love how lestat is consciously and constantly delineating himself in relation to his mother. the castle and his father’s lands constitute his entire world and in this insular environment his models of ideal physicality and intellectual prowess are formed in relation to the only person in the world who shows him any sympathy, the person that he admires begrudgingly despite her complicity in denying him personhood. he admires and resents her in equal measure, desiring to be her with a pathological obsession that almost equals his mother’s desire to be him - and he’s developed such an intense psychological investment in comparing his flaws to the material advantages she holds over him that he also describes himself as a cruder, less well-formed reincarnation of his mother, even as he admits that she’s wasting away from illness.

last movie: alien! i watched it a few weeks ago for the first time and i liked it! excited to watch the rest of them~

last show: abbott elementary - im on the last few eps in s3❣️such a funny show and really good palette cleanser. highly recommend

last book: carrie. read it a few weeks ago and i liked it more than i thought i would! it was also a nice quick read and a good break from all my academic readings

last googled thing/looked up: the milkbar pumpkin pie recipe! thinking about making it over the break (we dont do thanksgiving in my house) so i think itd be a fun lil thang to do after classes are over

looking forward to: FINALS BEING OVER😭 🙏and getting started on my tbr and watch list and just getting a break from school which i desperately need😔

many things going on in tvl, re: lestat and the enmeshment of his body and his identity with his mother. I’m thinking about how he’s constantly defining his physical attributes in relation to her. he’s attuned to her psychically too - he narrates his history entirely in relation to his mother: her defiance, he reasons, enables and legitimises his own defiance of the law of the household. they share mutual resentment and sympathy for one another for their various respective advantages and disadvantages in the social and domestic spheres of their lives. also what if you were 21 years old and you dedicated your body and life in service to your family and your mother had also wasted her life away in the fulfilment of her domestic and reproductive duties… as the youngest son with no prospects or tangible inheritance he’s denied independence and decision-making capabilities in ways that evoke gabrielle’s own powerlessness due to the gendered nature of her oppression.

it’s almost like their identities are so tangled up in one another that the book is asking us to interrogate whether they really have seperate bodies and minds.
