HERE ME THE HECK OUT OKAY-
1. After Scott finds out that Jimmy is/did fuse with other gems, he decides to be petty and refuse to fuse with him anymore (which barely lasted), but this lead him to be able to fuse with Pearl and Cleo. Out of sheer pettiness.
2. Owen and Scott were the first human/gem fusion to happen and it was to stop the Bad Boys gems from doing something extremely stupid.
3. Martyn and Ren fuse in secret, but when other members of their unit began go get suspicious Ren gaslights them (because he's a higher rank) and they mysteriously dispear after a "talk with Martyn"
4. When Scar/Spinel goes evil, they do so because they feel as if they're being forgot as newer gems come around. Him and Grian were the first "defector", and want that bond to be something special. (kinda like Scott's story but instead of just refusing to fuse Scar gives in to his negative emotions)
5. Pearlescentmoon/pearl was meant to be Scott's pearl but they were separated before they actually met, and they find it weird how they get along so well.
6. Impulse and Mumbo will be the first to engage with human life, before immediately trying to kill it. That human being X. He'll get over it tho

My media this week (12-18 Feb 2023)
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 "List of People Who Disappeared Mysteriously at Sea" (Jen Myers) - nicely eerie short story
😊 In The Market For Murder (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #2) (T.E. Kinsey, author; Elizabeth Knowelden, narrator) - again, I'm a fan of the breezy 'not-super-serious-about-historical-accuracy-in-the-small-details' tone; I really like that Flo & Lady H have this backstory/history that we only find small bits about here and there
😍 Same As It Ever Was (QuokkaFoxtrot) - 62K, Steddie - EXCELLENT time-loop fixit AU
🥰 Cabin Pressure - Series 1: Abu Dhabi to Fitton (John Finnemore, author; Stephanie Cole/Roger Allam/Benedict Cumberbatch/John Finnemore, voice cast) - entertained again by the crew of MJN Airlines
😍 Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Steve a Match (BlueSimplicity) - 209K, shrunkyclunks - omegaverse (but fairly nontrad, no mpreg) - the slow burn tag is not inappropriate but also it kind of doesn't FEEL that slow! deep worldbuilding, excellent epistolary component, incredible OC's, the differences/subversions of trad omegaverse tropes gave me clowfish AU vibes, which I loved
😍 Will Wonders Never Cease (PorcupineGirl) - 56K, zimbits AU, You've Got Mail/She Loves Me fusion - magic's real, Bitty's a tech witch with a very cute familiar - read this in one sitting and my face hurt when I was done from smiling so much
🥰 Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue (Cat Sebastian) - novella, set in 1953; to paraphrase the official description: two best friend pro ball players finally figure their shit out, featuring: inclement weather, only one (real) bed and some hurt/comfort. Technically this is set in the Cabot Universe but there are zero Cabots in this one. Cat continues to score home runs on vibes alone. I love her books so, so much!
💖💖 +189K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
I Want You to Find Me (PorcupineGirl) - Check Please!: zimbits, 23K - canon-divergent AU where Bitty's a camboy that catches Jack's attention (while also still being his former teammate and all)
Ruin me (rainbow_nerds) - Stranger Things: steddie, 11K - absolutely cannot get enough of a reunion/2nd chance fic!!!!! fluffy AF!
Critical Feline Mass (Kryptaria, zooeyscigar) - MCU: stucky, 39K - no-powers AU where they're both retired military, Steve rents an apt to a still-struggling-to-reintegrate Bucky & sparks (and feelings) fly. also there are a lot of adorable kittens.

Last Monday of the Week 2023-01-09
Back at it again at the [DATA EXPUNGED]
Listening: Vienna Teng, who I encountered in a fancam for industrial society set to Landsailor someone posted on here. Here it is:
youtube
Landsailor is good, Hymn to Breaking Strain vibes but from a more civilian perspective, it also has some great names for shit, my favourite being "lawbreaker" for heat pumps. Absolutely incredible.
Reading: Halfway through Fugitive Telemetry, I forgot I had it after I finished Network Effect and anyway, Network Effect was good but kinda too long to spend with Murderbot, the short story format definitely fits it better. I do like how it opens with a Murder(bot) Mystery.
Watching: Watched Scott Pilgrim vs. The World for the first time. It's fun to watch something that is so very of its time. A lot like Clerks in that I watched it way later but I can imagine that had my friends and I seen it back in high school we'd all have been insufferably quoting it at each other the way we did Pirates of the Caribbean. Being vegan just makes you better than other people.
The material is. Fine, I knew it was a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl-focussed movie but I had somehow not realized it had the whole evil exes thing. The parts are greater than the whole.
Making: Marathon cooking session for my dad's birthday, preparing a large set of meals with the added bonus of not having electricity for two hours in the middle of the day. Turned out fine. Ovens are great for preparing large quantities of food quickly, you can do a lot of prep up front and the oven is pretty predictable.
Playing: Started but have not finished An Airport for Aliens Currently Run By Dogs, a comedy fetch quest game by Xalavier Nelson Jr. et al, which is about maintaining your long distance relationship with your fiance while being the last two humans in the universe by meeting up in various airports (for aliens (currently run by dogs)).
The basic game loop is that you have A Place you need to get to to meet your fiance or a specific dog, and you can do that by getting a ticket and finding your way to the appropriate terminal. But the airport is entirely written in a made up substitution cipher so until you learn that you're trying to get around from context clues in increasingly bizarre airports. You often have to get Things for different dogs to get them to help you and eventually get your flight, so you have to figure out the right chain of stores to go to to get your flight on time.
It's fun, it's not that long as far as I'm aware, and it is a nice little thing to have to do. I've been playing it in the mornings before work pretty often.
Tools and Equipment: Slowly setting up Linux on my new laptop, as previously mentioned AMD hasn't put out sensor fusion hub drivers for these Renoir CPU's so while I am pursuing that, I have to have some way to do tablet things in the meantime. Enter lisgd(1).
lisgd(1) is a gesture recognition daemon that works with touchscreens. You can configure (through a config.def.h or through command line flags) a set of gestures and commands for them to execute. I've now set up gestures to control volume and screen brightness as well as to enable and disable the keyboard and rotate the screen for tablet mode stuff. Between that you can replicate all the things the sensor fusion hub is meant to be doing.
There are other ways to do gesture recognition but this one has good tuning options and is pretty platform agnostic. You can do things like very carefully adjust how long a gesture has to be to be recognized or what deviation from the ideal angle will still be picked up.
I'll probably end up writing or finding a little panel utility that will make brightness and volume control simpler, maybe even include the rotation settings there too, but for now this works well enough. That panel will still get triggered by a gesture, so lisgd(1) is going to be load bearing.

'...All Of Us Strangers
Mysterious, beautiful and sentimental
FUSE movie pick of the month! More than a decade after Weekend, Andrew Haigh returns with a gay romance that is also somewhat of a ghost story. When screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott, Fleabag) begins a relationship with Harry (Paul Mescal, Aftersun), a mysterious neighbour, Adam finds himself drawn back to his hometown and memories of his long-dead parents.
The Guardian calls All Of Us Strangers “mysterious, beautiful and sentimental” and “a fantasy-supernatural romance about loneliness and love”. And by all accounts, tissues will be required by film’s end...'

The Dragon's Hoard | Indiana Jones
Pairing: Indiana Jones/Original Female Character
Warnings: Graphic Violence, Mature Themes, Fantasy Elements
Word Count: 1,021
A flitting shadow, dark as midnight, rose to meet Indiana Jones' keen sight, and he gasped in surprise - so did his companions Willie Scott and Short Round. Suddenly, a massive, scaly talon, sharp as a butcher's cleaver, clamped down with earth-shaking force at the very lip of the smoldering pit, where rivers of molten lava bubbled and hissed.
Soon, a head the size of a small car emerged from the shadows, a nightmarish fusion of reptile and bat, with leathery skin pulled tight over a skull that seemed almost human in its cruel intelligence. Two baleful, glowing red eyes, like the coals of a dying fire, glared out at the humans, who all screamed "No!" in terror.
The shaman, a wizened old man with a face like a gnarled tree stump, approached the abomination, chanting in a guttural, inhuman tongue. The beast turned its hideous head, sensing the humans' presence, and a guttural, earth-shaking growl curled around the air, like the rumbling of an oncoming train. Indiana Jones swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry as a bone. "W-what is that thing?" he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.
The beast growled and bared its jagged teeth at the shaman, who whispered and left with his lackeys and the cult members who worshipped the god of death, Kali. The creature rose fully out of the lava, its black scales shimmering, red sails swishing atop its head. Its unblinking red eyes fixed Indiana Jones with a piercing glare. "You are not welcome here, Dr. Jones," it growled, its forked tongue slithering out to taste the air. "I…I'm sorry, mistress," Indiana stammered. The beast snorted. "Sure you are. You're here for the stones, are you not? My eggs?" It then thumped its tail around the humans, curling them up. "Well, you may get them, but they will never hatch in this flea-infested place anyway. Now leave, before I decide to have you for dinner!"
Indiana and his friends were trapped, but they knew they had to find a way to escape the beast's lair and retrieve the mysterious stones before the cult could use them for their dark purposes. The creature's warning only made them more determined to uncover the truth behind the ancient artifact and stop the evil forces at work. With his trademark wit and resourcefulness, Indiana would have to outwit both the Nazis and this fearsome reptilian guardian to save the day once again.
~~
As Indiana Jones and his companions fled with the three stones in their bag, I sighed and curled my tongue around the horn on my snout. Finally, I thought to myself. Now I can kill that insidious shaman and his followers who have been pestering me for decades. I turned to face the statue of the nasty god, and then let out a blood-curdling scream as fire tore out of my throat, engulfing the wasteland in a red haze, melting it.
I looked up and laughed, my tail cracking down like a whip, and a hiss escaped my lips as the shaman came running out, screaming, "No, no, no, Kali, no!" I hissed and, without really thinking about it, snapped my jaws shut on his head, devouring him alive. The taste of his terror was exquisite, and I savored every morsel of his screams as I consumed him.
As I crawled out of my hole and followed the scent of Indiana Jones and his companions, I emerged into sunlight that my scales hadn't felt in over a thousand years. "Oh god," whispered a feminine voice, and I snapped my head around, rearing up onto my back legs, teeth bared menacingly.
"No, no, don't hurt her!" stammered Indiana, approaching with his hands raised, the bag of my precious eggs still clutched in his grip. The little kid was there too, and I fixed him with my glowing red eyes. "I see you haven't moved far. Don't you get what you wanted? No—" I stopped short when I saw the shaman's warriors rushing down the hill towards us, and I roared, rising to my full height and spreading my massive, ebony wings.
Without thinking, I unleashed a torrent of searing flame from my cavernous maw, the inferno raging towards the approaching cult members. Their anguished screams pierced the air as they were consumed by the relentless blaze, their flesh melting from their bones. The stench of charred meat hung heavy in the atmosphere, mingling with the acrid stench of smoke.
I turned my attention back to Indiana Jones and his companions, a low, rumbling growl emanating from deep within my chest. The woman cowered in fear, her eyes wide with terror, while the boy stood his ground, his young face set in a mask of determination. Indiana, to his credit, held his ground, meeting my gaze unflinchingly.
"Listen to me," he said, his voice surprisingly steady. "We don't want any trouble. We just want to return these eggs to their rightful place." He held up the bag, and I could feel the faint stirrings of life within. A sense of protectiveness washed over me, and I let out a huff of air, the flames in my throat dying down.
I regarded them for a long moment, weighing my options. These humans had proven themselves to be resourceful and brave, and they had shown respect for my eggs. With a reluctant nod, I gestured with my head towards the path leading deeper into the valley, a clear invitation for them to continue on their way.
Indiana nodded in understanding, and with a final glance back at me, he led his companions down the path, the bag of eggs clutched tightly in his hand. I watched them go, a sense of relief washing over me. My eggs were safe, and the meddlesome cult had been dealt with. With a contented rumble, I turned and made my way back to my lair, ready to settle in for a well-deserved rest.

Todd Mosby Gets Groovy in His New Jazz Song “Place in the Sun”
Jazz guitarist and songwriter Todd Mosby's latest single "Place in the Sun" is a delightful and playful contemporary jazz tune that exudes a sense of spirituality and joyous mystery. With dreamy Sérgio Mendes-stye female vocals, a funk and Motown-like grooving rhythm section, and 1970s jazz fusion musicality, the song showcases Mosby's lyrical and dexterous guitar playing.
Every aspect dances with each other. The bass and the keyboard provide a funky base while the horns and vocals add texture. The song makes the listener feel good from every angle.

The song is part of his upcoming album Land of Enchantment, which offers a sonic look at Mosby's visual, emotive, and spiritual interactions within the borders of New Mexico. "Place in the Sun" pays melodic homage to Tom Scott's "Tom Cat™ album," which was an early inspiration for Mosby.
With an all-star lineup of musicians including drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, saxophonist Tom Scott, bassist Rhonda Smith, keyboardist Dapo Torimiro, vocalist Laura VaII, and two-time Grammy-winning producer Jeff Weber, "Place in the Sun" showcases Mosby's mastery of western composition, jazz improvisation, and Indian raga music forms. Mosby is influenced by St. Louis's vibrantly varied cultural blend of Indian, African-American, and Americana traditions.
"Place in the Sun" is a vibrant and refreshing addition to contemporary jazz, and Mosby's musical journey and unique approach to blending different musical traditions make this a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts.

Additional thoughts of a Halo crossover with some muses, because I love the universe.
Alec and Ellen were both involved with the UNSC and have an extensive service record. Alec is a high-ranking service member and Ellen is a scientist working on the Spartan programs (before she’s presumed to have died in an attack, but she survived; not all too sure how to re-incorporate her though, but Alec and the kids don’t know she’s alive). After the “death” of Ellen, Alec puts himself on the list as a potential Spartan-4 candidate because he wants to dedicate his service to her and protect his kids no matter the cost.
Sara and Scott are regular grunts, but are part of a unique trial-and-error scout team under the Spartan-4 potential candidates program… Not Spartans yet but they’re sent out on live missions as part of their qualifying, and they work as Pathfinders to touch down on Halos and potential colonies.
Eden is UNSC through and through. Her parents served, she served, and eventually she ended up undergoing and completing the Spartan-4 program. To accommodate the special status she has in canon, Eden is a Headhunter.
NOTE: Headhunters are elite V3 (and later on, V4) Spartans who are more lethal than their counterparts, and conduct most of their work behind enemy lines. They can work in duos, or work entirely alone. She works solo.
Valeriya is a rogue V3 Headhunter whose handler (Mikhail) helped her go AWOL.
Mikhail is a scientist working for the Headhunter program, though his alliance with the UNSC is questionable at best. It’s rumored he’s the source for vital data leaks and “mysterious deaths” among UNSC personnel.
Alexey is former UNSC, though his service time was brief because he was put out on a colonized planet that was dedicated to using nuclear fusion to create power for factories, but it was run by capitalists who refused to actually adhere to UN standards, so there was a huge meltdown. Long story short: He helps contain and clean, he’s unpaid and all sorts of fucked up. Now he’s just a civilian looking for some god damn peace… and casually selling off UNSC military data while picking off folks.
And Roman is just… Roman! Street urchin who, after somehow missing Halsey’s eye for kidnapping children, ended up on Alexey’s doorstep. He found out he was related to Alexey, and what happened to him, and decided to work closely with him and be his eyes and ears… Maybe joins the UNSC as a grunt and uses his position to his advantage to get close to folks.

—Peter Dale Scott, “The Social Critic and His Discontents.” The Cambridge Companion to T. S. Eliot. Ed. A. David Moody. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1994.
Continuing to footnote my now-posted modernist centenary essay on Eliot’s The Waste Land and Four Quartets. Above we have a contribution from Peter Dale Scott, a Canadian poet better known, especially in online circles, as a theorist of the deep state and its machinations from the Kennedy assassination to 9/11.
Despite these anti-imperialist practical politics, however, Scott’s defense of the western poetic tradition’s visionary cultural politics—using the canon against the temporal powers, from Dante through Milton to Eliot—stands opposed to the politically-correct disciplining of culture by party and power championed in the Leninist wing of anti-imperialism, itself now discredited (I hope) because of its appropriation by corporatist empire today.
I am fascinated by Scott’s insistence that Eliot in the end defends liberal democracy, though a self-professed classicist in aesthetics, royalist in politics, and Anglo-Catholic in religion. This might be an instance of what Fukuyama discusses, the salvation of liberal society through an inner illiberalism. And I like the phrase “simultaneous defense of liberalism as an attitude, and...critique of it as an ideology.” Whereas with me it is more the opposite: it’s the ideology I’ll defend, the attitude I often dislike.
Eliot’s tripartite self-definition, devised to announce to his modernist public his religious conversion in 1927, makes a good parlor game. I might say, for instance: “I am a Romantic in aesthetics, republican in politics, and skeptical pluralist in religion.” Today, anyway. Ask me tomorrow. You might get a different answer.
What do these “big words that make us so unhappy” even mean? Past a certain point of intensity and abstraction, if you insist on discussing these matters in terms of “left” and “right,” you are off the track. As I’m sure critics must have observed before me, Eliot’s Christian fusion of time and eternity in Four Quartets bears some resemblance to Benjamin’s Jewish-Marxist messianism in “Theses on the Philosophy of History.” In one of the most moving passages in Four Quartets, written during the blitz, Eliot remarkably mourns together the Cavaliers and the Roundheads, Charles I and Milton, to create a united non-sectarian political and religious community:
If I think, again, of this place, And of people, not wholly commendable, Of no immediate kin or kindness, But of some peculiar genius, All touched by a common genius, United in the strife which divided them; If I think of a king at nightfall, Of three men, and more, on the scaffold And a few who died forgotten In other places, here and abroad, And of one who died blind and quiet Why should we celebrate These dead men more than the dying? It is not to ring the bell backward Nor is it an incantation To summon the spectre of a Rose. We cannot revive old factions We cannot restore old policies Or follow an antique drum. These men, and those who opposed them And those whom they opposed Accept the constitution of silence And are folded in a single party.
The extraordinary phrase here is “the constitution of silence.” This is the political community we will all join in the grave. It may also be a political community on earth pledged not to clamorous factional wars but oriented toward the mystery of the divine. (Our current devotees of René Girard should appreciate this.)
Eliot, like Emerson and Thoreau before him, was inspired by the Bhagavad-Gita, where Krishna counsels Arjuna to do what is politically and socially necessary while maintaining inner discipline, detachment from any desire to attain the fruit of action, and devotion to the divine. It may seem reductive to call this “cultural politics,” but this is only a way of saying that politics is about more than interests and institutions, though these are important, but about how we live out the substance of our everyday lives.
