Las aventuras de la China Iron o cómo dar cuenta de la rapidez apenas percibida (Novela de Gabriela Cabezón Cámara)

Esta prosa ha volado alto. Literalmente. Las páginas como rampa de lanzamiento, el humo y el rugido a cada capítulo terminado… El libro lo compró una amiga porteña en su Buenos Aires. La morena me lo presta, además de otro, un libro primerizo el segundo, escrito por una mina de Islas Canarias (pero eso es harina de otro costal). 

Laura, en su casa, me tira el par de libros arriba de la mesa. Es su casa, puede tirar lo que quiera sobre los muebles. Me mira y me dice « a ver qué te parecen estos dos que traje de Argentina ». Me gusta la gente que te da la libertad de darte tu propia opinión. Opinólogos, abundan como el hidrógeno del aire. Por ahí se van, con sus ligeras verdades absolutas, les abro la ventana, se van. Chao, chao. 

El libro en cuestión hace entonces un primer viaje, desde Buenos Aires hacia Francia. Luego yo lo traigo de vuelta, desde el país galo a Chile. Lo leo en el avión a 12 mil metros del Atlántico. Me roba la atención, me absorbe como las nubes al pájaro de hierro en el que avanzo. La historia de esta China hace que olvide la selección de películas que ofrece el vuelo. Es que esta prosa vuela. Creo que ya lo dije. Remata sus párrafos con descripciones de la pampa argentina que poco a poco se vuelve un paisaje tan protagonista como la China. Porque es una historia iniciática, la travesía de la protagonista en medio de la monótona planicie. La joven protagonista, una adolescente, huye de los golpes y violaciones: « El viejo hijo de puta me jugó al truco y Fierro le ganó » (p 76). Huye de las consecuencias de la violación, los hijos. Emprende una huida de la animalidad a la que la han condicionado. Su escape lo hace a bordo de una carreta, capsula de sobrevivencia, a la que sigue una perra, Estreya. La carreta la conduce una mujer venida desde horizontes sajones. Es con ella, Elizabeth o Liz, que huye de la amenaza de los caranchos y de un séquito hostil de naturaleza. Una huye, la otra, la compañera, guía, semi madre, semi amante, es la inglesa que busca su pequeño paraíso en tierras argentinas. Búsqueda y huída son dos movimientos que se cruzan en la trama, en la cama, en las vestimentas y en la pampa que es paisaje y cementerio.

No se trata de una trama en sentido único, horizontal, sino múltiple. Ascensión y descenso, forman una trenza. Al horizonte se une la planicie en un vuelo constante, dinámica propia a aquella geografía del eterno duo: entre terrorífica y sublime : « Estar en la pampa era, entonces, como planear en un escenario que no parecía tener más aventuras que las propias » (p. 50). La China promete un viaje que no suelta al que se deja llevar por un lenguaje, un hablar de marginada y de iniciada en lo fugaz. Porque aunque en muchos pasajes, ella describe la monotonía del viaje, también advierte la rapidez con que la vida emerge y desaparece en la pampa. Se blanquean los huesos de restos humanos, como señales de ruta hacia la violencia de los hombres en esos paisajes periféricos. Vemos a través de los ojos de la China, con su manera de entender la naturaleza y las personas. La China se deja llevar por la rapidez, avanza y se deja sorprender por la redondez de la tierra desde un punto preciso: la carreta. Ese rectángulo es su tabla, su isla, su alfombra voladora: « El hogar siempre nos parece pegado a la tierra, aun cuando sea un barco. O una carreta. » (p 51). Alrededor de la Isla la vida explota, se manifiesta hermosa y salvaje: « La vida nueva era eso: me sentía arrojada al agua » (p 38). El lenguaje de la China reitera alusiones a lo veloz con que la naturaleza emerge y fluye, incluso en las capas subterráneas de la pampa o al interior de un fortin con hombres embrutecidos y un esperpéntico cotidiano. También la ambivalencia de este fluir trasciende en lo que ella va aprendiendo del viaje. Así, no sintetiza al hombre en un rol fijo, sino que lo rescata en su complejidad, le da volumen, materia viva. De esta forma, el gaucho que aparece en algún punto de la aventura, luego de matar a un ternero, se despoja de la áspera relación entre el predador y la presa : « después de desollar al ternero, se acercó a la vaca, la acarició, le pidió perdón, le dio de comer en la boca unos pastos que traía. La vaca siguió llorando y caminando » (p 45). La ultima vuelta de tuerca es una alucinante embestida a la tradición literaria con la aparición del Fierro, ese del que tantos hablan en las clases de folclor literario argento. Los mitos reviven, son celebrados al punto de hacer navegar o volar, no se sabe bien, vacas e indígenas.

Ahora la China volverá a Francia (escribo esto desde algún lugar de Chile). La prosa esta vez es un ir y venir, entre cielo y velocidades íntimamente ligadas a mi cansancio de viajero enlatado.

Le roman de Michel Houellebecq pourrait faire figure de favori pour remporter ce prix qui récompense à parts égales écrivain et traducteur.

L’International Booker Prize a révélé, jeudi 27 février, la première sélection de son édition 2020. Sérotonine de Michel Houellebecq (Flammarion) fait partie des 13 ouvrages pressentis pour recevoir ce prix qui distingue chaque année un roman traduit en anglais et publié au Royaume-Uni. L’auteur et le traducteur sont récompensés à parts égales, sur la base d’une dotation de 50000 livres (58800 euros). Au total, 11 pays et 8 langages sont représentés.   Sérotonine, traduit en anglais par Shaun Whitesite et publié par William Heinemann au Royaume-Uni, figure aux côtés d’un autre ouvrage français, Un renard à mains nues, d’Emmanuelle Pagano, publié en France par POL et par Peirene Press Outre-Manche, dans une traduction de Sophie Lewis et Jennifer Higgins.   Cinq romans étrangers sélectionnés sont parus ou vont paraître en France : La huitième vie : pour Brilka de Nino Haratischvili (Piranha, 2017, traduit de l’allemand par Barbara Fontaine et Monique Rival), Le roman de Tyll Ulespiègle de Daniel Kehlmann (Actes Sud, 2020, traduit de l’allemand par Juliette Aubert), La saison des ouragans de Fernanda Melchor (Grasset, 2019, traduit de l’espagnol par Laura Alcoba), Qui sème le vent de Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (Buchet Chastel, 16 avril 2020, traduit du néerlandais par Daniel Cunin) et Mac et son contretemps d’Enrique Vila-Matas (Bourgois, 2017, traduit de l’espagnol par André Gabastou).   Quatre autres auteurs retenus dans cette première sélection ont déjà été publiés en France : la Japonaise Yoko Ogawa, dont l’œuvre est disponible chez Actes Sud, l’Argentine Samanta Schweblin, déjà parue chez Gallimard et au Seuil, Gabriela Cabezon Camara, qui sera bientôt éditée chez l’Ogre (Pleines de grâce, 19 mars 2020, traduit de l’espagnol par Guillaume Contré) ainsi que Jon Fosse, présent au répertoire de l’Arche.   Les finalistes seront dévoilés le 2 avril prochain, avant l’annonce du lauréat le 19 mai.
