Garō Densetsu Special (Super Nintendo - Takara - 1995 - JPN) Lately, I’ve been looking for SNK’s fighting games adaptations on Super Nintendo. But given the fact that the European versions are slower, I exceptionally am looking for the Japanese versions. Fatal Fury Special is notoriously downgraded in the PAL version, having less memory and missing characters, because… reasons. Starlink: Battle for Atlas (Nintendo Switch - Ubisoft - 2018 - EUR) Starlink is one of those « toys to life » kind of games where you can unlock various content via NFC toys. I got my starter pack thanks to massive bargains in store, due to the game’s not so massive success. And it was the StarFox extra content that got me sold. I try since to gather more Starlink toys at low price in order to complete my set. Mega Man 11 (Switch - Capcom - 2018 - USA) I´m a huge Mega Man fan and I was quite disappointed that the game wouldn’t come out on cartridge in Europe. I don’t like to mix different regions in my collection, but I’m ready to do anything for my beloved blue bomber. So this is the American version of the game, and you couldn’t really tell the difference at first glance, so I am relieved. There are several games that are only available online for Europe that have true releases in the US, like the old Resident Evil and such. I would gladly get them but they are a bit pricy out there. New Super Luigi U (Wii U - Nintendo - 2013 - FRA) I was curious about this pseudo sequel to a game I liked, so I bought it. It also was supposed to be a limited release, so I had to hurry, even if it’s pretty easy to find copies of it nowadays. The time limit is a great idea and the new playable character Nabbit is really fun, especially for newcomers. The thing is I was kind of already overdosed with NSMBU, so I kept this game for later... which is still yet to come. I was so pumped up to finally play a new installment of my beloved Ace Attorney franchise that I started a marathon with the original trilogy, just to get all the lore. Sadly, those games are not meant to be played one after another, they are too much alike and I felt bored in the middle of my run of the second game. 1080° Avalanche (GameCube - Nintendo - 2003 - FRA) It took me some time to understand how to play and to enjoy this game. It doesn’t play like its predecessor at all, and the tricks mechanic is not as destructive for the analog sticks as before, which is fine. The game is overall ok but it suffers from a lack of content and tracks: for instance there is just only one snow park. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (GameCube - Electronic Arts - 2004 - FRA) When I was working at EA in 2003, I heard rumors about the company acquiring the rights to GoldenEye. Everybody knew about its successful N64 adaptation, and we all dreamt of a next gen version of it, or at least some kind of a worthy sequel. Turns out the GoldenEye moniker was just used as a marketing bait to appeal a large clueless audience. The result is a dull and repetitive game that have good ideas but doesn’t use them well. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (GameCube - Capcom - 2003 - FRA) I’m not particularly fond of this episode. For starters, I don’t really like Jill’s character model and voice this time, I prefer when she is portrayed by Julia Voth in REbirth or RE5. Carlos is also pretty dumb too. I am not crazy about the Nemesis either: I like to take my time to explore and not being attacked constantly by the big fellow. And last, there is just only one campaign this time around, with a few branching paths, sure, but the game is really straightforward. Rez (Dreamcast - Sega - 2001 - PAL) One of the most amazing and unique experience I had with a video game. Rez is a mesmerizing shooter that synchronizes its OST to your shots, and it can be totally hypnotic: at one point I was so focused on the action that I entered in some kind of trance state. Weird. Its design made me think of the Lawnmower Man and the last time I was impressed with a shooter was with Galaxian 3. Luigi’s Mansion (GameCube - Nintendo - 2001 - FRA) Let’s start my GameCube collection with the most iconic title of the system’s launch. I got the GameCube day one but I didn’t bought Luigi’s Mansion right away: I got Sonic Adventures 2 and Rogue Squadron instead. My birthday being close to the system’s release, it was the perfect opportunity to get another game for free, and it was Luigi’s Mansion. I loved my time on this game, the art direction is cool, it can be brain scratching at time, and I love the general Ghostbuster vibe. Sadly, the game can be repetitive and tedious, especially with the Boo hunt, and the experience is pretty short too. Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance - Nintendo - 2004 - EUR) 🌟
My favorite Metroid game, for various reasons: first, it’s easy to pick up and play, then it’s nice looking and last, it plays flawlessly. It’s so satisfying progressing and shooting enemies. The first time I completed it was on my trip to Japan, so it has good memories attached to it as well. And the final chapter is so clever. Highly recommended.

WipeOut 64 (Nintendo 64 - Psygnosis - 1998 - EUR) 🌟 I remember being blown away by WipeOut when it first came out on PlayStation. This game represented everything I was into at the time, such as techno music, cyberpunk and crazy graphic design by The Designer Republic. Its sequel was even better, and I was so jealous not to be able to play a WipeOut game on my N64 (I didn’t have a Playstation at the time). When WipeOut 64 finally came out, I had mixed feelings: it looked less cool on N64, the menu design was less appealing and without being on a CD, the music’s quality and selection wasn’t as revolutionary. But the game shines in the gameplay department, with the analog stick finally making WipeOut playable at high speed: it’s more precise and even the stiffest ships are fun to play. It took me some time to realize that all the race tracks of WipeOut 64 are reused from the two previous installment, with just a new coat of paint and a mirrored. I’ve spent hours in the challenge mode to get all the gold medals and boy that was tough. The cherry on the cake is the multiplayer mode, far more convenient to set up than the PlayStation versions. Dark Arms: Beast Buster 1999 (Neo Geo Pocket Color - SNK - 1999 - EURO)
Back in the days, as I was enjoying fighting games on my NGPC, I started looking for something else to play with. The magazines used to talk about Dark Arms saying that it was the NGPC’s « Zelda », so I blindly followed their advice. I was a bit disappointed because This two games have nothing in common, except for the overhead view maybe. Dark Arms is more like a hack’n slash/action RPG, with some crafting. Once the first playthrough is done, you have to revisit every map to level up your stuff, so the post game can be quite repetitive, the real problem being that the main campaign is pretty short. Enjoyable but not as profound as it was marketed.
