the end of the cleaver taps against the cutting board, muffled chopping really the only sound in her ears this early in the day. her wrist naturally follows the rolling motion as she continues to chop up scallions to top off this morning’s congee. her mother walks by with a wicker basket full of freshly washed greens, skirts moving air past soli’s ankles. the quiet bubble and boil of the water on the stove across the room lets her know it’s time to put the rice in.

the courtyard is quiet, there are only a few people in her family up at this hour - two of them currently preparing breakfast while her father dutifully goes to check on any news that may have come out from the nations and/or republic city. it’s a routine that is familiar and comfortable, and once she’s done helping her mother prep all the fragrant spices and vegetables she knows to make tea for her morning debrief with her father.

it’s without her mind in the motion that she dumps the pre-measured and washed rice into the large pot, covering it immediately after. stepping around her mother who is picking out wilted leaves from her bunch, her finger slides across the labelled stoneware, lingering on the peppermint. soli’s drawn to it for some reason, and she knows to trust her instincts at this point in her life.

a momentary pause. it’s so early in the morning, what is there to stress about?

the tea is steeped within minutes, and she carefully balances two empty teacups, other hand holding onto the handle of the kettle as she uses her foot to slide the kitchen’s door halfway shut. it’s an odd preference, as liya always get incredibly warm with it that way, but her mother has always run a bit cold. liya can’t really relate.

the air smells crisp today, but there’s the faintest hint of smoke. frowning, she spends some time with the thought, attempting to decipher through it. is it just someone else nearby starting their cooking fire earlier than usual? but no, that’s impossible - this doesn’t smell of wood and brick and stone, it smells acidic, vaguely metallic.

the air holds stories; it has memories - some only a few hours or minutes old.

soli’s walk stills when she sees that the door to her father’s study is completely closed. it’s always open to her for their morning tea. she’s the one that always closes it behind her.

with the toe of her shoe, she slides the door the slightest bit open, and then with lips pursed, she exhales a gentle breath, coaxing it open the rest of the way. when she enters, her father is deep in meditation, different items spread around him in disarray. this is not like him.

“news from the fire nation capital.”

she lowers herself down to the ground on her usual cushion gracefully. instead of kneeling, and sitting back on her legs as she usually does for their usual fifteen to twenty minute morning meetings, she lets her skirts settle around her as she sits cross-legged, a more comfortable position for a long conversation.

setting the kettle down first, her now freed up hand twists behind her back, fingers moving in an easy glide, the screen door behind her sliding completely closed. she moves the teacups from the tray to the table, allowing him to collect his thoughts, form his next sentences. 

“the fire lord is dead. assassinated.”

the bottom of the stone teacup being set on the wooden table sounds mighty loud against the vacuum of noise in her father’s study.

“as you can imagine, i will be embroiled in meetings in the coming days - weeks.”

she pours the tea, nodding slowly as her mind starts to plan what to pack. she thinks about the people she will need to find, the faces flashing behind her eyes - the ones she needs to reach out to, immediately.

“when the funeral announcements made and the details released, you will go in my stead and act as our representative.”

soli watches the steam drift from the top of her teacup, closing her eyes. the little gem of a jewel inside her pulses, and she inhales - deeply. the strong scent fills her nose and she breathes it in a little deeper, hoping it will fill her lungs and calm the rising tension in her limbs.

“attempt to create peace wherever you can when you go out of the island. for there is no way to keep it. at this time, it is completely shattered.”

soliya opens her eyes, and sees a solitary tea leaf starting to sink down to the bottom of her cup. must have gotten through the strainer.

for the first time since stepping into the study, she speaks, and for now she is calm.

“of course.”

"😋It was such a special weekend when Ga had chance to host a 3-generation family coming from the U.S.A. They came to join GA’s “Cooking like a Hanoian” class.

😍The class was so much fun and warm with endless stories shared among us. In the atmosphere filled with flavor smell of Pho broth, we had dinner together, but more than just a meal, it was a chance for GA to proudly talk about Vietnam’s history and tradition; about Hanoi Old Quarter; even about traditional herbs and treatment methods.

“The atmosphere today makes me feel like Thanksgiving at my home����‍👩‍👧‍👦!” What the boy said drove GA to surprise, but then, we were happy. It’s not simply a compliment, it made us know that our guests have truly enjoyed the process of cooking Pho and sharing stories, like real big family.
