history doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes
Everyone wants Obi’s backstory, but do you know who we know even less about? Ryuu. How does a twelve year old boy living and working on his own in the royal palace of all places not mention his family or past even once? Anyway, I love my son, and you should too.
Thanks to @garrack for encouraging me to post this <3
On AO3 here
Summary: Ryuu hasn’t gotten nearly enough sleep when he shows up at the examination hall in the palace. There are whispers as he walks into the room, and he feels stares latch onto him as he takes a seat. It’s unpleasant, but all he knows is that if he passes he’ll be able to learn more about the plants that fascinate him so much.
Ryuu is eight years old when he first arrives in Clarines. He doesn’t really remember much of the journey, but he remembers how the forests stretched on for days and the rivers glittered in the sunlight. He wonders if he’ll have time to see what plants grow in the countryside, but his carriage doesn’t allow for many stops. He manages to venture out at night, when they stop to rest. He gathers a scroll of paper and a dip pen, a birthday gift from his grandparents, and settles in a meadow illuminated by the moonlight, scrawling sloppy letters onto the uneven surface as he leans in close to examine the flowers swaying in the breeze.
He hasn’t gotten nearly enough sleep when he shows up at the examination hall in the palace. There are whispers as he walks into the room, and he feels stares latch onto him as he takes a seat. It’s unpleasant, but all he knows is that if he passes he’ll be able to learn more about the plants that fascinate him so much. The head pharmacist introduces herself quickly and then outlines the practical exam. He perks up at the mention of the herb garden because he’s never been in one before, and the idea of seeing one makes him forget his discomfort.
The greenhouse is absolutely wonderful and filled with so many herbs that he almost thinks he’s dreaming. Every plant is thriving, boasting vibrant hues and fragrant smells, and for moment Ryuu is struck speechless. He has only ever observed plants in natural environments, taking frequent trips into the forest or to the lake back home. He’s never seen such a large variety of plants all in one place before. The canals are pristine, and the water is so clear that he can see the bottom.
He gets to work immediately, taking out his pen and starts an inventory of all the plants in the garden. He’s not even halfway through before a certain plant catches his eye, and he all but runs to it in his excitement. He reaches into the soil and breaks off a root, bringing it to his mouth to taste it. His eyes widen when a sweet flavor spreads on his tongue. The flowers have yet to bloom, but he knows that it is yura shigure. He takes in the placement of all the plants and the flow of water in the garden, and he knows what he must do.
Garack arrives three days later, utterly dumbfounded as she takes in the state of the greenhouse. There is water all over the floor and bags of soil tipped over, mixing into the puddles and forming a concoction of mud that has been tracked throughout the garden by a pair of child sized shoes. Crinkled papers with dirty fingerprints lie haphazardly in the few clean areas in the greenhouse, such as the dry patches on the floor, the corners of plant boxes, and is there something in that fern over there?
Underneath the one tree in the garden, Garack sees a boy curled up against a bag of soil. His face has streaks of dirt, as do his clothes, and she’s pretty sure there’s at least three different types of leaves in his hair. She walks over to him, careful to avoid the slippery puddles on the ground. He’s sleeping, she realizes, as his chest softly rises and falls as he lies there. She has heard of Ryuu, the prodigy who has been studying plants since he could walk. He’s so very young, and his sleeping face only emphasizes that. Before Garack realizes it, she has already crouched down and moved his hair out of his face.
No, no, what is she doing? She has never met the boy before, and he is an applicant, not friend or family. She stands, making as little noise as possible so he doesn’t wake up. Whatever he has done, it looks as if a storm has passed through the room. She reaches for the paper in the fern to find out what he has done to the place… and is met with one of the most unique formats of note taking she’s ever seen.
It takes a moment, but she manages to figure out that the page she’s holding is about the necessary environmental factors needed for the yura shigure plant to bloom. She looks up and immediately spots the brilliant red flower across the garden. The soil has recently been put in—the flower has been transferred from a different location. Garack walks over to the worst disaster zone in the garden, and she finds that many of the plants have also been moved. A sweeping glance of the room tells her that not all the plants were transferred—a section of the garden is lifeless, flowers and leaves drooping toward the floor.
A grin makes its way onto her face, and she holds back a laugh. The boy actually tried to replant everything! Based on the chaotic state of the garden and the exhausted child under the tree, he must have struggled to do as much as he could before finally falling asleep.
“Yatsufusa,” she calls. “Can you bring Ryuu back to his assigned room?”
“Yes, Chief,” he replies, gently gathering the small boy into his arms. The pair cautiously make their way back to the entrance, and Ryuu doesn’t even stir.
“Can you believe this?” she muses aloud. “He really tried to save all these plants.”
“Does he pass?” Yatsufusa asks, looking down at the boy with curiosity.
“He didn’t actually succeed, but he didn’t have to,” she replies.
Garack glances at Ryuu again, who doesn’t seem like he’ll wake up any time soon.
“Well,” she lets out a chuckle. “It’s really a formality. His reputation precedes him. He’ll definitely become a wonderful pharmacist.”
Ryuu wakes up in his room when the sun’s rays peek through the curtains. He feels kind of… dirty. He sits up and looks down at himself, and then comes to the realization that he desperately needs a shower. How did he get back anyway? Wasn’t he in the garden? Wait a minute… the exam!
Throwing his legs over the side of the bed, he is about to run back to the greenhouse when an envelope on his end table catches his eye. When he picks it up, he is surprised that it has some weight to it. He opens it, and there is a rectangular object of some sort inside. He takes it out, and a long cord attached to it follows. His eyes widen. It is an official identification tag for royal apprentice pharmacists. A note is also included in the envelope, so he takes that out to read it.
Dear Ryuu,
Congratulations on becoming a royal palace pharmacist. Please report to the Chief Pharmacist Garack Gazelt next week to begin your apprenticeship.
I look forward to working with you.
Chief Pharmacist of Clarines Garack Gazelt
Oh. He’s done it. Ryuu holds up the identification tag, staring at it in wonder. He’s a real pharmacist now. He feels warm and giddy and oh wow he’s actually done it! He can’t help but smile as the tag catches the light, reflecting a beautiful blue in the sun. He can’t wait to get started.
At least, he wants to get started, but there’s a mountain of papers on the Chief Pharmacist’s desk that is so high he can barely see her. He can hear the sound of a pen writing though. She doesn’t seem to have noticed his entrance, but his shyness starts to take over. She is the best pharmacist in all of Clarines. What if she doesn’t like him because he’s so young? It won’t be the first time it’s happened. He hesitates at first but eventually finds the courage to speak.
“Um, excuse me…” he manages to get out, trailing off. No response. He tries again.
“Excuse—excuse me, Chief Pharmacist!”
He hears the writing stop, and then a head pops out from behind the stack of paper. It’s so sudden that he jumps, startled.
“Ah, Ryuu!” Garack exclaims warmly. “Congratulations on passing the exam. Welcome to the royal pharmacy.”
The sight of only the chief’s head above stacks of paper is so bizarre that Ryuu forgets himself and stares. Garack tilts her head in confusion.
“Hm? What is it?”
“Ah, thank you for allowing me to work here,” he says, stumbling over his words a little. “And, um, thank you for the congratulations.”
Garack smiles and comes out from behind the desk, walking up to him. She holds out her hand.
“There’s no need for that,” she says. “You earned it.”
“Thank you,” he says again, shaking her hand lightly. Garack frowns.
“No, no, you have to do it more firmly,” she says, tightening her grip before he can pull away. “Like this!”
She shakes his hand almost vigorously, and Ryuu isn’t sure how to react. He settles with a look on confusion on his face.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he finally says. He then realizes that he is the only person here, besides the man wearing a bandana who was proctoring the exam.
“Um, am I the only one who passed?” he asks.
“You are,” Garack confirms. “It’s a difficult exam, so not many pass each year.”
That’s unexpected, but he’s glad that managed to pass the exam. He nods to show he’s listening.
“Normally, I’d assign you to a senior pharmacist, but all of them are currently stationed outside of the capital, so I’ll be in charge of you,” Garack says. “If I’m not available, then ask Yatsufusa here. He’ll be able to answer most of your questions.”
At this, Ryuu stares. Personal training from the chief herself? What an amazing opportunity!
“Please take care of me.”
“Great!” Garack says, clasping her hands together warmly. “Then please start familiarizing yourself with our plants and plant storage.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As he faces the wall of shelves, he feels excitement bubble up in his chest. The exam already feels a million years away, but the future is here and now and ready for him to take.

An Afternoon of Tea and Roses - a Snow White with the Red Hair fanfic
What's this??? StarlingChild writing fics for tiny-ass anime fandoms that no one gives a shit about???? More likely than you think lmao
Posted also: on ff.net and AO3 Words: 2,150 Rated: K Genre: FLUFF & Romance Setting: High School or Tea Shop AU. You pick.
~~~
Zen Wisteria, son of private Wisteria Academy’s Chairman, considered himself a rather “normal” kid, in spite of his family name.
Until today. His sixteenth birthday.
Once word got out (not from himself, his family, or his friends; such was the power of fangirl stalking), Zen’s unofficial legion of devoted fangirls was determined to give him their special gifts.
Zen tried to be gentle at first, telling the first unknown girl who dared to approach him that he did not willingly celebrate his birthday, and it would be wrong to accept any gift when he did not desire anything. The girl surprisingly took it in stride, but soon she was overtaken by several other eager girls, who seemed to interpret Zen’s rejection of the first girl’s gift as their chance.
Pressed from all sides, without Kiki or Mitsuhide nearby to help, Zen looked frantically around the hall, desperately seeking any assistance. Most of the boys looked disgusted or amused, and the few disinterested girls were rolling their eyes or walking past swiftly to their destinations.
Finally, Zen made eye contact with his best friend, Obi. He made a pleading tilt with his head, mouthing “help me!” as the girls swarmed him, all talking at once.
Obi grinned and saluted with two fingers. He reached in his pocket and threw something to the floor. Loud popping sounds and puffs of smoke did the trick; the girls shrieked and leaped back, with the couple closest to Zen clinging to his neck.
Freed from the majority of the mob, Zen easily untangled himself from his last assailants and bolted to the nearest window. A tree’s branch brushed against the sill outside. Perfect.
Ignoring the cries of “Zen! No!” Zen threw open the window and leaped to safety in the tree’s embrace.
He swung himself down safely to the ground (and hearing an eruption of squeals and shrieks up above that made him cringe: his escape only increased his Cool Points to those ladies), and bolted towards the greenhouses.
Thanks a million, Obi, he thought, keeping a mental note to find a way to pay him back one day.
He always felt safer among the flowers and plants. Perhaps it was because none of them had eyes that always seemed to stare at him, and they couldn’t talk back. Or maybe it was because the head of the gardens, Garack Gazelt, was not to be trifled with, and he knew that even the most determined fangirl could not get past her and her determination to ensure the safety of her precious plants.
“Good morning, Garack!” he called, as he ran further along past the rows and rows of plants.
“Good morning, Zen!” the gardener called. “Having trouble with the ladies again?”
“Ugh, you know it. And don’t worry, my classes are done for today.”
Garack laughed. “Rest assured, take as much time as you need. Just avoid my batch of strawberries; they’re in a very fragile state right now.”
Zen said he would and began to slow down at last. He rested his hand on a tree to catch his breath. Then, he looked up and started.
Just past the last garden rows stood a quaint little cottage. For a wild moment, Zen thought it was an actual home, but then he noticed the sign outside the door. Curious, he walked closer. It simply read “Tea & Herbs,” with what looked like an old signature beneath it but the paint had long ago smudged.
Practically brimming over with curiosity, Zen approached the front door and tentatively pushed it open. A small tingling sound of a bell announced his arrival.
“Back already, Garack?” a girl’s voice called out.
Zen opened his mouth to apologize and say he was not the head gardener, but his voice froze in his throat.
This tea shop was practically a mini greenhouse! Vines climbed the walls, potted plants sat on every empty table, herbs dangled from the ceiling. Zen felt like he just walked into a witch’s home. There stood another door towards the back, no doubt leading to a kitchen or storage area. Zen took a deep whiff and sighed happily; the place smelled heavenly. Despite the various kinds of foliage all together in the same place, they somehow complemented each other perfectly, giving out a tranquil and lovely aroma that seemed to clear his mind and soothe his body.
He cleared his throat and almost called out, but the female voice cut him off.
“Garack? Or is it Ryuu? Who’s out there?”
“Uh -- hello?”
Some stumbling noises and the back door opened, someone stepping into the main room.
Zen’s voice once again was lost.
She was a beautiful girl, about his age, with the reddest hair he had ever seen, cropped close in a boyish cut around her ears. Her large, expressive eyes were greener than an April morning after a week of showers. She wore a white dress with blue trimmings, her feet covered in simple and practical boots. She looked clean and presentable, but her hands showed signs of wear and tear, with several bandages about her fingers.
Her mouth opened in an “O” of surprise at seeing her unexpected guest.
“Oh! Umm, my goodness, I didn’t expect – I never really get customers, except the greenhouse folks... that is, uhh--” The girl paused abruptly in her stuttering, closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and opened her beautiful eyes again, now adopting a pleasant smile.
“Please, make yourself at home. I’ll fetch you some scones to enjoy while you browse our selection of teas,” she handed him a menu, “and please, feel free to trim off any flower or plant you like.”
She disappeared once more, leaving Zen stunned and more than a little pleased with himself for finding out about this place.
True to her word, she brought out a plate of delicious, warm scones and took his order of tea. Rather nervous, Zen pointed at the first one to catch his eye (an apple flavored white tea, with an infusion of herbs), later marveling at the fitting choice. The girl’s hair did rather remind him of an apple’s hue...
When his cup of tea arrived, the girl stood nervously close by. She seemed torn on whether to leave him be or keep him company. Zen immediately took action.
“Have a seat, please. You look like you could use the company.”
The girl’s face flushed almost as red as her hair.
“Um, if you don’t mind...”
“Of course not.” Zen smiled at her, hoping she wouldn’t feel shy.
She quickly made herself a cup of tea (rooibos with vanilla, she said), and sat down across from Zen at the one occupied table.
This table had an arrangement of roses sitting in a teapot at the center. Zen once again compared its vibrant color to the unique hair of his companion.
Suddenly remembering his manners, he cleared his throat. “Let’s start from the beginning: my name is Zen.”
“I’m Shirayuki.” She blushed again. “So, what brings you out here? Most students are unfamiliar with this place.”
“It was kinda an accident, I’ll admit...” Zen trailed off, unwilling to explain to this pretty girl that he was fleeing the ardor of the female population at the school, let alone to reveal his true identity.
Shirayuki offered a sympathetic smile, sipping her tea. She set the cup down, circling the rim with her finger. “Flowers are excellent companions.”
Zen blinked.
“I know it sounds mad, but hear me out: they do not judge you; they do not make any noise or messes, they don’t even require affectionate attention. They only need a little sunlight and water, and tending to them is rather therapeutic.”
She smiled again, this time a little sadly and touched one of the roses. Again, Zen was struck by the similarity of their beautiful shared color.
“You are a student at Wisteria, right?” he blurted out. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before...”
Shirayuki laughed nervously. “Yeah, well, I kinda stand out without my consent, so.... I mostly keep back here.” She tugged at her hair meaningfully.
Zen instantly sympathized. Red hair was rare in the country, and Wisteria Academy did not exactly have the most diverse student body. She would stand out like a sore thumb... not unlike himself.
“I think I understand,” he said sincerely, not daring to presume.
Shirayuki’s grin relieved him. “I imagine you would.... Zen Wisteria.”
“You knew who I was?”
“As far as I know, there is not a single student at Wisteria Academy named ‘Zen.’”
Heat flooded his face. “R-right...”
“But I like your name!” Shirayuki said hurriedly. “And-and not just because of your ... surname. I think ‘Zen’ suits you.”
For a moment, they stared at each other, then together looked away, blushing furiously.
“Well...” Zen ran his hand through his hair. “Thank you. For the compliment and for not jumping me.”
Shirayuki blinked. “Beg pardon?”
Zen sighed and explained the events that led him to the tea shop. Shirayuki looked horrified, a reaction Zen had not expected.
“No offense to those girls, I’m sure they mean well, but honestly, that’s ridiculous! Ogling at you like you’re an exhibit in a museum! Chasing you like wolves on the hunt! Touching and demanding and just being overall just – UGH!”
Shirayuki let out an indignant shriek, standing up and slamming her hands flat on the table. Zen clutched at his tea cup to prevent it from falling to the floor and smashing.
Shirayuki went on, livid, to Zen’s utter bemusement: “Honestly, didn’t their mothers teach them manners?! You don’t treat people like ... like things just because you find them interesting or something! And for such a shallow reason, too! I don’t know how you can stand it, Zen!”
Quite suddenly, she seemed to remember herself. Remembered that he was her customer, remembered that they had only just met, remembered it was not her issue to start with. Zen could see the inner workings of her realization as her eyes grew wide in horror. But he found himself grinning.
She’s adorable!
“I’m sorry! I get ahead of myself! I just can’t stand injustices, however small...” she trailed off embarrassedly.
“Don’t worry about it. Believe me, it’s greatly appreciated. I can’t stand being the center of attention, and I’m so glad that there’s at least one other person at this school besides my three closest friends who sees me as… well, a person.”
They grinned sheepishly at each other. Shirayuki, seeming too embarrassed to speak again, hurriedly sat back down and took a shaky sip from her tea, which had mercifully only spilt a little from her earlier rage.
“So,” Zen said in an effort to regain conversation, “tell me more about this place. Are you the only one who runs it? Who owns it?”
“Technically, the Academy ‘owns’ it, and it’s through Garack – er, Professor Gazelt – running the Botany classes and Gardening Club that keeps this place from being shut down…”
Shirayuki trailed off, a distinct melancholy tone to her voice.
Zen, catching on, said sympathetically: “I’m guessing you don’t get much business here?”
“Well, ‘business’ is too cold a word. This place is more like … the unofficial hideaway for the Gardening Club members, with our club’s funding keeping the Academy’s Board of Directors at bay. The only reason why it hasn’t fallen to complete disarray is because Ryuu and I love tending the plants here, and because I consider myself a connoisseur of ‘Tea & Herbs.’” Shirayuki grinned sheepishly. “You might have noticed that there are no prices on the menu. It’s based on club funding, and occasional charitable donations from loyal customers. Without them, I can get by all right – everything is grown and produced in the greenhouses, after all – but I cannot deny that the extra cash is useful for buying rarer spices, tea blends, and so on and so forth…”
“I see,” Zen said, downing the last of his tea, smiling serenely at Shirayuki’s gushing.
(He was already making mental reminders to frequently and anonymously “donate” considerable sums to Teas & Herbs.)
They continued chatting for the next few hours, barely noticing time slipping away until the sunshine pouring in from the windows had all but completely vanished.
“I shouldn’t keep you longer than necessary,” Shirayuki said, standing up, her cheeks pretty pink.
“No, no, I’m the one in your way!” Zen said hurriedly, mirroring her stance, feeling warmth in his own cheeks.
“Will – umm, will you stop by again, soon?” Shirayuki said shyly.
Zen smiled, a broad, genuine smile, his chest swelling like a balloon. “You can count on me.”
And as he left Tea & Herbs, the sun’s last rays dying the world in soft rues of orange and pink, a smell of roses lingered on Zen’s skin, just as his memory lingered on images of apple-red hair and bright green eyes over a steaming cup of tea.
AnS Fic Rec Bingo
A fic that got you involved in fandom: Drink Deep of Lethe by @sabraeal | T In short: it has everything I love about early Shirayuki, early Obi, and early Obiyuki. Two people, both on the run, meeting in the deep Wood and converging paths by pure chance. It’s such a fun read!! I first read this on Obiyuki Week 2016 and was just so inspired that I was like “man, I really want to write something for this event too” :D So that is how it got me involved in the fandom.
Made you laugh out loud: I Should’ve Met You Yesterday by @bubblesthemonsterartist | E First of all, I eat ‘Obi gets a support system kicking and screaming’ with a spoon. Second, and more specific to this bingo square, bb Aki is an agent of love and chaos and Obi has absolutely 0 game when it comes to Shirayuki. And it’s the cutest and funniest story!!! Things that made me laugh include: the entire chapter Obi and Aki meet Zen and Mitsuhide, “Here lies what was left of Obi’s game” scene, and Aki trying to get dada to kiss Shirayuki’s booboo, AND MUCH MORE.
Favourite trope reversal: An Earthly Knight by @claudeng80 | T I find fae stories really intriguing and interesting even though (or maybe even because) I know like, the bare minimum of background info. Like they’re just so cool and fun. ANYWAY, I loveddddd how even though Obi is Shirayuki’s guard, this fic is her trying to rescue him in a way only she can - with DETERMINATION and IMMENSE BRAVERY <3 A beautiful story.
Action-packed fight scene: The Moon, the Window, the Knife by @glitter-and-golden | G Over 2000 words and my breath was held the entire time. A super cool fic about Wistal castle being attacked by NINJAS which also means OBI BADASSERY :’D But also it’s not Obi if he doesn’t get hurt in the process and him and Shirayuki protecting each other, because we love that food. Delicious. 5 stars.
Gen fic: It’s a Difficult Conversation by @nebluus | T A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION IT WAS INDEED. For Ryuu, being barely a teen who has people he really looks up to, seeing those people hurt is rough. And for a healer, not being able to help them in the way he knows best is DOUBLEY ROUGH. But I just love that Shirayuki sits with him and explains this very hard stuff about trauma in the most compassionate and understanding way.
Canon divergent: i am become death by @bubblesthemonsterartist | M So in 2017 Bubbles and ISM decided to have an angst battle and the rest of us took a ton of collateral damage to the emotions like NYC at the end of an Avengers movie. In answering the question ‘what if Obi didn’t find Shirayuki in time during Tanbarun arc?’, Bubbles weaves this piece of Absolute Art and it’s just...amazing. Horrifies me in the best of ways.
Wept real tears: Nothing Was My Own (Before I Loved You) by @sabraeal | T Specifically, Making Good made me cry real tears. We love a good slow burn, especially that moment where one of them realises they’re in love with the other and just HOW important they are in their life. It’s beautiful and moving!! And also has fluffy AND funny Obiyuki moments that make me squeal. But also the entire WFB series is an AMAZING fic of everybody’s journey thru college and young adult lives and I think about it all the time.
FREE SPACE: The Most Versatile of Guards by @claudeng80 | T A favourite of mine!!!!! :DD So many fun and cool adventure times with herbwitch!Shirayuki and shapeshifter!Obi and I loveddd the Mihaya interludes. The entire world is just so creative and seeing all the characters as different beings is so much fun. And their romance makes me SQUEEEEEEE.
Fav fanmade OC: I gotta give this one to Aki from I Should’ve Met You Yesterday. Number one precious bb with the MOST personality and he’s so much fun to read.
First AnS fic you read: The Automation Heart by @infinitelystrangemachinex | T The first chapter ALREADY had me wrecked. In general AND for this ship. I am also due for a reread. But I remember reading all the chapters that were published then in a single night just being like “oh my god this is so good. MOAR PLS” *clicks next chapter*
Favourite minor character: Garack Gazelt, particularly in The road to Clarines is gravel (M) by @codango, (don’t go) making something out of nothing (T) by @sabraeal, and Dead Men Tell No Tales by @bubblesthemonsterartist (T) (the last which I need to go into the AO3 comments and yell about because OHHHH MY GOD). I always love seeing her. She’s badass and smart and amazing and every time I see her I go *heart eyes*
WIP: Damned by @ruleofexception | No rating ZOMBIES ARE SCARY BUT YOU KNOW WHAT’S ALSO SCARY??? BEING ALONE. AND HAVING YOUR FREEDOM TAKEN AWAY. But no really I love sooo many things about this fic, like the wonderful Found Family, tragic backstories and some amazing story arcs. I look forward to every time this updates.
Canon compliant: Knots by @krispy-kream | G ABSOLUTE FANDOM CLASSIC 10/10. I just love how it all starts as a game for him. Because why take it seriously when he can’t have her for real? AND THEN HE GOES OH SHIT, OH FUCK I’M IN TOO DEEP. And things just unfold wonderfully from there!!!!! Like it’s such a classic “Obi is wrecked and he is slowly losing it with how much he likes his Miss”.
One-shot: Life Eternal by @ruleofexception | No rating Devil!Obi and Angel!Shirayuki is just...THE MOST WONDERFUL OF CONCEPTS. And not only are they on opposite sides, working against each other to either make people’s lives better or worse, she becomes a literal devil’s GUARDIAN ANGEL. And that makes way for such an interesting story and I love its open end <3 It was a really fun fic!!
Rare pair: Cookies for Shikito (Shirayuki x Shikito) by @claudeng80 | G PLS THIS FIC IS SO FLUFFY <3 <3 <3 They’re such a cute ship. Just two absolute cinnamon buns spending time together while Shirayuki makes cookies and Shikito PROTECCS. They’re so fluttery and adorable!!!!!!! I love it!!!!!!!!
AU you took a chance on and now love: Sic Semper Monstrum by @sabraeal | T I simply do not know many Things, including common source materials for AUs. Including Pacific Rim, which I still haven’t watched (but need to, PROBABLY) but I. LOVE. THIS. AU. The importance that is placed on intimacy and emotional connection with the entire concept of drifting and also just like, life in general??? I thoroughly enjoy (as always) the exploration of everyone’s thoughts and backstories and relationships and also psychologist!Shirayuki <3
Pre-canon: ashes in the mouth, char the tongue by @infinitelystrangemachinex | T Both a pre-canon (childhood friends) and future fic!! The summary explains it better than I could: “Obi finally takes Shirayuki back to Tanbarun, but she gets more than she bargained for.” This fic ruined me (in a good way) and kicked my heart out of my chest and it rolled into a gutter (in a good way) and I almost missed my tram stop the first time I read it because I was so wrapped up in it. It was a RIDE.
Pen Pals, Chapter 1
Shirayuki is no stranger to letters. Once a month she sends a status report to Garack Gazelt, listing off the accomplishments of the period and answering her questions about Ryuu and Shidan. Every couple of months she writes to Raj Shenezard, answering his missives full of complaints and scraps of poetry. A few times a year, Kazuki sends a letter full of stories and exclamation points, crowned with a tiny postscript from her father, and she answers with reassurances and funny stories of her own.
And then, of course, there's Zen. She thinks of him often, but every time she sits down to put pen to paper, she doesn't know what to say. She's no poet like Raj, to spill out her feelings with words. She's no storyteller like Kazuki, to bring the days in Lyrias to life so he can share them with her. And the last thing he needs is more reports. Everything she writes sounds so small, so insignificant against his responsibilities at Wistal. So she answers his letters when they arrive, but every single one feels insufficient. And when, over time, she finds the space between letters has stretched by yet another week, it's with only a little shame that she feels relief.
So, naturally, she's in no hurry to take on yet another correspondent.
“Did you sign up yet?” Shirayuki pauses when Yuzuri’s voice interrupts her count. If she loses track of the clean dishes, she’ll have to start over again, but Yuzuri’s got that tone in her voice that promises mayhem if she’s ignored.
Best not to risk it. “Do you know how many letters I get every month?” She should probably write to Zen again, if she were honest with herself. She hasn’t heard from him recently, but it’s been a couple of weeks. It’s probably time.
“But this is different,” Yuzuri insists. “It’s for morale, and to get the guards more invested in the educational workings of Lyrias.” She sends the ladder rolling again, nearly catching Shirayuki’s fingers. “And you’ve seen the men Obi’s training. They’re handsome! You really need to.”
“Is she on your case too, miss?” Obi’s voice precedes his footfalls, and Shirayuki gives up the count as a lost cause. She just needs to get through this conversation so she can get back to work. Yuzuri winds up a breath, but Obi cuts her off. “I signed up yesterday, so you don’t need to hassle me any further.”
Yuzuri hops off the ladder, sending it drifting back the other way. “Good, then help me convince her. If we gang up on her she can’t possibly say no.”
Shirayuki makes the mistake of looking up at her friends. Side by side they look pathetically needy, Yuzuri’s lips twitching but Obi a far better actor. He actually looks serious. “Fine,” she says. Nothing else is going to get them out of her hair, and they do have her outnumbered. What’s one more letter every now and then? “I’ll do it. You can put me on the list.”
Yuzuri hops in place, tugging on Obi’s sleeve. “You’re not going to regret it! Good-looking guardsman pen pals, here we come!” Obi snorts but doesn’t add anything, just peels her off his arm. “Come on, Obi, we need to go convince Ryuu next.”
Shirayuki meets Obi’s eyes before Yuzuri pulls him off, and he winks. He’s getting Yuzuri out of her hair so she can work. He’s the best. “Thank you,” she mouths silently, and he nods before allowing himself to be towed away.
“I don’t think Ryuu needs any more handsome guardsmen, he’s got me,” is the last Shirayuki hears before the door swings shut behind them.
***
Dear Mysterious Scholar,
Hi. I’ve never had a pen pal before. Particularly not one I know nothing about. What do we write to each other?
***
Dear unknown guard,
I’ve never had an anonymous pen pal before either. Growing up, the only people I knew who weren’t within a short walk couldn’t receive mail anyway. I have a few correspondents and I write plenty of letters for professional reasons, but I’m not used to writing about anything but work.
I doubt that’s what you’re interested in, particularly if we’re intending to stay anonymous. So maybe we talk about Lyrias? Have you been here long?
***
The sun is warm through the windows, unusually clear and bright in Lyrias’ brief summer, when the pharmacy crew meets for a picnic lunch. Ryuu unpacks pies from the market while Izuru ladles up her special bean salad and Shirayuki pours out fruit juice for everyone. The students are deep in the final preparations for exams and the chemistry faculty hasn’t exploded anything important lately, so of course the topic of conversation turns to pen pals.
“Mine seems nice,” says Suzu.
Yuzuri’s been disappointed since day one. “Mine’s kind of dim, and I don’t get to see him so I don’t know whether he makes up for it by being hot. So far it’s all a bust.”
Ryuu stuffs his mouth with salad, eyes fixed on his plate. He never did sign up.
“How about yours? What do you think?” Yuzuri leans into Shirayuki’s space, dropping crumbs with abandon and forcing her back onto her hands to maintain any kind of distance.
“Um, we mostly talk about food.” Shirayuki shakes her hand pie in Yuzuri’s face, which buys her a few more inches of space. “We like a lot of the same places, like that noodle shop Obi’s always dragging us to.”
“The one with the spicy seaweed soup?” Yuzuri makes a face.
“It’s his favorite.” Shirayuki joins her in a shudder at the memory of the lingering seaweed smell and the way her tongue had burned. Obi just laughed and laughed, then ordered a second bowl. “So I know he can’t have much in the way of taste buds, but aside from that he seems nice.”
“If nice is the best you have to say, you’re not taking advantage of the opportunity.” Yuzuri changes her angle of attack, scooting around to lean against Shirayuki’s side. “You have a secret man at your disposal! Don’t you have lingering questions you’ve always wanted answers to?”
“About being a guard? Obi tells me more than I ever needed to know, I don’t have anything I need to ask anyone else.”
“No, about being a man! Is Obi going to explain to you what having a boner feels like?”
Shirayuki shakes her head, warmth rising in her face at the very image of asking that question. He’d probably answer it, to be perfectly honest. “It never occurred to me to wonder about that.”
Yuzuri slings an arm around her shoulder. “Fine, if you just want to play restaurant critic with yours, that’s up to you. Just remember you could do more.”
***
Dear Unknown Guard,
It is, as always, a pleasure to hear from you. I’ve been so busy, the spring weather giving me so many tasks to catch up on, that I have hardly had a moment to sit down, let alone put pen to paper. You would hear about it at length if I were free to tell you about my profession, but so long as we are not discussing that, you are safe from the level of detail I usually regale my friends with.
But suffice it to say that I am thrilled at the turn of seasons. The longer days raise my spirits and the warmth means I can finally feel my fingers again while I’m working. What is your favorite thing about spring?
***
Dear Mysterious Scholar,
Spring is not as popular among the guards as you might think. The thaw is nice, and I do appreciate the return of feeling in my fingers, but the mud is something else. You would not believe how much my boots weigh at the end of a patrol.
Also I miss winter when it’s not here. I like the patterns the ice makes on the windows. I like the flump sound snow makes sliding off the roof and landing in the courtyard. And I like the way everyone is so warm and friendly indoors. By the time we reach spring, everyone’s getting tired of each other and the fights start. Even hot cider isn’t enough to make people happy anymore.
I’ve never heard someone talk so much about how busy they are without a single complaint. Even my most workaholic friends have things that bother them. I will have to trust that you’re just not sharing the complaints with me. In return, I’m going to use my secret identity to nag.
Haven’t you done any fun things lately? Swum naked in a hot spring? Taken a lover for a balmy spring walk under the stars? Please don’t tell me that the only reason spring excites you is how much more work you can get done.
***
Shirayuki has to be glad Obi isn’t there to see her blush. Embarrassed by a piece of paper, she’d never live it down. Whoever her pen pal is, he has a much more adventurous sense of fun than she does. Her own favorite activities are more along the lines of baking- she looks over at her tiny kitchenette. There’s dust on the teapot, and a spiderweb stretches across the cabinet door. Clearly it’s been longer than she thought. She should really clean that up.
She went to a festival with the other pharmacists, not that long ago- no, she remembers. That was the first day of summer. More than half a year back. The last time she went riding with Obi was a few months ago, the one and only time Izuru talked her into a game of tennis even longer. The last time she broke her daily routine was a visit to the outpost to deliver bandages.
She is boring. She can’t argue with that, even with herself.
***
She expects that to be the end of the topic, just one more adjective to add to her self-description and move on with her life. She has fun. She has plenty of fun. She just . . . does it all at work. If she can’t talk about greenhouses and seed priming, Ryuu’s diagrams and stockroom management and treasures in the library, she doesn’t have much to talk about. But unexpectedly she can’t put it behind her. It nags at her to know her pen pal would call her boring. That, in turn, makes her worry that maybe he's not the only one. Would Yuzuri call her boring? Does Suzu?
Would Obi? Somehow that’s the worst of all, the thought that even though he’s so constantly at her side, he might secretly be bored.
So maybe, instead, she can do something about it. “What do Lyrias residents do?”
Yuzuri stares at her like she’s asked something unreasonable, something incomprehensible. “Freeze? Research? Flirt with the guards? You’ve been here a year, you know what goes on here just as well as I do. Why?”
There’s no turning back now. “I just thought- Maybe I don’t get out of the lab enough.”
Yuzuri startles into motion, almost spilling her coffee as she grabs at Shirayuki’s sleeve. “Sorry! I just- I didn’t expect that from you.” She grins as surprise gives way to excitement, and Shirayuki already regrets asking the question. “Come out tonight, and we can talk about it.”
“Out?” Yuzuri’s grin widens, nearly feral, and Shirayuki regrets it even more. But maybe Obi can come, help rein in Yuzuri’s enthusiasm.
She’s kidding herself. Obi would be first in line for whatever Yuzuri has in mind. She takes a deep breath as Yuzuri skips off. Fun. She’ll be more fun. It’ll all be- fun.
Chapters: 4/4 Fandom: 赤髪の白雪姫 | Akagami no Shirayukihime Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Obi/Shirayuki (Akagami no Shirayukihime) Characters: Obi (Akagami no Shirayukihime), Shirayuki (Akagami no Shirayukihime), Garack Gazelt, Yuzuri (Akagami no Shirayukihime) Additional Tags: Undercover as a Couple, Sharing a Bed, Alternate Universe - Leverage Fusion, Spies & Secret Agents, First Meetings, Short One Shot, Co-workers, No Smut Summary:
Yuzuri squeezed her burrito so hard that salsa verde dripped onto the table. “You kissed?”
Obi closed his eyes, wondering if he maybe should have left that little detail out. But how could he? It wasn’t like he could trust Garack to pick up on that part of the story. One detail among many, all in the line of an efficient cover for a successful mission. Suzu would have made it sound dirtier than it was. And Zen would have just been appalled. Obi needed someone to…spill tea with.
“I don’t think you could really even say that.” He stirred the ice in his soda, going for nonchalance. He was very good at it. “We kissed would imply that she kissed back.”
----- Leverage AU! Shirayuki is the newbie with the science degree hired on by a team of undercover operatives, who may or may not be doing anything legal. Her first mission comes with a roommate.
