via Today Bharat nbsp; But the Vokkaliga strongman may not have much time for state politics as he may be hounded by CBI and IT depts. Senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar after his release from Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Thursday. His brother and MP D.K. Suresh is seen.Bengaluru: The return of former minister D.K. Shivakumar to Bengaluru on Saturday after 50 days in judicial and Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in Delhi in a money laundering case, is likely to charge party workers, whose morale is already high after the Congress' performance in the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly polls. While party insiders say it is too early to predict what effect his return will have on the coming Karnataka assembly by-elections in December, they believe he is likely to emerge stronger in the long run in party politics as he has demonstrated his loyalty by spurning the BJP's overtures at heavy personal cost. nbsp; Some believe he could prove a challenge to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, whose hold on the state Congress has grown stronger with former Union minister Mallikarjun Kharge losing the parliamentary elections and the Income Tax raids on former Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwar's medical college. While Mr Siddaramaiah enjoys the support of former Congress president Rahul Gandhirsquo;s young turk brigade comprising of KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao, Krishna Byregowda and others, AICC interim president Sonia Gandhi reposed her faith in old Congress leaders in the recent Maharashtra and Haryana assembly polls. This is likely to continue in Karnataka with those who were sidelined over the last seven years being given more responsibilities, according to sources. Also, with JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy gunning for Mr Siddaramaiah, the party may have to rely heavily on Mr Shivakumar, who is on good terms with both, to keep its former alliance partner in good humour and stop it from leaning the BJP way. But to his disadvantage, the former minister may not have much time for state politics or campaigning for the December 5 by-elections as if not the ED, he could be hounded by the CBI and income tax departments. The CBI has already registered an FIR against him in relation to some of his decisions as the state's energy minister and obtained the Yediyurappa government's permission to investigate him. Moreover, the ED on Friday filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court's decision to grant him bail, which is likely to come up for hearing on November 5 when the court reopens after a vacation. ...

Kodagu (Karnataka) [India], Nov 9 (ANI): Anger ran high here on Saturday on the occasion of birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan as scores of people took to streets to oppose Karnataka government's decision to go ahead with the celebration, which was introduced by then Congress Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in 2015. Several other groups of protesters have also decided to first offer prayers at Sri Omkareshwara temple and then will carry out a procession against the celebrations. Taking the cognizance of the prevailing tense situation, the security has been beefed up in Madikeri. Not only residents, but several political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Codava National Council have also called for a shutdown in the region to register their protest against the celebrations. Speaking to ANI, PI Srividya, Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, said the police have made all requisite arrangements to maintain law and order in the region. "We have taken all precautionary measures. If somebody violates law and order, the police will take strict action against him." Each year Tipu Jayanti creates a rift among political outfits over the celebration of his birthday. Basically, Tipu Sultan is considered as a freedom fighter by the coalition government in Karnataka but he is treated as a religious "bigot" by the BJP and its supporting organisations. Taking on Karnataka government, BJP's district unit secretary Sajjal Krishnan alleged that the coalition government in the state was playing appeasement politics to garner the support of a section of the society. "The government is wasting public money in the name of Tipu Jayanti. Tipu was not a warrior. He killed so many Hindus and attacked temples. Why are they glorifying a man like him? This is only vote bank politics. Everyone in Kodagu is opposing the celebrations," he said. BJP spokesperson C T Ravi also tweeted, urging Karnataka government to choose icons like Mirza Ismail or Shishunala Sharief and not a "bigot" like Tipu. Taking to twitter, the BJP Karnataka also stated, "While Cong-JDS government is celebrating a tyrant Tipu, the CM himself goes into hiding. What is the point of celebrating a fanatic when CM himself abandons a govt function? Glorifying a mass murderer just for vote bank clearly shows mindset of this govt." Moments after BJP Karnataka's Tweet, the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO) issued a statement stating that Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is taking rest on doctor's advice and thus is unable to take part in the programme. "It is also far from truth that he isn't taking part due to the fear of losing power, as he opposes such blind beliefs. He has wished the function a grand success," it added. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwar will also not attend the celebrations as he is out of the country and has not returned yet. Responding to criticism, former chief minister Siddaramaiah said: "Tipu's opponents have to remove their communal glasses to see the true Tipu Sultan. For this, the BJP leaders have to read the book on Tipu Sultan." (ANI)

Battle for Karnataka: Congress' biggest challenges lie within, not in BJP
Congress has dubious distinction of snatching defeat from jaws of victory, mainly due to differences within – the one between Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy G Parameshwar is an example.
Karnataka Elections 2018 : If there is one party that can be called an expert at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, it is the Congress. Talking of Karnataka, the story of the state government and party here is actually one of differences between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy (and party chief for a long time) G Parameshwar.
The two leaders have not seen eye to eye for a long time – since much before the party came to power in May 2013. In a way, it was the Congress’ considerable majority that led to the disagreements being made public. Siddaramaiah upstaged Parameshwar to become chief minister – after the latter lost his own seat from the Koratgere Assembly constituency in what appeared to be a Congress wave, and earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first party chief in 50 years to lose his own seat. This was after Rahul Gandhi campaigned extensively in the district.
Like past state party presidents like S M Krishna and Dharam Singh had gone on to become CMs, Parameshwar thought he could lay a legitimate claim to that office. Siddaramaiah could see the writing on the wall: Parameshwar’s supporters claimed it was Siddaramaiah who engineered the defeat by telling his own Kuruba community voters to vote en bloc for the rival JD(S) candidate rather than party colleague Parameshwar.
The rift between the two deepened when Siddaramaiah turned down the demand for making Parameshwar deputy chief minister or even minister in his Cabinet. The high command had to intervene to make Parameshwar deputy chief minister – though no one seems to know what a deputy chief minister’s powers are.
As Siddaramaiah is considered a newcomer in the ruling Congress, having joined only in 2005 after revolting against JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda, many old or senior Congressmen were already cut-up that their claims for the top (CM’s) post were ignored. Conscious that he was swimming in a sea of sharks, Siddaramaiah tried to swiftly consolidate his position: He unilaterally announced the Annabhagya (Re 1 per kg rice scheme to BPL families), which cost Rs 4,300 crore annually to the state exchequer, wrote off loans and additional subsidy to milk producers hours after he took oath as CM. He cut Parameshwar and other party leaders out of the deal, though all these promises were in the party’s 2013 manifesto.

via Today Bharat nbsp; Bengaluru: A month after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar in a money laundering Congress, another central agency, the Income Tax department on Thursday raided the offices, medical and engineering colleges, hospital and residences of senior Congressman and former deputy chief minister Dr G. Parameshwar suspecting rampant corruption in the allocation of management quota seats for medical and engineering courses. Sources said the managements of colleges run by the Congress bigwig had allegedly collected crores of rupees in cash to allot the seats. nbsp; Sleuths of the I-T department conducted simultaneous raids in Bengaluru, Koratagere in Tumakuru, Nelamangala and Kolar and scrutinised documents besides questioning the deans of the colleges. Dr Parameshwarrsquo;s family runs the Siddhartha Group of Institutions which was established by his father H.M. Gangadharaiah 58 years ago. The team of I-T officers reached Dr Parameshwarrsquo;s residence in Sadashivanagar, a prime locality in Bengaluru city Thursday morning and conducted the raid with the help of the local police. They also raided Siddhartha Technical University and Siddhartha Education institutions in Tumakuru city locking the college doors before verifying documents. Dr Parameshwar was reportedly not present at the time of the raids. Senior Congress leaders including former chief minister Siddaramaiah and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda condemned the raids. Siddaramaiah tweeted, ldquo; The series of IT raids on @Dr Parameshwara, RL Jalappa amp; others, are politically motivated with malafide intention.rdquo; ldquo; They are only targeting @INCKarnataka leaders as they have failed to face us on policy amp; corruption issues. We wonrsquo;t budge to any such tactics!!rdquo; he added. Gowda said ldquo;itrsquo;s condemnable, rdquo; without elaborating. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge termed the raids as ldquo;vengeance politicsrdquo;. ldquo; They are trying to terrify Congress leaders. They want to convey to Congress workers that whoever wishes to join the Congress should take note of it,rdquo; he said.
