Reverend Sun Myung Moon, achieve notoriety when he announced last year in full page newspaper advertisements across the United States that President Nixon had been put into office by God and could be removed only by His will. Sun Myung Moon’s National Prayer and Fast Committee stuck by Nixon to the bitter end. (Thus did Moon inevitably meet Rabbi Korff, who then obligingly spoke before a Moon-affiliated organization on “The Fact of Communism and America’s Future.”10



The Reverend Moon is a new phenomenon in America, but not in Asia where his following now totals nearly a million people, concentrated in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Moon found his calling back in 1936 when Jesus Christ approached him on a mountainside and asked him to devote himself to God’s service as an evangelist. Moon waited until 1954, however, before organizing a new world religion, the Genri Undo, or Unification Church, formerly called the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. (Detractors claim he got off to a slow start because of three arrests for sexual offenses. [1946, 1948 and 1955]) 11



Despite his wide following in Asia, and his whirlwind American tour last year, Moon has not attracted a wide following in the United States, where he can claim only about 25,000 supporters. Now that he can no longer lead the campaign to save President Nixon, Sun Myung Moon has fallen back on more traditional approaches. Recently he spent $350,000 on radio, TV, and other advertising to promote a major evangelical rally at Madison Square Garden to stimulate new support in the East. The event was held September 18 and attracted a large crowd of curious onlookers, hostile fundamentalists, leftist demonstrators, policemen, and atheists.12



Once described as a “Korean-style Elmer Gantry” but preferring the title, “God’s Hope for America,” the Reverend Moon preaches about the many dangers of communism along with his personal interpretations of the Bible. One Japanese source describes his movement as “less a religion than an anti-communist front group.” Rabbi Mark Tannenbaum of the American Jewish Committee observes that “Moon seems to be exploiting the emotional power of religion in order to indoctrinate his anti-communist ideology. The tragedy is that so many young people respond to this emotional appeal.” And he has predictably drawn fire from concerned clergymen, in the words of one, for his “seemingly cozy relationships with the dictatorial Park Chung Hee regime in South Korea.” In reply to these charges a Moon spokesman insists, “Many religions acknowledge the threat of Communism.”13



Sun Myung Moon can afford to lavishly finance his propaganda activities. Time estimated his personal fortune at $15 million, derived from investments in a tea company, titanium mines, retreat ranches, pharmaceutical firms, and shot gun manufacturers. Recently his Unification Church purchased several estates and an old seminary in New York for about $3 million. The question remains: is this vast international effort just a personal undertaking?14



Moon and his close associates are predictably silent, but disturbing evidence is emerging of his church’s close ties to anti-communist political organizations with less spiritual ends.



For example, Moon’s closest associate and English interpreter, Colonel Bo Hi Pak (“God’s Colonel”), formerly a Korean military attaché, has strong links to both Korean intelligence and the American CIA. He heads the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation (KCFF) which operates “Radio Free Asia,” possibly an outgrowth of a project by the American organization, Committee for a Free Asia (now the Asia Foundation), funded by the CIA. KCFF also conducts propaganda operations in Vietnam. Its legal counsel is none other than Robert Amory, Jr., former deputy director of the CIA. In 1962 Amory almost became head of the Asia Foundation (he was turned down to avoid blowing the CIA cover); now he is a law partner in Corcoran, Roley, Youngman & Rowe, a firm which has long handled the legal work for CIA proprietaries.15



The possibility of CIA involvement with a right-wing movement now entering the United States is frightening enough. But just as troubling are the close financial ties of Moon’s church to the world of wealthy neo-fascist Japanese capitalists, who seek not only a rollback of Communism but a new “Greater Asia” under the Emperor, based on the integration of Korea and Formosa into the Japanese orbit. In Japan, the chief financial backer and organizer of the Genri Undo is Sasagawa Ryoichi, the 75 year old former Class A war criminal. Back in 1931, with the notorious Kodama Yoshio, he formed a chauvinist patriotic party and intelligence organization that siphoned off enormous wealth from China during the Japanese occupation and ultimately provided much of the postwar financial backing for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. In 1939 he set in motion the negotiations leading to the Tripartite Pact between Japan, Germany, and Italy; three years later he was elected to the Diet on an ultranationalist platform of southward expansion. His stint in the Sagumo Prison after World War II for suspected war crimes set back his career only a short while, for he and fellow inmates like Kodama Yoshio and former Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke used their influence and time to plan the resurrection of the postwar Japanese Right.16



Both Sasagawa and Kodama still exercise enormous influence in Japan, and are described as “kuromaku” – powers behind the throne. The New York Times description of Kodama applies identically to Sasagawa: “Yoshio Kodama is among the most powerful men in Japan. He was instrumental in founding the nation’s governing party, he has had a hand in naming several Premiers, he has settled dozens of disputes among top businessmen. He also commands the allegiance of Japan’s ultra-right wing and has strong influence over the yakuza, or gangsters, of the underworld here.”17 Both are dedicated to restoring the power of the Emperor and crushing opposition to the Right.



Sasagawa, as president of the Japan-Indonesia Association and Japan-Philippine Association, both reminiscent of the prewar imperialist South Seas Association, has helped to spearhead the southward Japanese commercial advance in Asia. He funded the anti-Sukarno forces which organized the Indonesian coup d’état of September 30, 1965; he likewise supported the Lon Nol faction which overthrew King Sihanouk in Cambodia in 1970, and arranged for Japanese economic aid to prop up the new government. Currently he is active in strengthening Japanese ties with the strategic Arabian peninsula, through his Japan-Oman Association. Most significantly, Sasagawa has long been a leading light in the Asian Peoples’ Anti-Communist League, and was behind the recent organization of the World Anti-Communist League. With his vast fortune acquired from shipbuilding, gambling, and organized crime, Sasagawa not only influences the Japanese government but acts as a powerful force in all of “Greater Asia.” His support of Moon’s Unification Church is thus just one of many elements in the constellation of interlocking activities surrounding the Japanese, Asian, and world right-wing movements which still thrive in many forms.

BABBITT STEW

Closing this Sunday, November 3, in Washington, D.C. is Babbitt, Joe DiPietro's stage adaptation of the Sinclair Lewis novel.

None other than Matthew Broderick plays the title role in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production, which I was lucky enough to see a couple of weeks ago when I was in D.C.

Strange to think that Ferris Bueller is old enough to play George Babbitt. We might tend to picture the role as the province of actors like Guy Kibbee, who played it in a 1934 movie version, or the grinning, wolfishly genial Edward Andrews, who played the character...

...in the 1960 movie version of Elmer Gantry.

But time marches inexorably on, and carries even an antic high school hustler like Ferris into the realms of complacent bourgeois middle age. And Broderick, who was born five days before I was in 1962, makes the role his own with a sort of dreamy, disassociated voice, as if he's halfheartedly playing at being an adult.

Even though it's in the third person, the book depends so much on describing its hero's sometimes barely conscious internal narratives that I wondered how it could really make the transition to the stage. DiPietro was way ahead of me. He locates his play in a library--the lovely, pristine set is by Walt Spangler--where a variety of attractive actors in contemporary clothes, in a variety of ages and races, are browsing.

The cast eventually starts reading aloud from Babbitt. Then a return cart is pushed onstage, with a large object on top, under a sheet. Said object turns out to be Broderick as we first see George Babbitt, rising from bed in the morning, brushing his teeth, having his breakfast. As George's day progresses, the readers, or "storytellers," assume the other roles. The device ingeniously allows for a diverse cast, and it allows them not only to narrate but sometimes to comment, omnisciently and often ironically, on the action. 

I was very keen to see this show, as I've been fascinated by all things Babbitt in recent years. In the early 2020s, I noticed an old Signet Classics edition of the book...

...in one of those little take-one leave-one libraries in an Italian ice place my family and I frequent, and reflected that I had never read the celebrated yarn, even though I love Lewis, and like so many people was astounded at the terrifying prescience and relevance of his 1935 It Can't Happen Here.

So I picked Babbitt up. A year or so later, I read it.

Even those who have never read Babbitt may have some idea of what it's about. The book was a sensation when it first came out in 1922, to the extent that the title character's name became a byword for a person of George's type, and his sort of behavior became known as "babbittry." 1945's Ziegfeld Follies even includes a duet between Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly to a song by George and Ira Gershwin called "The Babbitt and the Bromide," in which two gents exchange the same mindless pleasantries in all of their meetings, separated by decades, the only variety being costumes and dance styles.

The book itself, however, is the chronicle of two years in the life of George Babbitt, a real estate man and loyal Republican, Presbyterian and civic booster in the midwestern city of "Zenith." A husband and father, George is a happy consumer--proud to own "the best of the nationally advertised brands"--and an unquestioning social conservative and conformist.

Lewis follows him in painstaking detail as he goes through his days, exchanging commonplaces with colleagues and lecturing his son, venturing into public speaking and local politics, throwing parties angled at social climbing and going on camping trips and business trips. A shocking crime committed by his best friend shakes him up; he has an affair and eventually even flirts with socialism, but he never really grows much as a person. 

What an extraordinary work. I had a funky reaction to it, though; I'm guessing I can't be the only person who ever felt this way about it. I can't think of one episode in the book that didn't ring true, and still relevant, to me. It's amazing and appalling, for instance, when you read the scene of the racist talk between Babbitt and the guys in the smoking-car and you realize that you could set the same scene today, one hundred fucking years later, between a bunch of awful old white guys talking among themselves, and you wouldn't have to change a word. (This scene is omitted from the play, by the way.)

But as to the general method that Lewis uses to observe his hero, I had to wonder whether, if you followed anybody around--certainly including and maybe especially me--on our daily routines and our little adventures, and accurately reported our nattering internal monologues, you wouldn't get largely the same results: the same platitudes and evasions and self-justifications. Sure, the political and social values would shift a bit, but using the banality of Babbitt's inner life as Exhibit A in your indictment of his specific values seems specious to me. It had the odd effect of making me feel a little protective of old Georgie against the snarky God's-eye-view narration with which Lewis describes him. Or is it possible that was the intention? In any case, to paraphrase Flaubert, "Georges Babbitte; c'est moi."

The stage version had some of the same effect on me; listening to a D.C. audience chuckle condescendingly at George's hypocrisies, I had to wonder how many of us, if any, saw ourselves up there, at least a little bit.

By the way, I was astounded by another detail about the book's influence. Apparently J.R.R. Tolkien, of all freaking people, was among its admirers; he claimed that the word "Hobbit" derived from "Babbitt" because "Babbitt has the same bourgeois smugness that hobbits do. His world is the same limited place." I'd love to see a sequel to Lewis in which Babbitt has to infiltrate a dragon's lair.

But the Stop Oil folks got five years for even just talking about a peaceful protest involving climbing a damn gantry.

Basically, we've got enough bullshit going on already, with these far-right fuckbakes and the fuckers in the courts letting people off with a few months of jail for aggravated assault when "conspiring to protest" gets you years in jail. We don't need this waste of skin making shit worse.

And he has the fucking temerity to sue a whole bunch of companies for not advertising with him, like he can somehow force companies to buy advertising space on former-Twitter because they're "boycotting him unfairly" or some shit. If he wants advertisers to actually stick around his stupid vanity project? Maybe he should stop stirring shit in a country he doesn't even live in by making inflammatory comments and giving other people's lies legitimacy by retweeting them.

Bon Dia!!

Our entire group has arrived as of 9:30AM. Annie, however, is not feeling well although she is on antibiotics. Figures crossed she will be feeling better soon. Each of the 16 of us are in different stages of time change. Mark and I are probably the better off couple in the group - but then we did arrive 2 full days ago. We still feel the need for a nap - but we are sleeping during the hours one would expect to sleep. Time change is a tough thing.

We opted to return to the Hop-on Hop off bus today since we had a 48 hour pass. Today we hopped off. The weather is overcast and promising rain - but we missed it completely.

Here are some new discoveries: The 25th of April Bridge -(Portuguese Independence day from the Salazar Regime.). It may remind you of another bridge you may have seen....

The Golden Gate Bridge built in the 1930s. The same company built both bridges but the bridge in Lisboa was build in the 1960s. The design is the same and the color is the same - so I guess they used the "don't mess with success" model. The bridge in Lisboa was completed in 1966 and was named the Salazar Bridge - but after the bloodless revolution that ousted Salazar in 1974 the bridge was renamed.

I was closer to the statue in Rio de Janiero in 2020 - but I couldn't help but notice the similarities. Here is the look at the Brazilian statue from afar.

Anyone see the similarities here? The statue in  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was completed in 1931 and the Lisboa statue was complete in 1963 - but the Portuguese are completely honest about the fact that their statue was "inspired" by the statue in Brazil. I will say the bases are very different...

The east side of the Tagus River was at one time an industrial area - but has now been abandoned and looks pretty sad.

BUT - the area is slowly but surely coming back. A small restaurant advertising the "best sunsets in Portugal" has grown into a LARGE restaurant and if you want to eat there you need to make a reservation months in advance. This is has awakened many small businesses to try the east side and things are changing. We talked to a few people who suggest that in the next five years this will be a hopping area. I hope so.

Another area we explored today - during a hop-off - was the beautiful gorge in downtown Lisboa. It was hard to get a photo that demonstrated this topography but here they are...

Because there are so many different "levels" to Lisboa there a many methos to help move the people between levels. One is an elevator.

Cool huh? And several funiculars. The one below is very near our hotel. There are also just plain ol' steps - lots and lots of steps...

We opted to hop off and have lunch on the river. It was nice.

The River was alive with sailboats and schooners. Just looking at the lines and riggings on these boats did me in!

We also went by an industrial area filled with massive gantry cranes.

This gave "walking to work" a whole new meaning. Look that the steps the gantry operators must climb to begin their day. OMG!!!

We had a leisurely day enjoying a small part of beautiful Lisboa. We got back to the hotel in time to get a nap before we met our leader, Carolina, and our whole group for a welcome drink - Port Wine. It was so fun to see so many of our friends again. I loved it!

Carolina suggested a restaurant that offered a local speciality: Mammoth meat sandwiches (many varieties) topped with cheese and egg and a special gravy. It was a big hit - UNLESS you have gluten issue. But I had cod - another Portuguese favorite!

Tomorrow we officially begin our tour. Let the the learning begin!!!

Do we have any idea what the full body of the Permian Basin Superorganism looks like, or have scientists only observed the part of it that lies directly beneath Mystery Flesh Pit National Park?

Broadly speaking, yes, Geobiologists and Venteriobiologists have reached a general understanding that the Permian Basin Superorganism exhibits a basic pentadecagonal symmetry, though this should not be taken to mean that the Mystery Flesh Pit is simply a “Fifteen-legged starfish”. While it is symmetrical in plan, it's vertical composition is far less well understood and still remains a matter of staunch controversy.

Each individual's reason for returning to the pit will always be known only to them, but it has been widely understood in the decade plus since that many of these individuals attempted return to the orifice out of a sense of obligation to help loved ones who still remained within the park. Since it's publication, the official 2007 report has been criticized for it's over-reliance on technical explanation in contrast to more subjective, common-sense “folk wisdom” regarding certain elements such as the “inexplicable” return of these individuals to the entry orifice following the disaster.

James Jackson tragically died during the winter of 2006 at age 58 due to a collision with a drunk driver. Though he never married, and is survived by no living relatives, the Philanthropic and Activist-driven non-profit he began, the Jackson Foundation, still continues it's mission to this day.

The Project Touchstone expedition, which aimed to plot a horizontal navigable course from the main Entry Orifice to an extremity of the Superorganism, discovered an organ at the furthest extremity of their route that was determined to be analogous to an optical sensory organ or eye. This “eye”, determined to be one of many thousands along a band of the Superorganism's upper mantle, was measured to be approx. 1.2km in diameter, with multiple optic nerve connections, a retinal region many times larger than a regulation football field, and a highly evolved lens configuration comprising over two dozen discrete lens and filter elements. This large “eye” organ, as well as the other thousands of identical organs, appeared to be generally retracted into an inner carapace lining which separated these organs from the direct rock face of the surrounding geological strata.

The longest known instance that I was able to find of an individual surviving in the pit involved one of the original 38 individuals who returned to the entry orifice immediately following the 2007 disaster. The individual (whose name has not been made public) was a 41-year old male originally assigned within trauma group “A”. While this information has not been verified by either the NPS, the DoI, or the PBRCC, I have strong reason to believe that this “missing” individual was recovered in 2019 by PBRCC teams within the pit. The individual, originally presumed dead, was discovered by a surveying team. The man was naked and had sustained a tremendous amount of physical and genetic abuse, widly screaming at the sight of the surveyor's worklights. The individual, in a frenzied and panicked state, latched onto the metal frame of a work vehicle with such force that his arms and legs became severely bruised with risk of internal bleeding. After being brought to the surface, still maintaining a death-grip on the vehicle, the man was placed under intensive medical care to repair the injures and deformities he sustained during his 12 years within the pit. I know that he was given a robust regimen of physical and emotional therapy, but I do not know if he was/is rehabilitated to the degree where he would be willing to answer any of my emails regarding his time in the raw pit fleshscape. Only time will tell.

Because of the now-concentrated collection of horns, however, a persistant hole in this tissue sac survives to this day. This tear in the tissue lining, combined with the still rhythmic suffering of this animal collective, was known to park visitors as the “Peeking Druid” geobiological formation.

To my knowledge, no professionally-organized sporting events (besides the aforementioned off-road rally) took place within the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park. However, victory celebrations of all types were common. The resorts and facilities found within the park were of a world-class caliber and while a difficult sell at first blush, were famously exalted by guests who had actually stayed within the Interpit resort.

It is a common misconception that, due to the nature of the Amniotic Thermal Springs and their effects, there must have been a surplus of children conceived within the Mystery Flesh Pit. As soon as the flag drops at Monza the crowds rush towards the pit lane. Many of them bring wire cutters to open up huge holes in the safety fences as they charge over the track. Their main quest, of course, is to get as close as possible to their beloved scarlet cars, and obtain anything they can find as a souvenir. But in a country so passionate about Formula One it isn’t only Ferrari that has to worry about post-race security. Over the years teams have lost thousands of pounds worth of equipment: TV monitors; air-guns; pit stop jacks; wheel nuts; wheels and radios. Even entire pit stop gantries have all disappeared.

The very second the winner crosses the line it is vital to get everything inside the garage as quickly as possible, and get the doors firmly closed. The fans at Monza cram themselves against the garages, banging on the doors and shouting in sheer exuberance at being within touching distance of the otherwise incredibly elusive world of Grand Prix racing.

In the rush to get everything and everyone safely inside before the hoards descend, team personnel occasionally get left behind and become trapped on the outside. If that happens to anyone the best thing they can do is slide their FOCA Identification pass underneath the nearest garage door to where they are, irrespective of which team they belong to, and hope the mechanics will see it and lift the door just enough to get them inside. While they attempt to scramble through the gap the mechanics inside will try and keep the thousands of excited fans on the outside.

We managed to escape fairly lightly this year. We only lost one piece of equipment. Mick’s ‘BRAKES ON’ board must now be an unusual conversation piece in a house somewhere in Italy. In the rush to get everything in the garage the board had been left behind. It had survived the intense heat of the Hockenheim fire with only minor burns, but it had stood no chance whatsoever against a swarm of desperate souvenir hunters.
