Also hi vis/protective clothing fetishes. The blocky shapes were influenced by the collages and drawings made from the research…Patterns were created in these blocky, chunky shapes then stretched, folded, twisted and distorted like kicks and amens to fit the body. The colours clearly just hi vis; the embroidery some cybergoth meets gabba tekno styleee. It was all made with a sense of this primal, cathartic feeling about hardcore music and ravey stuff- love & violence, sweating & raging, dancing & chanting. These are all basic human needs. I also worked at cyberdog at the time and was very stressed and sped up and naive back then, so there’s that. Gothic of gabber

week van 30/04

Als eerste ben ik deze twee muziekstijlen eens gaan opzoeken. Ik kende ze allebei, maar ik wist niet goed wat ze inhielden.

Gothic heeft zijn oorsprong in Groot-Brittannië en is ontstaan in de late jaren 70 van de 20e eeuw. Iets typisch bij zowel de oorspronkelijke rock als de subgenres is het donkere geluid en de melancholische sfeer. Het wordt gekenmerkt door zware baslijnen, de bombastische en intense drums, het trage tempo (meestal tussen 60 en 120 bpm) en het toepassen van effecten als echo en nog vele andere. Ook de zang klinkt zwaarmoedig. Zowel mannen als vrouwen zingen heel erg laag. Een veelvoorkomend thema bij gothic is duister. Het is eerder gericht op de persoonlijke, emotionele beleving.Het gaat vaak over romantiek, zelfdoding, horror, emotionele pijn, mythologie enz.

Gabber (ook wel hardcore house, hardcore of gabberhouse genoemd) staat bekend als de snelste en hardste techno of housemuziek. Kenmerkend hiervoor is het snelle en harde bassdrumtempo (tussen 160 en 200 bpm) en heeft meestal een vierkwartsmaat als ritme. Het is vooral bekend in Nederland, dit is ook de oorsprong. Er bestaat ook een gabbercultuur met gabbers of gappies. Deze kan je herkennen aan de kledingstijl en het kapsel. Uiteraard houden deze mensen ook van gabbermuziek. Een bijpassende dansstijl wordt hakken genoemd. Hiervan heb ik ook nog even een filmpje.

Hieruit kiezen was niet zo moeilijk. Het zijn eigenlijk twee totaal tegenovergestelde muziekstijlen. Gothic is eerder donker en duister. Het geeft een grillige, koude en angstaanjagende sfeer. Terwijl gabber je eerder opgewekt en blij maakt. Ik vin wel dat gabber (al ik het zo mag zeggen) nogal ‘marginaal’ overkomt, maar dat is mijn menig en dat maakt de stijl ook zo speciaal. Mijn keuze gaat duidelijk uit naar gabber, gewoon omdat ik niet zo van die enge duistere sfeer hou zoals bij gothic.
