Jesse Owens 1936 Olympic Gold Medal Up For Bids In Goldin Auctions 2019 Holiday Auction
The history of the modern Olympic Games is filled with historic accomplishments – Jim Thorpe's pentathlon and decathlon, Mark Spitz's seven gold medals, the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" – but none had to social, historical or political impact as Jesse Owens' performance at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. One of the four gold medals he earned is up for bids in the Goldin Auctions 2019 Holiday Auction from Nov. 18 through Dec.7, 2019 at GoldinAuctions.com.
"No athletic award carries the same historical weight and value as Jesse Owens' gold medal-winning performance at the 1936 Olympics, for no athlete ever achieved nor proved as much as Owens did during those Games," said Ken Goldin, Founder of Goldin Auctions. "Even though we have offered at auction some of the most iconic sports collectibles, it is the highest honor to share this museum-worthy item with the world."
Of the four, identical gold medals Owens won at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the whereabouts of two have been lost to time. The third, which was gifted by Owens to friend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, was sold at auction in 2013 to supermarket magnate and billionaire investor Ronald Burkle for $1.46 million. The medals awarded at the 1936 Games were not engraved with the name of the awardee nor the event, so it is impossible to verify if this medal is from Owens' win in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, or 4×100-meter relay. The medal is a 55 mm piece of world history. Designed by Giuseppe Cassioli, the obverse has the Goddess of Victory with a palm in her left hand and a winner's crown in her right. "XI. OLYMPIADE BERLIN 1936" in raised letters appear to her right. The reverse features a victorious athlete being carried away from the Olympic stadium by a cheering crowd. The medal shows the expected toning and wear from age and displays magnificently. It comes with a Letter of Authenticity (LOA) from PSA certifying it as an official Gold medal from the 1936 Olympics.
At the 1936 Games, Owens became the first athlete in Olympic history to win four gold medals. On top of his stunning display of athletic ability, Owens' record-breaking exploits was a crushing defeat of Hitler's Aryan racial ideology. Owens returned to America a hero, but his fame was short-lived. Racial laws and cultural norms kept Owens from capitalizing on his Olympic triumphs. Because of the color of his skin, there were no corporate endorsements, high paying speaking engagements or coaching offers.
Fortunately, Owens' friends often came through with job opportunities that kept the former Olympian financially stable. One of those friends was John Terpak, Sr., a weightlifter who met Owens during the 1936 Games. As early as 1954, Terpak arranged for Owens to appear at speaking events in his native Pennsylvania, and he was invited back many times over the next decade. Owens showed his appreciation for his friend's continued invites by eventually gifting Terpak one of the four gold medals he won at the 1936 Olympics. While the gifting of a personal memento such as an Olympic gold medal might seem extravagant, it is a documented fact that the Olympic hero had previously presented one of his gold medals to close friend and entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
The medal was a treasured possession of Terpak until he passed away in 1993, whereupon the medal passed to his children Joan and John, Jr. until consigned to Goldin Auctions. The Terpak sibling's affidavit outlines the history of the medal from its gifting by Owens to their father up until the present. The affidavit also mentions the existence of a 1936 gold medal that resides in the York Barbell Museum and states that the museum medal originates from a member of the 1936 US Weightlifting team and is separate from the one gifted to Terpak, Sr. by Jesse Owens. An additional affidavit signed by Robert M. Strickler, the Terpak family lawyer since 1960, states that he was aware of the medal's existence and provenance dating back to the 1960s. It is known that before he passed away in 1980, Owens received replicas of his gold medals. Renowned Olympic medals expert James D. Greensfelder has analyzed this medal and deemed it an authentic example minted for the 1936 Games. His letter of authenticity also accompanies the medal.

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Wednesday 2nd August 2017
"Madainn Mhath” .…Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Welcome to Tuesday the first one of August it was also the day chosen by Germany for the 1936 Germany Olympic Games in 1936 which was possibly one of the most controversial Olympic games of modern times for its opening in Berlin, Germany with a ceremony presided over by Adolf Hitler. The Games of the XI Olympiad were used by Germany as a tool for propaganda. to promote their ideology, and its promotion of the superiority of the "Aryan Race" by only allowing Germans of "Aryan race" to compete for Germany…well that’s another thing Hitler got wrong…I was thinking about this when my Black Lab Bella and I did our morning walk today, not so hot this morning and the breeze from the north West makes it even more comfortable ..But we still needed our drinks when we got home.. and the Colombian Coffee tastes wonderful this morning as does the cookies made of rice…. So after all that lets have a look at what happened in this messed up place we call Earth….
HENDERSON LOGGIE THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND DUNDEE GAMING FESTIVAL…. Accountancy firm Henderson Loggie has reached an agreement to support Scotland’s newest gaming festival, which is due to take place in Dundee in September. The four-day event will kick off with the inaugural Games Design Awards co-sponsored by the firm, which is already behind the Indie Zone at the three-day Insomnia X Resonate gaming festival opening in Glasgow this weekend. At the Dundee event, Henderson Loggie partner and creative media specialist Steve Cartwright will host a workshop on financial strategy. Cartwright said: “We will also be on hand to talk about video games tax relief, which has been giving UK companies a competitive advantage in a global market since it was introduced three years ago. “It is imperative that games developers are aware at the outset what they need to do to qualify from the earliest planning stages so that they don’t miss out.” Colin Macdonald, head of All 4 Games, Channel 4’s Glasgow-based games publishing arm, added: “Scotland already punches well above its weight in the global gaming industry and our game developers deserve gongs to underline and celebrate both their cultural contributions and the value they bring to the economy.
WEALTH MANAGER BREWIN DOLPHIN DELIVERS RECORD INCOME…. Wealth manager Brewin Dolphin is seeing the benefits of a major restructuring across the business with latest quarterly income rising to record levels. The company, which employs about 200 in Edinburgh and around 50 more across offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee, saw income in the third quarter of its financial year increase by 8.4 per cent to £77.3 million. Total funds under management rose 3.7 per cent during the quarter to reach £39.2 billion. In recent years the firm has shifted its focus from being a stockbroker to a wealth manager with chief executive David Nicol overseeing moves including the sale of its execution-only business, Stocktrade, to Alliance Trust and the purchase of Duncan Lawrie Asset Management. Nicol said the second half of the year had started well and the integration of the Duncan Lawrie business was delivering benefits. “We continue to make steady progress in delivering against our long-term growth strategy and our confidence in the future is underpinned by our robust financial position,” he added. Jonathan Goslin at Numis, who has a “hold” rating on Brewin Dolphin’s shares, said: “Although we believe the ongoing restructuring is the right approach and we generally like the wealth management industry, we believe much of this is already reflected in its current valuation and we remain mindful of the impact such an aggressive restructuring can have on earnings.”
SMOKING TO BE BANNED IN SCOTTISH PRISONS FROM 2018…. Smoking will be prohibited in Scotland’s jails by the end of next year under plans announced by prison chiefs. The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) says it intends to make all jails north of the border “smoke-free” by November 2018. The move is designed to tackle the “unacceptably high risk” posed to the health of prisoners, staff and visitors by passive smoking. The announcement was accompanied by the launch of a major report on prison workers’ exposure to second-hand smoke. The large-scale study led by the University of Glasgow - described as the most comprehensive analysis of its kind in the world - found workers’ exposure to such smoke is similar to that experienced by someone living in a typical smoking home in Scotland. SPS chief executive Colin McConnell said: “This report is a call to action. It is not acceptable that those in our care and those who work in our prisons should be exposed to second-hand smoke. “We have already put measures in place to reduce this risk by insisting that prisoners close their cell doors when they are smoking, thereby reducing the exposure of that smoke to others. We have also modified our daily working practices to reduce this secondary exposure. “However, the fact remains that the only way to remove this risk is to remove smoking from our prisons, so I am today committing the SPS to achieving a smoke-free prison estate by the end of 2018.”
ALDI £10 DRY GIN BEATS £40 RIVAL TO BE NAMED BEST IN THE WORLD…. An Aldi dry gin that sells for £10 has won top prize at an international spirits competition, beating a £40 rival. Aldi’s Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin, which retails for £9.97, won gold in the dry gin category at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, an award judged by industry experts from across the world. Experts awarded second place to Foxhole London Dry Gin, which sells for £39.99, and describes itself as “velvet textured with violet notes”. The British-made Aldi dry gin also beat Beefeater London Dry Gin, M&S London Dry Gin and Bleu d’Argent London Dry Gin to win the category. Aldi’s spirits earned 20 medals at the competition in total. The German discount supermarket also won the Supermarket Own Brand Spirits Range of The Year category, beating Marks & Spencer, Waitrose – and rival discounter Lidl.
MULTI-MILLION WHISKY DISTILLERY TO OPEN IN GLASGOW…. A new £10 million whisky distillery, visitor centre and restaurant is to be built on the banks of the River Clyde. The Douglas Laing & Co development at Pacific Quay in Glasgow will be the company’s first dedicated site having previously used distillers across the country to make its blends. Water will be piped to the complex from Loch Katrine, the source of Glasgow’s water supply, and 300 tonnes of barley will be brought in from Scottish farms to create whiskies such as Old Particular, Timorous Beastie and The King of Scots. It is hoped the distillery will boost global exports for Douglas Laing and the company said its workforce will almost treble from 22 to 60 staff. The development will include an urban craft distillery, visitor centre, bottling plant, bar and bistro as well as the company’s head office. The earmarked site is owned by Scottish Enterprise and Douglas Laing hopes the distillery will be operational by the end of 2018.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of some Highland Coo's in a field of Heather....are we in The Land Called Scotland or What! ....
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Wednesday 2nd August 2017 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…
