Jump on track with Furygan
Having the right equipment and accessories for riding on track is of vital importance, with safety, comfort and – of course – looks all priorities. French motorcycle protection specialist Furygan has developed their racing range with learnings taken from racers, including their MotoGP rider Johann Zarco and Isle of Man TT legend Michael Dunlop, to provide all track riders with kit of the highest level that utilises innovative technologies.
Overtake The result of three years of research dedicated to finding the perfect ergonomics for on track riding, the Overtake suit utilises the same elements as developed by Furygan’s MotoGP and WorldSBK riders. Developed in Furygan’s racing department in Nîmes, France, this top-of-the-range suit boasts a new aerodynamic speed hump to optimise drag and comfort in the ‘speed’ position, that will make sure that you feel the true benefit when tucked in on the bike. Comfort is guaranteed with neoprene inserts at the collar and on the wrists, the use of morpho stretch panels and selected perforated areas to maintain excellent air circulation. With high speed there is inherently more risk involved, but safety is taken care of with Kevlar© reinforcements at the hips, seat and forearms, D3O© shoulder and elbow protectors, triple stitching, chest protector pockets and the Overtake is compatible with the Furygan Airbag Vest. The Overtake is available in three colour options (Black/Red/White, Black/White & Black/Blue/White) and in sizes 46/36-58/48, with an RRP of £999.99.
Styg20 x Kevlar© As used and tested by Johann Zarco, these gloves underwent 18 months of development in Furygan’s racing department and six months of testing in race conditions. Built to be the best and used by the very best, the Styg20 x Kevlar© come pre-shaped to ensure they are in the optimum shape for racing and feature the AFS ventilation system to ensure hands don’t get sweaty on warmer days. Alongside the metacarpal protectors and Kevlar© reinforcements, the design of these gloves take every eventuality on track into consideration; palm sliders to reduce the risk of scaphoid fractures, anti-separation links on the final two fingers, finger stitch seams on the outside to enhance comfort, a grip insert to increase feeling of the bars and an elastic cuff adjustment system to provide a tailored fit. With an RRP of £199.99, the Styg20 x Kevlar© gloves come in sizes S-3XL and are available in four colourways: Black/White/Red, Black/FluoYellow/White, Black/White & White/Black.
Knee Slider Often, increases in performance can be down to the tiniest of details, which is why Furygan is as serious about their knee sliders as they are their racing suits and gloves. Developed in Furygan’s racing department for their Moto3 riders, this updated design has resulted in a weight saving of 11%. No compromises have been made though, with great care taken to choose materials that maintain a good feeling with the track but don’t reduce their durability. Available in either Black/White or Black, the RRP for a pair of knee sliders is £42.99.
D3O© Racing Back Protector The new Furygan D3O© Racing Back Protector offers maximum safety without compromising comfort and is assembled using three different materials, to ensure it offers the highest level of durability and protection possible. Made using D3O© molecules that lock upon impact, the back protector is light and comfortable to wear, with adjustable and removeable shoulder and chest straps, but will provide the highest level of protection – exceeding the performance requirements of EN1621-2 (level 2). It also utilises D3O© Airwave Technology to help channel heat emitted by the body to the outside. With three sizes available – 7, 8 or 9 – the D3O© Racing Back Protector has an RRP of £134.99.
Chest Racing D3O© The high performance and ergonomic Chest Racing D3O© is used by Furygan racers worldwide and has been designed with both performance and comfort in mind. Like the back protector, the Chest Racing D3O© helps keep riders cool with D3O© Airwave Technology and is certified as exceeding the performance requirements of EN1621-3 (level 2). Made using D3O© molecules that lock upon impact, it also features a removable central polyurethane shield and has an extended protection zone that covers the chest and ribs. The RRP for the Chest Racing D3O© is £85.99 and is available in one size only. For more Furygan UK News check out our dedicated page Read the full article

So since Fermín is rumoured/has already changed the leathers brand and it's rumored to be due to poor fitting, I decided to look into the racing gear of the tall riders.
First of all we need a list of all the riders (permanent, test, wildcards and replacement to get as much data as I can) that have been on a weekend this year.
With the exception of Pedrosa's and Zurutuza's height all comes from MotoGP website (beef with them because some are wrong, but we roll with it). Dani comes from a random article on the net, and Xabi comes from KTM's website (for some reason they don't have their height listed).
The racing gear list has been done with the aid of this Twit and then looking at the rider's photos in MotoGP site (again beef with them if I put a rider with the wrong gear due to the photo). The ones with the question mark is me not being able to really figure out or being unsure of the branding after searching the riders social media pages. Some do tag it, others don't.
So now we have our riders, so we need to define which are tall, and who isn't. In this case, we will define them when a rider is taller than the mean.
To make things easier, riders are being considered tall when they are 173cm or taller (my first guess was 175cm, so I wasn't that far off). So now this is our new ser of data
And this are new means (just to keep in mind)
Now, let's look at all the data. How many riders in each category are considered tall? And what are the brands they use?
Apparently across all classes, Alpinestars is the most popular one (12 out of the 58 "tall riders") with 20.7%. In 'Others, I include the ones I wasn't sure, the ones with just 1 or 2 riders to make the data easier to look at).
So far, we can see that no MotoGP rider uses Macna, which are the leathers Fermín is/has been using, but they are Dainese riders in Moto2. Something that is interesting is that only REV'IT and Alpinestar supply riders in all categories.
Now the question would be, is Fermín too tall for Macna? Would he fit better with Dainese. To see that, we can see the high distribution across all manufacturers.
According to MotoGP, Fermín is 181cm tall (which I actually disagree, I think he's even over 184 but that's another matter). If we look at Daniese, they supply for both Luca and Joan (and Vale), which might be the reason why I associate tall people with Dainese. However, Bo Bedsneyder, who according to MotoGP is 184cm, does use Macna and doesn't seem to have an issue.
Now, we can look at the means of each category and brand.
It seems like Alpinestar seems to be have the lowest mean, which can mean they do supply the riders in the lower portion of out select group of riders, Interestingly, Macna and Furygan seem to supply the riders in the tall part of it.
And those are the numbers
Macna, REV'IT and Furygan do have the higher means, but they also only supply 6 (soon to be 5), 8 and 6 riders. Alpinestars does in fact have the lowest mean, with Ixon, and if you compare with the mean of each category, they never reach it.
When looked at all the data combined, we can actually see that Magna and Furygan seems to place in the top and top-middle of the list. Alpinestar and REV'IT is all over the place, while Ixon seems to be a choice for the shorter riders of this portion.
(Sorry for the quality and the colour choices)
We can't draw too many conclusions due to the small sample size. But I think it's interesting to look at. I do know there are some test I can perform with the data and see if really Macna and Dainese are chosen by taller riders more than 'short' ones, but I can't actually remember them at the moment. So if anyone wants to look more into it DM me and I'll send the data

Oh, thanks for the answer! Just another question, how do you know Macna has ended the contract?
Also, in motogp the most common used leathers are Dainese and Alpinestars, but Taka and Aleix are the only ones using Ixon. But does Ixon offer that the others might not?
Okay I don't actually know if the contract was ended. I heard it from a guy who heard it from another guy. But allegedly the contract was voided after aldeguer fitted for dainese, but he was already trying to get out of the contract before at least next season and I guessed the stars aligned for him. To me it seems a little weird it's that easy to void a contract but idk I don't have more information than that sorry
And I just named dainese and alpinestars because they are the two big names. Ixon are quietly also strong in MotoGP with four riders (Binder, Espargaro, Oliveira and Nakagami). Ixon have been in the game for a while and they also sponsor teams for merchandising (I think rn they sponsor Aprilia, pramac and tech3). But I don't know the specifics of what they offer, every contract is different but those four seem quite loyal so I think they offer them a lot for being with them so long
And the two "wildcard" riders are Augusto Fernandez with Revit, and Johan Zarco with Furygan. Two very reputable brands but they probably stick with sponsoring one rider each, keeps them up there with the big boys but is cheaper for them with one rider each.
There nothing wrong about being with a different brand, and I definitely am not saying the other brands aren't safe for MotoGP, but it just happens most people go with either alpinestars or dainese. And the end of the day tho it's a combination of what the rider feels comfortable in (i.e, if they have been with one brand for a long time they will trust their product and won't want to change) but also what contracts they are offered, not every rider will get an offer from the top two. And like RST make some of the best leathers in the world but I don't think they sponsor a single rider in all three gp championships.
#i hope that answers your question#if not im sorry for the yapping#if i was to go on a quiz show this would be my specialist subject#asks#motogp
