—𝐈𝐋𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐈.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
>>Legend has it that, before everything, there was darkness. The primitive men suffered under the cruelty of the evil geniuses and demons that roamed hidden by Gaueko, the eternal night; they came out of their caves and tormented them to their pleasure. Unable to fend themselves, the men pleaded to Amalur, the personification of Earth, to help them, and She granted them a precious gift: Ilargi (“light of the Dead”), the Moon deity. Her light shone so white that demons and geniuses burned and fled, and for a while, the primitive men where at peace.

The Gaueko [Basque mythology]!
Tumblr media
The enigmatic Gaueko is a creature from native Basque mythology. He has been described as a demon or a spirit, and he is the one who watches over the world at night, as darkness and nighttime are his elements.
It was the Gaueko who set the rules on what people are or aren’t allowed to do during nighttime in Basque religion and he would punish people who broke those taboos. People who left their homes at night, for example, could end up punished by this spirit.
Though the Gaueko sometimes manifests as a sentient gust of wind, he can also transform into a cow. Most modern illustrations of him depict the creature as a monstrous dog, however, but I’m uncertain where that idea came from. I’m not ruling out that this is a modern addition.
Tumblr media
Sometimes he abducts people to an unknown fate. There is at least one story about a girl who went out to fetch water and never came home.
At some point, the pitcher she had been carrying was thrown down the chimney of her house, and the girl was never heard from again, as she had been taken by the Gaueko.
Though he is usually a villain, the Gaueko is not strictly evil and has even been known to help people in need.

Mythic Creatures by Culture & Region
Part 3: Europe (Basque, Rome, Viking, Great Britain)
This list documents mythological and folkloric creatures of Ancient Europe, the British Isles and Scandinavia as found on Wikipedia.
European creatures from Eastern Europe, France, Germany, Italy, Greece etc. will be listed in a separate post. The same goes for Biblical creatures or creatures from Abrahamic religions and Goetia literature. The full list of creatures is here.
Basque
Basque people live in what is today northern Spain. Their language is the only surviving language in Europe that isn't part of the Indo-European family tree, likely because the Basques live in secluded mountain areas. I have listed some deities alongside creatures, but this is a full list of Wikipedia's Basque creatures, not a full list of Wikipedia's gods/goddesses/deities for Basque culture.
