Hi!
I’m Skye. A young and smol cybersec enthusiast that likes messing around with computers and sofware! Currently I am learning about Linux systems and othet stuff. I love using old computers and retro videogames for custom firmware. I like coding a lot. Javascript and Python are my main programming languages, I am trying to find others that I like but I end up returning to these two always lol.

Welcome to my Game Dev Blog!
My name's Ender- I'm a game developer as a bit of a hobby (Even though I've been looking for jobs as a developer for a while now;;), and this blog is meant to record and show off the progress of a game I've been working on for a while, now!
I'll be using this blog to post updates on the game's progress, ideas I've been thinking about, and maybe other miscellaneous, game-development-oriented things!
I've made a personal promise to myself, that every element of this game is going to be made by me, personally! I'm using RPG Maker MV for the engine, but besides that- Music, Art, Writing, Design, and everything in-between is my own!
I hope you enjoy the game- The summary of which is extended below the "Keep Reading" line!
"Of Acid and Steel" (The title's still a bit of a work-in-progress) is a Fantasy RPG, where you play as a dracokin by the name of Cernos Talonswallow, who dreams of becoming a great hero, one day.
For an unknown reason, Cernos was left, by his parents, in the care of Erickson Ironbeard, a dwarf blacksmith in the small village of Pimaia. As he grew up, Cernos only heard second-hand stories about his family and the Talonswallow clan, of whom his parents were the leaders.

After learning of how important family and clanship was to his kin, Cernos began to draw his own conclusions about why he was left in the care of Eric, his uncle. He believed that, in his early childhood, he had made a mistake, or was lacking in some manner that warranted his abandonment. From this conclusion, he resolved to prove his own worth to his parents, one way or another, by becoming a hero; Such that his name would reach his parents' ears, and he would be worthy of the family name he inherited.

Years of begging his uncle- Who he loved too much to leave without approval from- Training, and growing up leads to a fateful day, when Cernos finally proves that he's ready to take on the world outside the small village he grew up in.
But, his adventure is bound to reach much further than even he expects...

Hello! You can call me Sachi. This is my first post on my blog as well as an introduction to what I plan to accomplish here.

I'm particularly choosy with my preference of games. I enjoy RPG-style games with pixel art, mainly adventure or horror games, but it can oftentimes be difficult to find a unique game that isn't a carbon copy or a ripoff of another game.
That being said, I created this blog as somewhat of a helping tool for people who are picky or want to find RPG-style games, visual novels, and so forth with certain criteria such as the gender of the protagonist, the age of the characters, the primary horror elements focused on throughout the story, games similar to a game you like, or the release date.
I am also posting a compilation of RPG games with certain features every 5 days, so stay tuned!
I've played 75 titles (not to mention exploring new ones every day) that revolve around RPG-horror games, including classics and games by niche creators. I hope this blog can act as a tool to helping people find games that suit their preferences and am always open to asks or requests!

#I choose trevelyan mage mostly because it Makes sense in my head and the protags explanations are “maker” and stuff regardless of race so#Idk the circumstances too#As an elf id simply leave.#I actually really like adaars role in it all except how shitty the camera angles are and how little dialogue options they get#It's just you and bull as the only qunari at skyhold basically and you're not even a part of the culture you're vasoth#So as a person they're interesting and fits perfectly in as the body guard who was trying to protect the divine and failed etc#But it's lonely#You barely get to communicate with your mercenary team#And cadash is a criminal it's an interesting perspective and all but it's weirdly fit in?#Idk idk#Humans are more basic but in daI the feel like they fit better in when it comes to the remade voice and situation#Especially the mage who were at the conclave with the others#A templar could have been interesting too honestly#Idk hawkes origin is good becayse they're substance and personality even if you pick one#They have family and they have a compelling and fitting intro#Eh#In dao you get to choose and a whole intro to the game is dependant on what you pick. There should be equal or greater attention given to trans organizations in UK (even global ones too), trans creators, trans fundraisers, trans resources, trans safety, trans joy, and actual support (especially to transfems)

Indigo Park: Salem is Important
I've already done a post on why I think Lloyd is important. I go over how I think he's the first mascot and the OG face for the Indigo brand. Not to mention, drawing a parallel to Mickey and Oswald. You can read it here.
There is also this picture at the beginning of Rambley's Railroad can suggest that Lloyd is giving the deed to the park to Rambley. I.e. transferring ownership to him, as seen here.

We also see Lloyd as a statue that's very similar to the style of the Rambley and Isaac statue we see when entering the park. I haven't seen this mention with people, but I think the biggest case for the other important mascot is Salem.

Anything regarding to Salem is a mystery. Salem's part in Rambley's Railroad is completely destroyed. There's splats of blood, Rambley glitches out, Salem's cutout is ripped in half, and hints that Rambley's Railroad used to be Lloyd's Limos, in the backrooms.

Any important lore drop for Indigo Park, Salem is somehow connected. In the video game portion, where it's revealed Salem was the one who was corrupting the squirrels, then goes ahead and corrupts Mollie.

This is hinting to something big, something that possibly happened to the mascots at the park. Rambley did say, in a way, the mascots are like their cartoony selves. Via when he tells Ed the truth and in the credits song. Something either corrupted them or it could be symbolic to how trauma changes you. Within the same game, if you drop near the first half off of it, we see Mollie's sprite in a cage.

I mention trauma is because I think it's obvious that Mollie and the other living mascots were physically and emotionally abused by the staff and the on-goers at the park. Mollie can repeat things that were said back to her.

"I wanna play with the birdie!" "Don't touch that thing, son." "It barely hurts at all..." "Get up, you stupid freak." "Get back in your cage, bird." "The customer is always right." Mollie and Lloyd are conscious beings who were tossed around and mistreated from the employees to the people visiting the park. They treated them like they were just props, things. The parent calls Mollie a THING. The employees called Mollie a "stupid freak" and for her to get back in her cage. As shown in the video game. They were treated like rag dolls and if they didn't do want the employees wanted, they would get beat or screamed at, or left to rot in cages. It just makes the line "It barely hurts at all!" more dark.
It barely hurts at all.
She's convincing herself that the abuse she is going through is fine or that she's used to it. Or an employee saying the abuse she is going through isn't hurting her. It barely hurts at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Indigo Park's underlying horror is mistreating people as just tensions of the park to sell a fantasy towards parent for a quick buck, instead of, y'know, treating them like people.
Not to mention, Salem uses potions. Magic. A possible hint to how the mascots were brought to life. They aren't robots or anything, but they're conscious, living beings. Now, let's take a look at Salem's intro card. It was censored before chapter 1 was released, but I believe it is important.

Note of some important things here. They are a major trouble maker, super quick, and cunning. Interesting. Personally, in a speculation of mine is that Salem was the first one to act out and think what the employees and on-goers at the park treating them and the other mascots were wrong. Anytime something of lore is dropped or something of importance, Salem is involved. Salem is important.
Either or not they're an ally or enemy to Rambley and Ed, we'll see. Heck, Salem doesn't have any merch minus a keychain. So, whenever Salem is on the screen pay attention. Isn't it odd that Rambley NEVER mentions Salem? Like, the dude mentions Lloyd and he hates his guts. Interesting.

Been rewatching a whole YouTube playlist about DOOM, and it's got me thinking about Doomguy as a hero
Because despite being the executor of possibly the most brutal violence and carnage ever put on a TV screen...Doomguy's force is never directed at a fellow human being. People have described the Slayer's one and only goal, his purpose, as "to exterminate each and every demon in existence", but I think I'd view it more as "his purpose is to protect innocent lives, period".
Still probably the greatest piece of characterization in these games is the very beginning of DOOM 2016, the leadup to the title screen. Doomguy enters that elevator from the intro facility to the start of the game proper, and Hayden starts telling us about how "oh, they only had the best of intentions when they started mining Hell for energy. Sure, it's all gone bad now, but it was worth the risk, I assure you!". As Samuel tries to convince us that this was all for the greater good, he only had people's best interests at heart, Doomguy simply looks at the corpse of a security guard on the floor of the elevator (who definitely didn't sign up to the possibility of being disemboweled by hellspawn), looks up and is visibly shaking with fury as he presses his fists together, and then smashes the speaker Hayden's talking through, transitioning us to the game's title card.
Absolutely perfection. Tells you everything you need to know about Doomguy's motivations and resolve without a single word. Though if he had said anything, it'd probably just be quoting Ripley from Aliens: "Bad call? THESE PEOPLE ARE DEAD! Do you realize what you've done here?".
Everyone in these games is constantly trying to tell Doomguy that sacrifices have to be made for the greater good, and he utterly refuses to entertain that notion when human lives are concerned. Not to mention that, while the games play with the metatextual conceit that Doomguy doesn't give a shit about the lore or narrative or bigger picture, he's just there to slaughter evil (the same way most Doom players and indeed Doom co-creator John Carmack view story as merely window dressing for gameplay)...if you headcanon that Doomguy actually IS reading all the logs and lore that he's picking up as collectibles, you know he's aware that all of the higher-up decision makers at the UAC are straight-up demon worshippers attempting to bring about the apocalypse, and thus nothing they say can be trusted.
As far as Doomguy is concerned, there's no compromise when it comes to innocent lives. If one innocent person has to die in order to uphold the established system, the system is to be violent ripped down and smashed into the dirt, never to be rebuilt. That's how he feels about Hayden's UAC, that's how he feels about Khan Maykr's plans in Eternal. That's WHY his fight is eternal, because he'll fight anyone, even those he once fought alongside, if they choose to say, to end this post on a joke, "some of you may die, but that is a risk I'm willing to take".

As someone who has watched @janmisali's "how many Super Mario games are there" video several times and is eagerly awaiting the sequel (don't worry, I filled out the new survey already), I noticed something interesting in the beginning of GMTK's newest video. During the intro, he says he's played "... every single mainline entry in the Super Mario Brothers series". Naturally, my first reaction was to figure out what exact list of games that is. During this scene (mostly as a gag), he's set up a stack of games on the side. From bottom to top, they are:

This is mostly similar to the "popular" 18-game list in the jan Misali video, with a couple differences. GMTK does include all 3 Maker games, which is completely fine since it's consistent.
While making this list I learned that the European SNES used the same design as the Super Famicom. I think this makes it likely that one of the unidentified carts is The Lost Levels, which would make the list otherwise match Misali's. I think the best candidate for the other cart is Yoshi's Island. Both of those appear in the video footage, but I don't know how to confirm either guess.
If someone has Mark Brown's contact and wants to waste his time asking for his justification on the enumeration and classification of the mainline series of games within the Mario franchise, let me know.
He also includes the following games in the video as footage, although seeing as the video also includes a lot of non-Mario games this probably means nothing for GMTK's opinion on what games are part of the mainline series:

It's been a little while, what have I been working on?
My latest work went into making some pretty significant tweaks to the battle results screen. Really starting to tie things together now, but it's not quite finished yet! That's not all, though.

Back in May I was experimenting with RPG Maker's "weather" system. I had implemented a map-specific "overhang" layer that framed the edges of rooms with black space. That prevented weather effects - like snow particles - from displaying beyond the boundaries of the room.
The frogs are just my debug objects for turning the snow on and off.

But it's not like I wanted it to snow indoors - after I had the overhangs figured out, I rewrote the behaviour and graphics code for the "snow" particles to create these dust particles that float around aimlessly.

This ought to make the catacomb interiors feel appropriately dusty - and make the environments feel less still and lifeless in general.

They even display on the battle screen... though sometimes they tend to crowd around the left side of the screen because of the panning and sliding during the battle intro animation. I'll have to fix that at some point.

During May and June, Vito got a complete set of battle sprites and an attack animation.

And so did Yolei. Oh, and the dog enemy is also new.

The dog enemy is very evasive, but also cowardly and not very tough.

It is capable of the "flee" action, something that slimes and skeletons will not do.

At the end of June I added a MAJOR quality of life feature. When Ashley is facing something on the map that can be interacted with or talked to with the action button, a quotation bubble with an exclamation mark will pop up above their head. No ambiguity! No more pixel hunting or mashing the action button in front of every random tile!
I didn't save any screenshots in July, it was a busy month I guess. But in August I got back to work.

Well, I'm revisiting this enemy type with more practice under my belt. Here are some gifs I recorded as I was figuring them out and implementing their assets and abilities.

As armored enemies, they are very hardy - the weaker party members will have a hard time damaging them with basic attacks.

In addition to their basic attacks, all undead enemies can perform a skill that inflicts "fear" status on one party member, which depletes their morale over time...

Here's the same battle running with the mood lighting and dust effects turned on. While I was fiddling with the code, I was also able to configure the target animation to not play if the skill misses. It looked sloppy otherwise.

At some point I put a big, animated door on the front entrance of the debug dungeon. I used this door as a testing model for other interactive doors to use later.

I also spent the last few days of the month filling out Nana's spellbook with some more spell animations. "Dazzle" inflicts dizzy on the entire enemy party. Dizzy enemies have a chance of hitting the wrong target with their basic attacks - including their own allies. Hitting a dizzy target with a basic attack will also knock them down and stun them for one turn.

"Fume" poisons one enemy with a cloud of noxious gas, dealing damage over time.
I should of course note that since skeletons don't breathe, they can't be poisoned in the final game - I was only using this one to demonstrate the animation here.

Well, how would Wally react to that? And as time goes by wally falls in love with the reader, how would he see the reader's fans and his job of doing live, playing games, watching videos?

“Hello everyone and welcome back or to my stream! Today I’m looking at this website called “ Welcome Home.” You greeted explaining the website you found while starting your stream.
You’ve been a streamer for a few weeks, but you’ve managed to gain a lot of popularity due to keeping up with the popular topics of the months. And out of nowhere you had found the website “ Welcome Home”. You don’t know how or why it just one day popped up in one of your emails probably from some fan of yours wanting you to review it. Strangest thing about the email was how nothing was said about the website and the email even seemed to be sketchy, but curiosity got the best of you.
So without thinking or whatever had possessed you made you click on the website. For a second the bright colors and themes of the website blinded you as your eyes tried to adjust to it. The bright colors and theme of the website amazed you. As you looked further into it the website explained it was an abandoned puppet studio they had found. And wanted to revive or find out more about the old show that seemed to have been wiped from history.
You’ve heard a few things about the website and it’s fast rise to popularity so it would probably do you some good to check it out. What’s a little curiosity going to hurt?
” There’s glitches in the website?” You questioned as people flooded your comments with all the glitches in the game.
You decided to check them out after previewing the characters information about them. Though one character in particular caught your eye. Wally Darling he was the only character who ever made eye contact with the viewer. Especially in official art or any on the website his large black eyes almost followed you around in a way. It was creepy, but you guessed that might have just been something the maker of the website did.
Little did you know it wasn’t. As the lively black eyes followed you are still peering into your own eyes. Even peaking onto your stream. As you chatted to your so called “chat” about the website.

“ Hello and welcome to or back to my stream!” You said doing your usual intro for your stream.
“ Sorry if the quality is bad! I’ve been having some trouble with my computer, but that won’t stop me.” You announced.
Ever since you went onto the welcome home website you’ve been having technical difficulties with your computer. You’ve rebooted it twice, brought it to someone for repairs, and after all that you were told nothings wrong with it. Now here’s the oddest thing today as you streamed your graphics and everything was fine. No buggs or anything it was fine. Acting as if there wasn’t anything wrong with it for the last week!
“ Well I’ll just end the stream here. Thank you all watching!” You said as you finally ended the stream.
Sighing out you looked at your now glitching computer. You brought your lips to a pout still thinking of what possible way your computer would be fine. How could it be fine if it’s doing this? And what’s with the eyes that would always pop up randomly. The eyes seemed so familiar in a way too. Were you being hacked? This was just starting to get ridiculous. Who and what is doing this shit?!

Your ‘streams’ as you called them were always so interesting. He’s never really seen anything like this and you even do it for a living? A very fun job in his opinion! To just info dump, review, and give your own input on whatever you were doing sounded like a dream.
As you talked he couldn’t help but become mesmerized with your voice. It was just so addictive to just watch you all day doing your streams without a care in the world. Especially as his dark eyes watched your face contort into so many different emotions. Whether it be anger, sadness, disgust, or even adoration all of them looked so beautiful on your beautiful face. He looked forward to watching you ever day. In a way you could say he was your number one fan because he was always the first one to watch your streams every day.
But once they ended he still had front row seats to his next favorite stream. What you did when the camera was off. This was when you didn’t put on your little persona for the camera and everything was just artificially you. He loved this part of you the most. Even if you didn’t know he was there he always was watching you. You were all his thoughts had clouded over with. A fog of nothing but your sweet face saying his name in admiration just as he hoped to someday say to you.
Oh, how he just yearned to be with you! But not yet, no it’s not time. Not yet…

I know it will never happen, but after hearing those voice claims on Patreon, I would pay ungodly amounts of money for a Fire Emblem-esque SoH game. Like, I don't know where you would even start, but if you did end up deciding to make one, no bank would be safe from me 💰
Hey, never say never! A Fire Emblem-esque ShoH game would be a dream! 🥹 You never know, who knows where my future in game development goes after this entry gets published?... I can dream too, right? 😂
Actually, if you want some little-known trivia, before I started working with ChoiceScript, I actually made a proof-of-concept intro for Shepherds as a JRPG-style turn-based pixel game back in early 2017! It was basically just to learn the engine, RPG Maker (my thing seemed to be throwing Shepherds as a story template at any new programming language I came across), and didn't follow the prologue of our version (no Caine or Prihine, the protagonist just gets plopped into Haven right away and joins the Shepherds), but I built a whole map of Ashtown and Whitestone in it; that 100-hour venture ended up planting the seeds for some of the stuff that takes place in our version of the game! You could explore every nook and cranny of the Shepherds' compound and Ashtown, talk to several hundred NPCs who all had their own routines and walkabouts around the city, and even play minigames and engage in turn-based party combat!
Unfortunately, it was all made on the 3DS version of RPG Maker, so it's not shareable as a demo unless you have a 3DS and are willing to download a free app (but Nintendo pulled the servers for the 3DS, so I don't even think that's possible anymore). I do have some bad pictures I took of the 3DS with the demo running, though!

Dog!! You can sneak a peek at Trouble hanging out in front of the Shepherds' compound on the left: this version of RPG Maker only allowed for premade assets, so the character art for the Shepherds themselves was extremely limited... 😔 ↴

I only took screenshots of a few of the rooms, like a sparring gym, Blade's office, the main atrium (there were two guardian 'Viveks', lion gargoyles named Leo and Lionel, and they'd randomly stop you if you walked by them to engage in some silly random dialogue and generally be a nuisance before letting you get through the door), the refectory, one of the dormitories, etc.) ↴

Hollow Knight and Masks
Okay I just wanna ramble for a bit about Hollow Knight and the theme of masks and hiding ones true nature cause I think the game leads up to this in such fun ways
I'm sure people have talked more in depth about specifically the use of masks like with the mask maker but I more wanted to talk about how I saw this theme of pretending to be something your not with other bosses and creatures in the game. I think pretty early on we can even see it start to play out with the mosscreeps and mosschargers. In the Hunter's notes for the mosscharger it says "It's small, but it finds a lot of courage and strength once it covers itself in foliage. And I can understand the desire to camouflage oneself.." They're weaker but trying to make themself more intimidating through camouflage.
And I think pretty similarly the False Knight shows this too with the maggots using the armor. They're weaker but with the armor can look more intimidating and use it as a shield to hide their true nature.
I think I really started to pick up on this theme with the Soul Master though. We see the effects of the research in the Soul Sanctum leading up to it, but everything about the Soul Master's intro is meant to make you think this is a prestigious, grand scholarly figure. He appears dramatically, and it's clear he's carefully created this persona that demands respect. But obviously as the fight draws to a close and you fall through the glass you see the reality of what he really is- he's a mad scientist whose sacrificed hundreds of people in the pursuit of his research into soul.
I think Nosk is also a fantastic way of showing this theme, having a creature that creates a 'mask' to hide its true nature and lure people into its lair.
Anyway I think it's just a fun thematic thread through some of the enemies that hints at bigger examples of this for later in the game and I think it's very fun. Obviously also the fact that it ties into how a lot of bugs actually work is fun, how they use camouflage to blend in, or having patterns that make them look like more dangerous animals.
