This just brings to mind the mystery (solved) of Garfield phones washing up on French beaches. I first heard of this before it was on the wider English internet (2004?) from my sister when she lived in France. If you want to learn more about that, here you are.

One of Walsh's occasional readers is Davis, who heard about the site a few months ago. The cartoonist calls the work "an inspired thing to do" and wishes to thank Walsh for enabling him to see another side of "Garfield." "Some of the strips were slappers: 'Oh, I could have left that out.' It would have been funnier," Davis says.

On Garfield Minus Garfield

Now, I have to admit, Garfield Minus Garfield is great. It’s an adaptation of pre existing literature. And adaptations of pre existing literature makes up 90% of our literature. I have a laugh whenever I see one of the edited strips. They’re great.

My issues come with others interpretations. Mainly, the idea that it puts into perspective how Jon is. The idea is he’s having full-on conversations with his cat and/or dog, who since they’re animals, may as well not exist. Therefore, Jon is clinically insane.

And I have to respond to that with a hearty no. Garfield is not a normal cat. Anyone can see that. He watches TV. He sends emails. He swats spiders, and writes letters to Santa, and orders pizza. What’s more, Odie, outside of the infamous strip of him smoking a pipe with Mozart on the TV, shows signs of sentience as well.

To anyone, it’s obvious that Garfield and Odie are intelligent. If my cats and dogs were sentient, do you know how much I’d gush to them about my day? Probably too much.

So I have to say, for having sentient beings for pets, Jon is quite sane.
