unpop bllk opinion: Chigiri having his arc so soon was fine because his issue wasn't as complex as the other characters issues. Most of the other Bllk boys have issues where they feel like they have to prove themselves to be worthy, but Chigiri had already entered Blue Lock with a lot of self confidence in his abilities so his problem didn't involve that. He struggled with trying to find a reason to keep going because he already knew he was good at the game, not with "Am I worthy enough to even be here?" and that's also kinda why isagi was really harsh to him during their conversation.
And anyways, I just feel like if they built Chigiri's mystery up until a much later point, the pay off just wouldn't have been worth it compared to all the other issues everyone else is facing or whatever. Like it'd be disappointed to wonder what's going on Chigiri if we learned about it like...after we learned about Bachira or Reo or Nagi.
So I kind of get why he was the first we got to learn about since his issue isn't as complex and is pretty short (less writing involved and all that)
I do hope we get to see him score more goals in the future though, and I get why ppl think he's kinda boring now (because the curtains been unveiled and now he's just there lol)
Hmm… perhaps the word “early” is not right. When I say “early” when referring to Chigiri’s arc, I simply mean that we didn’t see enough of him pre-development. Chigiri’s arc involves a big personality change, and for that to feel impactful, the audience must first be invested in the previous personality. However, Chigiri’s mysterious/quiet side was only shown to us for a while. It was then quickly dismissed before the audience could get curious about him.
Like, there has to be suspense first. We get to appreciate something more if it’s done gradually and not all of a sudden.
Look at other character arcs involving a personality change: Eren from Attack on Titan, Leo from Pandora Hearts, and even Mob from MP100. Their stories are completely different and shouldn’t be compared with Chigiri’s, but I want to point out here that their personality change was so stark that people couldn’t help but reminisce about their previous personality. But for Chigiri, there’s none of that. It’s as if his mysterious side never even existed.
And since Isagi’s the protagonist, through whom we get to know other people’s stories, there should have been more interactions between him and Chigiri before the latter’s arc. You have to expect at least that for a character set as one of the main four in this series.
But before the set-up for Chigiri’s arc (which started when he and Isagi watched that footage together), we don’t even see them talking to each other. Nor have we seen Isagi at least commenting about Chigiri in his head. A simple thought of “why is this guy so uncooperative” would have been enough. Or, the author could’ve let Isagi respond to when Chigiri said that Ego shouldn’t be completely trusted, or at least let Isagi think about his words in his head.
Even better, we could’ve had a scene of Isagi complaining about Chigiri taking too long to get to their meetings, and then cue in a panel of Chigiri actually taking care of his injury without anyone in Team Z knowing. That would’ve made the audience curious: Is he injured? How bad is it? That could’ve also built indignance among the audience! Shut up, Isagi. You really don’t know what he’s going through.
Or, if they want to make the injury less obvious, maybe just show a panel of Chigiri doing his stretches.
Like, there are so many ways that the author could’ve built up Chigiri while still having his character arc as early as in the First Selection. But they didn’t do that. Yukimiya’s backstory got more build-up, and he’s not even one of the main characters.
I get what you mean though that Chigiri’s arc being revealed after Bachira’s, Reo’s, or Nagi’s would make it less impactful. But as for his backstory not being too complex, I disagree.
I mean, look at Barou. His backstory is much more simple. Like Chigiri, he also came to Blue Lock already confident. His backstory is simply that he was put on a pedestal since he was young and it got into his head. But part of the reason Barou’s arc feels more satisfying is because we see a lot of him pre-development. We see him interact with Isagi several times in the First Selection, and we see him exchange insults with Nagi in the Second Selection. We, the audience, got so much of him that we started to find him annoying, so when his arc came, it was a big fucking finally.
If Chigiri were just any other side character, maybe I wouldn’t care much. But since he’s being set up as one of the main four, I really expect more of him.
Someone on Twitter also mentioned how Chigiri was a victim in the Germany vs England match. There was only one chapter about him, and then it was as if he wasn’t part of the story. His character was sidelined to make way for the intersecting stories of Nagi, Reo, Yukimiya, Isagi, and Kaiser. Chigiri was like an extra who just appeared once in a while to show a cool move or two. His story no longer affects the plot.
It’s such a shame though because his character has so much potential. I really hope the author can turn things around

I've recently gotten a new influx of followers, hello new followers! I'm Gacha, I am primarily a Blue Lock fic writer, I ship Kunigiri and I also play genshin and post about it on my side blog @gachagen
currently my requests are open and you can go to my A03 to read more fics from me that I don't post on tumblr.
Right now my main fic is a Genshin multi-chapter fic called Sharpen Claws, Sharpen Teeth that currently has 31 chapters. I sometimes talk about the fics I'm writing here, and will even give updates to readers when something comes up like if I have plans that conflict with posting.
And lastly, I write a lot of Meta about Blue Lock, RWBY, and pretty much any other interest I find myself consuming that day lol.

(gachagons) bugs the shit out of me how heavily the mods cater to themselves in gachagons. their recent halloween raffle let users use on-site event currency to buy entries which i have no problem with, but the main admin entered 17 times. like come ON.
there should be a fucking limit then on how many one can use to keep it fair

Still can't bring myself to change my icon on here since I've had it since I joined, but I wanted to share the amazing Pride icon I commissioned last month from @/whereshadowsthrive, plus the wonderful ref I commissioned from @/bri-wolfer. 💕 Their name is Wishapon and they are a Gachagon: a highly variable and often brightly colored species of fluffy dragon. They love collectables and trading, and when they are particularly happy, toy capsules will magically appear in their pouch for them to give away as gifts. 💖

(Gachagons) Blog got yeeted around the time I submitted but since we were ragging on Gachagons I wanted to give a shoutout to the time where they told me my PAID MYO slot was void because of a move to lorekeeper they didn't announce anywhere but the discord server... why have a toyhouse world and DA group if you're not gonna use em? I said to hell with it, and finished my designs for personal use MYO slot or not.
that's so incredibly scummy especially if you had proof you paid for it

Hey so whilst reading a good welcome home theory by @gachagon i noticed something in the art of Frank they used
Tumblr media
I’m not sure what it means but if you look at the red rectangle those aren’t franks hands
Tumblr media
I mean look at them, first off it looks like they are structured to have five fingers not four like Frank does.Plus they have nails, a detail no puppet has had as far as I’m aware.
I’m not exactly sure what it means theorywise but my point is those hands don’t look like puppet hands, they look human.
The fact that they’re holding a red rectangle something in front of Frank, as if presenting it to him, could be of significance too but I’ve not really thought of a theory here like I said it’s just a detail I’ve noticed and thought could be important.
I’d like to hear feedback/theories if anyone has any (((:

Hiii I read your Bachisagi fic that you posted recently and I just wanted to say that it was SO GOOD and so cute, I really just loved the way you made Isagi such a chronic overthinker that the moment he even has like the smallest thought about even holding Bachira's hand he spirals into a gay panic and zones out completely T_T I thought it was so funny honestly, and its so different from how I normally write Isagi so now you've inspired me to put this side of him in more of my own fics in the future lol
HI THIS IS SO SWEET??? TYSM 🥺 and YES if there is anything i have incorporated after watching/reading the early pieces of bllk as many times as i have it is that ISAGI CANNOT STOP OVERTHINKING THINGS, love him to bits but lord this boy needs to calm down, and i can only imagine how that would translate to a romantic context lmao, and im glad i could be in inspiration :D!!!

Isagi Yoichi is a weak protagonist
And that’s why he’s perfect for Blue Lock. I like Isagi a lot as the protagonist but many people who are reading and watching Blue Lock for the first time find him to not be that suitable as a protagonist. I’ve already written about how Isagi is a great protagonist for Blue Lock’s themes on egoism here
But I want to talk about how he sort of deviates from the normal shounen protagonist role and how that might be why some people also don’t like him as the protagonist. In many other shounen, the protagonist is an Under dog that we the viewer get to see rise up in their own world and become #1. Right off the bat, some of them are already incredibly confident in their own abilities and believe they can reach the top all on their own.
However, often times these protags can’t reach the top in the beginning and are nowhere near strong enough or smart enough to be #1. For example, Luffy proclaims he’ll be King of the Pirates one day, even though he doesn’t have his own crew, he’s never really been in a fight before, he has no experience being a “real” pirate in the beginning. He’s an underdog who’s talking big when we all know he hasn’t quite reached that level yet. And often times these characters are also unaware of just how “weak” they are in the beginning, they’re so blinded by their own self confidence that they don’t actually see their own flaws until it’s too late.
Isagi however is a bit different then this:
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 we see that from the get go Isagi is really determined and that he’s already got his own goal in mind. Sure it’s not a “huge” goal, but we’re actually seeing him fail and lose from the jump rather than learning about the unfortunate circumstances of why he failed in the past.
Isagi has no sad backstory for why he didn’t make it to nationals, there’s no terrible consequence for him losing this game other than his own disappointment.
Tumblr media
Even when his own team is sobbing because they’ve lost and this is the last time they’ll play together, Isagi is just disappointed because he lost the game. There’s a clear separation between him and his teammates that becomes really apparent  just from this panel. And compared to the guy who did win? Isagi almost looks like a background character in his own manga:
Tumblr media
Blue Lock starts with us seeing the failure of the protagonist, and we see what skill he is at from the very first chapter. Isagi lost a simple game that he had everything riding on, and he lost to a character who looks marginally better and more charismatic then him. So when this scene happens
Tumblr media
its clear to the reader now that Isagi’s motivations are entirely selfish. He didn’t care that he would never get to play with his teammates, he didn’t care that it might be his last year playing beside his team, he only cared about winning. So now we have this “bad” quality that is attributed to our own main character, this selfishness even in the face of loss makes Isagi look a bit like a sore loser.
And I can see why this would kind of make people not like Isagi from the jump, since he’s being incredibly selfish here. He’s upset for the “wrong” reasons when it comes to losing the game, he isn’t okay with just playing “for fun” and to be with his friends. All of the usual friendship tropes many shounen protags are not present in Isagi at all.
Isagi’s selfishness and ego can also feel “unearned” to some people because of this. Isagi has no sad backstory, he wasn’t “the best on his team”, he was completely unremarkable and even says so himself
Tumblr media
“He has no feats” is what some might say to prove how lame Isagi actually is. At this point in the story there is no reason one would really believe Isagi could make it anywhere because that’s just how boring of a player he is. But despite this he has the audacity to feel upset he lost, and not only is he pissed that he lost, but he’s got an ego that says he should’ve won. If he hadn’t passed then, if he had just taken the chance to actually try and score on his own...if he hadn’t decided to rely on his teammates in that moment, he feels like he could’ve won that game.
Tumblr media
Its why he becomes so angry and frustrated in chapter 1 because he realizes he made the wrong choice in deciding to rely on players who he deems were lesser than him.
So not only is our main character incredibly selfish when it comes to soccer, he laments about his choice to rely on his own teammates in the moment he was at his lowest. And this can feel “unearned” to people because there’s nothing Isagi has really done to let us know that he could’ve won without the help of his other teammates.
However, I don’t think that is really the point of these scenes in chapter 1. Or at least, it doesn’t actually matter if Isagi had the skill to win. What matters here is his ego and selfishness despite how mediocre he is. It doesn’t matter to Ego Jinpachi that he lost this game, all Ego cared about was how deep Isagi’s ego runs and whether it can persist in the face of adversity.
If Isagi had decided to be humble and calm himself down in this scene with weak platitudes about how “Soccer is a game played by 11 and not 1″, if he had decided to be content with losing because “At least he got to play with his friends one last time”, he wouldn’t have ever stepped foot in Blue Lock, or even been invited.
Tumblr media
Teamwork is not the end goal here. “Working together” to win is not the goal. Playing as a team is not the goal. The goal is to simply be better than everyone else, and that includes the people you’re working together with.
Tumblr media
Isagi’s egoism is entirely selfish and it isn’t rooted in his own ability, it exists simply because he wants to win and he feels like he deserves to because he, like Ego Jinpachi, felt that he shouldn’t have relied on others to try and win that game.
In a sense, Isagi’s egoism is almost like that of a villain rather than a hero. He doesn’t become this way after failing over and over again, but rather because he passed the ball in a moment where he could’ve scored. He held himself back so he could play “as a team” and he regrets it.
So Blue Lock’s protagonist is one that is different from others in the shounen category because unlike the others, he’s a selfish, egotistical person right from the beginning and he has no intentions of ever changing that. In fact, throughout the manga he just gets “worse” at this, and all the moments he does score goals are because of this selfish nature of his.
