A (slightly late) gift for @blueberrydoesart in the punk community swap! Merry Christmas!
Dark Falchion (or, glow effects! and also fun research to get a cool sword to reference)
Tumblr media
A Blueberry (or well, blueberry leaf mostly) Dagger (it spawns blueberry pies every time it's used to stab someone)
Tumblr media
Thorny Rapier (the best protection from stealing, uh, magic)
Tumblr media
and Starsword (aka the one that fits the least because I was leaning way more heavily on magical girl tropes than anything else)
Tumblr media
and here's some dnd descriptions for the thorn and blueberry ones, because they had the cooler worldbuilding

The Girl & The Galdurian (Lightfall #1) by Tim Probert
Rating: 3.5 weird frogs out of 5!
A fun graphic novel series I picked up on a whim while I was at the library. The art is lovely and the worldbuilding is pretty well done imo! Recommended for anyone who wants a graphic novel to bite into, similar in vibes to My Neighbor Totoro and the Amulet series.
Synopsis:
Deep in the heart of the planet Irpa stands the Salty Pig's House of Tonics & Tinctures, home of the wise Pig Wizard and his adopted granddaughter, Bea. As keepers of the Endless Flame, they live a quiet and peaceful life, crafting medicines and potions for the people of their once-prosperous world. All that changes one day when, while walking through the woods, Bea meets Cad, a member of the Galdurians, an ancient race thought to be long-extinct. Cad believes that if anyone can help him find his missing people, it's the Pig Wizard. But when the two arrive home, the Pig Wizard is nowhere to be found--all that's left is the Jar of Endless Flame and a mysterious note. Fearing for the Pig Wizard's safety, Bea and Cad set out across Irpa to find him, while danger fights its way out of the shadows and into the light.
Review under the cut.
What I Liked
"This world is a little strange I will not explain" type beat. This makes for excellent worldbuilding in my experience, and The Girl & the Galdurian is no exception
It is middle grade, and of course there are moments where that is made clear. However, it never feels as though Probert is condescending to his audience, so I didn't find those moments grating. Instead they just kind of made me smile/chuckle to myself. On the flipside, the stakes are HIGH in this book, and the story does not shy away from that. (spoilers: an entire city is annihilated, and the devastation is not just glossed over)
The illustrations complement the story and world Probert builds up SO well. From scenery to character, it comes together very nicely.
I like how wide the cast is. Although we spend a lot of time with our two main characters (Bea and Cad), the breadth of the cast makes this feel more epic in scale (specifically thinking of the riders/guards who rode out to mount a rescue effort)
What I Didn't Like
This book feels like it wants to examine some hidden dark lore (like, say, something that changes the character's perspectives on their goals), but doesn't actually do that. All of the foreshadowing is laid down, but kind of left there for the duration of this book. Having read the rest of the series, I know that those elements are further examined, but I would've liked to see just a smidge of that complexity in this book as well.

Lightfall is my current favorite kids / tween graphic novel series. If you've never read one of these, go read book one, The Girl & The Galdurian. Everything about it is beautiful, and it makes me wish my now-adult daughter still let me read to her. It's a fantasy adventure about two friends, Bea and Cad, trying to stop a giant bird from destroying all of the lights (think mini-suns) of their world. Bea's cat, Nimm, accompanies them on their quest, plus others are often around, too. Caution: spoilers ahead.
Lightfall Book 2: Shadow of the Bird by Tim Probert. Harper Alley, 2022. 9780062990488. 256pp.
After getting a note from Bea's gramps and learning more about both the Restless Sleeper (Kest, that giant bird) and Irpa (their planet), Bea and Cad set off to either stop Kest or find another of the ancient beings that created Irpa or maybe both. It's high stakes with shadow creatures, mass evacuations, and giant lights falling from the sky. Not to worry, though; Bea is super brave, and Cad has a huge sword, plus their friends help out. (And the ending is my favorite kind, dark enough for me to love it but not without hope.)
Lightfall Book 3: The Dark Times by Tim Probert. Harper Alley, 2024. 9780063080904. 256pp.
I thought this might be the final volume in the series but good news, it's not!
In a last-ditch effort to save their planet, Bea and Cad head for The Citadel of Knowledge. That's right, a library! I assume you don't need to know more to get you to read this. But if I was pitching this to my daughter, I'd also tell her there's a giant bat-like being at the heart of the story in this volume. (They love bats.)

março e equinócio de outono
Tumblr media

Comics Review: ‘Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian’
Tumblr media
Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian by Tim Probert My rating: 5 of 5 stars A forgetful porcine sorcerer goes missing. A three-toed, goggle-eyed explorer combs through forestland, over mountain peaks, and through sundered valleys in search of an extinct people. A human girl with paralyzing anxiety packs a rucksack full of honey rolls and gazes at the ever-bright sky overhead. In one tiny corner of the land of Irpa, curiosity is afoot and adventure is around every corner. LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN is a beautiful graphic novel. Extravagant and punctilious detail and vibrant color frame a simple but effective tale of loss, wonder, and fear, all from the perspective of an adolescent girl in a funky and fantastical realm. Beatrice's adoptive grandfather, a pig apothecary, leaves the village when he recalls an ancient promise that might have met an unsavory fate. The old porker is a tad forgetful, so it's hard to say whether this inciting incident is less valid than circumstances can warrant. Whatever the case, young Bea fears for her grandpa and sets off to find or help or save him. Problematically, Bea's not an adventurer. Which means she'll need the sword-swinging bravado of a kind-hearted stranger if she's going to survive. Of the numerous graphic novels on the market about children embarking through the strange and frightful with naught but the clothes on their back, LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN is exquisite. The supporting cast is a quirky and perfect fit: reptilian bandits, a packrat thief, a dinosaur barkeep, black-feathered bird assassins bearing heavy blades and dark intention. And in terms of the setting, Bea's journey through the land of Irpa is ripe: verdant, layered forests populated by mossy deer; underground waterfalls guarded by whispering, enchanted skulls; the interface of rocky mountainside and overgrown pasture, occupied by an immense, if lonely bone-carved statue of an ancient, nameless king. While the adventure Bea sets upon is generally confined to the realm of the ordinary, the theater in which she must surmount this ordinariness is delightful. Bea's quest to locate her wandering grandfather, while crucial to nudging the book into motion, is the least interesting part of the whole narrative. Bea's companion, Cadwallader, is the last of his people, and it behooves the two to figure out what happened to the kind, bulbous warrior race before too long (it appears the Galdurians' ancient nemesis has resurfaced). Similarly, as Bea leaves her home for an extended period, for the first time, she confronts the awkward and unusual history of the land of Irpa, relearning how the sun was lost, how artificial light now populates the continent, and how all of the strange and different species of intelligent creatures now call Irpa their home. LIGHTFALL: THE GIRL & THE GALDURIAN takes an enviable approach to storytelling: beginning with the lowest barrier of entry, then slowly and deliberately expanding the scope of adventure to include whatever pings the protagonist's curiosity. Sometimes this means diving into Bea's ardent struggle with her fragile mental health and sometimes this means partnering with Cad to field a new supply kit from a few roadside hucksters. All in all, the diversity of excitement and emotion is vast, and readers will enjoy the color, the noise, the newness, the unusualness, and the uncertainty native to navigating all of the dangerous spaces in-between.

Shadow of the Bird (Lightfall #2) by Tim Probert
4.5 ancient evils out of 5.
Second installment in the Lightfall series, which I recommend to anyone who wants a good classic fantasy adventure with super interesting world-building and Ghibli vibes! See this post for a synopsis of the first book. Basically, two unlikely friends must prevent the world's lights (basically huge lamps that substitute for the sun) from being snuffed out by an ancient evil. VERY interesting world, and Probert definitely does not shy away from making the high stakes of the story felt by the reader.
Review under the cut!
Wow. Everything I liked in the first book was even better in this book. Neighboring a now-extinguished city, the secondary cast of characters grapple with politicians jumping ship or refusing refugees as they try to escape their own city -- and the reach of sun-swallowing Kest, an emblem of darkness. At the same time, the two main characters Bea and Cad are steadfast in their mission to stop Kest...or are they? Bea's hesitations as she learns about Kest, the Galdurians, and the history that's been buried since Kest's defeat are so subtle and well-done; usually, main characters have a very obvious and usually immediate moment of moral decision, but Bea visibly grapples with everything she learns along the journey. Probert so deftly weaves Kest's perspective into Bea's, with the visions, Lorgon's reluctant revelations, and the Arsai plot that her conflict about her mission feels realistic in a way that I feel a lot of fiction doesn't get convincingly right. The ending gave me the warm fuzzies and made me love redemption arcs AND corruption arcs all over again. Can't wait to read the third book.

Along the path - Daring Advances
Male Commander/Daeran, first kiss AO3 ~~~ Drezen, Lamashan 13, 4715 The soft wide seat cushion shielded them from the cold of the ground while the battlements of the city walls kept them hidden from prying eyes. He felt the warmth radiating from the candlestand behind him, but even stronger from a place deep within his chest. Daeran gestured in his natural elegance, punctuating his speech with vivid merriment while he answered his question about the events of his day with a small anecdote about a servant’s mishap with an order of Galdurian wine and his ideas on how to proceed with the five unexpected crates. There was not a trace of his usual sharpness in his words. His comments lacked their biting edge and he seemed utterly at ease. As it happened so often, Salvadore found himself captivated by his words, entranced by his voice, wishing he could freeze this moment and stay in it forever. “So, here we are, alone, at this utterly insignificant, tedious business meeting,” Daeran finished his story and came back to what he refused to call a date. “Would you be so kind as to suggest a conversation starter? We need something boring and practical to talk about. Boring and practical, as you know, is not exactly my forte.” Salvadore raised a brow, although more in amusement than in irritation, hoping for the insolent count that he didn’t mean to call him well-versed in the field; or well, at least not in the first part of it, in terms of practical, he was superior, indeed. “Army logistics,” he joined Daeran’s little game and suggested something that should qualify. It was his own least favorite part of the Crusade management, mainly since no one in the sector seemed to be vaguely competent or capable of following through with his orders. “A fine choice,” Daeran answered, as expected. “This topic is boring and complex enough that two people who are completely uninterested in each other could spend an evening discussing it. In fact, I do have some understanding of logistics.” And therefore, you are now the proud owner of five crates of Galdurian wine instead of five bottles? Salvadore didn’t interrupt him with the mocking question, but he was sure Daeran could read it on his face. Gracefully ignoring his amused expression, he continued: “– sometimes it takes a great deal of effort to get the goods you need shipped from distant parts of Golarion. So, get ready to listen to my lecture on the best companies specializing in magical teleportation services. I must alert you in advance – the list is quite long. It consists of around … two dozen enterprises. With all their terms and conditions, including their pricing policies …” Should Daeran hope to actually bore him, he was tremendously mistaken. If anything, a list of companies specializing in magical teleportation services was exactly what they needed to finally improve the logistic situation. There only was one problem: He definitely didn’t want to deepen this topic right here and now and Daeran knew it all too well, toying with him as usual. Soft snowflakes got caught in his hair, shimmering like molten gold in the shine of the candles’ light. It was tousled as if it had decided to join the levity and lighthearted freedom of the moment. He yearned to sink his hand into those soft, irresistible curls, feel them around his fingers like the finest silk, smell the scent of wild herbs and roses … Gods, he had dreamed about it for too long, of how this insufferable man would feel captured in his arms, trembling at his touch, breathing his name. He wanted him. He wanted him so much the sensation grew into a hot tearing in his very core. “Are you absolutely positive you don’t want me to stop now?” It was difficult not to drown in the view of his angelic face, not to sink too deep in the gleaming of his eyes, sparkling in mocking joy, or to lose himself while watching those wide, impertinent lips, adorned with a smug little smile. “I think I know one way,” he answered, voice low and with quiet determination. So?, his mischievous eyes seemed to ask in silent taunting, until, without further hesitation, he gave into the fierce desire. Cupping the count’s head – heaven, hsi hair felt even softer than in his imagination –, he claimed his lips in a demanding kiss. Daeran held back. Motionless and disinterested, he refused to return the kiss. His heart dropped. Just when he wanted to retreat, preparing an agonizing, humiliating apology, Daeran kissed back with vigorous passion, pulling him closer with his hands around the collar of his coat. Salvadore melted against him. Relief shot through his veins, a hint of anger, and the renewed eagerness to finally explore those irresistible lips. Daeran opened his mouth to meet his tongue with his, gently flicking it in a most enticing way. A quiet sound left his throat, causing him to deepen the kiss further. When they parted after a long blissful moment, Daeran moved closer ever so slightly to take his hand. The small touch left him trembling inside, overly aware of the intimate tenderness. “I wonder if I shall come to regret this? You’re dangerous, I know it.” Now it was for him to smile, more than pleased about the statement. But as much as a part of him enjoyed this hint of fear, to be seen like this, he wanted nothing more than for Daeran to finally trust him. Once more he closed the distance, this time to move his fingers through his golden hair, not hiding his devotion, not hiding his strong affection. “I’m no danger to you. Stop running away from me.” Something in Daeran’s face seemed to soften. “No more running,” he promised. His heart pounded hard in his chest when he raised his hand to his lips. Then, his expression now sincere and without a hint of mockery, Daeran leaned forward and captured his lips in another passionate kiss.
