Auntie Em, it’s a twista!!! The Garmin Olathe Marathon in the Land of Oz sure lived up to its name! It sure felt like a twister at times with constant winds sometimes up to 30mph! A tough day of racing for me, but I finished, and even stayed sub-3:50. Unofficially a 3:46:48! #MarathonNumber26 #StateNumber23 #OzRun #GarminOlatheMarathon #VisitOlathe @garmin @garminmarathon #lego #marathon #wizardofoz https://www.instagram.com/p/CcuCO32ua40/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wickedly Fast Half Marathon
Today I ran my first half marathon! It all started last year when one of my friends from grad school attempted to make running believers out of everyone else, and sent an open invitation to train for a 5K, half or full marathon. All of these races were at the same event, the Garmin Marathon. It's a super fun entry level race with a Wizard of Oz theme! Last year some health issues got in the way of running the 5K I wanted to train for, but I went to cheer on my friends. One completed the 5K, and two completed the half marathon! I was totally inspired and decided then that I would run the half the following year. One year later and after 12 weeks of training, I have completed my first half in 2:45. In this process I have learned a lot about myself. Getting past the mental block of 5 miles was the hardest part. I have actually learned to enjoy running and realized that I can actually turn my brain off and not think of anything while I'm running, which is quite relaxing. I love to run outside and enjoy nature. Right now, I'm going to rest and work on staying healthy! I have some goals for the next one, and that is to do more interval and conditioning to get my heart rate to a respectable level. Running is a huge investment, but I love the way it makes me feel about myself: confident and beautiful!

Garmin OZ Marathon (Dorothy Dash 5K) + INSANITY: Day 41
Today was the Garmin Marathon and I ran the 'Dorothy Dash 5K' (which I ran last year)!
I had all my clothes/equipment/etc set out (as I usually do before a race) the night before. Why? It saves time and my hubby and daughter are asleep while I am getting ready. This included:
Sports bra/running underwear
Longer black socks
Running Nike shoes (first time using these at a race but definitely broken-in) with time chip attached (orange square)
Spandex long pants
Shorts - more warmth/less booty showing-off
Compression long sleeve shirt with thumbholes
Coat with bib pinned on (I put on before leaving the house)
Sunglasses (I remembered these this year)
iPhone (obviously) and headphones
Garmin FR 70 and heart rate monitor
Caffeine pills
Ear-covering headband (it is cold out there)
I had one of my two alarms set for this morning - this one slightly early. Eek. However, I was up before the alarm at 4am since I was asleep by about 10pm last night. :)
I took two of my Prolab caffeine pills (one equals 2 cups of coffee) and ate a banana (my usual meal before a timed run). The banana is usually enough to fuel me but not too much to make me feel heavy/like throwing up during the run. The caffeine pills, well, are self explanatory. :)
Side note: I went through THREE of these bananas (to equal one) since there were rotten spots on every single one. WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT?! (I also ate half a toasted whole wheat bagel thin with a little almond butter on top since my stomach was growling and it was early).
Maybe I would be so excited and fired up I would BLAST THROUGH the course?! We would see.
I made sure to get up early enough to get ready and do the 30 minutes of Asylum V2 Stretch. Why? This warms my muscles and stretches them to help me run and keeps me from injuring them.
Then, I was off to pick up the bestie and drive to Headquarters. It was a little on the bitter side (as I expected) but could always be worse right? At least it was not snowing/raining.
Before the full marathon started, a girl sang the National Anthem and they let go of balloons for those lost at the Boston Marathon a few days prior (they are small and above the hot air balloon).
Here is a picture of the girls I work with and the ones that usually take part in our run! :)
The bestie and I continued to flock towards the sun in hopes of getting warm. Our chips were also on our shoes and raring to go!
A fellow friend/co-worker/my competition (he won by a couple minutes):
Which brings me to..... the RESULTS!
Last year's chip time: 32:11:33 / 10:24 pace (first ever 5K done)
This year's time: 26:21:80 / 8:31 pace (quite a difference and this is according to the official chip time, not RunKeeper - which I started a few feet early)!!
NOTE: Apparently, most of the runners missed a curve in the path and we were short about .14 of a mile; therefore making this race about 2.96 miles. Thus, my shorter '5K' and RunKeeper time. FAIL. There were several of us that were upset (there were signs but everyone was following everyone else) but my pace was significantly better than any race I have run. I'll take it and run with it.
I used FITRADIO for music (Top 40) which proved itself worthy. I did skip two or three songs since they did not push me hard enough. Although, I was pretty happy with the performance. :)
My FR 70 (I stopped a few minutes late) told me that I burnt 422 calories. Not toooooo shabby!
Here are the 'official' results.
Here is the shirt they gave in our packets for registering. I heard it was designed by a child who won a contest! :) I will add it to my race shirts in my closet.
AND of course, I hung the bib next to my other ones in my workout room.
Things I learned from this 5K:
We left significantly earlier this year which meant we did not have to run to the starting line, I actually got a great parking spot, and we sat in the car for about 45 minutes in the warmth (provided for ample people-watching).
Until... I had to go to the bathroom (I went 2-3 times at home in hopes I would not have to do this). Therefore, we got out into the cold and made our way to the port-a-potties they had lined up near the start/finish. That was a first for me.
I had better endurance and was faster than any other 5K I have run. Why? I thank my training/running that I have been doing. I am also not stiff/as sore as I was last year.
I passed the word 'BOSTON' written on the path sometime during mile 2 which made me remember and push harder for those people. This thought also pushed me through the last half of the run.
I am glad that I dressed warmly.
My feet were numb with cold for about 1-1.5 miles. That was weird and I am glad they warmed up (I was even hopping around for 30-45 minutes before the start).
I high-fived a security worker/organizer somewhere near the end of mile 2.
I kept my friend in my sight for about half of the run (he runs faster than I do) and then I lost him. However, I am proud of my finish time. :)
Kids passed me. That's okay. I AM OKAY WITH THIS. A scarecrow also passed me. And then, I passed him.
I am glad I had my sunglasses this year.
There was no chocolate milk at the end (I only found bananas and yogurt) which was a huge disappointment. However, my daughter, mother and I went to First Watch for brunch afterwards. :)
It seems I was always in front of the professional cameras. Here are my cheesy smiles during the run and a few of the bazillion group photos.
Aside from the fail in distance (that is not necessarily Garmin's fault but probably the first people who failed to read the arrows and then the people who played Follow The Leader) it was a great run. I wish it was slightly warmer but the path was nice and there were not many rises in elevation.
Today was also Day 41 of INSANITY, so I just finished Max Interval Plyo after getting my daughter to bed. Yes, that's right, I stuck to the schedule (even though it was hard). Now I remember why I do INSANITY in the morning (and my I think my chalk board does too).
I hope everyone had a great Saturday. I am off to take a shower, eat some Cheerios, and get to sleep! (By the way - my protein is on HIGH today, as is my hunger, - check it out at MyFitnessPal).

A nice cup of coffee for a nice relaxing evening off. Spent 30 minutes on the stationary cycle at the gym this morning. No pain in the knee. This tape really does wonders. Hopefully it'll be ready for the @garminmarathon in 30 days! 😳

This interesting little nook caught my eye on our walk just now. So does anyone in the KC area want to plan a little meetup at the @garminmarathon this Saturday? Or do we just chance it? (at Nevada, Missouri)
