Italy’s Got Talent,” and I proposed on live TV. At that time there were no Gay rights in Italy, so it was a taboo situation. Afterwards everybody freaked out, but the video went viral and we got over 4.5 million views. We also got a lot of interviews and exposure. I was working on a lot of cruise lines and I got contacted by NCL to do a surprise act on the Atlantis Cruise line. The owner of Atlantis, Rich Campbell, saw it and wanted to book us in his other cruises. I told him I will come up with a full show, and he loved the idea. There is where AirOtic was born.
youtube
You wear very little clothes, do you ever get shy?
Stephane – I have never been shy, my dad is always naked on the couch watching TV.
Kyle – I was never shy either, I am a performer.
What makes AirOtic different from other acrobatic shows?
Its sexy, it’s sensual, and since the cast is so small you fall in love with each of the performers. When you leave the theater, you are not only thinking about the acrobatics, but about love and human rights.
What does the future hold for the two of you?
Fort Lauderdale is going to be the first time we do the show in the United Stated on land. We did the show in Barcelona this summer and it was so well received. We expected it to be a gay audience, but there were many straight people who fully embraced the show. So in the future, we plan to take this show all over the world.
Also, our company, Les Sarsadais, has over 120 performers. We have show’s all over the world, including many mainstream cruise lines.
AirOtic plays as part of the Outlandish Performance Series at the Sunshine Cathedral from Thursday – Saturday, Feb. 14 – 16; Friday – Saturday, Feb. 22 – 23, 8 pm.
