circling back to TB and vampires. tuberculosis was a romantic disease in the literary imagination -> the pale complexion afforded to its female victims was often viewed as enhancing their desirability and their erotic drives -> gabrielle explicitly fantasies about being sexually liberated and having multiple extramarital relations while she’s suffering from consumption -> since everything is about wuthering heights when you’re talking about gabrielle and lestat - catherine earnshaw succumbs to tuberculosis much like gabrielle herself -> deaths due to tuberculosis were also often attributed moral weight -> catherine and heathcliff developed incestuous feelings for one another and her death could’ve been viewed as judgement passed on her for her transgressive desires, as a woman, and due to the incestuous nature of her feelings -> lestat and gabrielle develop a dynamic of complete codependency in TVL that almost seems to necessitate that the wellbeing of one is ensured through the wellbeing of the other through a shared psychic bond -> lestat, unlike heathcliff, is able to rescue his beloved from the clutches of moral judgement but this is done by paradoxically killing his own beloved (“You said I killed you! Haunt me then!”) and solidifying their familial bond twice over by becoming her parent. he then proclaims that they’ll love each other even in hell (i.e. outside of socially prescribed norms of acceptable desire) while facilitating her sexual liberation.

rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead back in september in honor of pathologic month ❣️❣️ the fourth wall breaking tragic video game to literature pipeline is a very real phenomenon for me. side note: it's kind of a sledgehammer of a recommendation, but every ragad enjoyer should read moby dick :) much to go insane over in the "all the world's a stage" category of tales

What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?

reading daphne du maurier's the progress of julius was a dizzying experience, so i have to go with that one. it's about an utterly selfish man, an insatiable wanderer, stepping across any man made boundary in his path, seeking some indescribable and uncapturable world, and who ultimately meets his match in the daughter who is too like him for it to ever end happily. just an insane story that should be much more well known.

What books do you want to finish before the year is over?

don't look now and other stories by daphne du maurier. finishing short story collections are an entirely self-inflicted sisyphean struggle for me, but for daphne i will persevere. speaking of which, i need more people to read "a border-line case" from this collection!! it has some similar elements to julius, but with even more of an omnipresent dread, especially with the bergmanesque theatre motifs. also reading the final passage felt like an ice pick through the heart ❤️‍🩹

last book: reiterbilder der frührenaissance by raphael beuing (i dont speak german so you can imagine my suffering). uni stuff aside, no shortcuts to the top by ed viesturs. and the main book im reading right now is Q by luther blisset

last movie: i rewatched pride & prejudice 2005 last night. my last first watch was casino royale 2006 which was fun

last tv show: nobody wants this on netflix. mid and cheesy but i needed something to watch in the background

favourite colour: most shades of blue. i also like burgundy and lavender but im a blue guy first and foremost

sweet, savoury or spicy: either savoury or spicy i cant choose. but definitely not sweet

relationship status: take a guess

last thing i googled: something that would doxx me big time. before that "manhole"

current obsession: mainly surviving the semester. i dont have time or energy for much else 😭. mountaineering i suppose

looking forward to: going back to my hometown to watch a play with mum tomorrow and then meeting up with long distance friends on saturday!!!

love how lestat is consciously and constantly delineating himself in relation to his mother. the castle and his father’s lands constitute his entire world and in this insular environment his models of ideal physicality and intellectual prowess are formed in relation to the only person in the world who shows him any sympathy, the person that he admires begrudgingly despite her complicity in denying him personhood. he admires and resents her in equal measure, desiring to be her with a pathological obsession that almost equals his mother’s desire to be him - and he’s developed such an intense psychological investment in comparing his flaws to the material advantages she holds over him that he also describes himself as a cruder, less well-formed reincarnation of his mother, even as he admits that she’s wasting away from illness.

it's funny that they used the same actress for christine and the phantom's mother because you know it wasn't a budget decision they just did it for the love of freudian nightmares... i knew this the second they showed the phantom somehow having a portrait of his mother and a dress of her that somehow fits christine perfectly
