THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT GABRIEL OF THE SEVEN SORROWS (Francesco Possenti) Feast Day: February 27
"Our perfection does not consist of doing extraordinary things but to do the ordinary well."
St. Gabriel's life reveals that a profound love for the Mother of Sorrows is of the very essence of the Passionist charism, for it was Mary who appeared to young Paul Francis Daneo, the Passionist founder, and called him to found the Congregation.
Francisco Possenti was born in Assisi on March 1, 1838, the eleventh child of Sante Possenti and Agnes Frisciotti.
The first year of his life was spent away from his family with a nursing woman who cared for him because his mother was unable. In 1841 Sante moved the family to Spoleto where he was appointed magistrate. In that same year, the youngest Possenti child died at just six months old; Francis' nine-year old sister, Adele, soon followed. Just days later, his heartbroken mother was too called to eternal life. Francis had lost his mother at just 4 years old.
Tragedy continued to plague the family during his youth. In 1846 Francis' brother, Paul, was killed in the Italian war with Austria. Another brother, Lawrence, later took his own life. Such events, however, did not rob Francis of his spirit and cheerfulness. During his formative years, Francis attended the school of the Christian brothers and then the Jesuit college in Spoleto. He was lively, intelligent and popular at school. At sixteen, he suffered a life-threatening illness. Praying for a cure, Francis promised to become a religious. With recovery, however, Francis quickly forgot his promise. But God's call would not be denied, and Francis soon turned his heart to the Congregation of the Passionists.
Francisco was less than pleased with his teenage son's decision. Determined to show Francis the joys of a secular life of theater and society parties, Sante continued to hope Francis would find pleasure in a social life. But the young man was not to be dissuaded. Immediately after completion of his schooling, he left for the Passionist novitiate in Morrovalle. In the novitiate, he cultivated a great love for Christ Crucified. Francis received the Passionist habit on September 21, 1856, which that year was the Feast of the Sorrowful Mother.
He was given the name: Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. A year later he took his vows.
His monastic life preparing for the priesthood made Gabriel a secluded, non-public figure. His writings reflect his close relationship with God and His mother.
These were difficult and tumultuous times in Italy. The new Italian government issued decrees closing religious Orders in certain provinces of the Papal States. The new Passionist province of Pieta, to which Gabriel belonged, was in the center of this chaos. By 1860, the Passionists had ceased apostolic work due to the growing threats surrounding the community. During this period various Italian provinces were overrun by soldiers who robbed and terrorized the towns with little mercy.
The people of Isola would always remember him as 'their Gabriel.'
Struck with tuberculosis at the age of 24, Gabriel died on February 27, 1862, before his ordination to the priesthood. His fidelity to prayer, joyfulness of spirit and habitual mortifications stand out in his otherwise ordinary life.
Pope Benedict XV canonized Gabriel in 1920 and declared him a patron of Catholic youth. His patronage is also invoked by the Church for students, seminarians, novices and clerics. Thousands of divine favors are attributed to his intercession with Christ Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother Mary.

SAINT OF THE DAY (February 27)
Tumblr media
Gabriel was born Francesco Possenti on 1 March 1838 in Assisi, Italy.
He was baptised on the day of his birth in the same font in which Francis of Assisi had been baptised.
He lost his mother when he was only four years old.
He was educated by the Jesuits and, having been cured twice of serious illnesses, came to believe that God was calling him to the religious life.
Young Francis wished to join the Jesuits but was turned down, probably because of his age, not yet 17.
Following the death of a sister to cholera, his resolve to enter religious life became even stronger. He was accepted by the Passionists.
Upon entering the novitiate, he was given the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Ever popular and cheerful, Gabriel quickly was successful in his effort to be faithful in little things.
His spirit of prayer, love for the poor, consideration of the feelings of others, exact observance of the Passionist Rule, as well as his bodily penances — always subject to the will of his wise superiors — made a deep impression on everyone.
His superiors had great expectations of Gabriel as he prepared for the priesthood, but after only four years of religious life, symptoms of tuberculosis appeared.
Ever obedient, he patiently bore the painful effects of the disease and the restrictions it required, seeking no special notice.
He died peacefully on 27 February 1862 at the age of 24, having been an example to both young and old.
He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 31 May 1908. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XV on 13 May 1920.
He is the patron saint of Catholic youth. His patronage is also invoked by the Church for students, seminarians, novices, and clerics.

You have beautiful art! I'd love it if you drew St. Gabriel Possenti, he'd look great in your art style :) look into his order, the Passionists, if you don't know of them, they're dedicated to the Passion of Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows. Their habit is also really cool
Thank you so much! ❤️ I didn't know him and the Passionists, so thanks for the suggestion! I'll do some research for sure and maybe draw him :)

HOMILY for Our Lady of Walsingham
Eccl 11:9–12:8; Ps 89; Luke 9:43-45
Tumblr media
Joy is not an emotion. Unlike mere enjoyment, which is transient, like youth, as the first reading suggests, joy is more resilient and abides because it is founded on a profound truth that is grasped by the intellect. Joy, therefore, is an intellectual virtue that directs our emotions. And so, even when faced by suffering, and the Cross, and the spiritual piercing of her Immaculate Heart with sorrow, Mary remains the Woman to whom the angel had given the greeting: Chaire, Hail, Rejoice! For Mary’s joy is rooted in the Annunciation and the angel’s message that through her Fiat, this world, ruined and fallen into sin and captive to the devil, has been saved, rebuilt, raised up.
So, those of us who go to Walsingham today would see the sad ruins of the abbey and Shrine that once marked the site where Our Lady had directed Richeldis to build a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth, Mary’s home where the Annunciation took place, so that Mary’s own body would become the home, a living tabernacle, for the Incarnate Lord Jesus Christ. And yet, our sorrow at the destruction and devastation wrought by the so-called Reformation, and the ongoing effects of Christian disunity, is tempered by the joy that nevertheless, alongside all our human miseries and failures and sorrows, God is with us. For at the Annunciation, God became Man in Mary’s womb. This was her great joy, and it is meant for the whole world. Walsingham stands as a reminder of this, even in its current state, and it is our privilege and mission as English Catholics to rejoice in this cosmic-changing truth of the Incarnation.
Hence the 15th-century Pynson Ballad declared: “O England, you have every reason to be glad that you are compared to the promised land of Sion. This glorious Lady’s grace and favour attest that you can be called everywhere the holy land, Our Lady’s Dowry, a name given to you from of old. This title is due to the fact that here is built the house of new Nazareth in honour of our heavenly Queen and her glorious Salutation. As Gabriel hailed her with an ‘Ave’ in old Nazareth, so here that [great event] is daily remembered with joy.”
Daily, because our troubles and sorrows are also daily, so daily, we need to remember the Incarnation with joy. For behold, God is with us. Because of this, we shall be raised up from our sins and sadnesses and even from death. Thus, daily in this Marian Shrine of the Holy Rosary, we recite the Angelus so that in our minds and imaginations, we are brought to Nazareth, or even to Walsingham, England’s Nazareth. We recall the Annunciation in order to share the Virgin Mary’s joy, and to receive a share in her graces. Thus the Pynson Ballad says: “Therefore, pilgrims all, strive to serve Our Lady with humble love. Apply yourself to doing as she would wish, remembering the great joy of her Annunciation.”
So, in the Gospel today, although Jesus’s disciples did not understand his meaning, we can be sure that Christ’s most perfect disciple, his mother, understood. From the moment Simeon spoke his prophecy, and she began to ponder these things in her Immaculate Heart, she knew that her Son would be “handed over into the power of men”, that he, the Immaculate Lamb of God, would have to be offered up as a Sacrifice for sin. Yet through her tears and despite her pain, the Mater Dolorosa is always the Woman of the Annunciation too. Thus, her faith in God’s Word, her hope in his promises, and her love for God keeps her always joyfully open to his divine will. With her Son, Mary too has handed herself over to whatever God allows, whatever is necessary, so that the Saviour’s mission will be accomplished.
For knowing that the Son of Man came to “give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10:45) so Mary can, ultimately, rejoice. As she sings in her Magnificat, “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour”. So with her, and through the prayers of Our Lady of Walsingham, may we share Mary’s joy and rejoice in God who is with us and who is daily working to save us.

SAINT OF THE DAY (February 27)

(1 March 1838 – 27 February 1862)
Francesco Possenti was born on 1 March 1838, in Assisi, Italy, the eleventh of thirteen children born to his mother, Agnes, and his father, Sante.

His superiors had great expectations of him as he prepared for the priesthood, but after only four years of religious life, symptoms of tuberculosis appeared.
Ever obedient, he patiently bore the painful effects of the disease and the restrictions it required, seeking no special notice.
He had prayed for a slow death so as to be able to prepare himself spiritually.
He died on 27 February 1862, holding close an image of Our Lady of Sorrows and smiling peacefully.
Those who were with Possenti when he died reported that at the moment of death, he sat up in bed and his face became radiant as he reached out to an otherwise unseen figure that was entering the room.
It was said that Possenti had seen the Virgin Mary at the very moment of his death.
Possenti was beatified by Pope Pius X on 31 May 1908.
The outbreak of the First World War delayed Possenti's canonisation for a while, but on 13 May 1920, he was raised to the altars by Pope Benedict XV.

who are your favorite saints? i’ve been a catholic all my life but i never really knew that much about many of them. after doing some deeper research my favorites are probably st catherine of siena, st michael the archangel, st francis of Assisi, and st dominic savio
Ahh I'm so glad to hear you're exploring and learning more about our heavenly family! I love St. Michael the Archangel, but I don't know St. Dominic Savio yet.
I have a lot of beloved Saints because I've always needed a lot of prayers. That said, I don't feel as close to them as I did earlier on in my journey. I think I've very much settled into a rhythm of resting with Our Lady and St. Joseph because of how important they are to me and the unique honour they have among the Saints, The rest sort of lovingly interject themselves. It's very sweet actually; I have a special place in my heart for a lot of Saints but because of that, having a strong relationship with them individually sort of comes in waves. Right now a big wave seems to be St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful mother to help me in my pride, but when I was really struggling with the death of a certain person and the impact they'd had on my life, St. Maria Goretti was right there with me.
My Confirmation Saint is St. Veronica (the hemorrhaging woman in the Gospels and, in Sacred Tradition, the woman who wiped Christ's face with her veil while He was carrying the Cross) because of an experience I had during the Holy Rosary and in meditative prayer on some childhood trauma. I don't necessarily feel particularly close to her relationally, but I often ask for her intercession. A similar case with St. Jude. St. Andre Bessette and Bl. Solanus Casey are very important to me, and an old friend I haven't spoken much with is St. Elizabeth of the Trinity. Honestly, I have a personal litany of Saints I pull out sometimes that I could share if you're interested, just because so many Saints have been such wonderful friends at different points in my walk with God. I also still ask for my ex's grandmother's intercession because I'm convinced she was a Saint.
But yeah, although I have lot of Saints I pray with, I definitely feel closest to St. Joseph. Of all the Saints, I genuinely feel a relationship with him and a presence about him that I don't encounter elsewhere. I can't quite articulate the role his intercession has had on me properly. I love him so much,
