I love the Howling Commandos so much, they’re so underrated if you ask me, especially the awesome dynamic they 100% had. I imagine all of them in very specific ways, some things are based off of fics I’ve read, some of it is just me.
Steve Rogers: Steve is the youngest of them all, he’s also the least experienced one and he hasn’t been part of the group nearly as long as the others considering he came into the picture after Kreischberg. He’s really fun to talk to and he’s as much of a little shit as the others are, being the leader of their group he’s in charge of tacking care of talking to superiors and shit, and he often ignores direct orders to do what he thinks is a better option, he also lets his team get away with things regular soldiers wouldn’t be allowed to do and they love him for it. He often gets yelled at by Bucky after doing stupid shit, the other Howlies often jokingly refer to him as “Dad” when it’s just them.
Bucky Barnes: Bucky has the others’ immense respect from the start, because he’s protective and caring as much as he hates to admit it. He is the only one who has negative amount of problems yelling at Steve after he did some stupid shit, he was the most scarred by Kreischberg but never lets it show. He loves music and always has a song stuck in his head and has fun pissing the others off by butchering the songs when it’s safe to be loud. He trusts Steve more than he probably should and goes with his plans, though he often forces him to modify them and cut down the crap. His protectiveness and strictness when Steve’s being a dumbass gets the others to nickname him “Mom” when they’re in private. He ‘hates’ it.
Dum Dum Dugan: Dum Dum was Bucky’s closest friend after Steve, he has a stupid sense of humor and says way too many dad jokes than is good for his teammates’ mental health. He’s always the first to jump at the opportunity to get his hands on some alcohol (no one complains about that) and he and Jim are the primary clowns of the group. He loves to tease the others, especially “Mom” and “Dad”.
Jim Morita: Jim is the one in charge of their immediate medical problems and small tech involved stuff, like Dugan, he has a shit sense of humor and they often get into battles of who can out dad-joke the other.
Gabe Jones: like Dum Dum, Gabe has known Bucky since before Azzano, and is the one in charge of languages, he speaks French and German more fluently than the others do and in the beginning he was usually in charge of dealing with Jacques’ bullshit.
Monty Falsworth: Monty is the only official member of the Howlies who isn’t broke (he is often teased about it). He could be considered the most sane of the Howlies (though not by far) he is the most experienced of the group to talk about strategy and often helps Steve and helps Bucky knock some reason into the little shit. They like to tease him for living up to every British stereotype and is often asked to ‘translate’ what Peggy says. He has a sister named Jaqueline who is a spy for the SOE.
Jacques Dernier: Jacques was a member of the French resistance, he’s from Marseille and is fully fluent in English but refuses to speak it. He understands everything the others tell him but speaks to them in French and lets them deal with it, after over a year of dealing with him all of the Howlies are more or less fluent in French. They call him a fucking pyromaniac because of his love of explosives and his talent with them. He also has a shit sense of humor that rivals with Dum Dum and Jim and is probably the most batshit crazy member of the team (though the others are pretty close behind him).
Howard Stark is considered an honorary member of the Howlies idc about any contradiction: rule n°1 when it comes to Howard Stark; don’t leave him alone with Jacques Dernier. They will set something on fire or worse. He and Monty are often laughed at for having money and they tease back by talking about rich people problems in front of the others. He is called a lot of names by the Howlies such as things like “Gadget”, “Engineer”, “Civilian”, “Civy” and things among those lines making fun of him not technically being a part of the military. He is involved in a lot of the Howlies’ inside jokes including the “Mom” and “Dad” thing.

Thinking about one of the best fanfics I’ve ever read and how it hasn’t been updated since 2023. 😭
Best Bits:
- the team bullying an entitled and arrogant reporter who’s in over his head in an active warzone
- Dernier’s Canon Event (hot damn my heart broke)
- the incredible depth of friendship between Steve and Bucky
- the way Jim finally demands Bucky quit lying through his teeth about being fine after the torture at Azzano and finally spits out the truth (“You are my family.”)
- the way Monty patiently settles into an implicit mentorship role for Steve as he acclimates to his promotion
- Dugan learning how to be a better pal and NOT piss off everyone around him quite so much
- the compassionate and philosophical bond between Gabe and Dernier (‼️❤️‼️)
- Bucky comforting Dernier in France as he’s overwhelmed by grief for his homeland yet is unable to recognize the shattered remains of their surroundings (‼️😭‼️)
AHHHHHHHH

"Don't get up on your high horse with me, Anne Shirley."
"Marilla pessimistically expected more trouble since Anne had again begun to go to school. But none developed. Perhaps Anne caught something of the “model” spirit from Minnie Andrews; at least she got on very well with Mr. Phillips thenceforth. She flung herself into her studies heart and soul, determined not to be outdone in any class by Gilbert Blythe. The rivalry between them was soon apparent; it was entirely good-natured on Gilbert’s side; but it is much to be feared that the same thing cannot be said of Anne, who had certainly an unpraiseworthy tenacity for holding grudges. She was as intense in her hatreds as in her loves. She would not stoop to admit that she meant to rival Gilbert in schoolwork, because that would have been to acknowledge his existence which Anne persistently ignored; but the rivalry was there and honors fluctuated between them. Now Gilbert was head of the spelling class; now Anne, with a toss of her long red braids, spelled him down. One morning Gilbert had all his sums done correctly and had his name written on the blackboard on the roll of honor; the next morning Anne, having wrestled wildly with decimals the entire evening before, would be first. One awful day they were ties and their names were written up together. It was almost as bad as a take-notice and Anne’s mortification was as evident as Gilbert’s satisfaction. When the written examinations at the end of each month were held the suspense was terrible. The first month Gilbert came out three marks ahead. The second Anne beat him by five. But her triumph was marred by the fact that Gilbert congratulated her heartily before the whole school. It would have been ever so much sweeter to her if he had felt the sting of his defeat.
Mr. Phillips might not be a very good teacher; but a pupil so inflexibly determined on learning as Anne was could hardly escape making progress under any kind of teacher. By the end of the term Anne and Gilbert were both promoted into the fifth class and allowed to begin studying the elements of “the branches”—by which Latin, geometry, French, and algebra were meant. In geometry Anne met her Waterloo.
“It’s perfectly awful stuff, Marilla,” she groaned. “I’m sure I’ll never be able to make head or tail of it. There is no scope for imagination in it at all. Mr. Phillips says I’m the worst dunce he ever saw at it. And Gil—I mean some of the others are so smart at it. It is extremely mortifying, Marilla.
“Even Diana gets along better than I do. But I don’t mind being beaten by Diana. Even although we meet as strangers now I still love her with an inextinguishable love. It makes me very sad at times to think about her. But really, Marilla, one can’t stay sad very long in such an interesting world, can one?”

Did y’all know there’s an entire playthrough of Captain America: Supersoldier (Xbox 360) on YouTube?
And they included the original voice actors for Cap, Dugan, Falsworth, Peggy, and Bucky?
Sometimes when I’m down in the dumps I listen to bits and pieces of it just to appreciate JJ Feild reprising his role as Falsworth. 😏

I saw a picture of the Howling Commandos that I'd never seen before from someone's Instagram last week, so I've been looking for other Howlie stuff and posting it. I decided to go back and watch the bonus features of CA:TFA, which I haven't actually watched in years. And LOOK AT ALL THIS STUFF THEY FILMED! We just get peeks of it here between the interviews, but damn, it breaks my heart! I want to see Cap and the Commandos! Dammit Marvel, I know you have this in a vault somewhere!

Reposting because you all deserve to bask in the wholesomeness. I love the way this artist captures the vibe of the team, especially Dugan with his big ole’ laugh.
so.. I like to think that one of the USO showgirls was a former acrobat and taught Steve a few tricks to liven up their routine. And when the howlies catch wind of this...

Martin Luther King, Joan Baez & Harry Belafonte
In my young life, before there was Pete Seeger, before there was Odetta, before there was the Kingston Trio…
There was Harry Belafonte.
And there sat mom and I, gazing at an album cover of the handsomest man we’d ever seen, and listening to “Scarlet Ribbons.” Harry’s voice was scratchy and smooth at the same time, and I would listen to nothing else.
I had recently switched from ukulele to guitar, and proceeded to memorize every song in his repertoire. My singing was wobbly, but hidden in my throat was “the voice.” I found myself in an ever so amateur studio, where I donned large uncomfortable headphones and poked at the large intimidating microphone. Out of the twelve songs I recorded, six were Belafonte’s.
I could not have known then that the man with the scratchy/smooth voice and the face of brown velvet would be there ten years later walking side by side with Dr. King and myself in Montgomery, Alabama. Or that his commitment to nonviolence and civil rights was unshakable, and that as he was lifted up by the movement, he lifted up the movement with his eloquent voice, both singing and speaking.
The last time I saw Harry he was in his nineties and proud of it. His beautiful wife Pam explained to him whatever he didn’t quite hear. He looked like a sage, or a prophet, or a royal. He was virtually blind, but smiled broadly and punctuated the conversation with mischievous comments. He was all there.
When my son and I left the apartment we were verging on tears.
Gabe said, “It’s like we’ve just been in the presence of a fucking prophet.”
We had been.

Hugging Malleus after his overblot
I have made another, hopefully, lyrically accurate Twisted Wonderland playlist, this time to cure the heartache Chapter 7 has caused me.
Listen to it here
╰┈➤ 1. trustfall • nicole milik
picture a place where it all doesn't hurt, where everything's safe and it doesn't get worse...oh my...we see through bloodshot eyes; picture a place, somewhere else far away, where you know what they mean and they mean what they say to us and would that be enough? [...] close your eyes and leave it all behind, go where love is on our side, it's a trust fall
╰┈➤ 2. dust to dust • the civil wars
you've held your head up; you've fought the fight. you bear the scars and you've done your time. listen to me, you've been lonely too long. let me in the walls you've built around; we can light a match and burn them down; let me hold your hand and dance 'round and 'round the flames in front of us...dust to dust
╰┈➤ 3. forgive me friend • smith & thell
i promised you that we would never change; that you and me would always stay the same....how i let you down....and I guess that we don't mean to be falling apart, but you will always have a special place in my heart; i never wanted this to end; can you forgive me, friend?
╰┈➤ 4. rescue • lauren daigle
i hear the whisper underneath your breath; i hear you whisper, you have nothing left...i will send out an army to find you in the middle of the darkest night; it's true, I will rescue you; I will never stop marching to reach you
╰┈➤ 5. walk with me • the hound + the fox
i'm okay as i could be and i'm afraid as i should be; but i keep moving because i can, hardly...and i am choosing all i am. they say what goes away just might come back...but i don't want that. walk with me.
╰┈➤ 6. all will be well • the gabe dixon band
the new day dawns and I am practicing my purpose once again; it is fresh and it is fruitful if I win but if I lose...oh, I don′t know; i'll be tired but I will turn and I will go, only guessing till I get there then I′ll know [...] all will be well; even after all the promises you've broken to yourself; all will be well, you can ask me how but only time will tell
╰┈➤ 7. ooh child • milck
some day we'll get it together and we'll get it all done, some day when your head is much lighter; some day we'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun, someday when the world is much brighter; ooh child, things are gonna get easier
╰┈➤ 8. my heart is buried in venice • ricky montgomery
come rest your bones next to me and toss all your thoughts to the sea, i'll pull up each of our anchors so we can get lost, you and me; my heart is buried in venice, hidden beneath all my worries and doubts; my heart is buried in venice, waiting for someone to take it home
╰┈➤ 9. yes to heaven • lana del ray
if you go I'll stay; you come back I'll be right here like a barge at sea; in the storm I stay clear 'cause i've got my mind on you...i've got my mind on you; say yes to heaven, say yes to me
╰┈➤ 10. call the nightingale • vian izak
there is heartache on your lips and your heart's a foreign house and your soul is full of rips; but don't be scared of the dark, it's been less bite and more bark; don't be scared of the end, life always begins again with the songs of nightingales

I hope you've been able to find some outreach stuff since you've posted this.
I'm in my final year in my degree which is sustainable food systems and agroecology. This is my main focus even if my first jobs probably won't be in this specific field. I've been able to meet and work with farmers and agroecologists mainly through my classes and projects but other people I have met from going to volunteering opportunities and conferences.
If you're in the US, I recommend looking up agricultural extensions from universities and USDA and looking for any workshops or volunteering opportunities they may have. They often have someone there that does volunteering or outreach or awareness stuff outside their job (finding like minded people).
Even if you're not in the US, I recommend searching for programs that teach farming to children. You'll be more likely to find like minded people there. Or you could go back to your university, look for the faculty that worked in sustainable agriculture, and ask them to get the hookup to groups that are in that field in outreach or teaching or volunteering.
I also recommend farmers markets. You can find some real passionate growers there. They might have some more info on the local community efforts.
I would really like somehow someway to put my education in agriculture towards a social movement -- in food sovereignty and sustainable systems, and things like that. But honestly I have no clue how to do so. Where I am agriculture is very dominated by more privileged white farmers that can afford technological and chemical solutions to problems, and so conventional ag is the dominant system. Everything I've read thus far makes it sound like the only way to influence that group of people is to establish a farm myself and have them come around eventually by proving I'm not insane (and proving that I make a profit), which would require personal capital that I simply don't have and couldn't get for years (if even, in this economy). There is a city nearby but it doesn't have an urban agriculture movement like a lot of major cities do, as far as I'm aware at least.
Idk, I've been spending a lot of time frustrated at the existing possibilities of what I can do where I am with my degree, that maybe I haven't been thinking and learning outside the box enough. I think I'm going to move towards learning more about grassroots movements and organizations and being a good community member. I feel that might reveal a door I can't see right now.
#agriculture#agroecology#food sovereignty#sustainable agriculture#gabe brown i love you#Joel Salatin you are weird but i love you a little bit as well#David r montgomery you are cool#Those are three authors i recommend if you havent read books by them already#the first two are famous farmers

A couple of weeks ago I asked about people’s favorite book or books they read this year. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too. The most recommended books were How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler, one or all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, because if there’s one thing my friends have in common across platforms, it’s that you’re all nerds (affectionate). Enjoy, and I hope you find your new favorite book!

Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming
