What's your favorite episode of Merlin so far? Who's your favorite character?

My most Favorite is S2E2 The Once and Future Queen. The way my jaw dropped when I realized it was a disguised royalty episode I love those!!! Jousting! Reminds me of a Knight’s Tale. It sets such a good foundation for his relationship with Gwen it’s so sweet and I love seeing Arthurs sensitive side away from his fathers influence. Also the love triangle I wrote in my head really pops off in this episode, it’s thee episode for me it characterizes all of them so well.

Has the all the best parts of Arthurian legend to me. Unicorns, labyrinths, trials, the sea, chalices. Just wonderful. Thee Merther episode. Season 1 and we already see Merlin crying over Arthurs body!!! Insanity. I love Arthur character growth episodes.

S4E7 His fathers son

Arthur saying “I’m prepared to face all manners of horrors but if you think I’m willing to share this bed with you” to Merlin on his way to breakup with Gwen. If you interpret it as a deliberate parallel, that was his breakup with Merlin. He pushed Merlin away so aggressively here I think it’s my defining canon Merther moment cause like? No one mentioned sleeping in the same bed my lord why were YOU thinking about that.

S4E6 A servant of two masters

Excellent episode title. Really funny episode, we love Old Merlin. Morgana vs Merlin fight ftw. Gwen and Gaius teamup. After the way Arthurs been behaving Merlin deserves to take him out. Lots of funny moments with the Knights.

As for my favorite character…. Arthur🙈🤷🏼‍♀️ what can I say I have simple tastes and he’s the main guy so the audience is given a lot of information about him to work with. but I love all of them, all the characters bring something to the show :)

I keep trying to figure out why I’m still so irked by (a) what Tamsyn Muir is doing with John and (b) the fandom reaction to John (despite the fact that I’ve accepted, at least intellectually, that she means for him to represent both the Father and the Son and therefore he is not simply meant to be: a Christian projection of Christianity’s flaws onto the “God of the Old Testament” that needs to be fixed by Jesus (supersessionism FTW!)).

Warning for me spending a lot of time hand-wringing about something that probably isn’t that important and possibly me putting my whole foot in my mouth and sticking my nose where it probably doesn’t belong. Simultaneously! And possibly incoherently! [In case someone unexpected stumbles across this (and the previous paragraphs weren't clear enough) I feel the need to clarify: this isn't a callout post for Tamsyn Muir, this is me trying to work through and analyze my complex feelings about her work and the fandom response to it. As such, it may contain statements that are presumptuous and you shouldn’t read this post if that’s likely to upset you.]

I think there are a disparate things going on that continue to grate. I think one of them is that, as a Jewish Atheist, I don’t consider God to be real and therefore I don’t consider him responsible for Christianity’s sins (e.g. imperialism/colonialism, child sexual abuse, etc). I consider *Christians* to be responsible for it, so to have Jod be simultaneously a “Christian” Emperor, Space-Pope, and a diagetically unambiguously real God all at once...it feels kinda weird that they are all being conflated/merged into one character, since I only consider two of those three to be real and therefore accountable for the violence of Christianity (obviously there have been many popes and Christian emperors, I’m treating them as one for simplicity). I also wouldn’t want to blame Jesus for this, like, yes! let’s blame the Jewish man murdered by the Roman Empire for the Roman Empire hijacking the religion he inspired and using it as a tool of Imperialism, and then the British Empire also using it as a justification for Imperialism, etc!! And since John is also a Jesus figure, this is another angle where the choices seem weird, because I keep going “is she trying to blame Jesus for it?!” even though I know that that’s stupid and simplistic. Of course, if she genuinely believes/believed in God-as-told-by-Catholicism, then it makes sense that she would blame him (and Jesus) for Christianity’s sins--he’s an all-powerful figure! If he’s real and he didn’t want Christians to commit evil, why didn’t he intercede? But for me it just feels a little like absolving individual Christians of their choices

So: I don’t much like seeing a Christian author hang the responsibility for Christian violence on the Christian God/Jesus because it feels like its absolving the Christian masses of how they interpreted God and used God to justify violence. And I’m not entirely sure that this is what she’s trying to do...but it does seem that this is how its being received by the fandom, many of whom hate Jod with maximum vitriol (I am still bitter about the fact that the first time I dared venture into the John Gaius tag, I only made it to the third page before I  found a long character-hate screed that end with the writer hoping he would be tortured forever. I will always be bitter.) but often don’t hate the other Ninth-house characters with near as much passion. Abigail, and Magnus, and Harrow, and Gideon, etc. are typrically all approached with a degree of sympathy despite being implicated in the Nine Houses’ colonialism--they are not the people at whom the buck stops, and they are actively being prevented from understanding their world accurately by Jod, who is lying to the entire Empire.

Additionally, because I am a Jew and therefore a member of a group that has historically been one of European Christianity’s primary victims, I feel some amount of...idk, resonance? kinship? (is it presumptuous to say this? god, probably, but I hope any readers will bear with me while I try to explain further) with aspects of the Māori experience as victims of Christianity. Like, obviously there is a lot of difference between the experience of being Māori and subject to colonization and being Jewish and subject to Christian persecution, perhaps there is more different than there is similar, but both communities are still in the “screwed over by white Christian society” camp.

This in turn means that it feels kinda upsetting to see someone who is probably white (or Pākehā, more specifically--caveats on this in the next paragraph) creating a Māori man as a symbol of the moral transgressions of Catholicism and Imperialism. To put it another way, I probably would have rage-quit the series if John was revealed to be a Jewish character (who converted to Catholicism) instead of a Māori one. Maybe that means I have hopelessly plebeian (or pedestrian) tastes, but I would not be okay with a Christian writer doing with a once-Jewish character what Muir is doing with this Māori one (although, I suppose “Jewish person dies and becomes Christian God” is literally Jesus’s arc, so). So I’m kinda in a constant state of “what! the fuck! does everybody else know! that I don’t! that makes them comfortable with this!” and “maybe I’m just being absurdly rigid and dogmatic?!?”.

But to be fair, It is entirely possible that Muir could actually be Māori, and that she is simply private about her ethnicity/ancestry, which is her right. I agree that she has a right to privacy! And yet, this means I can’t put my anxiety to rest, because it puts Muir in a state analogous to a quantum superposition--because I can’t make the measurement, she is both Māori and not Māori at the same time. I could just cut the Gordian knot by saying “anyone can write what they want, but how they handle it is open to criticism, and one’s ability to handle fraught material is not solely determined by ones identity markers” thereby making her identify irrelevant (which I suspect is her view on the matter) but I can’t simply say that because while its true that anyone has that right and that perhaps identify should be irrelevant...that doesn’t mean they are entitled to me as audience and there are certain narratives I don’t want to read (if the makes my tastes hopelessly plebeian/pedestrian, so be it!), and I have to decide if I’m willing to risk reading Alecto the Ninth without knowing if Alecto the Ninth is going to confirm that this is the narrative she is writing. I think my best bet is to walk away from the Gordian knot by saying ‘I don’t want to read Alecto the Ninth’ (or ‘I won’t read it until someone with my same intuitions about this says they think its fine’). And yet, I just kinda keep spinning...somehow this doesn’t lay to rest this issue. I suppose its because I really do want to read it, and I keep trying to bargain for an outcome I can tolerate by reiterating the argument about why she would never write my worst-case (or adjacent) scenario. But I can’t control what Muir writes, so there isn’t any point in endlessly mentally bargaining with the universe. Its also likely that I don’t really believe “I don’t have to read this, I don’t owe her anything”. Because she’s right in that interview, marginalized authors really ARE put under greater scrutiny...and therefore I feel bad about refusing to read something because “it might offend me”. Obviously the loss of my single purchase for AtN won’t make or break anything, but I still have the sense that I’m being part of a problem.

And the stupidest part is, intellectually I can’t really bring myself to believe that Muir would be so crass as to make a Māori character as a scapegoat/symbol of Chrisitianity’s sins (or the British Empire’s sins) so he can be brutally punished for the catharsis of the (probably mostly white) audience. But I have Anxiety! The Condition and I also don’t really trust my own intuitions about this. Maybe its my judgment that’s borked, or there is an angle I’m overlooking.

And then of course there is the problem that I find some of (what I presume are) John’s emotional/self-esteem problems painfully relatable (which may be a sign that I’m just projecting) and therefore am doing a bad job of maintaining separation and so taking everyone’s hatred of him as judgment of myself (despite the fact that I have never done anything nearly as bad as John). So...that part is fun.

you do such a great job of world building in a condensed but detailed way; it’s so easy to feel completely engrossed in the story and the characters only a few lines in.  and you have such a recognizable flair to your descriptions and dialogue that so *perfectly* suits the historical/royal/fantasy tropes we’ve come to love from you 🤗

of course I was a sucker for this because Chan, and princess MC with a strong will of her own, and allusions to Merlin !! (umm are you inside my brain lol 😅) but Chan’s character was expertly tailored to his traits: honest, kind, strong but self-deprecating; he fit perfectly in this story.  I loved your hints of foreshadowing with the herb gathering and just how genuinely Chan and MC grew into loving each other… and I may also have read the “naughty, naughty girl” line around 883 times, but who’s counting 🤷🏼‍♀️

I know it was tough to get through this one with how busy things have been, but you really made it worth it and I’m so proud of and happy for you!! I will definitely be coming back to read this one again and again ❤️

 Okay, so...basically,after discovering the DrawiingWiffWaffles YouTube channel and obsessing over it for the past month or so, I found the video where she was talking about the Ohuhu markers and comparing them to the Copics.  I’ve never deal with alcohol based markers before, but after watching that comparison, I realized that I kinda...liked the idea?  Like, the fact that you can basically shade with the same marker after you let it dry just...appealed to me.  Plus, they were like :25 for a set of 40, so I figured I could splurge a little on myself.  So these are the experiments I did with them.

Okay, the first one is clearly not a marker piece.  But I was having fun prepping for the markers’ arrival that I decided to do a piece in colored pencil to tide me over.  And, well, I had never really done a picture of just Kai and Gabby.  So yeah, just a fun little girl BFF picture, just because.

This was my first test, and OF COURSE it’ll be of Kai and Dylan.  Surprised?  Ha!  I don’t know - it just made sense to me, because I feel like I need to do more of these.  Even though technically, I actually need to do more of the other colors.  Um, this was an experiment in blending?  Sure, let’s go with that.  I couldn't quite get the two blues to blend, and so I decided to use the colorless blender and HA, mistake.  The thing blend like crazy.  Like, the markers didn’t bleed through the paper onto my drawing surface EXCEPT when I used to blender.  Yeah, not using that again, EVAR.  Also discovered black was a bad idea, but whatever.  It still turned out INCREDIBLY awesome, and I love it.  SO.  MUCH.  Me likey merkers.

NATURALLY, I also had to do an Aerona piece.  Because I HAVE TO.  This one was a test of one way the YouTuber colors, which is she puts down the marker than then inks.  I used a waaayyy too dark blue for Aerona, discovering the perfect shade WELL after the fact.  Which makes me very mad.  Thankfully, the picture scanned lighter than the actual picture, so it doesn’t look too bad here.  It was an interesting technique, and I like the results more than I thought I would.  Except I screwed up with the hair a bit, coloring more than I was supposed to.  I did the same thing with her top, but whatever,  It’s easy to look past that to the awesomeness that is Aerona.

And finally, because the Aerona experiment didn’t go as I intended, I decided to do ANOTHER Aerona piece, except I didn’t want to do a full picture.  The original idea was just busts of Aerona and Gaius there, because I figured hey, why not.  But then I realized I had a bit more space and added Dr. Stravos.  AND THEN figured I’d go for broke and all the Helian characters, adding Dr. Llewellyn in the mix as well.  Unfortunately, he turned out more orange than he actually is, because with 40 colors, I obviously didn’t have the right shade for him.  ;P  And of course, it was while I was doing this picture that I discovered I somehow missed a blue, which would have been PERFECT for Aerona. (That blue being the blue in Dr. Llewellyn’s shirt.)  But whatever.   I actually really like how everything turned out here.  So at least this one was a success.

All of them were a success, actually.  I really like how they all look!  Merkers FTW!!  Yay!

Posting a few Miscellaneous Tidbits, which will hopefully entertain y’all and help me feel Accomplished so I get things rolling, so to speak ^^;;

Below, some snippets from Distaff, Auxiliaries, Epic Crossover RP of DOOM, The Caladrius (Phoenixverse), an upcoming Outline (not LGSaC, this is The Mask of Zorro Fusion No One One Person Asked For) and Precipice.

(Please note that the Precipice segment is actually from what will probably be broken off into a sequel after a six-year timejump following Arc 7, so it is pretty spoilery. It’s also the last in the document. Also, all of these except the ECRPOD bits are drafts and subject to change.)

1. Distaff (this actually comes from the next chapter; which is in part delayed because there’s like twelve things obi-wan has to do before he leaves for Utapau which is the next thing that happens soooooo yeah.)

“But she’s not in any danger?” Padme had already said so, but…

She shook her head, then paused. “Not immediate or direct danger, anyway. Not from--not from what I know.”

Which was fair. Anakin remained alarmingly reckless--though, come to think of it, she hadn’t actually slipped off to race or anything of the like more than once or twice since their return to Coruscant. Unusual, and an important piece of the puzzle, he was certain.

But even with that, the full picture remained--elusive.

“She’s going to tell you,” Padme went on. “She just...she loves you, and she needs you, and she doesn’t want...I think she’s afraid of losing you.”

He paused, letting that sink in for a moment. “There is...there is nothing she could say that would make that happen.”

“I know,” she said. “And I’m pretty sure she does, too. Deep down. It’s just...there’s knowing, and then there’s knowing, and she doesn’t want to disappoint you.”

“No, Masters, I haven’t yet been able to get a sample. But this boy, he’s…” Obi-Wan shook his head. “I’ve never sensed someone so strong in the Force in my entire life.”

“What is it you intend to do?” Master Windu asked.

“I think I should bring him to Coruscant,” Obi-Wan replied, knowing how radical a thing he was proposing. “To the Temple.”

“Trained as a Jedi, you wish for him?” Yoda asked, arching an eyebrow.

He took a deep breath. “Yes. I know he’s--he’s twelve, approximately, he’s too old by any measure. But...this boy, he’s...I’m concerned about the possible ramifications of not bringing him into the fold.”

“What do you mean?” Master Mundi asked, leaning forward a little.

Obi-Wan winced internally. He had avoided speaking on the subject--avoided thinking about it, insofar as he could--since the Naboo Crisis just over three years before. So many things, so many emotions it was so hard to release--his master’s death. His Trials. His bizarre status, as the only Jedi in a thousand years who had fought and killed a--

There was no help for it now. And, as surely as he knew anything, Obi-Wan knew that Anakin Skywalker was important, and that it was his responsibility to make sure the child wasn’t...misused. “If I found him, Masters,” Obi-Wan said quietly, “the Sith might, as well.”

3. Epic Crossover RP of DOOM (three for the price of one because we think we’re hilarious)

1) "Yeah, that would be a kidnapping, I think," Leia said. "Someone tried to kidnap me once."

"And did flamethrowers happen?" Tony asked.

"Sadly, no," Leia said. "I was four, I didn't have one. But biting happened!"

"Good enough," Tony said. "Baby, if someone tries to kidnap you, bite 'em to the bone."

"Damn right," Leia said cheerfully. "It wasn’t a big deal, in the end--just this jackass who wanted Uncle Owen to buy into some sort of protection racket."

"Wow," Tony said. "From what I know of your Uncle Owen, that did not end well for him."

"Uncle Owen didn't do anything," she said. "Aunt Beru was closer to the rifle."

2) "Yeah, you're gonna need working wire first," Tony said, from the doorway. "Also, hi. Baltar, do not steal my lab partner."

"I am not your lab partner," Bruce said, automatically.

"And I'm not stealing anyone," Gaius said.

"Just borrowing," Caprica said wryly.

"Collaborating, darling."

"Hi, Tony," Ahsoka said, since apparently they didn't teach Padawans manners anymore. Nevermind that one of them was hers.

3) Tony scowled, and Bruce laughed. "More or less," he said, "but not one you can make with a screwdriver and also, we don't use the i word in this house after the toaster incident."

Caprica arched an eyebrow. "Toaster incident?"

"Well, the first toaster incident," Bruce amended. "The second toaster incident was a little less… fiery."

"Fuck you," Tony said. "I can't help it if I sleep-engineer sometimes, these things just happen."

"I know, right?" Anakin said. "Sometimes, I build the most incredible things that way. ...and sometimes Rex wakes me up with a fire extinguisher and yells at me about the med droid again."

4. The Caladrius (Phoenixverse)

Kellom made his way down to the rubble of Captivesgate, hoping that the explosive used might provide some useful details about these renegade mages and how the hell they had accomplished the impossible.

He was not, of course, so lucky as that.

“What do you mean, you haven’t found it?” he asked, maintaining surface calm only by a lifetime of military discipline.

“Just that, Highness,” the guard said. “There’s no traces of fire powder, or even black water. We even had an earth-mage go over the area, look for smaller bits we couldn’t see, and nothing.”

Which meant some sort of exotic or mage-born explosion. That much harder to trace.

“I see,” he said. “I’m going to take a look myself. You’re dismissed.” Not that  he doubted the man’s word, just that--well, sometimes it helped to get his own impressions. See things with his own eyes.

“Highness,” the guard said, and bowed and stepped aside to let him pass.

Timeline: the three routes, one will be picked depending on the thread and partner.

Description: Due to the sudden disappearance of the three children, Chrom took off to Mila Shrine to ask help from Naga who tells him of Anakos’ trip here and recruiting the three kids. Chrom waited for a while before he asks for Naga’s help in case Inigo and the others wanted time alone after the big battle. But when months passed by without any word of them, he went and decided to take upon Naga’s offer to send him to where they are but warned him that her influence s weak there so she will send him as far as she can, maybe wrong place wrong time but he did not falter. Accepting that, he went alone just in case what Naga told him happened. 

Once he reached the fate continent, his appearance was changed slightly to not be recognized by the trio in case it will cause him trouble (with Anakos.) His new appearance is dark-haired and green eyes and Falchion remained with him but advised not to use it unless it is necessary. Instead, he uses a lance blessed with Naga’s bless. 

Where he landed is nearby Nohr but not enough to get him inside the country and save him the trouble to sneak in without being caught by the guard. It was a long way until he managed to get inside.

 >>There are two paths; either Chrom gets to be someone’s retainer or just a soldier in the Nohr army or simply a rogue who will track the trio from the shadows.

The prince of Iris, Lowell is helping his older sister Emmalyn (again counterpart of Emmeryn). Iris country will not join in any fight unless they were threatened. In this time, Lowell has the same shepherds group (to some extent) called Vigilantes (yes, i am creative with the name but you got a better name help yeah? xDD) Lowell is the same as Chrom but a bit blunt than his counterpart.

Stahl - I didn’t know anyone, and my friend Neo told me to pick Stahl since he was an early unit to get and he was a nice guy. I love Stahl to bits, he’s such a sweet heart and I really don’t like the hate he gets because he is just ‘nice’…What’s wrong with being genuinely nice??? 

Chrom - I wanted to know why both Meg and Neo married him, and tried it out…It wasn’t my cup of tea as I see him as a best friend, but I can see why he is popular spouse! 

Lon’qu - Ahhh my Lonkie~ I loved him instantly when we were first introduced to him, and I knew who would be my husband in my second play through because it was hell on earth in my first play through…So many times I died, but yes I married him because he’s so adorable and so blunt LOL! I’m sorry I love him so much.

Gaius - Ah yes, my little shit haha. I accidentally killed him in my first play through, and I was dead set to get him, thank fuck I got him before Chrom killed him again, and I was so done with him on how he joined the shepherds, but none the less found him entertaining. When I married him to Sumia I was super curious of the support with the avatar, and gave it a shot. I used the avatar I married Chrom to, and married him…Oh my lord this guy is just a dork, and I love him too, no matter how many times I’m done with him. 

Olivia - Ahhh my waifu~!

Owain - My first child unit marriage! I was too impatient for Fates, and decided to marry him in Awakening…He is such a sweetie pie oh my god! I love him to bits also, he is a dork, but also genuine with his feelings! 

Fates:  

Asugi - I need to be a familiar face in Birthright, and when I decided to marry Gaius they announced Grey in Japan, so I was like ‘I know who I am marrying in Birthright!’. I don’t care what people say, I love his teenage voice, and he is still the lovable dork, though I have to be more like a mom than a wife at times. When I’m married to someone else in Birthright or Revelation, he’s out a lot and wants to visit me a lot lol. 

Xander - I didn’t know who to marry in Conquest, and my friend Neo suggested him to me because the personality I gave to my avatar is “mom of the army”, and since Xander is “dad of the army” it made sense! Xander is a protective man of his wife holy shit he just straight up murders enemies that harm my avatar and whenever I say ‘really Xander?’ he yells ‘FOR THE GLORY OF NOHR!’…Ask Neo ( @golden-eyed-servant ) and Meg ( @vallablooded ), they have heard him when we do phone calls! 

Ryoma - it made sense to marry the lobster prince too? Jokes aside, he had Chrom’s voice and I felt bad I had to leave him for a thief that liked sweets, so now I have a lobster husband hehehe.

Leo - I mean…He is such a dork and I wanted to give him love, so I married him. Forrest has dark teal hair and fucking works it. Magic family ftw. 

Takumi - Pineapple is so cute omgggg, especially when he’s your husband! He has more cheerleaders in his ‘team Takumi!’ now haha. The poor baby needs the love. 

Silas - I mean I married Stahl, so of course I married Silas. Of course I can tell the differences between the two, and Sofie is a sweetpea omg.

Odin - DARK MAGE FAMILY FTW! 

Saizo - Yeah I am also Asugi’s mom muwahaha! Jokes aside, Saizo is my favorite kind of male character, so of course I had to marry him…He’s incredibly ticklish fufufu.
