English version DR:THH Gameplay Log #1

⚠️ Note that this Gameplay Log contains many spoilers, not only for THH but also for the entire Danganronpa franchise.

Finally, I started playing the English version of DR:THH, which I had been wanting to do for a long time!

I've only played the original (Japanese) version, and have never seen any playthroughs of the English version. So I am very excited to see how it is translated into English!

The iOS version can be played with English text and audio, so I'll be playing the English version on the iPad and the Japanese version on the Nintendo Switch at the same time. I've only played a little bit, but there are already so many things that interest me that it will probably take me quite a while to finish it. 😅 But anyway! I would like to keep a log of translations that I find interesting. So let's start with the prologue!:

It is interesting that the EN text says, "Which makes Hope's Peak a pretty fitting name", while the JA text says, "まさに、希望の学園と呼ぶに、ふさわしい". The literal translation would be "Academy of Hope", but the EN text focuses on the name "希望(Hope)ヶ('s)峰(Peak)学園(Academy)". In fact, the name "Hope's Peak Academy" is really a literal translation, and miraculously, it works without any special arrangement. XD

By the way, the name of a school like "⚪︎⚪︎ヶ峰 " is a common name and sounds quite natural as a school name. As is often the case in other countries, the names of Japanese schools are often based on place names, and words such as "峰(peak)," "丘(hill)," "北(north)" or "南(south)" are often added to the end of the name to describe the location of the school. So I didn't have such a strong impression of the word "峰(peak)" when I was playing the original version, but it is interesting to see how well it is used in the EN version. 😄

Incidentally, the use of the term "希望の学園" in the JA text has an important meaning: the subtitle of the original version of DR:THH is "希望の学園と絶望の高校生 (Academy of Hope and High School Student* of Despair)" *It is quite difficult to decide whether it should be translated as Student or Students! I chose the singular because I think it probably refers to Junko Enoshima. So this is also the text that explains what the part of the subtitle, Academy of Hope, is about.

I feel that this English translation is now a bit inconsistent with the reality of the academy. In the Japanese version, it says that "��入生の募集などは行なっておらず(the academy does not advertise for new students)", but the EN text says "No ordinary student could enroll here." The original version is also inconsistent, as the Reserve Course was probably not initially conceived, but I feel that the EN text is a bit more incongruous.

The translation "a hopelessly average" is nice. Sorry I forgot to take a screenshot of this part in the JA text, so I don't have an image for comparison, but the original text was "どうしようもなく普通". The original text does not have a meaning related to hope, but the EN text is related to hope.

The original text here is quite quirky, so the English translation has changed the wording quite a bit. I'm not sure if this translation is very nice because I'm not sure if this translation is very nice because I'm not sure about the nuances of "I can't even say I'm your "everyday hero" type". Well, it would have been a difficult sentence to translate. (I can't really go into it because it's so hard to explain!)

Hmmmm, honestly, I am not convinced by this translation. What Makoto said here is that the fact that he has the normal idea of starting by introducing himself is in itself proof that he is a very normal person, but the EN text seems to have a completely different meaning... Perhaps it was difficult to put it into a short sentence and had to be changed significantly.

I didn't know that "前向き" translated to "gung-ho"! Was this translated as gung-ho because of the whole Danganronpa image of a gun? 🤔

The pronunciation (or rather the pitch) of the character's name also feels fresh in the English version! "Makoto" is pronounced almost the same as in Japanese, but "Naegi" is pronounced quite differently. I think other characters may have different pronunciations from the Japanese, so I will summarize the differences when I see the introductions of all the characters.

This was a really fun year for games! I got to try some new genres, played a lot of multiplayer games, and got REALLY into a few single-player narrative driven games. When I have more time I'd like to sit down and really reflect on the games that left an impression on me this year.

Ok so funny thing happened yesterday while i played my new playthrough of Bloodborne.

Basically i went to Yahar’gul, got Adella and she went to Oedon chapel. Speak with her and all. Then i got a bug and she freaking disappeared!

Actually she returned to Yahar’gul lmao 🤣

What did/do you like about Pharah?

Uh, gameplay-wise, I really love characters in shooters who rely on three-dimensional movement techs. Chaining together hover and jump to stay in the air for as long as possible and keep momentum is so satisfying, and picking enemies off from the sky made me feel like a bird of prey. I was a good Pharah main.

Story-wise, there unfortunately isn't much to canonically go off because Pharah is so underutilized and neglected. Her personality's pretty boilerplate "heroic hero" (she's literally inspired by Captain America).

But it's the crumbs/bits and pieces that I really latched onto. Pharah's a confirmed lesbian; her short story with Baptiste implies she harbors a crush on Mercy (fucking thank you.). She's biracial Egyptian/First Nations. She has major mommy issues, having grown up both admiring and resenting Ana. She's the bridge between Old Overwatch, inspired by the idealized heroes who surrounded her childhood, and New Overwatch. She's one of the only inter-generational characters in the cast; someone whose experiences span the gap, which is why I seriously believe Pharah would make a great main character.

There isn't much to go off of, though; she's a very uncomplicated character (she's a soldier for a private military corporation, lol.). But that just means she's a blank slate character, so I've seen fanfic writers run wild and create some really interesting takes on her. My favorite interpretation of her's a dense, herbo gym-bro type (a lot of her liens are about work outs, exercising, and playing sports) who's easily excitable under her seemingly self-serious, armored visage. We see how she tends to gloat and hype herself up when she's on a streak too, so Pharah definitely has a competitive and boastful side under her more professional and militant performance.

Now Mercy? Mercy is a real complex character.

The video is very glitchy because the program was overloaded trying to record, but this was the best I could do with it. I think I'll be taking a break from trying to record gameplay like this but I learned a lot
