not to bnha on main but I'm thinking about fuyumi
#i havent seen all of s..6? we're on s6 right? whatever#nor have i read the manga#but i know enough spoilers to be in LOVE with my girl#and i have a fic rattling around in my brain that i dont have enough context for#so spoilers bnha manga if u care abt that#but learning that fuyumi and touya are twins Changed Me because its about the FUCKING SIBLING TRAUMA (2.0)#its about twin's quirks being switched in the womb its about being born next to your best friend and your worst enemy#its about fuyumi wanting her family to be functional instead of the fucking dumpster fire it is#because she already lost touya she cant lose natsuo and shouto too#endeavors like 'trying his best' or whatever but i dont think she.. cares all that much about him.#her being cordial is like glacial politeness. the casual wielding of words.#plus she has such an interesting character set up???#her twin brother is being brutally trained and shes a child and cannot do anything about it#her mother takes her under her wing and tries to teach her the unspoken rules of women in this household#fuyumi hears her twin soul scream bloody murder and cannot lift a finger. she must learn how to sew#then her next brother is born and she thinks of all the ways she cant protect him. but his quirk appears.. similar to hers#shes so desperately relieved. her twin receives new scars every day.#shouto is born. her and her mother stare at each other silently in the home because they know what this will mean.#fuyumi is 12 years old when her mother is sent away. her baby brother throws up because of her father pushing him too hard#fuyumi is now the woman of the house. she is 12. she is a child#touya is gone. hes dead. her twin brother died (because of her father. they all knew touyas weakness)#fuyumi is the eldest. she has to be the glue sticking them together. she makes meals for her scarred brothers.#she is silent. she is scorned for her lack of anger.#who has space for anger when you must become a mother at 12?#fuyumi is an incredible character and if the writer (horikoshi?) wasnt so SHIT at writng female character arcs maybe he would have realized#😭😭😭#ollie rambles#me being true to my tag#FUCK i love fuyumi#sibling relationships always take me tf out but these tragic ones are perfect

Can you do yuuichi ootori for the 20 hc thing 🤗
My boy!!! My favorite Ootori!!!
Fun fact I’ve tried to post this twice and the app crashed both times. 🤞.
1.) Like I said with Kyoya, the Ootoris are new money. Yoshio’s grandparents were farmers prior to WW1 and then stumbled into a fortune. Yuichi is the only sibling old enough to remember their great grandparents, who died when he was 7.
2.) Yuichi is the most down to earth Ootori, mostly because his Great Grandma Kyoko would come back from the dead and bitch slap him if he started acting high and mighty.
3.) Yuichi is a dog person in a house full of cat people.
4.) Yuichi is Akito, Fuyumi, and Kyoya’s half brother from Yoshio’s first marriage to his childhood sweetheart. He inherited the company shortly after Yuichi was born and decided his wife wasn’t fitting of his status. He quietly divorced her and married a richer woman, who had Akito and Fuyumi two years later. None of the siblings know that Yuichi has a different mother.
5.) Yuichi has always been Fuyumi’s partner in crime, with her getting them into trouble and him talking them out of it. This dynamic continued into adulthood, but now almost exclusively applies to their father.
6.) Even though he loves his siblings, Yuichi can never remember how old Kyoya is. Every time he guesses, he’s always a few years younger than the actual answer. It’s the oldest to youngest child dynamic (speaking as the oldest of four myself)
7.) Yuichi is bad at lying but very good at bending the truth. He can omit information like a pro but if you ask him to tell a bold faced lie he will immediately start sweating.
8.) While he was in university, Yuichi fell in love with a Psychology student a year above him. The feeling was mutual and he wanted to marry her, but knew his father wouldn’t approve because (while wealthy) she wasn’t rich enough for the Ootoris. The relationship never went anywhere, but the two are still in contact and at 29, Yuichi Ootori remains suspiciously unmarried.
9.) Up until Kyoya’s mall trip, Yuichi was undefeated as the only Ootori siblings to have ever eaten a meal from McDonald’s.
10.) Yuichi has a one sided tension with Akito. While has adored Yuichi practically since birth, Yuichi sometimes feels resentment for Akito solely based on the pressure his father put on both of them to compete for the title of being the heir to the Ootori name. He feels awful for this resentment, especially considering how Akito comes to him with everything.
11.) The rest of the Ootori siblings come to him for advice on everything since he is the least likely out of all of them to tell their father.
12.) Yuichi’s policy on what Kyoya does is a lot more lax than the other members of the family. If he sees Kyoya doing something “unfitting of his status” he will immediately turn around so he can deny he ever saw him. It’s the unspoken “go ahead, I saw nothing” when he very obviously caught him sneaking out to do teenager bullshit. And, true to his word, he will keep his mouth shut. That is unless he finds out it’s illegal, dangerous, or stupid in a way that isn’t funny. Even then he doesn’t tell their dad or say anything to Kyoya himself. Instead he will run his mouth to Tachibana. He knows who Kyoya actually listens to.
13.) His approach to his other siblings in adulthood is “did you add or subtract from the population? No? Then please don’t tell me”. He will help them out of a situation but for the love of god please don’t give him ALL the details. As long as no one gets arrested and dad isn’t pissed, then all is well.
14.) As shown above, Yuichi actively hates being in the know about most topics that don’t concern him. It makes him feel out of control.
15.) Yuichi’s third year at ouran was also Akito and Fuyumi’s first. He spent most of the year keeping them out of trouble.
16.) Mr. Ootori’s computer password is Yuichi’s birthdate in numerical order.
17.) Yuichi is 6’4 and is the tallest Ootori.
18.) Yuichi minored in history in college, which is the field he wanted to go into before his father had him go to medical school instead.
19.) A lot of people have described Yuichi as “too gentle” for the line of work he is in.
20.) When Kyoya was born, Tachibana would sneak Yuichi into the nursery so he could see his baby brother. He was the only Ootori sibling interested in doing so.

Todoroki Kids Quirk Theory
Enji Todoroki, AKA Flame Hero: Endeavor, who has a very strong fire Quirk called “Hellflame”, wishes to beat the Symbol of Peace: All Might at all costs, but he realized that his Quirk and strength alone wouldn’t be able to do that since All Might was always two steps ahead of him.
So, he decided to create the “perfect” offspring that will be able to defeat All Might in his name. A child with a devastating strong Quirk that will take the spot as Number One Hero and never let anyone take it away from them.
Enji searched for a woman with a Quirk as strong as his or that will complement it in the child, and he found one.
A woman with snowy, pure white hair with  — ironically — an ice Quirk, Rei. He saw an incredible display of said Quirk if he took the decision to make a child with her, that or her family is one of generations of strong ice-based Quirk users.
Enji then bribed Rei’s family into allowing her to marry him and create a powerful successor. And as Rei didn’t have a say in this, their Quirk Marriage set sail. And eventually they had four children, few of which we already know of, if just slightly.
And in this post, I will theorize said children’s (possible) Quirks.
Tumblr media
(I wrote this jazz on a notebook like,, three or two years ago so I thought why not post it here as wrong as I may be with it,,,have patience fam,,)
From older to younger would be; Touya, Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shouto, with each of them having an age gap of 3-4 years (a bit on the fence with Touya and Fuyumi here, since we don’t know how exactly old he was, so there could be tidbits of the theory that those two are twins).
A rundown of the kids, starting with the firstborn;
Touya Todoroki
Tumblr media
Very little is known about Touya, even simple yet crucial facts like his hair color are confusing due to the Manga and Anime adaptation. What we do know is;
He had red hair.
A fire Quirk stronger than Endeavor’s but a body that couldn’t withstand it.
He died at a very young age of either 12 or 14/15 by causes most likely related to said Quirk.
To add to his weak constitution inherited by Rei, Touya looks to be the shortest out of all his siblings, despite being the oldest. I’d also say he was he meekest of them all, if only for a few years if I go by his body language in the two (2) full images we’re given ( i.e. clinging onto natsuo’s shirt, keeping his arms close to his body, hair covering his face— namely his eyes, likely to avoid making direct eye-contact with endeavor):
I’m personally inclined to believe that he had Enji’s turquoise eyes too, seeing as either his eyes or hair seem to be a distinct telltale sign of the fiery factor of his Quirk. and then boom he had gray eyes all along,, or either sectoral-heterochromia, or central heterochromia and the manga is deceiving us
Fuyumi Todoroki
Tumblr media
The one and only girl of the four siblings while also the second born of Enji and Rei. Like her older brother, Fuyumi’s colors (her eyes) differ from the Manga and the Anime, but since we’re following the latter’s palette...
She has gray eyes like her mother behind a pair of red glasses.
Has mostly spiky/messy white hair with red streaks.
She is a primary school teacher.
Her behavior is more like Rei’s; soft-spoken and kind.
As another color-fact, out of everyone else in the family, she’s the only to use colors related to red (any color of that palette, contrary to her younger brothers that deliberately seem to avoid anything related to that color, and so use mostly cold tones).
She can’t handle hot weather.
Her Quirk is unknown, if she even has one, but it should’ve been deemed weak or useless by Endeavor if she wasn’t put through the training Touya was, therefore becoming the first of her brothers to suffer from his neglect.
Natsuo Todoroki
Tumblr media
Natsuo seems to be the most hellbent and prominent out of his siblings on his hate for their father, voicing his thoughts about him at any given chance, and also the one that looks closest to Rei.
Pure snowy white hair, but spiky like Enji’s.
Gray eyes, fully resembling his mother with nothing red that could remind him of his father, unlike his frame which is bulky like Endeavor’s.
Repressed anger issues.
He feels sensitive towards warm weather.
The tallest out of all his siblings.
Funny enough, Natsuo is a combination of Rei’s looks and Enji’s muscular build. Any signs of a Quirk are unknown, but either way he was deemed useless and thrown into the burning pile along with his big sister.
Shouto Todoroki
Tumblr media
The golden egg of the Todo Children. The one Enji could, after so much time, call his masterpiece, the perfect offspring to finally topple All Might off his high horse. Everything Touya failed to be, Shouto is. A perfect combination of both himself and Rei.
Perfectly split white and red hair.
A gray eye and distinctive turquoise eye.
Ice and fire.
Shouto’s Quirk is Half-Cold Half-Hot; allowing him to create ice and fire from his right and left side respectively. He needs the two sides of his Quirk to nullify their drawbacks; too much of the right side leads to frostbite or hypothermia, too much of the left side leads to either overheating, dehydration or self-burns.
Now that we know the Todo-kids, their personalities, and Quirk too (or lack thereof), let’s dive into theorizing of the lacking two;
Fuyumi and Natsuo   — The Flukes
Tumblr media
Going off of appearances, I’d say Fuyumi could be the exact opposite of Touya. While having Rei’s eyes and most of her white hair, I’d say she could have her same ice Quirk but not being able to withstand it. Contrary to Touya that has Enji’s fire Quirk, but a constitution more adapt for ice.
I.e. She could create ice as strong as Rei’s, but the constitution of her body is weak and causes her to easily fall into a light to severe case of frostbite or hypothermia. Or on the other hand, she can create ice, but isn’t as strong as Rei’s, thereof a disappointment. On the third hand I just pulled out of my ass; an extremely weak fire Quirk, a constitution more suited for ice.
Natsuo is a more complicated case here. He looks nothing like Endeavor aside from his jock build, He looks like Rei down to a tee, and that makes me think of three possibilities for his Quirk.
He is resistant to ice AND fire, but isn’t able to manipulate them in any way.
He is able to resist and create ice, and seeing as he only had Rei’s part of the Quirk, labelled as an immediate failure for Endeavor.
Or the option I have no compelling argument for but I’m really bias to believe: He’s Quirkless, plain and simple. If this one’s the real deal, then it’s likely that he’d be the BIGGEST disappointment out of all the other kids to Enji. I mean, one thing is having just one side, but not having neither? In a world were 80% of the world has a Quirk as useless as it may be?? In his house??? Outrageous!
Any of these options lead to immediate alienation of his family so either is acceptable tbh.
SO! To try and wrap this whole mess up with some nice percentages!
Touya is a 100% of both of his parents’ 50%
Being able to create fire but with a constitution more adapt to ice.
Fuyumi could be/is a 100% of her parents’ 50%
Being able to create ice — that could or not be stronger than Rei’s — but having a constitution more adapt for fire. Therefore, if Endeavor ever tried to train her, she’d have no visible burn marks whatsoever.
Natsuo could be/is a 100% of his parents’ 50%
Being able to withstand fire and ice but not manipulate them in any way.
Or the unfortunate one, being part of the 20% of humanity that doesn’t have a Quirk.
Shouto is a 200% of his parents’ 100%
Being able to resist AND create both fire and ice to an extent as long as he uses one to counter the side effects of the other. I.e. using too much fire might get him a third-degree burn if his ice doesn’t cools down the effects and keeping his body temperature at bay. Having a constant balance between the two, one not being able to work fully well without the other — as much as he hates it.
yeah that’s it thanks for coming to my ted talk please message me with things to write gdi i’m bored and scared for the hobo man

BNHA 250: This is going to be messy.
Ok, lighthearted things first.
Tumblr media
Fuyumi thanking Deku is so wholesome, though Izuku is supposed to be taller. I guess she was standing on a step, but this makes Izuku look so tiny. We get it, he's baby.
Tumblr media
Todoroki gets along with Uraraka and Kirishima. They're close enough for him to be aware of their schedules. He has come a long way from the time we met him and I'm so proud. (And since they were mentioned we can hope they appear in this arc as well, perhaps...?).
Todoroki is good at english while the subject is Midoriya's weak spot. I want to see them have to speak it one day. Also, they canonically study together, TodoDeku nation, how are we feeling?
LMAO, BAKUGOU'S STILL THE BEST. Why the car so small, though? Mr. No. 1?
Tumblr media
That driver is hilarious. I also thought he was Endeavor when I saw the scans. What's with the mustache, man? It's a different color than his hair, so he also has a fire mustache? I'm curious if Endeavor only hires people that have something somewhat similar to him.
The new information about Touya and Natsuo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before that, Fuyumi looks so sad and it's breaking my heart.
So, Touya and Natsuo were really close. We already figured that much, but this opens the question if Dabi (or Geten, if you're into that theory) will come for him when the shit show begins. I don't think he'd just abandon his little brother, so more drama for the Todoroki household is expected. Yay!
Also, we have the confirmation that Touya "died" by the same time Rei was hospitalized (poor woman, she went through a lot), so Shoto was 5, Natsuo was 9 and Fuyumi was 12 (probably). Touya had a middle school uniform and Fuyumi didn't call him older brother (thought it could be a translation thing) so I think is confirmed that Touya is her twin. Though he could also be a year younger, Endeavor could've had children like a normal person at beginning y'know.
Tumblr media
Seeing Kacchan just sit and talk so calmly about a heavy subject is so weird, by the way. I love my not-so-angry-this-time child.
He always sees when someone is having an internal crisis, either because he's really perceptive or just walked in at that moment.
And Natsuo, damn, he looks so defeated, so utterly hurt.
I'm sad, again.
Ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this villain is a suicidal maniac. There's probably something bad that's going to come out from this fight.
He admires Endeavor, he glorifies his power and somehow decided that if he was going to hit the bucket, he wanted his hero to do it.
I don't need to say it, but dude's sick and needs help. And now Natsuo's life is on the line. Heroes don't kill, but he's making sure Endeavor has no other choice. However, the Holy Trio is there, something Ending definitely did not consider. I believe they going to play a big part in the next chapters.
(And Endeavor has a great memory, what the hell)
(Plus Ending said he went straight there after being released, are hero houses so easy to find? How are their whole families not endangered all the time?)
Finally.
Inicially I wanted that villain to be one of Dabi's lackeys. Kidnapping Natsuo to offer him a place at his side. Now, I don't really know where this arc is leading. And really hope this arc's purpose is not "heal the Todorokis and make them a happy family again". That would be... too rushed. For them to recover would take a lot of time and a lot of effort. And they'd probably never be the type of happy family Fuyumi and Enji wish for.
Because Natsuo and Endeavor are forced to face each other this time, maybe this is the moment they confront each other about their feelings, specifically about the whole Touya situation.
I hope this is the time Endeavor gets punished. A real wake up call.
This could be really good, but also go south really easily. Possibly going to end somewhere in between. Horikoshi, you're being careful, right?

(( I realized that I never actually posted this but here are some of my thoughts on the types of abuse each of the dads on this blog have engaged in
This is really long...names are bolded if you want to read a specific muse’s section ))
Disclaimer: I want to start by saying I am writing this from the perspective of someone that has not experienced parental abuse of any kind. I do have a bachelor's in psychology, but it wasn’t clinical track and abuse was not my area of concentration. Neither was child psych.
There are seven main types of parental abuse physical, mental, emotional, verbal, financial, sexual and spiritual. I don’t think ANY of my muses have engaged in sexual abuse against their children. Against others, possibly, but not their children. You’re free to disagree with me and have your own headcanons on this matter, but for the purposes of this blog no sexual abuse was committed against their children. I also don’t believe that spiritual was a component either.
If I am mistaken or forgetting something please let me know.
Gabriel- Mainly neglect/ignoring. He has very few interactions with Adrien and those he does are brief and generally not positive. Gabriel doesn’t acknowledge or reward Adrien’s successes or even discuss his life on a day to day basis. But there’s also lots of emotional, mental and verbal abuse. Isolation is the most extreme. Adrien had to beg to be able to go to school like the rest of his peers and even after he starts attending the rest of his schedule is strict and Gabriel is in complete control of it. Also controlling when Adrien is allowed to leave, rarely letting him out of the house for anything he deems ‘not important’. There is also very little physical warmth any time Adrien hugs his father Gabriel is extremely uncomfortable. I previously thought physical abuse was not present, but after Chat Blanc I have to question. He knew Cat Noir was Adrien and still hit him across Paris, sure he knew it wouldn’t kill his son...but still. I imagine physical was probably a last resort. (A slap)
One thing I don’t think people think about much is I truly believe Gabriel sees Adrien as an extension of himself. He can also fence, speak Japanese and play the piano. Adrien doesn’t seem to have any interest in these activities but performs them anyways.
Madarame- Financial abuse is the most predominant. Consistently he didn’t tell Yusuke what his art actually sold for and likely did this with his other pupils as well. He also probably gave Yusuke very little money for food, essentials and supplies while leading him to believe that they were truly struggling. That just giving him that was already asking for a lot.
We know that Yusuke was aware that something wasn’t right with the other pupils so I imagine that he witnessed arguments between Madarame and the others. Considering how long he “turned a blind eye” I imagine Madarame may have gaslit him and lied about the argument. I don’t believe physical abuse was present. It was much easier for Madarame to play on Yusuke’s sympathy and fondness.
Okumura- Exploitation is big here. He clearly only saw his daughter as a tool. To be married off for his own gain. He was at least aware that Sugimura wasn’t a good person and didn’t care. Whenever something happened between Haru and Sugimura he always blamed her and said that she had to apologize. He truly doesn’t care what Haru wants and lied to her about the consequences of refusing to comply. Okumura is very dismissive of Haru and talks over her.
Shido- While he wasn’t part of Goro’s life up until age 16 and wasn’t aware that Akechi was his son I don’t feel that him knowing would have changed anything. Even in the capacity of being Goro’s employer, he’s extremely manipulative. Constantly demanding Goro perform heinous acts for him. I wouldn’t doubt that he consistently threatened to expose Goro’s crimes for failure to perform/obey, but also promised rewards for compliance. He also demands that Goro put his requests above anything else.
I have written an au where he did raise Goro (though a nanny handled most of his care) where physical abuse occurred frequently with the mentality that he truly wouldn’t learn without it. He also basically raises Goro to be exactly like him. He keeps his son to an unattainable standard of behavior, dress, speech, and achievement. Nitpicks and gets him to ignore interests and socializing in order to receive praise. He also denies that Goro has any lasting mental trauma after his mother committed suicide and refuses to allow him to see a mental health professional.
Jack- A little bit harder to define here. A combo of physical and financial. He was using Angel to further his own goals which did physically hurt her to the point where death was preferable. However, I believe that Jack felt considerable guilt over it. That he never truly wanted to hurt his daughter. It is revealed that one reason behind keeping her contained was that Angel did not have excellent control of her Siren powers after they manifested. He is furious after she’s killed.
Odin- The main problem here is favoritism. Thor was always put on a pedestal, but Loki never measured up. Thor received all the praise and affection from Odin while Loki got very little if any. Likely Loki felt extremely unwanted for most of his life and in order to gain his father's attention started acting out. Odin consistently makes jabs at Loki and put down talents that Loki prides himself on. There’s always comparison between Thor and Loki though he claims to have treated them equally. Even behaviors that were praised for Thor were criticized for Loki. The desire to rule and conquer.
He also just ollies out with Hela like “You handle my failure.” Which is an avoidance of responsibility. He even outright says to Loki at one point “Your birth rite was to die” and that he is the only reason Loki is still alive. Odin really only views Loki as an unwanted child that never stopped acting out.
AFO- There is a prevailing belief that All for One lied to Tomura about how his family died. As the chapter about Tomura’s backstory is titled differently than the other villains. If this is the case then there is severe memory manipulation and gaslighting. Tomura was originally a pretty sweet kid. He liked to play heroes with other kids, so in order to create a successor, AFO had to destroy that. To twist him into the angry and vengeful adult we see now.
AFO definitely sees Tomura as an extension of himself and thus why he’s willing to offer so much for the other to succeed. One thing I do find odd is how accepting of failure AFO is. Any time Tomura fails he simply encourages the other to try again.
Enji/Endeavor- The biggest physical abuse perpetrator. By nature Enji is a very intimidating person, he prides himself on being large and imposing if he’s willing to use that against villains then he likely also willing to use it against his family. We know for a fact that he was “training” Shoto and we believe Toya as well. I imagine that he would go as far as to trap them in the training room until he felt their performance was satisfactory. Withholding food was a possible punishment when his expectations weren’t meant.
Enji is very easy to enrage. I imagine that his anger and voice were big pieces of the abuse. Fuyumi always seems to be treading carefully whenever she speaks to him.
He also isolated Shoto from his other siblings the “failures”. So there were some elements of mental, emotional and verbal abuse as well. We see the effects of that label on Fuyumi and Natsuo well into adulthood. Sources

Todoroki Family p2, Rei
So, so far post season three I have done the main wrap up for the season, Todoroki Shouto (and a post about his scar), Dabi (as well as my take on Dabi is Touya all in one post), and I’ve done Katsuki Bakugo, and Midoriya Izuku. I talked about the UA Traitor here! I talked about All for One/One for All the quirks a bit I also did a ramble-y meta post about the Todoroki Family but that is more manga than anime, so be warned!
... The last one is only getting linked because today as the title indicates we’re going to talk on a very broad level about how Rei may be a victim, but she definitely still shoulders some guilt for what happened here. And also my thoughts on Rei’s (maybe, eventual?) arc in general.
Still to come on the headcanon front:The Doctor and Quirks, just in general. I’m sure I’ll find other stuff to discuss too.
Be warned this post references domestic abuse and also child abuse. It is not graphic but I can’t have this discussion without referring to it. Please read with caution as these are sensitive topics.
I could write for ages on why I don’t like Endeavor and why Endeavor’s redemption arc may be something I was demanding but it’s not something I actually care to see. You’ll likely hear all about it as the story goes on. But today, we’re going to talk about Rei.
Please note when I reference ages I’m working from my semi-established timeline from the Dabi-is-Touya theory post quoted here: ("Shouto is the youngest at 15, Natsuo is 19, and a college student. Fuyumi is 22 and a teacher. Considering that was still early in their marriage, he could be 23/24 and that would still fit into the window of Dabi’s “early twenties”. So let’s call him 23, just a year older than Fuyumi, for the purpose of the rest of this discussion.”) I’m using that particular reference because it gives us one of the shortest timelines for these four kids, and you’ll get an idea of what I mean here.
Tumblr media
So let’s jump right in. Rei is a victim, I’m not arguing against that. I am in no way saying she wasn’t abused (god she was, we’re looking at most likely some seriously dubious consent in having these kids, never mind as Shouto says “she was always crying” and the few flashbacks we have also indicate that she likely fought with Enji to *try* and protect her children).
I’m also not going to stand here and pretend that getting away from Enji would have been easy, or that her remaining there wasn’t, you know, a completely believable thing, as terrible as it was. It’s not easy to get away from an abuser. And Enji is a very powerful man. But I do have to wonder... like maybe we’ll learn she did try and like some domestic abuse cases are, they were just swept under the rug. But I do have to wonder why she didn’t reach out for help at any point before the night she snapped.
We know she was trying to get help that night, she was talking to her mom and telling the other woman that she didn’t think she could do this, didn’t think she could raise the kids any more because they were getting more and more like Enji. Was that the first call? We don’t know, maybe it was, or maybe her mother just kept telling her to suck it up, or that she was overreacting, or something.
What we do know is that Rei put up at least a token resistance against Shouto being trained too harshly, and so we can (hopefully) assume that she did the same for Touya. But by the time Shouto’s training came around, Rei had been going through this for around 12 years.
That’s a long time to tell yourself he loves you when you know it’s a lie and that things will get better, and a long ass time to put up with what was going on in that house and the way he treated her and her children. Emphasis on her children, actually, because that is what we see her step up about, the way he’s pushing Shouto too hard because he’s too young.
12 years of the same behavior, with each of her children. Now, I know, I said before we don’t know if she sought help before. Maybe she was afraid he’d do her very real damage if she tried. We don’t know.
But being realistic, not trying at all, if that’s truly what happened, is almost as bad as doing it herself. Failure to report a crime is not the same as committing it, no, but it is it’s own crime. Now. I don’t know the specifics of the laws in japan and doing some research involved a lot of dead ends thanks to the fact that I don’t read Japanese with any fluency at all.
We know Rei was a source of love and comfort for her children, iirc Shouto does indeed depict her in a very positive light when he talks about her. It’s clear he loves her.
This doesn’t make her blameless.
I’ve noticed the fandom likes to heap blame on Enji - and while I agree he deserves it - it sometimes goes to the level of forgetting/ignoring that Rei is the one that poured boiling water on Shouto. That burn didn’t come from Enji training him too harshly, or being angry because he couldn’t pull off whatever move he was trying to teach him this time. It came from Rei.
Now. Enji obviously was the main source of Rei’s instability. Shouto (and thus the audience) blame Enji for what happened because yes, he is the one that pushed her over the edge. This makes sense.
It still doesn’t take the fact that she is the one that did it away.
Do I think that any of the kids are ever going to put blame on her? No. No, I highly doubt it honestly. Legally the situation seems to have been deemed more-or-less not her fault by way of insanity, and this is why she’s in a hospital and not, you know, prison.
You know what that doesn’t change? How Rei feels about what happened that night. And after the breadcrumbs we’ve been given about Rei, I’m banking on “pretty terrible” being the answer to that.
And that, my friends, is something Rei is going to have to face before she can actually tackle the road to recovery enough to ever leave the hospital.
If we ever get a Rei arc as anything more than a backdrop to Enji getting a redemption arc, I think that’s going to be what it has to cover, before it can go anywhere else.
So that’s my take on Todoroki Rei as she stands in relation to the family.
