self indulgent post with visuals for my Young Royals future fic
I took a walk all over the city today, something I haven’t done in a while. With all the things going on, it was nice to move my body and get out and about. It was sort of dreary and drizzly and cool, but since it’s been so hot these past few days, it was a nice change.
As I walked through one part of the city, it occurred to me that part of my path intersected with my fanfic plans. One of my future headcanons is that both August and Nils go to Georgetown for university. I realized I was walking on a path that was probably one of August’s jogging routes. I decided I’d take some photos and post them here with some captions, in case anyone finds it interesting.
This is so far from show-related I am not tagging it or making it rebloggable. But I hope you enjoy all the same!
Tumblr media
This is the House of Sweden, which also houses the Swedish and Icelandic embassies. They run a lot of cool cultural exhibitions, and sometimes there are rooftop concerts and Christmas markets and things. I believe some of the actual Swedish royal kids did summer internships here, so this is where I imagine August doing his own summer internship. He also has a colleague working for the Icelandic embassy who becomes Nils’s boyfriend.
Tumblr media
Just around the corner from the embassy is a boating center. A lot of the private schools in the area row here. I imagine August would find some familiarity in a sight like this!
Tumblr media
Speaking of being around water… here’s a cool shot of the C & O canal. Caution: there are Canada Geese lurking in this area. I will throw a bone to all the August haters out there and headcanon that one morning while jogging he gets chased by Canada Geese.
Tumblr media
Here’s a few of the Kennedy Center on the Potomac. If Wille and Simon ever came to DC, they could see a play, opera, or concert here.
Tumblr media
Look at Virginia across the Potomac! We love our siblings in Virginia. (It’s prettier at night.)
Tumblr media
At this point if August glances back over his shoulder, he can see the towers of Georgetown in the distance. He’s a long way from campus, but he probably won’t regret running that far. Probably.
Tumblr media
Eventually he’d get to a walkway that takes him to a sculpture garden attached to the Kennedy Center. (Do you think he’d look at this horse and think about Sara? Absolutely.)
Tumblr media
On his way back up the hill, August would catch sight of Saudi Arabia’s embassy. He probably would have also seen Thailand and Ukraine’s embassies during his morning run, but I didn’t get a picture of those because they’re earlier on his route and I didn’t have the idea in my head to take photos yet. (Interesting fact: the DC government renamed the street in front of the Saudi Arabian embassy Jamal Khashoggi Way.)
Tumblr media
Final image! This is a little bit off August’s jogging path, but it’s the EU Delegation Building. Currently they’re advertising the EU Open House, where all the EU embassies open their doors to the public and offer free food and swag (and basically aggressively promote their countries so you can think about going on vacation there.) Since August is an intern at the House of Sweden, he would probably have to shake so many hands that day and do so much PR as part of his job. Or he would have to hand out so much swag. (When I volunteered at the Finnish embassy I had to hand out food samples and came home smelling like rye bread and herring.)
I hope you enjoyed my little tour of this tiny part of DC! It was good to be out and about.

Ecuador: Bonus Day in Quito
With all my plans up in the air I reevaluated in the hostel, not in my room of course because the wifi signal didn’t reach that far but in the common space watching two British guys repacking their bags and laugh about how their travels in Ecuador were “so dangerous”. There were no group tours for Cajas National Park, which was the whole reason I was travelling this route to Cuena - well that and the fact that my flight was out of Guayaquil. Considering all options, including just getting on a plane back to Bogotá today, I decided to complete my journey with the public buses to Baños and Cuenca and book a private tour with the money refunded from Ecuadorhop. Once booked, I was able to relax and go for a late breakfast at Artifice San Marcos. The coffee and yoghurt granola bowl was average but only $8 so half the price of yesterday, I wrote out my postcards while I was sitting there as the only one in the entire cafe. There is no national postal service in Ecuador so I’ll be holding on to these postcards until I get back to Colombia. I went for a mocha and a little look around at the Republica del Cacao, delicious but very busy and quite pricy. Since I was already getting closer to it, I walked up the steep narrow street to the Basilica del Voto Nacional past more of those “nothing shops” that are everywhere in Quito. The Basilica was around a 20-30 minute walk (all uphill) so once I arrived I needed to take a little break before I started climbing the steps of the garden. I climbed all the way up to get some photos but the Basilica was so large that I wasn’t able to get the whole thing in one photo - I did my best! There was no exit at the top of these steps so after a break on a quiet bench in the garden, I headed back down the steep street to the hostel. My feet were killing me so I had a lie down for a couple hours, packed up most of my bag for heading to Banos tomorrow and then walked to Calle la Ronda which was just waking up for the evening. I accidentally walked a block too far and ended up in a very sketchy park with what appeared to be homeless people on drugs just loitering around eyeballing me. It was about to get dark so I quickly headed back up to the safety of the tourist street Calle la Ronda in search of dinner. I was searching for a specific restaurant which did not appear to exist anymore so then I went in search of tamales instead. The first restaurant lured me in but then didn’t have tamales so I left, and the second one assured me they had tamales but once I was inside, upstairs, seated with a menu - “oh no, we don’t have tamales”. This one was Restaurante Balcon Rondeño and was somewhat of a karaoke spot for locals. There was a group of 4 at the table beside me belting out their worst, and loudest singing to presumably Ecuadorian classics (viejitas y bonitas?). I ordered a variety plate of empanadas which was their special, as well as a ‘humito’ which they told me was similar to a tamale, and a strawberry milkshake. The milkshake was great, empanadas were mostly good but I couldn’t tell what the fillings were, and the humito was gross. It was full of egg and tasted like nothing so I couldn’t eat more than a few bites, glad I tried it though! The abuelita that was running the whole restaurant gave me a free taster shot of their house canelazo which was disgusting - the hostel one was delicious so I’m not sure if something was very different between their preparations or they were totally different drinks! The group beside me were getting progressively drunker and drunker (6:30pm on Thursday night, mind you) and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The abuelita was very sweet and thanked me for coming in to eat there. It cost a grand total of $8 including a tip which she was very grateful for. I can really sympathise with the Ecuadorian people, they’ve had a tough time lately. Since all the bad publicity and danger of the drug cartel war going on this year, tourism has taken a nose dive and it’s hard for businesses and people to survive.

The second part of our trip has come to an end after a 5 day road trip on the Garden Route. This route took us through rolling hills with vineyards and white sandy beaches along the southcoast and back over the steep mountainous Swartberg Pass and endless desert driving more inland. Total distance was roughly 1700 km.
On the first day, we set off early to see the marching ducks at a vineyard where they use them as a natural pesticide. My hope was high, and expectation set to see a Donald Duck like fanfare marching from the pond into the lush vineyard. Unfortunately, the info provided online was incorrect, and Donald and his troopers had already had their breakfast. Nevertheless, we got a private tour of the estate, which was still very informative and interesting, even for people like us who only use wine for goulash. Next, we stopped by Laura's friend, where we had milktart and tea, in a gated community that did not exist on Google maps. This was a completely different side to living in SA to the townships we had just passed to get there. We continued our journey on to Hermanus, where we did a coastal walk and spent the afternoon watching the abundant amount of whales play and eat in the bay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The days after, we spent a long time driving with a few highlights. Laura and I went bungeejumping from the 3rd highest bungee in the world at the Bloukrans bridge. This bridge allows for a freefall of roughly 170 meters. I can't deny my knees were weak, arms were heavy, nearly some vomit on my sweater already when seeing Laura and the other "contestant" being strapped up to jump off the bridge, but once it was my turn felt surprisingly calm. I knew I could not withdraw and live with the knowledge that my sister had more courage (or stupidity, depending on who you ask) than me. If you wonder what it feels like, it's exactly what you imagine. Air moving very fast past you, a gentle deceleration, and then a good 2 minutes of blood rushing to your head while you ungraciously hang upside down to be rescued. They must have a laugh up there wondering why stupid tourists pay for such a thing.
Tumblr media
Another highlight was buying my souvenir for this trip, which is an Orlando Pirates football jersey. After watching the film Captain Phillips, I got my inspiration on how to name my Fifa and FPL teams. Can't post the name here, or I'll get demonitized, but the true managers out there know what I'm talking about. Besided that, the shirt looks cool, and I am looking forward to wearing it on the pitch!

8 Benefits of Renting a Self-Drive Car in Guwahati
Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India, is a city that offers an incredible mix of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and modern urbanity. Whether you’re visiting for leisure, business, or just passing through on a road trip to Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, or other neighboring states, having a self-drive car can be a game-changer. Renting a self-drive car in Guwahati not only offers unparalleled freedom but also comes with a host of other benefits that make your journey more convenient and enjoyable. Here are eight compelling reasons to consider renting a self-drive car for your next trip to Guwahati.
1. Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace
One of the biggest advantages of renting a self-drive car is the freedom it provides. Unlike public transport or guided tours, you’re not bound by fixed schedules. Whether you want to spend extra time admiring the beauty of Umananda Island, stop for a tea break while driving through Assam’s lush green tea gardens, or take a detour to visit nearby Kaziranga National Park, a self-drive car gives you complete control over your itinerary.
2. Privacy and Comfort
Traveling in a self-drive car offers unparalleled privacy. You can travel with your family or friends without the intrusion of a chauffeur or other passengers. This allows for a more comfortable and intimate travel experience, where you can listen to your favorite music, have private conversations, or simply enjoy the journey without any distractions.
3. Cost-Effective for Group Travel
If you’re traveling with a group, renting a self-drive car is often more economical than booking multiple cabs or using public transport. Splitting the cost among travelers can make it a budget-friendly option while also providing the added convenience of traveling together.
4. Wide Range of Vehicle Choices
Car rental services in Guwahati offer a wide range of vehicles to choose from, depending on your needs. Whether you’re looking for a compact hatchback for city rides, a sedan for added comfort, or an SUV for off-road adventures in Northeast India’s hilly terrains, there’s something for everyone. Having the right vehicle can significantly enhance your travel experience.
5. Convenience of Booking and Flexibility
With the advent of online booking platforms, renting a self-drive car has never been easier. You can choose your desired vehicle, pick-up location, and rental duration with just a few clicks. Most car rental services in Guwahati also offer flexible options such as hourly, daily, or weekly rentals, allowing you to customize the rental period based on your needs.
6. Safety and Hygiene
Post-pandemic, safety and hygiene have become top priorities for travelers. Self-drive car rentals provide a safer alternative to public transport and shared cabs, as you’re in control of who gets in and out of the vehicle. Most rental companies ensure that their vehicles are thoroughly sanitized before each rental, giving you peace of mind during your journey.
7. Opportunity to Explore Hidden Gems
Guwahati and its surroundings are full of hidden gems that are often inaccessible by public transport. With a self drive car, you can explore offbeat destinations like the serene Chandubi Lake, the ancient Madan Kamdev temple ruins, or the picturesque villages around Assam. This allows you to experience the region’s authentic charm and beauty beyond the usual tourist spots.
8. Enhanced Driving Experience
For those who enjoy driving, the roads in and around Guwahati provide a delightful experience. From the well-maintained highways leading to Shillong to the winding roads of Assam’s countryside, driving through these scenic routes can be an adventure in itself. A self-drive car allows you to fully immerse yourself in the joy of the journey, making every moment memorable.
Tips for Renting a Self-Drive Car in Guwahati
To make the most of your self-drive car rental experience, here are a few tips:
Book in Advance: Especially during peak tourist seasons, it’s advisable to book your car rental in advance to secure the best deals and your preferred vehicle.
Check the Rental Agreement: Go through the terms and conditions carefully, including mileage limits, fuel policy, and additional charges, if any.
Inspect the Vehicle: Before hitting the road, inspect the car for any existing damage and report it to the rental company to avoid disputes later.
Carry Valid Documents: Ensure you have your driver’s license, identification proof, and other required documents.
