Would you be able to write some move of what Ben and Gwil’s first date in the original story was like?
(if you all recall, Gwil and Ben’s first date took place at the end of Chapter 38 — with Rami and Joe in attendance! ha, they had to chaperone the boys, lol)
Rami and Joe fall back, letting Gwil and Ben walk ahead of of them towards the table.
“Here, let me,” Gwil says, reaching out to pull Ben’s chair out for him.
“Oh, thank you,” Ben says, sounding genuinely surprised. He sits down, and shifts the chair in towards the table, glancing back at Joe with a bit of a nervous smile, but Joe just grins back and gives him a thumbs up. Gwil sits down next to Ben, shrugging off his jacket. As Ben starts to take his off, Gwil helps him out of it, smoothing it down over the back of Ben’s chair, giving him a smile before he looks down at the table. As Rami and Joe take their seats across from them, Ben keeps his eyes on Gwil. “Have you been here before?” Ben asks, and then he blinks a couple times, realizing that no, Gwil has hardly spent any time in London at all, and he’s certainly not gone out to dinner here without Ben hearing about it.
Gwil doesn’t correct Ben or point out his error, he just smiles brightly at him, shaking his head. “No, I haven’t,” he says, picking up his menu. “Have you? Gosh, I bet you’ve been to— to all the restaurants in London.”
Ben smiles a bit, and glances over at Joe and Rami, who are both obviously watching them, not even pretending to distract themselves with conversation. “Uh, yes, I— quite a few,” Ben admits. “But no, not here, actually.”
Their server comes to take their drink order, and then Gwil shifts a bit in his chair, turning towards Ben, sharing the menu with him. “Would you like to share a starter?” he asks. “Or we can get two, and share both?”
“Yes,” Ben says, nodding. “I— that sounds lovely.” He meets Gwil’s eyes with a smile, and then looks at the menu. “What sorts of things sound good,” he says softly.
Gwil looks at Ben, studying the curve of his face, the look of interest as Ben scans the menu, and then Gwil glances over at Rami and Joe, who just give him another smile. “It all looks…delicious,” Gwil says, looking back at Ben. “I— is there anything you don’t like?” he asks. “Or…allergies?”
Joe makes a soft sound, and Ben and Gwil both look over at him to see Rami shaking his head, glaring at Joe, while Joe just smiles. “What?” Joe asks. “Fine. Ignore us.” He looks at Rami, smiling. “What?” he asks, and Rami just sighs, picking up his menu.
“No, no allergies,” Ben says. “I— I’m not terribly picky.” Joe makes another noise, but they ignore him this time.
“This sounds quite good,” Gwil says, pointing to saganaki on the menu. “I’ve never had that, I wouldn’t mind trying.”
“Do you want to get that with some kalamari?” Ben asks, and Gwil smiles, nodding. “Okay,” Ben says, and he smiles.
“Yum,” Joe says loudly, licking his lips, and Rami sighs.
“Joe, will you hush,” Rami says. “They’re trying to be romantic!”
“Then why are we here?” Joe asks. “I can’t talk because they’re on a date? We’re on a date! It’s a double date!”
“It’s fine,” Ben says, “Joe’s right. What are you two getting to eat?”
“I don’t know about a starter,” Rami says, “but I really want galaktobouriko for dessert.”
“What is that?” Ben asks, looking back at the menu. “God, yum.”
“What are you getting to eat?” Joe asks, looking at Gwil. “I’m thinking lamb.”
“Maybe red snapper,” Gwil says. “Sounds alright.”
Joe clears his throat, and then leans forward across the table. He curls his finger towards Gwil, and Gwil leans in towards him. “Do you want fish breath for your first date?” he asks quietly, and Gwil glances at Ben, then back at Joe.
“I don’t know, is that bad?” Gwil whispers.
Joe shrugs. “Might be,” he says. “Just think about it.” He sits back, and gives Rami a quick smile.
Their server returns with their drinks, and takes their orders, and then Rami smiles around the table. “I’m looking forward to the film,” he says. “Exciting.”
“Creepy,” Joe says. “I’m convinced he’s just watching all these movies and reading all these books just so he can plan the perfect murder.”
“Wouldn’t surprise me at all,” Gwil says, taking a sip of his drink. He looks at Ben, and then glances over at Rami, who gives him an encouraging smile and a nod. “Uh, do you like mysteries?” Gwil asks, looking at Ben. “Or, what sorts of…what are your favourites?”
“Oh,” Ben says, smiling, turning a bit towards Gwil. “Well, you know I liked Rebecca, that’s one of my favourites.”
“Right,” Gwil says. “That’s, yes, a mystery, of course.”
“I don’t love being scared,” Ben says, “but, well, Joe’s made me watch all sorts of films over the years. I like historical films, uh— sometimes they’re not accurate, but I enjoy them anyway.”
“We should watch Braveheart,” Joe says. “Ooh yeah, I think— yes, please.”
“What’s that about?” Gwil asks.
Ben looks at Joe, and then realizes that Joe’s leaving it to him to answer. “Oh, William Wallace,” Ben says.
“Oh, yes,” Gwil says, “I’d— I’d like to see that. He’s fascinating. You know, it’s likely he had Welsh roots.” He takes another drink. “Are there any good films about the Welsh?”
Ben’s mouth falls open a bit, and he looks over at Joe, who makes a bit of a face.
“Besides How Green Was My Valley…” Joe trails off. “You know what, Gwil? You let me— I’ll handle this, I’ll find one.”
“Sorry,” Ben says softly, leaning in towards Gwil. “But leave it to Joe, he’ll find loads, I’m sure.”
“I look forward to it,” Gwil says. He nods, looking at Ben. “And we could…watch them together?”
Ben looks at Gwil, and then nods happily. “Yes, of course,” he says.
“Alright,” Gwil says, smiling back. “Good.”

With over 50 picturesque villages and many more pigeon houses (the total is well over 1000), Tinos is an island to discover in a leisurely way over many days. The landscape morphs from lush vineyards into looping coastal roads, barren boulder land, and deep marble quarries. Within just a ten minute drive, its villages and beaches vary dramatically too; from Kolibithra, the surfers’ beach which boasts good waves in the spring months, to the tiny village of Volax at the heart of the island, distinguished by the poetry inscribed on the outside of its pretty, geranium shrouded homes.
Owing to its varied topography, the island also happens to be one of the best destinations in the Cyclades for food. So much so, that popular Athenian restaurants like Theio Tragi (Holy Goat – Tinos has lots of goats..) abandon the city in the summer months, setting up shop on the island. Look to the following guide for the ultimate spots to sample some of Tinos’ very best gastronomic gems.
Breakfast in Tinos
If you can save yourself for a saccharine treat, head to the village of Pyrgos – known for its marble quarries and its generations of marble workers – for breakfast in the village’s most popular kafeneion (café). O Megalos Kafenes at the very heart of Pyrgos serves up (tried and tested) the very best galaktobouriko on the island. This semolina custard pastry with a heavy sprinkling of cinnamon, swilled down with a tar-thick Greek coffee is fuel for a morning of exploration.
Throw good manners to the wind…
Sparrows fly in and out of all the open windows above the heads of customers while inside, marble tables, old family portraits of the owners’ family members and ancient grandfather clocks nod to a bygone era.
Vineyard Tour in Tinos
Forget tangy Retsina, Tinos is fast becoming the Cycladic destination to head to for good Greek wine. Blessed with fertile land and a generation of wine makers returning to their homes to foster centuries-old traditions of grape growing, Tinos now boasts seven producers with up to five labels each. The varieties local to the island range from a fresh Asyrtiko (a refreshingly dry white) and the dark and deeply spicy marvotragano, which ages phenomenally.
If you can find it, head to the hidden village of Tripotamos (genuinely designed as a labyrinth so that its houses could not be seen and ransacked by pirates in the middle ages) to The Cross Roads Inn for a wine tour, tasting and lunch hosted at their own vineyard just above the village. Their label, X-bourgo, is named after the towering granite formation Exomvourgo Hill that serves as Tripotamos’ dramatic backdrop and hides a ransacked Venetian fortress at its peak.
Lunch in Tinos
For lunch with a view and an expertly composed seafood menu from perhaps the island’s most popular foodie spot, look to To Thalassaki. On the beach at Ormos Isternion on the south west of the island, this restaurant takes bookings in advance and will likely not have a table for those without a reservation.
Expect Mediterranean flavour with a refined twist. Smoked herring salad with a dainty garnish of red onion and dill as an absolute must-order here, as are the marinated anchovies on a bed of beans and the hearty penne (order it to share) topped with bottarga. There must be room made for dessert, which absolutely should be the mastika ice cream with loukoumi (Turkish delight) – a genius balancing act of aromatic pine and syrup-sweet rosewater.
Dinner in Tinos
Journey up to the village of Aetofolia past sci-fi feeling boulderland to dine at the family run taverna, Sta Fys’Aera. Sourcing everything locally, the taverna serves up meze dishes in a laid-back atmosphere but tired and outdated this is not. The dishes served here, though against a rough and ready feeling backdrop, are not your standard tavern fare.
Expect delicately spiced louza (the Cyclades’ most loved smoked pork), healing wild greens tea neatly served up in a teapot as a side to your wild greens order and the most satiating courgette salad you will ever have the pleasure of sampling. Wash it all down with a glass of mavrotragano or the taverna’s own raki.
To book a villa on Tinos, contact us. Given the culinary delights of the island though, this might be one of the islands where you don’t need to book a chef!
