Karwa Chauth 2020: Significance of Vrat and The Myth of The Hindu Festival
According to Hindu Mythology, Karva Chauth pooja is observed across the nation in the month of Karthik (Hindu calendar). On the fourth day of the Karthik month, Hindu married women pray for their husband’s long life and seek blessings from God. The married women observe fast on this auspicious day by offering Karva Chauth pooja. Adding that, they also offer food to God, which is considered as a part of Karva Chauth pooja. It is believed that Karva Chauth Vrat strengthens the husband-wife relationship and blesses them with a long and healthy life.
Over the years, however, the festival of Karwa Chauth has become more than just fasting, here are Five Brilliant Ways People Celebrate Karwa Chauth across the country.
In this blog, we will talk about the Karva Chauth pooja and its importance. But before that, let us find out how married women observe Karwa Chauth fast? The women keep this fast without having a single drop of water. Indian brides wear a traditional outfit and apply mehendi on their hands to perform the Karwa Chauth Vrat. In Hindu mythology, women can break the fast only after sighting the moon in the sky. Following the prayers, the couple exchanges the sweets to themselves and ends the fast.
The festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated across the nation, mainly in Northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. During this festival, women also worship Lord Shiva and Lord Parvati to seek longevity of their partner.
Karva Chauth 2020 - Pooja, Date and time
This year Karva Chauth will be observed on the 4th of November, Wednesday. Below are the date and timings to be noted:
Karwa Chauth Tithi Timings:
Chaturthi Starts: November 4th, 2020 at 03:24 AM

Timings for Karwa Chauth Vrat: 06:35 AM to 08:12 PM
Moonrise: 08:12 PM
During the Karwa Chauth pooja, breaking the fast and exchange of gifts can be done, once the beautiful sight of the Moon is visible. The married woman dresses like a bride in auspicious colours of Karva Chauth and stands along with her husband in front of the glowing moon. Later, the couple performs the rituals by singing folk songs, where the husband helps his better half to end the fast.
How to perform Karva Chauth Pooja?
There are some Do’s and Don’ts for Karva Chauth that one needs to keep in mind. Here is how to perform Karva Chauth Puja accurately:

Then you can begin your one-day Fast. You should not consume food or drink water until you see the Moon.
In the evening, perform Ganesh pooja and worship the Goddess Parvati and the God Shiva. In case you are not aware of the Vedic rituals let our experts in performing Ganesh Puja online at the comforts of your home.
Look out for the glimpse of the Moon and once the Moon is visible, break the day-long fast.
Break your fast by drinking water and eating sweets from your husband’s hand.
Seek blessings from God and elderly people of your family.
Myth of Karva Chauth Vrat
According to the Hindu belief, the story of queen Veervati gave us the reason to observe Karva Chauth Vrat. The queen Veervati was the first one to keep the Karwa Chauth Vrat. The queen waited for the moon to appear so that she could break the fast. Later, the queen found herself unwell and seeing this, her brothers requested her to break the fast. When the queen refused to do so, her brothers came up with a bait and Veervati fell into it. When the queen agreed to break the fast, the news arrived that her husband, the King, was dead.
In Mahabharata, Draupadi kept the Karwa Chauth Vrat for the Pandavas. Similarly, goddess Parvati also had Karwa Chauth Vrat for her husband, Lord Shiva. Another tale behind the famous Karva Chauth Vrat is of women Karva who challenged Yama (God of death), and in return, she earned the longevity of her husband.
Wrapping Up:
Now, you know how this fast is being observed on Karwa Chauth and the significance of performing it. Women since ages keep Vrat to seek blessings for the longevity of their husbands. This not only shows the love of women to their husbands but also to her in-laws. In fact, the unmarried girls also keep Vrat on this day to fulfil their desire of getting a caring life partner.

5 Unique Karwa Chauth Gifts for Daughter-in-Law that She is Sure to Love
Indian traditions and festivals hold so much significance in our lives. After few weeks of Ganesh Chaturthi, India will once more be covered in festive spirit with Karwa Chauth. Though this festival is meant for married women, it serves as a get-together between family and relatives. On this day, a married Hindu woman fasts from sunrise till moonrise. She neither eats nor drinks water during the fast. A woman goes through this ardent fast to pray for the long, happy and prosperous life of her husband. Since this is the most difficult fast, involving no consumption of solid or liquid food, women are allowed to have a pre-fast meal before sunrise. This meal is prepared by their mothers-in-law and consists of mathri, dry fruit, mithai, parantha, sabzi, etc. And it is also essential for mothers-in-law to give gifts to their fasting bahus. Irrespective of whether it is the 1st or 10th Karwa Chauth of your daughter-in-law, make her feel special and loved with these gifts:
1. A Sweet Surprise

KASHMIR-10069, Kashmir, 1998
CAPTION: Sharbat Gula, Afghan Girl. Peshawar, Pakistan, 1984. MAX PRINT SIZE: 40×60′ Sharbat Gula, at Nasir Bagh refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan, 1984 -Untold (pg. 81) National Geographic Magazine, Vol. 167, No. 6, June 1985, Along Afghanistan’s War-torn Frontier. “The green-eyed Afghan girl became a symbol in the late twentieth century of strength in the face of hardship. Her tattered robe and dirt-smudged face have summoned compassion from around the world; and her beauty has been unforgettable. The clear, strong green of her eyes encouraged a bridge between her world and the West. And likely more than any other image, hers has served as an international emblem for the difficult era and a troubled nation.” – Phaidon 55 The iconic image does not stand outside of time. Rather, it connects with the moment in a deeply profound way. Such as images are imbued with meaning, a significance that resonates deeply with a wide and diverse audience. McCurry’s photograph of the Afghan girl is one such image. For many, this beautiful girl dressed in a ragged robe became a worldwide symbol for a nation in a state of collapse. Haunted eyes tell of an Afghan refugee’s fears. — Bannon, Anthony. (2005). Steve McCurry. New York: Phaidon Press Inc., 12.
Woman at a horse festival, Tagong, Tibet, 1999McCurry pictured this woman at the famous Tagong horse festival. It is a vivid image. The emerald green shirt, adorned with delicate white flowers, contrasts sharply with the rich blues and reds of the necklaces and rouge applied to the woman’s cheeks and lips. All set against a blood red backdrop, it makes for an intoxicating picture.Phaidon, Looking East, The Path to Buddha, Iconic Images, final book_iconic, final print_milanMagnum Photos, NYC31808, MCS1999007K001Each portrait speaks a thousand words about its subject and their world. The intricately carved beads of a festival-goer in Kham, Tibet, unwittingly demonstrate as skill in handicraft that has been almost entirely lost in the West. The striking robes and ceremonial clothing of monks and worshippers at temple are vividly colored by the very same natural dyes and spices that first lured Western traders to Asia. McCurry, Steve. (2006). Looking East. New York: Phaidon Press Inc., 61 final print_milan
TIBET-10009, Monk at Jokhang temple, Lhasa, Tibet, 2000’There was something about his face,’ McCurry has said of this monk at the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, Tibet. There was some ‘ancient feeling, some kind of ancient truth there. I have never seen a face quite like his.’ He looks with intensity into McCurry’s camera, deeply aware of the transience of the moment.”The lines of time trace a deep personal history across this old monk’s face. It seems as though his has been a life of enquiry, a quest for a truth, on a higher level. He looks into the lens of the camera with a searching gaze. That is what attracted McCurry, as he visited the Jokhang Temple on his photographic pilgrimage through Tibet, sketching with his camera the various pathways to the Buddha. – Phaidon 55Magnum Photos, NYC31836, MCS2000009 K001Phaidon, 55, Looking East, The Path to Buddha, Iconic Images, final print_milan, final book_iconic
Painted Boy, Bombay, India.1996 Boy participating in the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is covered with red powder during the exuberant celebration. This festival marks the birthday of the elephant headed deity Lord Ganesh, son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and one of Hinduism’s most popular deities. Praying to Ganesh during the festival is believed to protect one from obstacles in life and bring good luck and prosperity for the family. In the midst of the festival of Ganesh in Bombay, as people young and old processed from their neighbourhoods to the sea, McCurry interrupted a youngster with a request to make his picture. The boy consented, and one reads in his eyes the vulnerability of his acceptance. We see a fragment of festive time, a stilled moment extracted from a noisy, exuberant parade. Yet in that sliver of time, a much larger psychological proposition was created: the boy, framed on the one side by three aggressive slashes of red upon the light face of a pillar; the shadow form of another person at his other side; and the central anchor of his intensely questioning eyes.
