“Clutch’s hormones and Benjy’s HIV meds on a mirror”
2015, 32”x48”, archival giclee print, edition of 10
A collaborative work with T Fleischmann
An excerpt from T’s brilliant book “Time is the thing a body moves through”
My friend Benjy made the gloaming, all-windows building that is on the cover of a book I wrote and that inspired the architecture of the shack I built and inhabited for a while in Tennessee. The cottage he built shines like someone is arriving in the moonlight, but the window framing on my shack is salvaged gray wood, spongy soft and without a good gleam. Before I move to Chicago I take a bus down to Tennessee to visit him. His house is similar, cedar slats and old barn windows for a greenhouse, row after row of flowers I can’t identify, steps up the hillside so the top opens to a garden like the bottom does. Benjy moved here about a decade ago, after growing up in Oklahoma. When I climb the stairs he’s shirtless like he always is, a big beard and a hairy wide chest, and he has a genuine smile that doesn’t seem to go away. “Sterling’s flowers are doing amazing,” I say. It is the part of summer that dips into fall and he shows me one flower, an iris that blooms yellow. It is still hot enough that every step is a bending of grass, white motes of gnats rising. The crawling flower came from Scotland, where Sterling spent the early nineties in an abbey on an island. Our friend Mathilduh visited the abbey after Sterling died, dug up some of the plant, and secreted it back across the ocean. Now it’s in an elevated flowerbed with a bunch of perennials Sterling planted. Near it, off the porch, is an old air-conditioner top he flipped upside down and made into a hanging planter for some aloe plants. They propagate a bounty of baby aloes all summer long, popping out clones asexually. There are more aloe babies than a person would use so some of them end up unplanted, clumps of green spikey leaves with roots dangling out the bottom, on the sills of the screen windows.
Benjy and I have placed a mirror as wide and tall as my arm span on a card table in the flat bit of his front yard. The mirror shows sky, and beside it we set a ladder and his photography equipment. We dump all our prescription drugs onto the reflective surface, bottle after bottle. The pills are tan, light yellow, two shades of blue, one of red, a pale pink, and a paler pink with a purple hue. When they are all mixed together they look like pills, generically, unlike when they are in the bottles and seem direct references to our survival. The mirror’s reflection of sky is both stark and creamy. If I place my hand upon this sky it does not ripple, but there is a fingerprint.
We are here to shape the pills into letters, which takes time, and so we chat all morning about them. Thousands and thousands of dollars worth of medication, they are the most expensive material we have used to make an image. Another in a long series of changes to Benjy’s HIV treatment plan and insurance access in the deeply conservative state means that most of these are not pills he is taking but rather pills he has taken. They are pills that worked, pills he can’t access anymore, cocktails of pills that might or might not act on the body with greater efficacy to suppress his viral load than the cocktail of pills he took this morning. I contribute only three varieties to the mirror, synthetic estrogen and two kinds of testosterone blockers. These pills, too, have been rendered different with the sudden announcement that there’s a shortage of injectable estrogen in the United States, a combination of FDA policies and disinterested manufacturers conspiring to end the production of the oil. I’ve never gone for a shot, and sometimes I mail people pills, just as sometimes friends sent pills to me when I ran out. On the mirror, smooth like the oil is slick, the pills roll with the slightest wind, or when my hip grazes the table edge. My feet, too hard on the ground, make all the blue and white and yellow and tan quake at once. 2015, the beginning of the estrogen shortage, Benjy and I joke.
I count backward to figure out when I started taking hormones—Seattle, Brooklyn, moving away from the South, Berlin with Simon, falling in love with Otelia . . . I land in some summer, I don’t know when. I distrust linearity, but bodies can seem like one of the only linear things—age, getting bigger and then smaller, death. Another reason to appreciate the transitioning body, which ages backward, every person seeming to become younger, with or without taking hormones. It’s a good reminder that the body was never linear in the first place. And anyway, when wasn’t my desire pubescent? I didn’t know what I wanted until I had it, which was just to feel different. And when I swung a hammer, my inner forearm landing against a new, warm shape, I tired more quickly, and was happier for it.
Benjy and I use maybe one hundred pills. Post-Scarcity, they spell out. The word is multihued and large. I hold the ladder while Benjy positions the camera above, and as the clouds pass in their own game of arrangement, he snaps a picture, waits, snaps a picture. The images show only pills and sky, and it appears as though the word is floating above us. Post-Scarcity, it says, composed of more than one body like all bodies are. I use the crook of my elbow to sweep the pills into a bag and we return to the house, sorting them from one another again, putting them back into bottles. Categorization isn’t how we acknowledge difference, but rather its enforcement, difference leveraged to keep things apart that could well be together.

10 ways to make your garden more green
Hello green fingers, how green does your nursery truly develop? On the off chance that you presume that your peaceful idyll is reproducing more lethal synthetic concoctions than prize half breed tea-flower shrubberies, at that point read on, my earth-moving companion. We'll have you footloose and sans pesticide yet, regardless of whether you're a courageous scene originator genuinely forming topiaries to reenact the Fall of Troy or a condo tenant substance with a few pruned begonias. The main inquiry you have to pose to yourself click here.
Top Green Gardening Tips
You know what they state about Mother knowing best? All things considered, Mother Nature never expected to take tastes from a concoction mixed drink of pesticides, weed executioners, and compound manures to keep her demonstration together. Nix the toxins and layer on some all-common fertilizer. Bring in helpful bug fortifications to wrestle troublesome nursery vermin to the ground. Who needs to play Command and Conquer when you have combat zone show unfurling before you continuously?
Make fertilizer from kitchen scraps
Fertilizer like a champ by tossing in your vegetable waste, rather than permitting it to be trucked off to the landfill. Known as "planter's gold," fertilizer enhances soil ripeness by giving it an injection of powerful, plant-adoring supplements. Beside invigorating sound root advancement, the expansion of rich and natural manure additionally improves soil surface, air circulation, and water maintenance. Why squander your well deserved money on business items when the genuine article is free for the taking? Accelerate the procedure with the assistance of night crawlers or go sans wriggle (in case you're the nauseous sort).
Purchase reused
In the event that your fragile tasteful sensibilities shy away from reusing yogurt or takeout compartments to house your hydrangeas, look at the bunch ecologically cordial grower and bestgardentoolz units now accessible. It takes less vitality to reuse something than to mine virgin materials, so whether you pick reused copper, plastic, or considerably elastic to stay your delicate shoots, it's all copacetic. Respect your workmanship and eco-smarts while relaxing on reused grass furniture.
Develop your own nourishment
Purchasing natural produce can as a matter of fact get expensive, so what about developing your own nourishment rather than meticulously manicuring that yard for the umpteenth time? An expected 40 million sections of land of the 48 touching American states are shrouded in yards, making turf grass the United States' biggest inundated harvest. American mortgage holders apply a wince commendable a huge number of pounds of manures and pesticides to their gardens, frequently at commonly the prescribed levels. All that for minimal more than ornamentation. It's an ideal opportunity to come back to the utilization of nurseries as nourishment sources- - you won't discover fresher (or less expensive) eating anyplace else.
Join a network garden
Urban inhabitants deprived of a yard shouldn't fuss: You can at present get in on the hoeing and developing activity by pursuing a plot at your nearby network garden. Network plants normally have a shared treating the soil zone, too, so on the off chance that you don't have space for one of those triple-obligation pivoting barrel composters in your house, here's your hookup.
Go local
Since you've taken in a portion of the benefits of "de-lawning" your home, consider supplanting the ol' putting green with local and indigenous plants, regardless of whether they're prickly plant cultivates in Arizona or bottlebrush grasses in Northern Michigan. Effectively adjusted to neighborhood conditions, local plants are anything but difficult to develop and keep up, for the most part requiring less manure and water, just as less exertion to get control over irritations.
Reap water
Including a downpour barrel is a reasonable and easy approach to catch mineral-and sans chlorine water for watering gardens, yards, and nurseries, just as washing vehicles or flushing windows. By outfitting what's actually coming down from the sky, you'll not just notification a stamped plunge in water costs, yet in addition a decrease in stormwater spillover, which thusly forestalls disintegration and flooding. Pop a screen on your barrel to keep out creepy crawlies, flotsam and jetsam, and feathered creature rockets, and utilize your water supply to keep it moving and circulated air through.
Water with care
While we're regarding the matter of water, receiving a couple of keen watering propensities will do a lot to loosen up your stockpile, particularly during dry, sweltering spells in the mid year. Adding mulch and fertilizer to your dirt will hold water and chop down vanishing. In addition, soaker hoses or trickle water system just utilize 50 percent of the water utilized by sprinklers. Water promptly in the day so you can keep away from vanishing and winds. What's more, the best spot to douse your plants? Straightforwardly on those parched roots.
Welcome on the butterflies and honey bees
Give a without pesticide asylum to our pollinator buddies, for example, butterflies and honey bees, by growing a differing assortment of local blossoms they're especially attracted to, for example, wild lilac, goldenrod, and lemon demulcent. (Nurseries with at least 10 types of appealing plants have been found to allure the most honey bees.) If you haven't just heard, we're in the throes of a significant honey bee misfortune plague, which is causing beekeepers in North America and Europe much hand-wringing. Since pollinators influence 35 percent of the world's harvest creation - and increment the yield of 87 of the main nourishment crops around the world - broadening a little old neighborhood cordiality could go far.
The intensity of 4
Get hip to four "R"s of the U.S. Natural Protection Agency's GreenScapes program: Reduce, reuse, reuse and rebuy. You need to decrease your yield of waste to guarantee you're utilizing materials effectively. Reusing fertilizer and tree clippings for mulch, or water for watering occupy brief period and vitality, however offer a lot of natural value for your money. Reusing spares assets, while rebuying implies looking for items that address your issues, however are more naturally agreeable than your standard buys - take, for example, sun based open air lighting versus electric-controlled installations. https://bestgardentoolz.com/

Could walking barefoot on grass improve your health?
By Carrie Dennett, Washington Post, July 10, 2018
It is not a secret that spending time in nature is good for you. For years, researchers have been detailing how people who live near green spaces--parks, greenbelts, tree-lined streets, rural landscapes--have better physical and mental health, and practices such as Japanese forest bathing and Nordic hygge, which has a strong outdoorsy component, are being embraced here in the United States. Could grounding be next?
I was intrigued when a colleague recently recommended a mutual patient--seeing her for stress management and me for nutritional advice--experiment with walking barefoot in the grass for a short time each day. A few weeks later, I stumbled across an article that gave a name to that practice--grounding. The idea behind grounding, also called earthing, is humans evolved in direct contact with the Earth’s subtle electric charge, but have lost that sustained connection thanks to inventions such as buildings, furniture and shoes with insulated synthetic soles.
Advocates of grounding say this disconnect might be contributing to the chronic diseases that are particularly prevalent in industrialized societies. There is actually some science behind this. Research has shown barefoot contact with the earth can produce nearly instant changes in a variety of physiological measures, helping improve sleep, reduce pain, decrease muscle tension and lower stress.
There are many reasons connecting with nature is good for mind and body, but electricity probably is not one you have considered. If you think back to the last time you took a science class, you may remember that everything, including humans, is made up of atoms. These microscopic particles contain equal numbers of negatively charged electrons, which come in pairs, and positively charged protons, so an atom is neutral--unless it loses an electron. When an atom has an unpaired electron, it becomes a “free radical” with a positive charge, capable of damaging our cells and contributing to chronic inflammation, cancer and other diseases. In this case, “positive” is not a good thing.
One reason direct physical contact with the ground might have beneficial physiological effects is the earth’s surface has a negative charge and is constantly generating electrons that could neutralize free radicals, acting as antioxidants. You may think of antioxidants as coming from food, and indeed a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and other foods that provide beta-carotene, selenium, lutein, lycopene and vitamins A, C and E helps prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Still, it is interesting that we may be able to get them directly from the earth, too.
Research also suggests physical contact with the Earth’s surface can help regulate our autonomic nervous system and keep our circadian rhythms--which regulate body temperature, hormone secretion, digestion and blood pressure, among other things--synchronized with the day/night cycle. Desynchronization of our internal clocks has been linked to a number of health problems, as evidenced by research on shift workers.
The key may be the impact on the vagus nerve. This is the largest nerve of the autonomic nervous system--extending from the brain to the colon--and plays a key role in heart, lung and digestive function. Strong vagal tone helps you relax faster after experiencing stress, while weak vagal tone is associated with chronic inflammation. Inflammation, in turn, is associated with a number of chronic diseases--including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. Vagal tone is often assessed by measuring the variation in your heart rate when you breathe in and out, and in one study, grounding was shown to improve heart rate variability and thus vagal tone in preterm infants. In another small study of adults, one two-hour session of grounding reduced inflammation and improved blood flow.
While many clinical studies have demonstrated beneficial physical changes when participants are grounded, studies tend to be small and are done indoors using wires that connect to ground outlets. This is partly because using a lab is more practical than taking study participants outdoors, but also so participants will not know if they are grounded or not--to avoid a placebo effect. There is little research specifically on the effects of grounding in nature and whether it results in the same positive effects on stress, pain and sleep.
Still, since being outdoors is proved to be good for you, it probably would not hurt to try it yourself to see if you notice any benefits. So how do you ground? Simply allow your skin to be in contact with any natural conductors of the earth’s electricity, working up to at least 30 minutes at a time (unfortunately, studies do not seem to have addressed how often grounding should occur). You can walk barefoot on grass, moist soil, sand, gravel or concrete (but not other types of pavement). You can swim in the ocean, a lake or other natural body of water. You can sit under a tree, leaning against the trunk.
If you have concerns about whether it is sanitary to walk barefoot outside, there are options. Keep a patch of lawn off-limits to your dog. Or put a blanket or towel between your skin and the ground; natural fibers such as cotton and wool do not interfere with grounding. You can even wear leather-soled shoes. Or, garden instead. Digging gloveless in the garden also puts you in direct contact with the earth--just make sure you are not using chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

MegaGrass vs Other Artificial Grass Companies
The Dream.
A white picket fence around a perfectly manicured yard. Beautiful and smart children in the home. A nice car or two. But that was before. Today, that dream has changed. More and more people are rethinking their goals and what the dream is all about
Despite this change, some things remain the same. In fact, the details of this ideal remain unchanged for most people. Today, people still think that a landscaped yard means success. This is because a well-kept lawn suggests that the homeowners have the means to support such luxury. Pristine lawns, in a way, highlight a home’s status in a community. It’s an indicator of social and economic character.
At present, a fairly large industry exists around lawn care. This market is slowly being explored by a lot of landscape companies.
One of these growing industries is the fake grass turf industry. This market is driven by rising demands for low maintenance grass used for sporting events and more. One important factor for this demand is water conservation, which is a welcome change given our planet’s current conditions.
Unlike in old times, the lawns of today are no longer markers of success. The introduction of fake grass to the world gave people more landscape options. In the past, only the more affluent people could afford to have pretty lawns. Now, all it takes is a call to a contractor and you can have your own lawn ready in no time.
Who is MegaGrass?
And who better to cater to your sensitive landscaping needs than a company like MegaGrass? MegaGrass is an industry-leading provider of eco-friendly landscaping solutions. Here at MegaGrass, we provide artificial grass products that fit a wide range of lifestyles.
We’ve been rolling out artificial grass innovations for more than a decade, and we’re more than happy to bend to your needs.

But we don’t just manufacture and distribute guilt-free landscaping products, we also make sure that our clients have easy access to them through 11 locations all over the United States.
MegaGrass is part of the EcoGreen America family. EcoGreen America is artificial grass and hedge company headquartered in Las Vegas. Much like MegaGrass, EcoGreen America is devoted to producing the highest quality, eco-friendly grass products for better landscaping solutions.
Our company was founded in 2009 and was motivated by the valiant search for beautiful and sustainable grass alternatives in the deserts of Nevada. Along with our company’s creation was the creation of the Stip Blade - a delustered synthetic grass blade that diffuses light withstands traffic, and keeps surface temperatures at tolerable levels.
As a company, we strive to make a difference in humanity’s carbon footprint. Our terminal goal is 360 sustainability, and we do so while making sure we enrich your life.

It may also be used to cover up bad spots on your deck so the area looks perfect at all times.
MegaPet
Passionate pet owners are more than happy to spend time and money on their fur babies. So we’re pretty sure skimping on a decent play and potty area is not an option for these “pawrents”. The MegaPet artificial grass for dogs collection caters to the sensitive needs of animals of all breed sizes. These grass lawns are easy to clean, well-draining, and they also stay looking great despite all the pet traffic.
MegaGolf
You don’t have to be a pro to deserve a beautiful putting green. Step up your golf game with the MegaGolf collection. Engineered to aid play improvement, this fake putting grass can efficiently better your short game and easily take strokes off your score.
MegaPlay
Play areas aren’t always constructed with safety in mind. True, a small accident here and there might seem like a learning experience for kids. But teachable moments don’t have to hurt that much right? That is where the MegaPlay playground turf collection comes in. It is the best alternative to hard floor beds found in traditional playgrounds. It is not only designed to be durable, it also provides a cushion, so kids can get away from accidents with only minor scratches or maybe even none.
MegaSport
For superior turf traction and efficient force reduction on the off chance of an injury, MegaSport is your grass. The MegaSport collection is designed to optimize sports performance, improve balance, and increase coordination. The blades of this artificial sports turf allow a level playing surface perfect for agility training.
Artificial Grass Technology
At a glance, artificial grass lawns seem so simple and basic. What people don’t know is that a lot of research goes into every individual blade to guarantee quality and provide features unique to the brand. Below we highlight some of the innovations we have incorporated into our products:
EverGreen
You want your artificial turf to be a healthy color of green, not too bright and not too dull. The EverGreen technology makes sure that the blades of the turf will blend with the thatching for a more natural looking shade. With this tech at hand, your grass can look fresher for longer.
EverFlow
If you’re using your grass as a potty for your beloved pets, then drainage is very important. The EverFlow technology greatly improves the drainage of every fake grass panel on your lawn. This will significantly cut down your cleanup time, so you can have more cuddle time with your babies.
EverCool
The truth about fake turf is that unlike natural grass, it can get relatively warm or hot depending on the weather. And since it is made of plastic, there is a chance that it will melt under extreme temperatures--but not with EverCool. The EverCool technology significantly keeps turf cooler than regular fake grass. Now you can enjoy your time on your lawn better for longer.
EverFresh
Nobody wants a lawn that smells. With EverFresh you can keep you turf smelling like freshly cut natural grass. Welcome every day with a scent that reminds you of how wonderful it is to spend time outdoors--even when outdoors mean you’re just sitting on your lawn.

The MegaGrass Difference
Higher prices don’t always mean quality. They might, but like any other rule, there is an exception. Research on the different types of fake grass. Check out samples. Take time to read reviews. These are just some of the ways you can check which product best fits your needs and budget.
But if you’re looking for a feature that stands out from the rest, then MegaGrass is the company to call. What makes us different from other grass companies is our ability to provide custom cut turf sizes for your particular needs. While most turf companies only sell grass by 15’ widths, we cut according to the demands of your landscaping project to minimize losses when trimming turf.
If you have a very particular set of requirements, requirements you have acquired over the years while tied down to your high-maintenance natural lawn, you’ll be pleased to know that we got you covered.
Gone are the days when people’s lawns reflected their status in life. Nowadays, any home can get a similar experience with the help of artificial grass. These people are also changing their ways into an earth-friendly one.
Buying smart is better than just shopping for items with the highest prices. Remember, an item that is costly isn’t always high-quality. There are makers like MegaGrass who don’t only focus on sales. We at MegaGrass try hard to provide eco-friendly solutions to people who love our products. In a world where companies are all about sales, we chose to be kinder to the planet.
We support sustainability and believe that we can do better. One of our goals is to educate people about fake grass and how it helps improve the quality of their lives.
This survey not only aims to list down prices of grass products. It also aims to inform people that in their choices there is power. Being mindful of your choices is good for your homes. These choices are even better for the planet as a whole.
Here at MegaGrass we try to make a difference in the world however we can. We’d love for you to join this movement. To know more about our vision and how we wish to accomplish them, you may visit us at megagrass.com.

Lets obtain the answer “why?”. Why the towel should be good quality ?. Lets Begin, towels have different function from different fabrics and material, whether they dry your system or plate. The things to remember are:

Focus around the substance in the towel material. Amazing towels are normally produced using long and great strands. A portion in the more expensive towels are designed using Brazilian or Egyptian fiber. Albeit elusive, Supima cotton can be a decent decision for long fiber cotton that develops within the United States.
Self test. At the store, it is possible to see with your own individual eyes whether or not the towel coordinates your necessities and will.
• Look nearly. Does the fiber stand like grass within the garden? This can be a decent sign. On the off chance they are level, it is not great.

Major League Baseball will continue to support sustainable efforts in connection with the Midsummer Classic in Cleveland, Ohio, this coming July. During All-Star Week (Thursday, July 4th-Tuesday, July 9th), MLB will partner with local universities to activate ‘GREEN TEAMS,’ a group of students that encourages environmental awareness during MLB All-Star events, including all ballpark events (e.g., MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, T-Mobile Home Run Derby and the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game). ‘GREEN TEAM’ efforts include educational aspects surrounding sustainability for the students, collecting recyclables at ballpark and community events, and raising awareness among fans on positive environmental practices. ‘GREEN TEAM’ members will also participate in a special All-Star environmental volunteer event. A version of the ‘GREEN TEAM’ will be implemented throughout the 2019 World Series in October. In 2018, the MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard in Washington, D.C. became the first U.S. professional league event to be certified as environmentally responsible by the Council of Responsible Sport. MLB expects to once again accomplish the feat with the 2019 Midsummer Classic.
MLB will also seek to offset the environmental footprint of player travel to and from Cleveland, as well the energy and water used at Progressive Field, by purchasing renewable energy credits and water restoration credits in conjunction with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and the “Change the Course” program.
Special Educational Partnerships
Discovery Education: MLB has recently partnered with Discovery Education, the leading providers of standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, to launch baseball and sustainability-focused content in schools throughout the United States. The official program, which will debut in May, will feature educational video vignettes in which representatives from several Clubs will discuss how their ballparks are environmentally conscious while highlighting effective sustainability practices. These videos will be featured in classrooms across the United States through the Discovery Education platform.
FOX SPORTS University: In an ongoing partnership with FOX Sports University, MLB and FOX has collaborated with the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University to provide educational opportunities around sustainability and public relations. Student groups with the best presentations around sustainability and environmental awareness will be MLB guests during 2019 MLB All-Star Week in Cleveland to contribute to sustainability efforts, including being a part of the All-Star GREEN TEAM.
MLB Front Office Volunteer Events
In advance of Earth Day, front office employees at MLB and MLB Network and family members volunteered at Claremont Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Saturday, April 13th. Additionally, the MLB office in Boulder, Colo., will also hold a volunteer event for its employees at Boulder High School on Wednesday, April 24th, joined by the high school baseball team. Through both efforts, volunteers are tasked with revitalization activities, including landscaping, general cleanup, painting, and more. Scotts, the official lawn care company of Major League Baseball, donated product to support the efforts.
Club Initiatives
Major League Baseball was the first U.S. professional sports league to have all of Clubs as members of the Green Sports Alliance, which promotes healthy, sustainable communities in sports. In fact, MLB Clubs diverted more than 20,000 tons of recycled or composted waste during the 2018 season. Additionally, each year, MLB awards the eco-friendliest club with its ‘Green Glove Award,’ with the San Francisco Giants taking the award in 2018.

Examples of MLB Club Sustainability Practices
MLB Clubs emphasize sustainability efforts through waste diversion, composting, and energy efficient practices throughout the season. These programs include comprehensive LED field lighting installations, recycling efforts, on-site gardens, conscious usage of water and electricity and more. Following are examples of practices by MLB Clubs:
Special Earth Day Activations
Boston Red Sox: In recognition of Earth Day, the Red Sox will donate $25,000 to the City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department to support their efforts to maintain clean, green, safe, and accessible open space in the Fenway neighborhood.
Cleveland Indians: On May 19th, the Cleveland Indians will implement an Earth Day program at the Western Land Conservatory. In addition, they will teach students at Washington Park Environmental High School about the importance of trees in protecting the environment.
Oakland Athletics: In celebration of Earth Day, the A’s are teaming up with Energy Upgrade California to feature baseball’s most energy efficient national anthem. The team will reduce ballpark energy by not using video screens, LED boards, or microphones during the national anthem.
Philadelphia Phillies: On April 19th, front office staff will volunteer for the annual FDR Cleanup near Citizens Bank Park. Additionally, on Earth Day, the Phillies and Partner Constellation will host children at Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. Activities include Earth Day bingo and the teaching of photosynthesis through dance.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Direct Energy, the North American retailer of energy and energy services, will offer the Pittsburgh Pirates 100% renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) on Earth Day, meaning all energy used will come from a renewable energy source.
Seattle Mariners: At T-Mobile Park in 2017, more than 761 tons of food waste was diverted from the waste stream to composting and over three tons of surplus food was donated to Seattle area feeding programs. These efforts earned the Mariners the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2018 Food Recovery Challenge National Award for Sports & Entertainment Venues. EPA Region 10 Administrator Chris Hladick will present the award to the Mariners on Thursday, April 25th, prior to the Mariners vs. Texas Rangers game.
St. Louis Cardinals: On Monday, April 22nd, with the purchase of a special Theme Ticket, fans will take home an 18 oz. glass water bottle with a silicone cover and bamboo lid. A portion of each ticket will be donated to support environmental sustainability in St. Louis. The St. Louis Cardinals will host its 10th annual Green Week from June 4th through June 6th. The week will include several activities designed to reduce waste and promote recycling and energy efficiency both inside and outside the stadium
General Sustainability & Key Appointments
The Arizona Diamondbacks installed state-of-the-art synthetic grass at Chase Field in partnership with Shaw Sports Turf for the 2019 season. The high-performance B1K™ surface is designed specifically for baseball and features a Geofill infill that is made from natural materials that are environmentally friendly. In addition to conserving cooling energy by keeping the Chase Field roof closed during the daytime, the new playing surface is expected to provide 90% savings – nearly 2 million gallons – in water consumption each season by requiring less water than natural grass.
Earlier this April, the New York Yankees became the first major North American sports team to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, the aim of which is to reduce greenhouse emissions and inspire others to take ambitious climate action. The Framework invites sports organizations to play a leading role by committing to measure, reduce and offset their emissions and use sport as a unifying force to drive climate awareness and action. For more information regarding this initiative, please click here. To date, the team has demonstrated leadership in energy efficiency, including the measurement, reduction and offsetting of greenhouse gas impacts with the distribution of thousands of life-saving high-efficiency cookstoves in Africa. Additionally, Yankee Stadium is proud to promote a zero-waste economy and stands as one of the most successful recycling and composting venues in all of sports. At present, approximately 85 percent of waste is diverted away from landfills by an active commitment to composting and recycling. To deepen their existing dedication to environmentally-friendly practices and community-wide awareness, the Yankees in January appointed recognized industry leader Dr. Allen Hershkowitz to the new role of environmental science advisor, the first position of its kind in professional sports.
New for 2019, Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins, features a “living wall” batter’s eye – the first of its kind in Major League Baseball – that incorporates approximately 5,700 sea green juniper plants, individually installed and secured in a tiered, multiple-tray system. Together, the junipers create a consistent, stationary background of lush greenery, providing both beauty and a world-class hitter’s backdrop. The structure also enhances Target Field’s award-winning sustainability platform, as it will be self-irrigated via Pentair’s rain water system.
The Oakland Athletics and Arizona State University collaborated on a unique sustainability partnership during 2019 Spring Training presented by Camping World. Hohokam Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Athletics, was the focus site of the “Recycle Rally” initiative that tested and implemented zero waste strategies with the overarching goals of reducing landfill impact, increasing operational efficiencies and improving the fan experience across all Cactus League ballparks. As part of the initiative, a group of 21 ASU students analyzed the waste stream and operations at the ballpark to help the venue become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. ASU then discussed with the A’s how they can minimize and most effectively manage waste, including incorporating effective waste diversion practices at the ballpark through recycling, reusing, and composting.
LEED Certification
Six Major League ballparks – Marlins Park (Miami Marlins), Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers), Nationals Park (Washington Nationals), Oracle Park (San Francisco Giants), Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles), SunTrust Park (Atlanta Braves) and Target Field (Minnesota Twins) – are LEED-certified in various aspects of their operation. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications are given to buildings that meet strict guidelines for environmental responsibility by using less water and energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Nationals Park was the first major professional sports venue to become LEED certified. Being built on a brownfield, the ballpark site was enrolled in the Voluntary Cleanup Program and therefore provides an opportunity to leave the roughly 25-acre site a much better environment than when it was received. It was built using 95% recycled steel and 35% regionally-sourced construction materials.
Oracle Park was recently certified as LEED Platinum for Existing Building Operations and Maintenance. The first professional sports venue in America to earn Platinum, one of the most challenging category certifications to achieve under the rating system, in the areas of sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; innovation in design; and location and transportation.
Target Field was the first ballpark to receive LEED Gold status for Operations and Maintenance in 2017, and has completed a successful renewal process to continue Gold status into 2019.
LED Lighting
At the start of the 2019 season, 18 MLB Clubs (Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers) have installed LED Field Lighting at their ballparks. In addition to enhancing the fan experience, LED fixtures are more efficient and have a lifespan of thirty years. SunTrust Park was the first ballpark to install LED field lighting as part of construction, saving 45% energy in comparison to standard field lighting.
Recycling
In 2018, the San Francisco Giants led the league in recycling practices, with 94% of waste at Oracle Park being diverted from landfills. They were awarded the 2018 “Green Glove Award” by MLB.
Starting this season, all disposable foodservice ware (plates, cups, cutlery, straws, trays, etc.) distributed within Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals, are certified compostable in a composting facility. Special compost bins will be placed throughout the ballpark for fans to use, while existing trash cans and recycling bins will remain in place. All other concession giveaways either will be recyclable (soft drink bottles, beer cans, etc.) or sold as reusable souvenirs.
New this season, the Atlanta Braves have implemented glass and organics recycling initiatives at SunTrust Park. The pilot program for organics recycling includes filtering and recycling of fryer oil as well as composting kitchen scraps from the 365-day a year restaurants in the ballpark. The new glass and organics recycling initiatives will divert an estimated 44 tons of waste from landfills. In total, the Braves’ goal is to increase waste diversion by 25%, from 269 tons diverted in 2018 to more than 336 tons during the 2019 season.
Over the past two seasons, the Boston Red Sox have conducted six waste sorts, recovering and diverted a total of 21,963 pounds of recyclables from landfills. The club also diverted 673,920 pounds of composting from landfills during the 2018 season.
The Chicago Cubs have recycled enough to save 4,886 trees. The Cubs also transport construction debris, which are often harvested and manufactured within 500 miles of the job site, to recycling centers and use recycled materials wherever possible.
Similarly, the Colorado Rockies have recycled enough each year to save 2,830 35ft trees, spare 400 cubic yards of plastic landfill space and recycle enough fryer oil to run the average car 1,260 miles.
The Houston Astros installed new recycling bins in their concourses made of recycled plastic and are have incorporated biodegradable products across all concessions, such as trays, plates, cups and utensils.
Through aggressive recycling and waste-to-energy programs, the Minnesota Twins have kept more than 10,870 tons of waste out of local landfills over the last seven years. Since 2017, the Twins have partnered with Eco-Products – the nation’s leading brand of single-use foodservice packaging made from renewable and recycled resources – to supply Target Field’s compostable cups, plates, trays, utensils and straws. Much of the packaging relies on a material called Ingeo™, a compostable resin made by a company called NatureWorks headquartered a short distance from Target Field in Minnetonka, Minn.
The Pittsburgh Pirates sustainability practices successfully diverted more than 70% of the ballpark waste out of the waste stream, equivalent to more than 1,650 tons of materials.
Local Community Outreach
Through Home Runs for Trees, a partnership with PGW and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, a tree is planted for each home run hit by a Philadelphia Phillies player. To date, 1,074 trees have been planted in the Delaware Valley through the program since 2012.
Also, prepared food that has not been eaten from kitchens at most MLB ballparks is regularly donated to local organizations for those in need.
Water & Electricity
Atlanta Braves’ field water is captured via a reclamation system and is repurposed for the field irrigation needs, creating a 50% savings.
The Arizona Diamondbacks switched from natural grass to synthetic grass, which is expected to save a significant amount of water dire to Arizona’s arid climate.
Through a custom-designed Rain Water Recycle System provided by Minneapolis-based Pentair, the Minnesota Twins have captured, purified and reused more than 19 million total gallons of rainwater, drastically reducing the use of municipal water at Target Field. The majority of the recycled rainwater is used to wash down the seating bowl attached to the main concourse.
Ten MLB Clubs (Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals) utilize solar power at their ballparks.
Additionally, the Phillies and the Red Sox will purchase millions of kilowatt-hours of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match 100% of electricity usage with wind or solar generation. For the 12th straight calendar year, the Phillies purchased over 20 million kilowatt-hours of Renewable Energy Certificates. The Cardinals have increased their commitment to Green Power, by purchasing 6,000 RECs, which will cover all game-day usage for the entire season. Similarly, the Indians purchased 100% Green e-certified wind energy from FirstEnergy over the last year at Progressive Field. The Cubs are also pursuing renewable energy credits in obtaining electrical services. Cleveland is adding a new solar array to Progressive Field on the roof behind home plate.
The Padres recently installed the largest solar array in Major League Baseball. The impressive solar array is comprised of 716, 470-watt solar panels which will generate 330 kilowatts of solar power, enough to power the entire Padres front office. The system will also produce over 12 million kilowatt hours over the next 25 years. Along with LED sports lights, the Padres have also converted 95% of the ballpark lighting to LED. This includes all the front office, concourses, service level, concessions, restaurants, entry gates, and landscape lighting, and support areas.
In 2019, the Nationals and WGL Energy Systems teamed up to install 4,080 solar panels above the GEICO Garage and Garage C, with SGC Power serving as project developer. The solar canopies will supply power to the ballpark and provide covered parking for fans. The new solar panels are anticipated to produce approximately 1,890 megawatt hours of electricity each year, enough to power the equivalent of more than 182 homes and avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking approximately 285 vehicles off the road annually.
The Chicago Cubs are installing energy-efficient hot water systems with energy management controls, as well as energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for suites, the player clubhouse and other club spaces
Elimination of Straws
The Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers have joined the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees in permanently eliminating single-use plastic straws from their respective ballparks.
Ballpark Gardens
12 Major League ballparks, including Oracle Park (San Francisco Giants), Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals), Chase Field (Arizona Diamondbacks), Citi Field (New York Mets), Coors Field (Colorado Rockies), Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox), Nationals Park (Washington Nationals), Oakland Athletics (Oakland Coliseum) Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles), PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates), Progressive Field (Cleveland Indians) and T-Mobile Park (Seattle Mariners), currently operate their own gardens. The gardens at Oracle Park, Busch Stadium, Fenway Park, Coors Field, Nationals Park, PNC Park, Progressive Field and T-Mobile Park are all utilized to source food for concession stands and restaurants at the ballpark. In addition to providing food for the stadium, the gardens also serve as a teaching tool to inform the public about the importance of their local environment and as fan-gathering spots throughout a game.
Last season, the Pirates Rivendale Patio Garden at PNC Park produced more than 300 pounds of fresh produce that was utilized within recipes for menu options available in PNC Park premium seating areas.
After a fruitful beginning in 2016, the Nationals are expanding the rooftop garden at Nationals Park, which will now yield crops for three growing cycles, in an ongoing effort to 'Go Green' and encourage a sustainable ballpark.

8 Safety Tips That Expert Landscapers Should Know to Keep Kids Safe
Synthetic Grass is safest but if your artificial grass hasn’t been installed yet, here are some tips on keeping your kids while landscaping.

While they’re out, usually we are too… Albeit on our hands and knees for some lawn work. While we at Best Artificial Grass believe that synthetic grass can eliminate a laundry list of laborious maintenance, as well as safety and health hazards, we understand if you haven’t gotten around to installing your artificial grass. So here are 8 tips to make sure everyone is safe this season:
1. No Mowing with Your Kids Outside
In the United States, 800 children are injured each year because of lawn mowing related accidents. Whether mower blades are colliding with branches or rocks and hitting nearby children – or worse – this should be the rule of thumb.
2. Never Let Kids Play With or Around the Mower
Aside from the sharp blades below, even while turned off after use the exhaust of a mower can cause severe burns.
3. No Sidecars Means No Passengers
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a push mower age of 12 years old and a riding mower age of 16 years old. As adorable it is for kids to catch a ride while you mow your lawn, it won’t be as cute if they lose their balance and fall off.
4. Keep the Hard Surfaces Dry
Wet concrete, marble, and ceramic tile are slippery when wet. Aim your automatic sprinklers toward the grass.
5. Keep Your Lawn Chemical Free
Traditional lawn care products are toxic to people and the environment. Going all natural is simple: Don’t mow your lawn as often, leave clippings behind, and weed-out your garden by hand.
6. If You Must Use Chemicals, Keep Kids Away
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and don’t let kids play on freshly applied solution for at least 24 hours. Exposure to these toxins can cause permanent damage. Keep your chemicals locked.
7. Check the Lawn for Dangerous Objects
Debris from all kinds of sources can make its way into your yard. Before the kids go out to play, make sure that your lawn is clear of anything harmful that might look interesting to them.
8. Make the Best Decision for Your Family
No watering, no chemicals, no-emission upkeep – Best Artificial Grass’ landscaping products can save you money, maintenance and potential mishaps.
