2022 Anime Watch: Summer Schedule
The weather is heating up once again! Time to crack open what I have planned this season.
June
Anime-Gataris (2017)
(Look, I needed to watch more anime involving Anchan, okay?)
July
Tropical Rouge! Precure (2021)
AS IF JULY CANNOT GET ANY CLOSER...the only Toei anime I'll allow this year as punishment for almost ruining a guy's career on Youtube.
Tumblr media
If you thought having Furirin and Mimorin in Healin Good was a treat, THINK AGAIN. TROPICAL ROUGE RAISES YOU SORAMARU AND TOMORIRU (in the movie).
Tumblr media
(Saki Sakuragawa, I'M COMING FOR YOU.)
Tumblr media
August
Originally, I would have done a break, but instead, it'll be more of a film festival sort of thing. There are some titles in mind, including:
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Tumblr media
(Listen, I've really put this one off because of unexpected reasons, but two things are urging me to see this: Yoko Honna and Country Roads (the latter is a huge deal to me even though I'm not from West Virginia although I'm in a part of Pennsylvania full of Mountaineer pride that cannot be ignored).
189 (2021)*
This is one I'm interested in after reading an article earlier this year pertaining to Ai Furihata's involvement with the film (mainly the insert song, 東から西へ). Also, the topic of child abuse in Japan kinda caught my curiosity.
Kimagure Orange Road (1987)
Tumblr media
The main anime watch for this month, as I'm trying to immerse even deeper into 80s anime territory. Plus, this was supposedly referenced in CITY but I cannot 100% confirm it.
Orange (2016)
This one is a possible mini-watch, but this had some high remarks. Once again, you're noticing a trend between this one and the previous two titles.
*Only if the film is available online; released in November 2021 (?)
Now, one more title is planned for the schedule, but this may be postponed to October (if the season finale is not released in time). However, this is not an anime, but an original webseries I've been wanting to watch since the idea kept popping around here and Youtube over the years. Personally, I was skeptical of watching it, due to its adult content, but once again, after Saberspark's review on this, I had to watch it for myself.
(No, I will get to Meta Runner S3 too, but...)
Tumblr media
(Stay tuned for more information in late July).
For now, look forward to one heck of a summer coming in a week. Here's hoping my mind survives the heat this year. Also, please remember to drink lots of water; heat exhaustion ain't fun.

FEATURE: Fan Passion and Otaku Humor Run Wild in Anime-Gataris
Out with the new, in with the old, as the saying certainly doesn't go! It's a new year and “Cruising the Crunchy-Catalog” is resolved to leaving 2020 in the dust by cleaning up our respective queues and watching a few anime series that we may have missed back when they were initially broadcasting.
Join us this week as we check out Anime-Gataris, a fall 2017 TV anime that takes a simple premise — a group of high school students form an anime club and then try to protect it from a student council that wants to shut it down — and flips the whole thing on its head with increasingly fourth-wall-breaking humor.
Tumblr media
    What's Anime-Gataris?
Anime-Gataris is a 2017 TV anime with direction by Kenichirou Morii and animation production by Wao World. Crunchyroll describes the story of the series as follows:
Just as soon as she enters Sakaneko Private High School, Asagaya Minoa is dragged into the anime club by her classmate, Kamiigusa Alice, even though she knows next to nothing about anime. A classmate, Kouenji Miko, along with other anime-loving senpais, quickly turn her into an anime fan. Fighting off the incessant shut-down threats of the student council, and completely oblivious to the coming apocalypse, the anime club talks about anime in the club, at Akihabara, at anime Meccas, and at hot springs.
Written in katakana, gatari can mean “talk” or “recital” (i.e. chatting about anime), but it can also refer to the sound of clashing and banging around, so Anime-Gataris is a series that begins with some pleasant conversation and builds to an explosion of absurd situations and scenarios.
Tumblr media
    Fandom Clubs.
The primary layer of comedy in Anime-Gataris is observational humor. The series begins with the protagonist, Minoa, trying to remember the name of an anime that she saw as a kid based only on a loose description of the climactic final scene, and her efforts to track down this tidbit of trivia result in her getting press-ganged into the local anime scene.
Having run a high school anime club myself many years ago, I can say with authority that Anime-Gataris perfectly captures the exact sort of goofy arguments and clashing personalities that such an organization attracts. The series also spoofs anime-adjacent activities (such as idol culture and cosplay), so if you want to see your favorite pastimes get gently roasted, be sure to tune in.
Tumblr media
    Anime Hearts.
Anime-Gataris doesn't confine its humor to simply chronicling fan spaces, fan interests, and fan behaviors. The series also digs into the technical side of anime production, promotion, and distribution in an effort to tickle the funny bone, in the process tackling subjects such as anime tourism pilgrimages and even the dreaded challenge that is Summer Comiket.
Anime-Gataris celebrates the artistic achievements that anime creators strive for while also emphasizing the tremendous amount of work and crushingly tight schedules that are involved in anime production. Even the janky, no budget flash anime that the club produces for the school festival involves months of back-breaking labor and coordinated effort, and Anime-Gataris mines plenty of grim jokes from this process.
Tumblr media
    Weirdness in Spades.
Anime-Gataris really ramps up when it dives headlong into meta-textual humor with jokes that poke fun at the conventions of the anime medium and the foibles of its fandom. Within the context of the show, this is explained by the “reality” of anime bleeding into the everyday life of Minoa and her friends, resulting in innumerable sight, structural, and situational gags.
It's easy to include jokes that break the fourth wall, but Anime-Gataris plays the invasion of anime tropes into the real world like a brush with existential horror as Minoa reacts with increasing distress at each bizarre escalation, such as when her friends' faces spontaneously assume ‘90s-style character designs. The shape of the series itself — its narrative structure, character designs, pacing, etc. — becomes part of the gag.
Tumblr media
    The Gift of Gab.
Crunchyroll currently streams Anime-Gataris in 51 territories worldwide. The series is available in the original Japanese language with subtitles in English, Latin American Spanish, and Portuguese. The series is also released on Bluray in the United States by Funimation, and this home video version includes an English language dub.
Although it takes a bit for the series to fully rev up and begin firing on all cylinders, if you stick with it, Anime-Gataris becomes a transformative comedy experience whose later developments will rattle your brain and force you to look at the earlier episodes in a completely different light. If that kind of meta-textual humor appeals to you, and if the series is available in your area, then please consider giving Anime-Gataris a try.
Tumblr media
Thanks for joining us for the most recent entry of “Cruising the Crunchy-Catalog”. Be sure to tune in next time, when we set sail for adventure with a look back at High School Fleet, a spring 2016 TV anime that puts the moe in mutiny.
Is there a series in Crunchyroll's catalog that you think needs some more love and attention? Please send in your suggestions via email to [email protected] or post a Tweet to @gooberzilla. Your pick could inspire the next installment of “Cruising the Crunchy-Catalog!"

What Was the Most Mediocre Anime in 2016?
Hello again! And welcome back to another article of Super Anime Suplex. The blog where sometimes I have to poop; but I don’t right now, so here we are.
Tumblr media
Today we’re here on a FOURTH post looking back on the 2016 year in anime. Here’s links to post 1: 2016 Animes of Mention, 2: Best Anime of the Year, and 3: The Worst Anime of 2016. This time we’ll be addressing the WINNER of the MOST MEDIOCRE anime of 2016. WHAT WAS THE MOST MEDIOCRE ANIME OF 2016? Well, there were a lot of animes that fell in the middle. But if we’re talking mediocre animes, there’s one that stands above all the rest.
Myriad Colors Phantom World
Tumblr media
There’s something just Average about this show. From our protagonist to the scattered plot, down to the split between delicate storytelling and pointless fanservice. Myriad Colors is, in many ways, a masterpiece of mediocrity. There’s a good amount of this...
Tumblr media
Even the animators are trying to save this show from being too cliche.
Tumblr media
But of course, one can’t simply pass up a perfect opportunity to have Mai STIMULATE HER CHI??? Or something, by rubbing her sides. The way it’s framed you’d never guess this had anything to do with some special ability.
Yet, mixed in with all that is some of this...
Tumblr media
Sexy fight scenes (SOMETIMES), but always accompanied with a color palette that would make any art major ecstatic. This show utilizes color really well, kind of reminds me of the Nisemonogatari Karen Bee OP (which I’ll link HERE). Albeit, I still have a soft spot for the -gatari series Art direction so I still don’t think it’s as good.
Tumblr media
Time’s when this show punches you in the feels no matter who the fuck you are. Unless, you hate kids. But even if that’s true...
Tumblr media
It’ll get you with the friendship shit at some point. It’s well animated and drawn, it feels both natural and emotional. Then, if neither of those things get you in the feel-box there’s Episode 7 (Which you can watch on Crunchyroll Free, linked HERE) which for some reason really get’s me. Not to the point of tears mind you, this ain’t no CLANNAD or ANO HANA. But that episode is really quite nice.
If it seems like I’m being easy on this anime, it’s because I am. I actually quite enjoyed it. But there’s no denying that it’s a...
FUCKING MEDIOCRE
ANIME
**AT BEST**
-”basically a fact, in broad terms”
Tumblr media
The biggest issue here is that the format of the series doesn’t really compliment the plot or story. By this I mean, it follows a similar format to Cowboy Bebop (and many other animes, I’m just picking a famous example), but that format doesn’t work well here because of how it’s applied. The series tries to follow the format of different short stories in each episode, that are often UNRELATED, but work together to form a story. In Bebop this works stunningly because we realize near the end that every episode, while seemingly unconnected to each other, comprise pieces which form the greater plot; revolving around Spike. In Myriad Colors though, we have similar disconnected episodes; but they contribute ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the overall plot. Then, near the end of the 12 episode run they just shove the plot in your face. Like, YEAH OK, IT WAS IMPORTANT THE WHOLE TIME WITH THE PHANTOMS AND WHATEVER. IT WAS ALL CONNECTED. Or some bullshit like that.
I don’t really need to make much of a case here, because I think it’s obvious to any viewer that the plot sort of just shows up. The whole format of the show simply doesn’t aid that format. It just begs the question, “Is this like... Overall plot? Or just plot for this story? Like is this plot only relevant for the next few episodes? Or is it all encompassing?” Questions that arise because the series up to this point has cultured us to think in the form of short stories. Since we can’t make a connection between the short stories and a greater plot device, the scenario loses its luster.
Tumblr media
If you can ignore that though, I think the short stories are all quite fun to watch. sometimes you get some completely ridiculous shit though. Like the episode where PERVERTED MONKEYS? Take over some Hot Springs and the fanservice and jokes ensue. It was OK, but MEDIOCRE comedy at best.
To conclude, there’s nothing totally BAD about Myriad Colors Phantom World, there’s just nothing totally GREAT either. It’s got equal parts of both. You’ll watch it and you won’t be DYING for the next season. No ideas will be fluttering in your head about what’ll happen next. You probably won’t have a strong desire to binge this series either. You’ll watch it and say, yeah, that was pretty all right. It’s just straight up Mediocre. I give it a 6/10 because I still quite liked it; but even I can admit it’s mediocre at best.
Tumblr media
But hey, mediocre anime has a special place in my heart. Sometimes it’s just what I want. I’m not always looking to laugh at BAD anime, or be enthralled by GREAT anime. It’s nice to have a middle man. And if you’re looking for one from 2016. I’d have to recommend...
MYRIAD COLORS PHANTOM WORLD
THANKS FOR READING! I HAVE TO POOP NOW!  I think there’s a lot of anime in 2016 to note and recommend so if there’s any you guys haven’t seen or heard of that I can introduce to you; I want to do so.

If you want to read more of this type of content, then FOLLOW my Blog. That way, you can read more of my content as soon as I write it. But you totally knew that already (^౪)/
Also, if you have something you’d like to tell me; you can. Shhhh, it’s OK. We have a feature for that, you can use the MESSAGE feature to MESSAGE me whenever!   (°ヮ°)
