Why Timely Garage Door Repair is Essential for Davie Residents
Tumblr media
When it comes to maintaining your home, one aspect often overlooked is the garage door. Many homeowners in Davie and Weston may not realize just how important it is to keep their garage doors in good condition. While it might seem like a small thing, the garage door plays a crucial role in protecting your home, securing your valuables, and even maintaining the overall aesthetic of your property. Timely garage door repair can prevent more serious problems down the road and ensure that your home remains safe and functional.
In this article, we’ll explore why timely garage door repair is so essential for Davie residents and the importance of regular maintenance. We’ll also discuss how trusting professionals for garage door repair in Davie and Weston can save you both time and money.
1. Prevent Costly Repairs in the Future
One of the most important reasons for fixing your garage door promptly is to avoid bigger, more expensive repairs. Ignoring small issues such as a noisy door, slow movement, or a broken spring can lead to more significant problems over time. For example, if a minor issue with your garage door opener isn’t addressed, it could eventually cause the entire system to fail. The cost of repairing or replacing a complete system is often much higher than fixing a small part early on.
By investing in timely garage door repair in Davie, you can catch these minor issues before they turn into major problems. It’s always better to fix something small while it’s manageable rather than waiting for the problem to worsen and cost you much more in the long run.
2. Improve Safety and Security
A malfunctioning garage door can pose a serious safety risk to your family. Whether it’s a faulty sensor, a broken spring, or a door that won’t close properly, these issues can make it easier for intruders to break into your home. If your garage door won’t shut all the way, it could leave your home vulnerable, especially if it provides access to your living space.
Additionally, a malfunctioning door can be a danger to your loved ones. Broken springs or malfunctioning openers can cause the door to fall unexpectedly, leading to injuries or accidents. A properly functioning garage door ensures that it opens and closes smoothly, providing a safe environment for your family and preventing accidents that could have easily been avoided with timely garage door repair in Weston or Davie.
3. Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal
Your garage door is one of the first things people notice when they approach your home. An old, worn-out door with peeling paint or dents can significantly impact your home’s curb appeal. On the other hand, a well-maintained, functional garage door can make your home look more polished and inviting. It’s an important element of your home’s overall aesthetic.
By keeping your garage door in good repair, you help maintain your home’s appearance. Even a small repair, such as replacing a damaged panel or repainting the door, can make a big difference. If you’re looking to sell your home, a well-maintained garage door can also increase the value of your property and make a positive impression on potential buyers.
4. Increase Energy Efficiency
Did you know that a damaged garage door can affect your home’s energy efficiency? If your garage door isn’t properly sealed or insulated, outside air can easily enter your home, making it harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. This can lead to higher energy bills, as your HVAC system works harder to compensate for the lost air.
Timely garage door repair can ensure that your door is properly sealed and insulated, which will help keep your home at a comfortable temperature throughout the year. Whether it’s during the hot summer months in Davie or the cooler winters, a well-maintained garage door can help reduce your energy costs and improve your home’s overall efficiency.
5. Convenience and Peace of Mind
A garage door that isn’t working properly can be a huge inconvenience. Imagine trying to leave for work in the morning and your garage door won’t open, or worse, it’s stuck halfway. These types of issues can throw off your entire day and cause unnecessary stress.
Timely garage door repair in Weston and Davie can help you avoid these frustrating situations. When you address problems early, your garage door will function smoothly, and you won’t have to worry about being late for work or dealing with unexpected repairs. The peace of mind that comes with knowing your garage door is in good working order is invaluable.
6. Maintain Your Garage Door’s Lifespan
Like any part of your home, your garage door has a lifespan. However, neglecting repairs and maintenance can shorten its life. Regular care, including timely garage door repair, can help extend the lifespan of your door and its components.
Springs, tracks, rollers, and openers all work together to ensure the door operates smoothly. If one part starts to wear out or break, it can affect the entire system. By keeping up with repairs and maintenance, you can ensure that your garage door lasts as long as possible, saving you money on early replacements.
7. Professional Repair Services in Davie and Weston
Garage door repair isn’t something you should attempt to fix yourself unless you have the right skills and experience. Garage doors are heavy and complicated, and attempting DIY repairs can result in further damage or injury. Hiring a professional for garage door repair in Davie and Weston ensures that the job is done safely and correctly.
Professionals have the tools, knowledge, and experience to diagnose and repair any issue with your garage door. Whether it’s replacing a broken spring, repairing a misaligned track, or fixing a malfunctioning opener, an expert can handle it all. They can also provide regular maintenance to keep your garage door working like new, helping you avoid the need for costly repairs in the future.
8. The Benefits of Regular Garage Door Maintenance
While timely repairs are essential, regular maintenance is just as important. Scheduling routine inspections and maintenance for your garage door ensures that any small issues are caught early before they turn into larger problems. A maintenance check can include lubricating moving parts, inspecting the springs and cables, and ensuring that the opener is functioning properly.
By staying proactive with garage door maintenance, you can keep your door in top shape for years to come. Regular service helps avoid unexpected breakdowns and ensures that your garage door remains safe and functional.
Conclusion
In conclusion, timely garage door repair is not something to be overlooked. Whether you live in Davie, Weston, or any nearby area, taking care of your garage door ensures that your home stays safe, secure, and energy-efficient. By addressing small issues early, you can save money, avoid inconvenient breakdowns, and extend the lifespan of your door. If you’re experiencing problems with your garage door, don’t wait for the situation to worsen. Heya I know you reblogged it forever ago but I’m just now seeing the touch prompts and was wondering if you’d be up to writing something for the tiny hands in big hands prompt. I wanna see what you can come up with and who you picture this prompt for :) -🌸
!!! that's totally fine, no one sent anything anyways and I'm running into a wall with everything else rn so this was a great way to get my brain moving again
this was a really fun challenge! I bounced back and forth between a few ideas including a toddler Peter or a baby Harley, both with Tony, but honestly they felt too basic, so I did this instead? idk it felt like a missing scene in IM3 that we deserved, and I'm really happy with it so yeah. hope you like it!
prompt: tiny hands in big hands (from this list)
Read Hands to Guide You here on ao3
~~~
Tony shifted awkwardly from foot to foot while he waited for someone to answer the door. There was a car in the driveway, but there wasn’t much proof of life unless you count the creaking of the house. His baseball cap was pulled low over his eyes
Was it invasive to have JARVIS find out when she wasn’t working and the kid was at school so he could do this? Probably, but he didn’t really care.
He decided to knock just in case the doorbell wasn’t working.
“Just a minute!” A few moments later, a harried looking woman with fiery red hair answered the door. “Sorry ‘bout that. Is there something I can help you with?”
“Yes ma’am. I’m sorry to bother you, but are you Ms. Keener?”
She eyed him warily. “Who wants to know?”
He removed the cap so she could see his face. “Just a mechanic ma’am.”
Her eyes widened. “Lord have mercy on my soul,” she breathed. “Come on in.”
“I’m sorry for dropping in like this,” Tony said as he squeezed past her to stand in the entryway, “but I felt like we should talk.”
Ms. Keener showed him into the living room and gestured for him to sit. “Not to sound rude, but what does one of the most famous men in the world need to come to an ordinary family in Tennessee for?”
“You’re Harley’s mom right?”
“I know we don’t look terribly alike, but yes I am. Did he do something?”
“He saved my life,” Tony said simply. “Right before Christmas when everyone thought I was dead because a terrorist bombed my house, I landed nearby because I was looking into the death of Chad Davis and I had the coordinates programmed into the Iron Man suit. The suit ran out of power when I landed, not to mention the fact that it was malfunctioning anyways. Your son helped me repair it.”
She shook her head. “I’m sure he would have told me about that.”
“Would you have believed him?”
“I guess not,” she laughed. “How’d he manage to hide that from me?”
“Forgive me if I’m overstepping, but I think you were too busy to pay attention at the time. I’d put money on the Christmas rush, but he let me use the garage until I was back in the air and kept quiet about it. You raised a good kid, Ms. Keener.”
“Call me Macy,” she said. “I like to think I did alright, all things considered.”
“I know it’s not my place, but for what it’s worth, your ex-husband is missing out on one hell of a family.”
“Why thank you, Mr. Stark.”
“Tony, I insist.”
“Then thank you Tony,” she said. “It’s not always easy, but that bastard walking out was the best thing that ever happened to us.”
“That reminds me, if you ever need anything, don’t be afraid to ask. Consider me in your debt.”
“Oh, I couldn’t possibly-”
He waved her off. “Ask anybody that’s ever met me, I’m terrible with thank you’s, so this is the least I can do. Plus I wanted your permission for something else.”
“What’s that?”
“Your son is a talented engineer. I’d like to furnish your garage with equipment that won’t break down or hurt him if it fails so he can tinker around and work on projects at home.”
“You would do that for him?”
“In a heartbeat. It’s not every day you see a kid with such raw passion and talent for these kinds of things. I just want to give him the resources he needs to succeed. I’m prepared to set the whole thing up while he’s at school, I just need your go-ahead.”
“Well I-”
“Mommy?”
The adults turned at the sound of a small voice. A child stood at the base of the stairs. Harley’s sister, Tony realized.
“Abigail, momma’s busy right now. Give me just a minute, okay sweetheart?”
“No, no, it’s okay. You said her name was Abigail?”
She nodded. “I’m sorry, she had a doctor’s appointment this morning and she didn’t want to go back to school.”
“Macy, I said it’s fine. Actually, I have something for her too. Do you mind if I…?”
“No, go on ahead.”
He stood up and went to crouch down in front of the little girl. “Hey Abigail, I’m Tony, I’m a friend of your mom’s.”
“Hi Mr. Tony.” She sounded shy, so he sat down criss-cross-applesauce in front of her.
“Now, a little birdie told me that you lost your watch, is that right?”
She nodded.
Tony patted the front of his pockets. “Well, how about that?” He pulled out a new Dora watch, the same type Harley borrowed for him. “Was that something like what you lost?”
The girl gasped when she saw it. “That’s it! That’s my watch!”
“How about we put it on you, huh?”
She held out her hand, and Tony tried not to panic over how small and delicate they were. He wrapped the watch around her wrist and turned it on so it showed the time already programmed in.
“There you are, Little Miss. Let’s go show your mama, okay?” He held out his hand for her to take, and when she latched on to one of his fingers, his heart melted.
Abigail led him back over to the couch where he had been sitting before and ran excitedly over to her mom. “Look mommy, look!”
“I see,” Macy laughed. “Now what do we say?”
“Thank you, Mr. Tony.”
He knelt down in front of her so he could look her in the eyes. “You’re welcome, Little Miss. Now, if it’s okay with your mom, I need your help with something.” He glanced up at Macy, who nodded subtly.
“What is it?”
“I want to surprise your brother with something too, but you have to help me keep it a secret. Can you do that?”
She seemed to ponder this for a moment, and then nodded solemnly. “Yes I can,” she whispered conspiratorially in the way only small children can manage.
“Good,” he stage-whispered back. “You can’t tell him I was here, got it?”
“Got it. I promise, I won’t tell him anything.”
“Hmm, I don’t know if a promise is quite strong enough. Let’s shake on it.”
“Shake on it?” she asked.
“Like this.” Tony held out his hand to her and motioned for her to do the same. “Now you grab my hand- just like that, good job! And shake- one, two, three.” He guided her hand up and down, mimicking the handshakes he uses in board meetings. “You’re gonna have a killer handshake someday, Ace.”
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
Macy cleared her throat in an attempt to get their attention. “Is there something you came down for Abbie?”
“I just wanted to ask if I could have my after school snack even if I wasn’t at school.”
Tony looked at the clock, and sure enough the bus would be coming to drop kids off any minute.
“Sure honey. Go into the kitchen and sit at the table. I’ll be right there.”
“Okay! Bye Mr. Tony!”
“See you around, Little Miss.” He waved to her until she was out of sight. “I should get going. I can get the whole thing set up while Harley’s at school tomorrow. You got a number I can text if I need anything?”
She wrote one down on a post-it note and handed it to him. “Really Tony, thank you.”
“Feel free to use my number if you need anything at all,” he said in lieu of an actual response. “I meant what I said, I owe you.”
“Alright.”
Just then, he heard the bus pull up. “Thank goodness I walked here from town. You got a back door to this place?”
“Of course.”
Tony waited until Harley let the door slam to shut the door behind him, and walked out a ways before donning his baseball cap and looping back towards his hotel. He’d be back in the morning.
Truth or Dare-Part 5/20
Tumblr media
Summary: The Winchester sibling trio has been through so much in the last decade. From the night of their parents’ 30th wedding anniversary party where Sam and Dean eased Y/N from her innocence to Sam becoming a happily married lawyer with a kickass nurse of wife to the three of them now living in the same town they grew up in under the same roof where each of them came of age.  Y/N is a working mother of three,  her days spent helping the townsfolk make proper and suitable financial decisions while bustling about escorting her two oldest to school and her youngest, Mary Ellen, to daycare; Dean’s garage is the premiere body shop for classic restorations and  car maintenance; people from other state’s bring their vehicles to them to be repaired. Business at Winchester Wheels  is booming; Sam is the legal council for Winchester Wheels and has been since he moved back home almost 5 years ago. He has his work cut out for him dealing with the people Dean pisses off and threatens to sue the garage on at least a monthly basis.
After one lust-filled night, the siblings become more than family.  They become lovers. The three of them, together and separately.
One big loving family.
So when Y/N’s boss calls for her to take a much needed vacation, the six of them hit the road. What will happen? Will it bring them closer together or break them apart?
W/C: 1243
Warnings:  fluff
After the shenanigans at the cafe and RJ’s insistent revelation, the six Winchesters loaded into the rental vehicle and got back on the road.
“Where to first?” Sam asks, looking at a map on his phone.
“First stop, Dodge City!” Dean exclaims happily but frowns when he is met with groans. “What?”
“Dude, that is like your fantasy sabbatical,” Sam says, looking over his shoulder at Y/N to see her nodding in agreement. “You love everything to do with the Wild West. Me and Y/N, not so much. The kids are going to be so bored!”
Dean huffs and sighs. “Well just so you know, they have a zoo and a water park that I had planned to take everyone to. Do you want to just cross that off the list?”
Y/N could tell Dean had gotten his feelings hurt at their disregard for his agenda. She scooted forward in her seat and put her arms around his seat and onto his shoulders. “I’m sorry. I’m sure we’ll enjoy Dodge City.”
“Don’t knock it until you try it,” Dean responds and bends his head to kiss her hand. “We’re going to get there just in time for the 5:00 mock showdown between Wild Bill and Davis Tutt. You know Wild Bill got lucky Tutt was such a bad shot. It took ol’ Bill a few seconds longer to steady his gun. Worked out though, because he shot his opponent right in the heart!”
Y/N could tell from the tone of his voice and the slight change of pitch that Dean was excited to be able to witness such a remarkable, albeit remade, event in history. She felt bad about their initial reaction.
Tumblr media
“Oh my god! Did you see that?” Dean remarks as they walk away from the stage of the mock gun battle. “Bill was the fastest draw in the land.” Dean pretends to pull a gun from a holster on his side and makes a pistol with his finger and thumbs, “shooting” left and right; mimicking the sound of shots by blowing air out of his puckered lips.
Y/N shakes her head as she carries a sleepy Mary Ellen on her lap as RJ holds his uncle’s hand and Izabella holds her father’s non-gun one. As they walk down the street of the city decorated to look like an Old West town, they each take in the sights from the displays of the attire of times gone by.
She can not imagine having to wear such drab and concealing garb that the women wore back then. Added to the fact that they were usually also squeezed into a corset that was two sizes too small and Y/N wonders how they ever got anything done, much less felt like populating the world.
She looks at one of the pictures that is hanging on the wall. The Vandall Family were photographed in front of what Y/N assumed was their homestead. The husband and wife and their 13 kids were all lined up from tallest to shortest. The woman was also holding an infant in her arms so that made 14 times she had taken off all those layers and laid with her husband to get pregnant. Unfathomable to Y/N!
Back at the hotel they had gotten rooms at, she places Mary Ellen in the provided crib and closes the door to the adjoining room. Izabella and RJ are in the adults’ room with Sam and Dean watching cartoons so Y/N decides to take a shower while the baby naps.
As she is rinsing her hair, she hears the door open and feels a presence enter the room. She waits and just a few seconds later, Dean’s head pops around the curtain.
“What a lovely view,” he says as he eyes her up and down. “So sexy,” he continues with a smirk on his face. “And all mine.”
“Uh huh. What do you want?” Y/N asks, trying to act nonchalant, that the fact that Dean is ogling her naked form is not turning her on. But sure enough she feels the first of the tingles in her pussy as he licks his lips.
“Sammy said he would watch the kids so we can go out,” Dean tells her, his eyes still trailing up and down her body. “So Y/N, wanna go on a date with me?”
Y/N stops what she’s doing and looks at her brother. An actual date? One where they can be the couple they want to be; hold hands and kiss? A date where they don’t have to worry about who sees them together?! The thought of that alone gets her blood pumping and her heart beat rushing.
“Yea,” she answers delighted and anxious.
“Okay. Well, dress up little lady because I am taking you out on the town!” Dean imitates a cowboy as his smile stretches across his face. He winks and blows her a kiss before disappearing. She hears the bathroom door click shut and she waits until she is sure Dean is back in the other room before she squeals.
Their first date. The first time they can go out and be a couple. She hurriedly finishes washing before turning the water off and stepping out of the tub, wrapping the fluffy hotel towel around her.
She’s going on a date, her first official date. Ever!
Tumblr media
Knowing this is a special occasion, even if it is just for her, Y/N takes the extra time to style her hair the way she wants it and picks out the best blouse she had packed, pairing it with a pair of black trousers and her slip on booties.
She even puts on makeup, using the barely-ever-used eyeshadow palette to create a smoky eye effect. She tops that off with a thin layer of mascara and some blush on her cheeks. Looking in the mirror, the reflection shown back to her is of a full-grown woman and not the half-grown kid she was so used to seeing when she looked at herself.
Looking at her reflection, she now knows how she attracted both Dean and Sam because even she will admit with the way her clothes fit and her hair and makeup on point, she was beautiful and sexy.
She briefly wonders what Dean’s reaction will be and doesn’t have to wait long to find out. The sound of the key in the door draws her attention and she looks over as Dean walks in. He is dressed up also.
He is wearing a pair of dark blue jeans, with no holes or snags in them, a cinnamon colored henley under a multi-colored flannel, the colors distressed and faded. The jeans were tight around his thick thighs and groin, leaving little to the imagination. Y/N could melt into the floor right there.
“Hot damn,” Dean exclaims as he takes Y/N in. “I am one helluva lucky son of a bitch. You are gorgeous, baby girl.”
“Thanks, handsome. You look mighty fine yourself.”
“Ready to paint this town?”
“As I’ll ever be,” she answers with a smile.
Dean places his palm on the bottom of her back as they walk down the street heading to, what Y/N is sure, some cafe that serves lukewarm coffee, cold pie and has dirty ashtrays on each table.
Imagine her surprise when  Dean directs her to the exact opposite of her assumption.
"REPAIRED "
Cont.....
Chapter Three
The next morning...
On my way to the kitchen to make Ruby and I some sunnysides. She sits in a chair, facing the front window, a book in hand. "What's the word there kitten?". "Did you know monkey wrenches come in larger sizes"? she says sarcastically. "Ruby, what are you reading? Ruby lifts the open book above her head and announces.."Basic Mechanics "! "You could get a larger monkey and fix the radiator, couldn't you kid?" again sarcastically. "Yes I could, and I will". I kissed her cheek. Looking over her shoulder. "You think there's some darb in that book? Ruby says "maybe" I've flipped through the pages no marks or notes though. "I'm detecting"! She says.
The horn rings. "Hello..Boss? "Who is this? " I'm not doin it Boss! says Edna." I won't! "Edna you're the best mark for this job. " Look, just find a nice shop and bring out your, well, feminine side." " Boss I just can't. "Edna...I said. " Boss if I do this you'll owe me big, I mean Big!" "Think Clark Gable on the inside and Marilyn Monroe on the outside" I said. " ohhh hellfire"!
Edna's obscenities fade with the click of the blower.
There was plenty to do today. Ruby and I went to meet George's friends. We met at Pops. As Ruby and I entered both Nick and Carol sat in a corner booth. Carol crying. We introduced ourselves and copped a squat. " Carol"? says Ruby. "Why don't you tell us about George." " ohh my George" says Carol. " I can't believe it " (sobbing). "His poor mama is just devastated " " You know Helen Cooper?" "Sure. She is gruff with loads of people, but she and I get along swell." "And George was a great guy. Always polite. "We held hands all the time, ya know.? And went to the pictures ever weekend". " George was going off to College this fall". "Always too smart for his own good "Nick says. "What do you mean by that, Nick? I said." Ehh..I know nothing from nothing, he said.
Nick gets angry. "I'll blow em down, whoever it is!! Nick's eyes tear up. " He was like a brother to me. We grew up here at Pops "You mentioned he was like your brother." Ruby asks. "Neither of us had a father, we'd talk about it"
"What they might be like" "We used to drink out of the same bottle, as they say. Nick gets angry again. "SAY What are you doing about this, have you caught the hatchet man who did this"? "Not yet Nick. I said. "Has there been anything strange happening around George?"asks Ruby. " Something unusual?" "We just recently at the Dealership.."Dealership "? I asked. "Basic Mechanics". says Ruby.
"Spill it, Spill it all. I said.
Carol says. There were cars missing, receipts that were doubled "Cars that were bought way over true price ". I'm the Secretary for the owner Larry Winthrop and Nick works in the shop with Hal Davis." " And George "? "George worked at the paper, mostly picture taking. " We heard Larry and Hal fighting the other night " " Yeah, says Nick." "They've got some flimflam goin' on "Both of them are in cahoots on some sting. says Nick. "Hal slways smells like some kind of tiger milk" says Carol. "A boozer huh?" I said. They went deeper into the story, as we listened. " So you all witnessed this this argument "? I said. "Yeah" " What about "the usual place"?, any ideas says Ruby? "The garage maybe"? "No clue Nick says. "Carol, George and I went to find out what the chisel was." The peep on it, ya know?, says Nick".
" Now you two listen here. This is gonna be like a pebble in your loafers, but you keep your butts down.! "Let us do our jobs. "US! says Ruby. " umm Yeah, Us, that's right ". "No more pokin around the dealership, ya hear?! I said. "But what about work? says Nick. "Be as normal as you can". " Listen I've...We've, (Ruby smiles) got a plan under way. "Nick, Carol..Ruby says, " You two call if you need anything, savvy? Carol and Nick nod. Carl pulls up. Ruby and I pull away.
Meanwhile pulling up at the dealership is Edna. Driving a shiny midsized Chevy. The car, a looker but barely drivable. We needed a bait car of our own. After parking the car she opens the door and steps out. Edna is dressed to the nines. Charlotte hat, mink stole a slinky dress and some knockout shoes. As uncomfortable as she is, she's quite a dame. The Right Moment
Hello this is more Marvel (not that anyone asked for more marvel oops). Like I said before I’m always a slut for Tony Stark so I had to write this out. Especially since I’ve always wanted to play with the ‘Soulmates AU’ thing.
Tumblr media
Tony Stark x female!Reader
Warnings: cursing, age gap
Takes place during IM2
6,650 words
The words were a messy scrawl against your skin. It was only a few shades darker than your skin tone, like every other soul mark in the world, making it look more like a birthmark than a tattoo. Not that anyone would see the mark and confuse it for a tattoo.
Nobody was born with his or her soul mark. It usually appeared in the early teens, around puberty, but the soul marks were more than just words on skin, marks on flesh. It was a part of who someone was. It was a quick glimpse into their future. A soul mark was the first sentence your soulmate would one day say to you. It was a moment in time etched on your body.
You slowly let your finger trace the four cluttered words on the right side of your ribcage. The handwriting was rushed and messy. Chaotic. It looked like the handwriting of someone who was always busy and scribbled notes wherever they could find space. That’s what you always imagined at least. The style of it somehow made the phrase look that much better though.
Looking for me, sunshine?
The words had appeared on your skin one random Saturday morning a few weeks after you turned twelve. Not everyone in the world got soul marks. There was no hard science behind it that said who would and wouldn’t get one. Scientists who studied the phenomenon said that genetics had nothing to do with it. Despite that, you had always assumed you wouldn’t get one. No one in your family had one, except maybe a great great great grandma on your mom’s side, but no one that anyone remembered.
Your mother had been so proud when she saw the words, as if you had done something special to deserve them. Your older sister gushed about how lucky you were. At only 12 years old you hadn’t fully grasped the concept of soulmates, but it excited you all the same. You thought you were lucky too.
Getting a soul mark at all had been nothing short of a miracle, but the fact that it was a simple, succinct mark was just pure luck. There had been a girl in high school whose soul mark took up all of her back. Apparently, her soul mate was quite the talker. Still, you always thought having a soul mark taking up all of your back would be better than having some obscene sentence out where others could see. A guy you met during your first year in college had the words, ‘I’d let you fuck me any day of the week’ written on his forearm in a loopy, fancy font. He seemed rather proud of it though, so you assumed he didn’t share your opinion. Then of course there were the overly plain soul marks. There were probably millions of people out there with the words, ‘Hey there’, ‘Hi’, and ‘How are you?’ written on their bodies. They were probably just as protective of their marks as you were with yours, but it had to be a pain having God knows how many people say those words to them all the time.
“Girl, are you ready, yet??”
You jumped at the voice behind the door, “Oh, yeah, almost. Be right out, Amber.”
The sound of heels walking away from the locked bathroom door made you turn back toward the mirror you had been looking in. Your eyes drifted over the words one last time before you turned to look at the dress hanging on the towel rack behind you. It was something you had bought proudly, but the moment you brought it home you questioned it. It flashy and bold with dark gold sequins decorating the entire thing. The dress loosely came down to right above your knees. It was a deep v-neck dress with two thin straps that went over your shoulder, one connecting higher up to the dress that covered your sides and the other further down to connect at the dress that sat on your lower back. You scrunched up your nose before just grabbing the dress and turning back around.
Admittedly, you had always hoped you wouldn’t have to wait long for your soulmate. Your mother would always hush you when you complained about the wait, ‘Everything comes at the right moment. Be patient.’
Knowing what you knew now, it was probably a good thing your soulmate wasn’t at the high school you attended. Most of those guys were still living in that same, small town content with not seeing the world. Now, you love your hometown, but it didn’t have what you wanted. What you needed. You craved exploration and adventure. You had dreams and goals that involved venturing out of comfort zones.
Still, you wondered what it was like for the people who met their soulmates so early on. There was a couple you met in your junior year of college that had met each other two days after they got their soul marks. They had to wait a total of two days, and here you were pushing on seventeen years.
Quickly, you slipped your short dress on and left the bathroom to find your roommate. You had met Amber Reyes as a senior in college when you went to rent an apartment near the campus. The two of you got along swimmingly, and when it came time to spread out it just so happened that both of you had your sights set on the Big Apple. Amber had a job laid out in New York City, and you had just been accepted into NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine.
The first year or so had been rough. The two of you were living in a shoebox sized apartment in Hell’s Kitchen working your asses off. Med school was as difficult as you knew it would be and Amber’s first job hadn’t worked out leaving her looking for new work. Still, the two of you had each other and with a little elbow grease it all worked out. Now Amber was running her own garage doing various auto repairs and you were a Resident at New York Hospital working in the Emergency Department.
Life was good, though your apartment was still kind of shitty.
“-look we’ll just meet you there, Kyle.” Amber said into her cell phone. She was leaning against the living room couch wearing a tight white, one shoulder dress that ended above her knees. It made her dark, flawless skin glow. Her long, brown hair was pulled up into a tight, clean ponytail. As per usual, she looked like an absolute goddess. Amber’s brown eyes shot over to you, “M’hm, just don’t do anything stupid. Love you too.”
You lifted your hands and glanced down at yourself, “Are you sure this dress doesn't make me look like a hooker?”
“Oh, it absolutely does.” Amber smirked and walked toward you, “It’s perfect. Now what are you going to do with your hair?”
“I was just gonna leave it down.” You shrugged then squished your cheeks with your hands. “Can you help me with my make-up?”
“Duh.” She replied and headed back towards the bathroom. Amber was the most brilliant mechanic that you’ve ever met. Granted, you hadn’t met many, but still. She could take apart just about anything on earth and put it together in better shape than it had originally been in. Amber also was infinitely better than you were at applying make-up. She made it seem almost effortless. “So, Kyle is getting our tickets for the after party right now.”
“Sounds good.” You replied nonchalantly as you glanced at the words that were half showing on her bare shoulder blade. All you could see were the words, ‘Holy shit’, but you knew the entire thing read, ‘Holy shit, my soulmate is hot’. Amber was lucky in the sense that she was able to put together some of the mystery of how she’d meet her soulmate. She knew from the beginning that she’d probably be the first one to speak in the conversation considering her soulmate used the word soulmate in the sentence.
Kyle Davis was Amber’s soulmate and they had met a few months after the two of you had settled down in your broken down, shoebox of an apartment. He was a mechanical engineer that stopped by where Amber had worked at the time to pick up a few parts as a favor to his employer. All Amber had said after watching his failed attempts to flirt with other customers was, ‘That’ll be 143 dollars, Casanova’, and he had replied exactly how Amber expected someone would one day reply to her.
You had spent years of your life wondering about how you’d meet your soulmate, but you had no idea how it could play out. The words on your side could be the second part of the conversation or the first. It worked either way.
“What are you thinking so hard about?” Amber asked as she grabbed the desk chair and dragged it into the bathroom for you to sit on.
You dropped into the chair with a sigh, “Just nothing.” Amber rolled her eyes giving you a dead panned look. You shook your head, “Seriously, I just… I’ve been thinking about my mark for the last few days.”
“Why?” Amber questioned and moved some hair out of your face before grabbing your stash of make-up.
You rubbed your hand over the material of your dress that sat just above your words, “I don’t know. It’s been bothering me lately.”
“Bothering you?”
“Yeah. It itches.” You replied and tilted your head up so Amber could work her magic.
“You know”, Amber began, “Some people say that your mark itches when you get closer to meeting your soulmate.”
Your eyes widened and Amber scolded you about the exaggerated facial expression, “Really? Did yours?”
“Mine didn’t, no, but Kyle said his felt weird for a few days before.” Amber said. Her voice trailed off as she focused on the task at hand. You had read all the online stories and self-help books on soul marks and soulmates. A part of you had hoped maybe it would shed some light on the process, but it didn’t really help anything. All you really got from it was the fact that there was no typical case. Soul marks were weird things with minds of their own. “Who knows, maybe this means you’re getting close.”
“God, I hope so.” You mumbled under your breath. After waiting for this long, a part of you didn’t even know what you’d do once you met the person. You tended to be pretty independent in nearly everything you did. It was part of the reason why any past relationships you had never lasted long. Dating between two people who weren’t fated for each other was a struggle enough, but your desire to handle things on your own and not open up certainly didn’t help the matter. Despite all this though, you desperately wanted to know. Even if it ended up being a disappointment, you just wanted the answer now.
Amber smirked as she put on the finishing touches, “Maybe they’ll be at the party tonight.”
You couldn’t stop the small smile that bubbled onto your lips, “You really think so?”
“Take a good look in the mirror, [Surname].” Amber smirked, “Who the hell wouldn’t fall for you?”
Tumblr media
“Hello, gorgeous.”
“Are you here alone?”
“Can I buy you a drink?”
“Damn, girl.”
Amber’s words had gotten into your head, and now at the start of every new conversation you were basically holding your breath. You weren’t purposely getting your hopes up. In fact, you had a running mantra in your head that sounded a lot like the motto your mother introduced to you a week after you got the damn mark.
‘Everything comes at the right moment. Be patient.’
“Be patient, [Name].” You whispered to yourself, but you could hardly stand still.
“Why do you look so nervous? I should be the one who looks nervous. Shit, Amber, do I look nervous?”
You tore your gaze away from the crowd to see Kyle was no longer talking to you but was now facing Amber. He was wearing a fancy suit with a dark colored, neat tie that was hilariously uncharacteristic of him. You were used to seeing Kyle in worn down T-shirts and jeans. His medium length, dirty blond hair was combed back neatly, but despite Amber’s arguments he hadn't shaved the facial hair above his upper lip and across his jawline.
“You look fine.” Amber replied and adjusted his tie. “Though maybe you’d look better if you had listened and shaved—”
Kyle rolled his blue eyes, “I told you, Amber. I had to keep it. What if I run into Tony Stark? It might impress him!”
“And I told you that was the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” Amber replied with an irritated sigh. “Besides, if you really want that job at Stark Industries, your best bet is to find Pepper Potts. She’s the CEO now. Talk to her about your designs.”
“Oh, but hon… Tony Stark.” Kyle replied, “If I could find him in this crowd somewhere and talk to him…”
“The mission tonight is to get a job, not stalk your idol.” Amber argued.
Kyle turned back to you, “Tell her, [Name].”
You grinned at him, “I also think your best bet is Pepper Potts. In fact, anyone other than Tony Stark is probably a good bet.”
Kyle frowned and mumbled something under his breath about his role model. Unlike Kyle, you didn’t have Stark’s biography memorized, but you got enough information off the news. He went from being a playboy, genius, billionaire with his hands in the weapons manufacturing business to some sort of self-declared superhero named Iron Man. From what you’ve seen in the news, he seemed like he was doing pretty good. He stopped Stark Industries from making weapons when he found out they were going to the wrong people, saved lives, and made a difference.
Of course, you weren’t too startled by the fact that it didn’t last long.
Sure, he was still Iron Man so he was still out helping people, which was great, but the hero obviously couldn’t keep his wild side down. Hell, the news had a field day when he randomly gave the position of CEO to his personal assistant. Now, based on what you’ve seen, you couldn’t figure out if he had done so to dedicate his life to helping the greater good or getting drunk off his ass and making poor life decisions. There were certainly more headlines about the poor life decisions than there was the heroic stuff.
“Now go. You’ll do great.” Amber smiled and pressed her lips at the corner of his mouth before pushing him off. You watched Kyle nervously make his way through the large crowd to where a red headed woman was talking to a group of people in business suits. Hopefully, the nerves would wear off and the friendly, easy-going Kyle would come back out. You tore your gaze away from him to see Amber grinning at you.
“What?”
She chuckled, “That smile hasn’t slipped from your lips since we walked through those fancy ass glass doors.”
You rolled your eyes at her, but the smile she spoke about didn’t falter. Despite the fact that nearly two hours had passed since you got here, you couldn’t shake this feeling of excitement. It was spilling out of you. Hell, it took everything in you not to just randomly start laughing. You felt downright giddy.
“I’m just in a really, really good mood.” You shrugged. Amber gave you a knowing look and you didn’t bother to mention the fact that your soul mark had been tingling since you walked in. That had to be a good sign, right?
“I think I’m gonna get a drink.” Amber replied simply.
You motioned for her to grab an empty table off to the side, “Wait here. I’ll get us both something. The usual for you?”
“Please and thank you.” She nodded.
You made your way through the crowd toward where the large bar sat in the corner. There were a few people leaning against the bar, but it was otherwise abandoned. You assumed this was due to the fact that servers were walking around everywhere taking orders themselves. That saved you a hassle. Nearly all of the barstools were open where you came to stand, but you didn’t bother grabbing a seat. You wouldn’t be long.
“Two dry martinis. One with olives and the other with a twist.” You ordered when the bartender caught your eye. He nodded and went to work while you waited patiently. The wall behind the bartender was an enormous mirror that you could see yourself in. The smile on your face was certainly large, but you hoped the excitement of it all didn’t make you look like a crazy person.
You chuckled and turned to look over the crowd. Was it really possible that your soulmate was in this very same room as you? The possibility existed that maybe they weren’t. Maybe all this excitement and soul mark tingling was just a false alarm, but the thought that the answer to the biggest question in your life was breathing the same shared airspace as you was exhilarating and terrifying and wonderful all at the same time. Quickly, you tried to push down your excitement. Nothing would be worse than to go home empty handed then wake up early for a long shift in—
“Looking for me, sunshine?”
The distinct, baritone of a male voice spoke from beside you and it shut down every single thought in your brain. It took every fiber of your being not to jump out of your shoes. Hearing the words made you feel like a fire was lit in your chest. Like something in your very soul moved at his voice. The tingling on your right side was replaced with a feeling of warmth. As if an invisible hand were tracing the words as they rolled in your mind. The fact that the voice was vaguely familiar didn’t even click with you until you turned to face him with a grin.
The smile you had managed to keep on your face all night slowly began to crack and slip away as you stared at the man beside you. His voice was vaguely familiar because you did know his voice. Hell, he had been on the news doing some interview not even a day ago. His face was one you knew because damn near everyone in the world knew who this guy was.
Tony fucking Stark.
There was no mixing him up with some other guy. He leaned against the bar beside you facing the huge mirror while you faced the crowd. His eyes were focused on you, but the clear, red glass of his sunglasses tinted the brown color. He had on an expensive dark burgundy suit over a black dress shirt with no tie. He even had on the same smirk that he wore in most of the pictures you had seen him in and not a soul in the United States of America, hell the world, wouldn’t recognize the unique goatee surrounding that stupid smirk.
Maybe he didn’t notice the absolute panic attack going on in your mind, but he pushed himself off the bar slightly, leaning closer to you. The bartender came back with your drinks then left to cater to another guest. Mr. Stark glanced at the two tall glasses.
“Oh, don’t tell me you’re not here alone.” Mr. Stark spoke again.
You had to say something. Words needed to come out of your mouth now, but what would you say? No matter what you said he would know. The next words to come out of your mouth would be marked on his skin somewhere in your handwriting. If you said nothing, then would he even know? It’s not like a soul mark could say, ‘Your soulmate says nothing because she’s an indecisive dumbass’.
“Miss?” He questioned as he leaned forward. His smirk had widened as if he were impressed by the fact that you were speechless. As if it were his mere presence alone that could stun women into stupor.
The words left your mouth before you even had time to consider them. In an exasperated, ‘I’m giving up on the world’ tone, you sighed, “Oh, fuck me.”
That made the smirk fall off his face as quickly as your original smile had disappeared. Mr. Stark pulled his glasses off making it easier to see his wide, shocked eyes. He blinked once, twice… three times, before shaking his head, “Who told you to say that? Did Pepper put you up to this?”
“Oh my God.” You put a hand to your face as if that would help steady the tilting world around you, “You’re Tony Stark. Tony fucking Stark. Are you kidding me?”
“Rhodey then? Did he tell you to say that?” Mr. Stark questioned further. He slipped his glasses into his jacket pocket and his hand lingered over his left side briefly. “Maybe…Happy? Was it Happy?”
You turned around quickly, grabbing your martini, and quickly began to down it. The alcohol burned your throat, but as soon as you had finished yours you picked up Amber’s. Mr. Stark grabbed your wrist before you could bring the glass to your lips and your eyes darted to his in panic. The two of you just stood like that for a moment. You with a martini glass halfway to your lips, panic in your eyes, and Tony Stark holding your wrist with disbelief in his own warm, brown eyes.
The party around you hadn't stopped. People still milled about laughing and talking as if nothing had changed. Yet here you stood feeling like the world had dropped out from under your feet.
“You’re really my soulmate, aren’t you?” Mr. Stark commented in incredulity with a slight shake of his head. The corners of his mouth quirked up as a chuckle rolled out. It wasn’t the typical smirk though; it almost seemed like a genuine smile.
“Is this really happening?” You said in a whispered tone.
“Oh, it’s really happening, sunshine.” He said and took his hand off your wrist to grab the glass. Mr. Stark set it against the bar countertop. He grinned, “You are gorgeous, by the way, I didn’t get to that part of my little spiel.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat, “You’re Tony Stark.”
“I think we’ve already established that. The question is, who are you?”
“I-I’m [Name].” You said.
“[Name]…?” He questioned, obviously fishing for your last name for some reason.
“[Surname].” You finished then shook your head, “Listen, Mr. Stark-”
He rolled his eyes, “Don’t start that. Just Tony.”
“Mr. Stark”, You ignored him, “This has to be a mistake. I’m not— and you— I don’t think we’d even get along, let alone work out.”
He shrugged, “Obviously, you’re wrong. My words are on your skin, and yours on mine. Where are my words, by the way?”
“I uh- um, here.” You lifted your hand and set it over your mark.
Tony’s eyebrows rose in surprise, “That’s interesting.”
“How so?”
His smirk returned as he grabbed your hand softly and pulled you a step closer to him. You froze in surprise as he moved your hand to rest inside his suit jacket on top of the left side of his ribcage, “My words are right here.”
“Really?” You blurted out. There were myths and rumors that the closer the soul marks were to being in the same place, the stronger the bond between the soulmates would be. You had never met anyone who had soul marks in the same place, and the closest you had seen yourself was a couple where one mark was on the woman’s ankle and the other on her partner’s hip.
“We could leave, and I could show you.” Tony said slyly. “I mean, to be honest, I always imagined the context of your words to be a little different.”
You snatched your hand away from his chest and crossed your arms, “You wish.”
“I most certainly do.” You could feel your face heat up as you unconsciously took a step back away from the bar and away from your supposed soulmate. His smile faltered slightly, but he didn’t hesitate to take a step toward you. “Listen, I was serious about that first part. Let’s get out of here. Go get something eat or find a place where we can get a real drink.”
“A place where we can just talk?” You pressed.
Tony stuck his hands into his pocket and nodded, “We do have a lot to talk about.”
You rolled the idea around in your head for a few seconds before nodding your head. He grinned in response and offered you his arm to lead you out and you took it after only a brief moment of hesitation. It was easy to conclude that you were torn on this matter. The curious part of you, the part looking for answers, was more than happy to go to some random bar and chat up a storm. When did his soul mark appear? Was it the same time as yours? Had his been feeling weird up to this point? You’d chat up a storm to find the information you wanted.
However, this was not some random guy in a room of people or the guy next door. This was Tony Stark. The billionaire, the playboy, the narcissistic superhero that people either adored or hated. Was this the kind of guy you wanted to know? Yeah, he was your soulmate according to the words on your chest, but sometimes these soulmate things didn’t work out. It was rare, but these things did exist. Even if you decided to not judge him on his very public mistakes or the women he flaunted, he was still a powerful man with a lot of enemies.
What exactly were you getting yourself into?
Tumblr media
The place he had in mind was literally only a few blocks away from where the after-party event was being held. After only a five minute, rather uncomfortable walk, you found yourself sitting in a booth in the very back of an old diner across from Tony Stark. The two of you stood out among the other customers in your formal clothes, but after a couple minutes passed nobody seemed to be paying either of you any more attention.
“Well, look at you Tony, all dolled up.” An older waitress came by with a wide smile. He grinned and she continued, “The usual?”
“You know me well, Ethel.” He replied and glanced at you, “You hungry? I usually get a thing of fries here. It’s good, we can share?”
You nodded, “Sure.”
Tony glanced back at Ethel, “She’ll have a scotch too.”
“She looks like she could use one.” Ethel commented, “What’d you do to the poor girl?”
Tony held his hands up in mock surrender. Ethel gave you a warm smile before walking off. You readjusted the hem of you dress and pulled it down, so it covered a little bit more of your legs.
He leaned across the table slightly, “So, how do we start this heart to heart—”
“Do you even want a soulmate?” You asked bluntly.
Tony blinked in surprise, “Wow, ok, go straight for the jugular there.”
“Seriously, I mean it.” You said, “I never took you as the kind of guy who would even want to settle down with one person. You seem pretty pleased with how your life is now.”
“That’s a fair question.” He leaned back into the booth and didn’t immediately answer your question. Finally, he shrugged nonchalantly with a smile on his face, but his brown eyes looked worried, “I don’t know. I really don’t. What about you?”
You forced a chuckle and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear, “Every little girl dreams about her soulmate, right?”
“Knowing what you know now, knowing that it’s me, do you still want one?” He asked. Ethel came back with two glasses and a bottle of scotch. It looked a lot more expensive than this place could handle and you wondered if the guy in front of you had anything to do with that. She set them down on the table with a smile before leaving. Tony grabbed the bottle and poured some amber liquid into both glasses. He set the bottle down and pushed the glass toward you before grabbing his own, “Do you even want to consider the possibility of having Tony Stark as your soulmate?”
He took a large drink of his scotch but didn’t tear his eyes from yours. You tapped your fingers against the glass and tried to ignore the chill running down your back. The diner was much colder than the party and this dress was hardly made for cold temperatures. You twisted your lips in thought, “That’s a really good question. I’m supposed to, aren’t I? Judging a book by its cover is wrong.”
“True, but this book can’t really deny most of the things on its cover.” Tony said, “And there is a lot of things on my cover. Good and bad.”
“Like being Iron Man?”
He smirked and nodded, “Yeah, that’s one of them.”
“A good one or a bad one?”
“I was going to let you decide on that.” He said then added, “Though I will admit, I was hoping the whole superhero gig would add some points with you. I hear the whole ‘saving lives’ and ‘being a hero’ thing is quite the turn on for ladies.”
You bit back a chuckle, “Admittedly, the Iron Man thing did win you a decent number of points.” You took a quick drink of the scotch, ignoring the burning taste and the growing smile on Tony’s face, then said, “But then there’s the whole ‘archenemies’ and ‘worrying about you dying’ bit that loses you nearly as many points as you had earned.”
His smile faltered on that last statement, and even though you meant it mostly as a joke he seemed to tense at the words. You took another sip of your drink and rubbed your arm with your free hand to try and get rid of the goose bumps that had formed. Tony shrugged out of his suit jacket and offered it to you over the table. You opened your mouth to argue, but the look on his face put a halt to your words.
“Thanks.” You mumbled and shrugged into the dark burgundy coat. It was obviously too big for you, but it was warm and smelled nice.
Moments later, Ethel came back with a basket of fries that she set between the two of you. Tony thanked her sincerely, and you gave her a brief smile. She left again, as quickly as she had come, and it was silent between the two of you again.
“You know, it kind of sucks.” Tony said suddenly making your eyes widen. He snatched a fry from the basket and quickly ate it while you waited for him to finish his thought. “We find each other, and you know everything about me but I know absolutely nothing about you. Kinda seems unfair if you ask me.”
You grabbed a fry for yourself, “From my perspective, I know a lot about you, but now I have to sit here and wonder how much is true, how much is false, and whether or not any of it actually represents who you are.”
“So, I guess we can agree that it sucks from both sides of things?” He commented. You chuckled and nodded in agreement. Tony finished his drink and grabbed the bottle to pour himself some more, “I bet you never pictured meeting your soulmate would look like this.”
You let out a laugh, “Yeah, you can say that again.”
“Tell me about how you pictured it.”
For a moment you didn’t say anything. The only person you had ever shared your daydreams with was your older sister. It wasn’t so much that you were ashamed of the fantasies, everyone with a soul mark had their own, but saying it out loud just made it seem that much more real. You were always afraid that if you said your hopes and daydreams out loud too many times then eventually you would start believing it might actually happen that way and you didn’t want to be disappointed.
Tony noticed your hesitance and spoke up, “I never really thought about it when I was a kid, and as a young adult I didn’t really give a damn…” He chuckled, “Thinking back now though, the funniest thing would have to be the way my mom’s face looked when she saw the words ‘Oh, fuck me’ written on her 12 year old’s chest.”
You couldn’t help but let out a bark of laughter at his words and he smiled along with you. That did have to be pretty bad. His mom probably thought he’d end up with some crazy woman or something.
“I’m the only person in my family with a soul mark.” You admitted with a small smile, “My parents didn’t have them, but they were still so close and just perfect for each other.” You let your eyes linger on the glass in front of you, “I had a few daydreams on how meeting my soulmate would pan out, but I guess the similar theme in all of them was just excitement. If my parents, who weren’t marked for each other, were so perfect and close…how much better would my relationship one day be?”
Your eyes lifted back to the man in front of you only to find his gaze hadn't moved an inch from you. Nervously, you finished your drink and then pulled the coat around you tighter before reaching for another fry.
Tony cleared his throat, “How do you think your family would react if you called them and told them who your soulmate was?”
You chuckled, “My older sister would lose her mind. She kinda has a low-key crush on you. Even her husband knows it.” Tony laughed quietly as you continued, “My dad would be worried. He’d probably threaten your life a bit.”
“And your mom?” Tony questioned in amusement.
“She would be torn for sure.” You said confidently, “She’d probably rotate from being super worried to asking about when I was going to give her grandbabies.”
Tony choked on the scotch he was drinking and that made you chuckle to himself. He pulled the glass away and cleared his throat. He looked like he wanted to say something or maybe comment on what you said, but you didn’t give him the chance, “How come you called me sunshine?”
“I’m sorry?”
“My words.” You repeated, “I always thought my soulmate would be some sort of southern gentleman or…I don’t know. Sunshine just doesn't seem like the kind of pet name you would use.”
Tony licked his bottom lip in thought and he undid the top button of his shirt. A light blue glow peeked out from his shirt, but your eyes lingered on an odd looking set of angry, inflamed lines that briefly could be seen when he undid his shirt . Your attention was pulled away when he began to speak, “Honestly?”
“Yeah.”
“I noticed you earlier in the night.” Tony said and he tried to sound as nonchalant as he could, but his shoulders were on the tense side and his eyes looked worried again, “The dress and your legs are definitely what first caught my attention, but then I saw you smiling and… damn, you were smiling. I don’t know if I could even call it just a smile, you were grinning ear to ear.” His lips quirked up slightly, “I lost sight of you for a while, but then I saw you heading toward the bar and I thought I’d strike up a conversation. A few hours had passed so I figured maybe you had to be at least a little tired of being so happy, but there you were grinning again.” Tony shrugged, “I don’t know what you were so happy about, but you were just beaming at the bar and I swear you lit up the entire room with that smile.”
You ducked your head down slightly as a small smile grew on your lips. His answer wasn’t the kind of answer you expected from him. Hell, none of this conversation was exactly what you expected of him. A determined idea settled in your mind and you looked back up at him with a smirk, “Thanks, Mr. Star— uh, Tony.”
He raised his glass at you slightly, “My pleasure, [Name].”
The two of you talked for a few more hours. Eventually the fries and the alcohol ran out, but the conversation didn’t. It was mostly just light-hearted banter and the trading of information. You told him more about your family and background, and he answered nearly every question you rattled off to him. You avoided the heavier topics, like the fact that you knew his parents were dead or the whole kidnapped and held hostage thing, because you didn’t want something to make this night go wrong.
A buzzing in your purse made you stop mid-sentence and reach over for it. The moment you pulled it out and saw Amber’s name flashing across the screen your face paled, “Oh shit. Oh shit, oh shit.”
“Everything ok?” Tony questioned.
“I ditched my friend at that party. I went to get her a drink and…”
“And you ran into me.” Tony chuckled, “It’s fine. I should probably leave.”
The tone of his voice and the worry in his eyes made you pause skeptically. You thought this impromptu date of sorts was going very well, but occasionally you’d notice the look of worry grow. You stood up and let Amber’s call go to voicemail, “So now what?”
“Now, I get your number and you go home and dream about how hot and amazing your soulmate turned out to be.” Tony replied cheekily as a confident mask covered the look of worry he had worn only moments ago. He reached forward and pulled something out of the pocket of his jacket. You smiled and gave him your number without hesitation. He nodded, “I’ll have someone come pick you up and take you anywhere.”
“You don’t have to do that.” You argued as he sent out a message on his phone.
He shoved it into his pocket and shook his head, “I insist. Happy’s a great driver.”
“Happy?”
“He works for me. Good guy.” Tony replied. You tried to shrug out of his jacket, but he reached forward and held the lapels in place. “Keep it.”
You nodded once, “Ok. Well, it was… really good to meet you? I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say now.” You both chuckled, but you pushed on, “I’m really glad you came up to speak to me, Tony.”
“Yeah, me too.” He replied softly. You didn’t know what to expect, but Tony leaning forward to pull you into a hug as not it. After a moment you hugged him back and tried not to let your mind roll to the cliché thoughts of how right this felt. He pulled away with a smile, “I’ll call you.”
Then without another word Tony left and you sat down to wait for the car he had called for you. Your soulmate was completely out of view now and a part of you wondered if it had all been some sort of weird ass hallucination. The cologne on the expensive jacket around your shoulders told you otherwise though.
Your cellphone buzzed again, and you picked it up expecting another text or call from Amber. Instead, it was a single text from an unknown number.
The Environmental Impact of Garage Door Materials
Garage doors play an essential role in homes and businesses, providing security and protection. However, beyond their functionality, the materials used in their construction can have a significant environmental impact. As awareness of sustainability increases, many homeowners and businesses are opting for garage door materials that reduce environmental harm. Let's take a closer look at the most common materials used for garage doors and their respective environmental footprints.
Steel Garage Doors
Steel is a popular material for garage doors because of its durability and affordability. However, its environmental impact is a concern. The manufacturing of steel requires a substantial amount of energy and produces significant carbon emissions. Steel also contributes to resource depletion since it’s mined from the earth, and although it is recyclable, only a small portion of steel garage doors are recycled at the end of their life cycle. On the positive side, steel garage doors are long-lasting, meaning they need to be replaced less often, reducing waste in the long term.
Wood Garage Doors
Wooden garage doors are another classic option, valued for their aesthetic appeal and natural look. However, their environmental footprint can be quite large. The production of wood involves deforestation, contributing to habitat destruction, and the overharvesting of trees can lead to soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Moreover, the chemicals used in treating wood for weatherproofing can be harmful to the environment. That said, some manufacturers use reclaimed wood or source timber from sustainable forests, which can help mitigate these impacts. Additionally, wooden garage doors are biodegradable, making them a more eco-friendly option when compared to steel at the end of their life.
Aluminum Garage Doors
Aluminum is another common material used for garage doors. It is lighter than steel and resistant to rust, making it an attractive option for areas with high humidity or coastal climates. The environmental impact of aluminum production is high, as it requires significant energy, but aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in the world. Many aluminum garage doors are made from recycled aluminum, reducing the demand for new raw materials and lowering the energy consumption involved in manufacturing. However, the recyclability of aluminum is not always guaranteed, and not all aluminum garage doors are made with recycled content.
Fiberglass Garage Doors
Fiberglass is a lightweight, durable material often used for garage doors. It is resistant to weather damage and requires little maintenance. However, fiberglass is made from synthetic materials that are not biodegradable and are challenging to recycle. The production of fiberglass is also energy-intensive, and the long-term environmental impact is concerning. On the plus side, fiberglass garage doors can be very durable and long-lasting, potentially reducing the need for replacements over time.
The Future of Eco-Friendly Garage Doors
As environmental concerns continue to grow, many companies are working to develop more sustainable garage door options. New materials, such as composite materials made from recycled plastic, offer an environmentally friendly alternative. These materials combine durability and recyclability while minimizing waste. Furthermore, advancements in energy-efficient designs, like insulated garage doors, can help reduce heating and cooling costs, leading to lower overall energy consumption.
When considering garage door installation or garage door repair in Davie, it’s important to think about the materials used and their long-term environmental impact. Making the switch to eco-friendly options, such as doors made from recycled materials or sustainable resources, can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint and supporting the transition to a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, the environmental impact of garage door materials varies widely, with each option offering unique advantages and challenges. By making informed choices, homeowners and businesses can help reduce the ecological footprint of their garage doors while still enjoying the durability and aesthetic appeal they need.
Pop's is a small corner Soda Shop. Complete with Pharmacy and a swingin' juke box. The owner, Pop, aka Mr. Oscar Blaski is an elderly man. Very kind, always smiling. Plenty of ice cream and hamburgers here. It's a favorite haunt for Nick and George. They've been coming here since they were kids. Carol notices Nick staring out the window. "Nicky, you alright? You look in the dumps " says Carol. Suddenly, George comes through the door. "That was fast " says Carol. "Lab was closed up, I'll just have to bloom them tomorrow". "Hey Nick get some chew, you don't look good buddy " George says. "I was just saying that "says Carol. " Say Nick you remember how we ended up here at Pop's? "After that baseball game?" "Same ol' story" says Nick. "Tell me, Georgie " says Carol. "Well Nick and I were in little league. One game we got into a tumble and scruff over a foul ball" George says. "I still say that ball was in." says Nick. George laughs. "The coach brought us here. We made good and chinned over ice cream. " We kept jawing, found out neither of us knew our fathers" My Ma said I had one but he ran out on us. She still calls him a bum" says George. "I can't remember what mine looks like." says Nick. George and Carol look back at Nick as he bites his grease stained fingernails.
"Something's off at the shop" Nick says............
Now I'm under That hood again, same Flivver." " That's odd, that truck, the blue Ford?" says Carol " I remember writing that receipt. "To tell you the truth that's not the only double I've written lately." "Before Nicky started working at the garage it happened a few times." says Carol. "You remember how many? says George. "Actually a lot. Just today Mr. Winthrop bought a coupe on the cheap. The owner of the coupe bought a high ticket two door Carol says. "Didn't look like he had the lettuce for it either" Carol says. "Then why am I working on fixing a dud, again" says Nick. " What gives? "I've gotta dope this out.". Sounds like there's too many ringers to me. Let's go take a slant" Nick says. "I'm in buddy" says George. "Wait for me! says Carol. You'll need the keys"! They rush out the door and hurry to the streetcar.
With the sun almost set, the three teens arrive and see the shop and office lights on. Following the sound of raised voices they moved closer. Inside the office was the owner, Larry Winthrop and Hal Davis the mechanic. Their voices were booming. " I ain't havin' it Larry" says Hal. English Village
3418-3450 Grove Avenue
Built, 1927
Architect, Bascom J. Rowlett
VDHR 127-0374
Tumblr media
June 2020
Housing ahead of its time.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 10, 1927
The sales prospectus of English Village citing "...the new lifestyle ... while enjoying all the amenities, including privacy of single house living ... with an atmosphere of social respectability..." lt reads like a contemporary advertisement for carefree condominium ownership, yet the ad is over fifty years old.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 10, 1927
Incorporated April 14, 1927, English Village was designed as a cooperative community both for economy and for efficiency while at the same time maintaining a gracious lifestyle. The Village by-laws, still in force, state that "it is the purpose and object of this corporation to maintain and operate the property in English Village on a mutual and cooperative basis.&. without any profits or other gains or remuneration to the corporation, excepting assessments made as hereinafter provided necessary for the upkeep and expense of maintaining the property and providing heat and hot water to the seventeen dwellings located in English Village."
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 10, 1927
This cooperative planned comity was a radical experiment in housing for Richmond as well as for the rest of the country since most of the multi-family housing constructed at the time were apartment complexes in the city or rowhouses in the suburbs.
While many different types of cooperatives in this country enlisted members at the beginning of the 20th century -- credit unions, agricultural co-ops, retail consumers, workers' productive, insurance and others -- cooperative home ownership was a fairly new concept in 1926.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 10, 1927
At that time, articles appearing in popular periodicals extolling the merits of cooperative apartment ownership, and in 1928, an article appeared in Arts and Decoration entitled, "Cooperatives: the New Way of Buying a Home." The reasons behind cooperative homeownership, the author said, were that they were "...cheaper, more desirable, more flexible in plan... owners realized a savings in rent . . . they had a voice in management." This philosophy had already been espoused by Davis Brothers a year before in their advertisements for English Village.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 10, 1927
Unlike most of this country's housing co-ops of the 1920s which were built for the working class by industry, philanthropists, or non-profit governmental agencies, English Village was built in the fashionable Grove Avenue neighborhood for the upwardly mobile middle class by private entrepreneurs. According to an article in the real estate section of the Richmond Times Dispatch dated January 23, 1927, English Village would have all the latest modern conveniences including: separate garages; electric refrigeration; community heating; a parked entrance-way as well as "a janitor and cook service on the cooperative plan.
Tumblr media
June 2020
Advertised by Davis Brothers as "English Architecture al; its best," the Village was designed by Rowlett, a lesser known Richmond architect, who was noted for a number of fine residences and apartment buildings in Richmond in the 1920s. Reminiscent of the Shelby Apartments of Kingsport, Tennessee, built in 1926, Rowlett's Tudor Revival mannerisms lent variety to the multi-unit complex.
Tumblr media
June 2020
Designed for economy, efficiency, and permanency of building materials without sacrificing aesthetics, the Villas is composed of seventeen attached units two-and-a-half stories high built of brick walls, a distinctive water table, buttressing, prominent gables, and half-timbering in some of the second-story gables. The overall appearance is that, of asymmetry yet the plan is symmetrical with each half being the mirror image of the other. The plan consists of a symmetrical main block and two wings extended forward at each end of the rectangular main block. The wings are asymmetrical but mirror images of each other.
Tumblr media
June 2020
The off-centered doorways are capped with 'Tudor-arched lintels made of cast concrete embellished with designs of lions heads, coats of arms, grape vines, and the diaper motif. Some of the door surrounds are quoinwork of cast cement made to look like stone. The Arts and Crafts philosophy is apparent in the treatment of the doorways.
Tumblr media
(The English Village)
The doors are board-and-batten with stained-glass windows and wrought-iron strap hinges and thumb latch door handles and knockers. Fenestration on the first and second floors consists of a variety of window shapes and sizes; round-headed windows with leaded stained glass, small narrow rectangular leaded stained-glass windows with label moldings of cast concrete, and metal casement windows set in groups of two's and three's.
Tumblr media
June 2020
The cornice in the second story is small and molded. The lines of the gray slate-covered hipped roof are broken by shed dormers, stepped gables, gable ends, some of which have jerkin heads, and large decorative chimney stacks. The focal point of the building is the main block which faces the central courtyard.
Tumblr media
(VDHR) — 1983 VDHR nomination photo
The horizontal lines of the main block are interrupted by the vertical lines of the prominent central gable with second-story half-timbering and the vertical thrusting of the chimney stacks flanking either side of the gable end. The one-bay entrance porch again reflects the Arts and Crafts era with its heavily turned wooden posts with brackets and carved acorns and slate roof. Except for this rather ornate porch, Rowlett gas somewhat restrained in the use of ornamentation, but rather used quality materials for color and texture.
Tumblr media
June 2020
The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond with a tapestry-like pattern in the gable peaks. Cast-cement recessed panels with molded coat of arms designs are also located in the top of the gables. The gutters and downspouts are made of copper. Other uses of ornamentation include a distinctive brick beveled water table which serves, visually, to tie the units together, and brick corbelling under the eaves on the gable ends.
Tumblr media
June 2020
The south, east, and west elevations fronting Grove Avenue present the formal side of the Villas, while the north, east, and west elevations facing the rear alley are more utilitarian and resemble the typical rear elevations of rowhouses in Richmond. The plain rectangular common brick walls of the first and second stories are laid in common bond.
Tumblr media
June 2020
Simple hoods with brackets shelter the rear doorways. Fenestration consists of 6/6 lights with double-hung sash. Each dwelling has its own private tiny rear patio or garden area enclosed by a picket fence. "Modern refrigeration" boxes are still conveniently located near the back kitchen doors. The furnace room and four-room apartment for the custodian is located on the northwest corner on the rear of the building facing the alley. Seventeen attached brick garages with metal shed roofs are located on the north side of the concrete paved alley.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday, July 19, 1927
The interior plan which varies slightly for each unit was designed for comfort, convenience, and efficiency and for a servantless lifestyle. One enters through an interior vestibule dimly lit by stained-glass windows. Tudor arched doorways lead from the living room to the dining room to a compact galley-type kitchen at the rear. An open stairway on one side of the living room leads to three bedrooms and a porcelain tiled bathroom upstairs. Some living rooms are equipped with corner fireplaces with cast cement Tudor styled mantels and terra cotta tiled hearths.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com)
The original mantels were left unpainted to resemble carved stone, however, most of the mantels have been painted over. The ceilings are low with coved ceilings in the hallways, living rooms and dining rooms. Party walls are constructed of cinder block with a stucco finish. The walls were originally painted a cream. The woodwork, including the two-paneled doors with glass door handles, door and window trim , stairway newel post, handrail and turned balusters, was originally stained a dark oak. The creamy walls and the lighter red oak floors were meant to contrast with the darker tones of the doors, windows, and trim.
The original landscaping plan consisted of fir, spruce, elm, and hemlock trees combined with ornamental shrubs and lined with terra cotta patios and walkways. A water fountain graced the central courtyard. The circular drive was paved with brick. A playground was located in the northeast corner of the lot behind the buildings. Brick walls enclosed the grounds with a gateway leading to the driveway.
In 1947, the original landscaping plan was altered by Charles Gillette, a Richmond landscape architect. The fountain was removed and replaced by the present flagpole. The driveway was paved with asphalt and the playground no longer exists.
The corporate structure and by-laws of English Village Corporation were much the same as that of Garden Homes Cooperative in Milwaukee, one of the first cooperatives in the country, built in the early 1920s. The homeowners in both cases bought shares in the corporation. Besides paying for stock, the homeowners also paid a rental sufficient to cover interest, taxes, insurance, depreciation, repairs and maintenance. But while the home ownership was collective in Milwaukee with no clear title to the property, English Village stockholders retained clear title to their individual properties similar to today s condominium ownership.
Since its beginning in 1927, the business of English Village Corporation has been transacted at an annual meeting, or special meeting; if needed, with duly-elected officers and a board of directors managing the property. Each stockholder is assessed one-seventeenth of the total expenses for the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds.
During the depression many of the early owners lost their homes through mortgage foreclosures. However, by 1934, the deeds indicate that all the dwellings were once again owned by families who resided there. The Robert L. Atwell family, original owners of one of the dwellings, managed to hold on to their property and still retain it to this day.
English Village Corporation no longer contains all of its restrictive covenants, but it does retain an important one in the original by-laws which has helped maintain the architectural integrity of the building. Homeowners are restricted from making any changes to the exterior of their individual homes which would constitute a departure from and in contrast to the original architectural plan and design of the village structure as a whole. English Village, a product of the era of community consciousness, functionalism, and the Garden Cities ideal, remains an excellent example of an early 20th-century planned cooperative community. A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and that goes double for English Village, still looking good at 93 years young. That’s also true of Architecture Richmond’s write up on this unique Richmond location, a worthy read.
